Are we seriously going to give back all the gains we got in the past couple months for no reason what so ever?
-2

These dumps can be really beneficial for price structure. Sometimes we just need momentum that builds off a bottom. For the last month ish the ratio has just been getting thrown around. Im really looking for a move to continue out of a bottom with the ratio leading

in the catagory of why today, a uniquely fun one for me.
I've been busy (lazy) for the last couple months, so I haven't updated a sheet in which I track my net worth in since the start of august. I happened to update it this morning, including crypto.
Maybe I should just retire the sheet!
2
u/evm_lion 5d ago
So, if Iβm understanding things correctly here, everyone should move all of their ETH to a safe address, and then donβt touch it? Sounds bullish!
9
u/CDulst 5d ago
Immediate panic mode here? really???
Okay, well, I'm back to doing what worked for me thus far.
Buying the dip.
8
u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 5d ago
You can recognize the early signs of a liquidation cascade without having to panic, and take appropriate steps to mitigate the results.
After 10 years in crypto, I feel like I've learned that "buy the dip" when it drops 5% after a 200% run up is stupid.
2
u/CDulst 5d ago
For me, looking back, what worked well is "letting my winners win". I'm still up 40% on my ETH investment and I don't think this run is over long term.
I know I'm not supposed to buy and just hold but man, when sentiment is this bad, this quickly... I just have to buy.
1
u/mini_miner1 5d ago
Buy and hold used to be the number one recommended strategy. Has it really changed?
2
u/majorpickle01 The soil of $5000+ must be watered with the blood of ETH<$4000 5d ago
buy and hold is a long term investment on the project. however you need to assess the investment. As a general mantra, it's terrible advice, because you'll hold useless crap to zero.
Letting winners win is good advice for trading - although by the same token, you need to take your medicine and absorb losses before they snowball.
All advice is usually tied to a specific investment or trading strategy or mode, and unfortunately the vast majority of it is recommended by people that aren't actually really that profitable.
5
u/Itur_ad_Astra Crab High Priest 5d ago
The run might not be over, but still, "buy the dip" on the first real red day in weeks/months is irresponsible advice.
If it's part of a DCA, cool, but then the buy shouldn't be driven by daily price movements.
If it's trading, it's bad advice.
2
u/CDulst 5d ago
You are right. It's terrible advice.
For anyone who needs to read this. pls don't take investing advice from a stranger on a crypto forum on Reddit :)
4
u/mini_miner1 5d ago
Orrr we're down 50 percent from ATH, which wasn't even a really great high, so we're still in a huge dip.

Can't imagine it would affect anyone here today but worth considering moving cold storage to a new address after each spend in the medium term until Eth is quantum secure.
Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for "bunker mode". My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses, i.e. addresses whose pubkeys remain hidden behind a hash.

IMO it is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case in months not years.
If this is the case, we should shut down the chain and call it quits until we're quantum secure or account abstraction is in place so our accounts can have easily rotated keys.
Imagine using an account-based blockchain and having to switch accounts each time you use the chain, which can be multiple times a day. That is entirely impractical.
5
u/edmundedgar reality.eth 5d ago
Imagine using an account-based blockchain and having to switch accounts each time you use the chain, which can be multiple times a day. That is entirely impractical.
The transition would be a bummer but I think it would actually be OK? Switch all addresses to smart accounts (contracts) and stop using EOAs, that was the original expectation of how Ethereum would be used. Once you've done that your wallet should be able to abstract away the rest, namely, each time it makes a transaction via your smart account it does whatever you're asking it to do then rotates the key controlling the smart account.
Setting fire to all existing deployed wallet infrastructure and starting again from scratch might actually be good for UX.
5
u/robmacca 5d ago
I think the more likely scenario is that it becomes feasible to crack a specific public key within days/weeks/months with enough compute. That means that it would only target the largest accounts to start with. Not worth worrying me or any small potatoes here but the institutions and companies with large holdings need to be prepared. You'd could keep most holdings in a new wallet, then everytime you need to use it you use it and send to another new wallet. But I think most people already have multiple wallets and don't use their cold wallets regularly.
2
u/asdafari14 5d ago
It would crash the price for all of us massively when it becomes possible.
2
u/robmacca 5d ago
Undoubtedly. The entire internet would have massive problems with HTTPS/TLS/SSH/Passkeys having issues.
1
u/ianazch 5d ago
What about validator keys?
2
u/robmacca 5d ago
Good point. If ECDSA is cracked then you wouldn't want to withdraw to your public address if it has ever sent a transaction before - if it hadn't then you're fine. If you had already made a transaction then this would help update the withdrawal address: https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-7804 but it's still only a draft. Right now, you could exit your validator, then set up a new one with a fresh withdrawal address but that's probably overkill.
The signing keys use a different cryptography - BLS... From chatting with an LLM (so hoping someone else knows) if that's compromised it seems like they couldn't steal your staked ETH because they don't control the withdrawal address but could get you slashed and steal your rewards.

Well, after OpenAI's maths announcements yesterday, it doesn't seem crazy that a lot of improvements could soon arrive that would make cracking ECDSA possible.
IMO it is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case in months not years. By "break" I mean fast private key recovery (e.g. in one week) on available hardware (e.g. a large GPU cluster).
I don't think it's scaremongering at all.
Don't rush. While I believe there is cause for action a rushed migration would do more harm than good. Don't panic either. Moving assets to protected addresses is a simple, preventative step which does not require new cryptography or new wallets.
Just updating our priors in light of some large breakthroughs yesterday. It seems more for institutions to have plans in place before they need to rush to do it when a breakthrough inevitably occurs which could lead to bigger problems.

Be aware - If you are in the US, moving funds to a new address counts as a taxable event.
EDIT: I was wrong. It just complicates your basis reporting.

Didn't sound like scaremongering. He even used the word calmly. Sounds like reasonable planning ahead for a future eventuality.
1
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 5d ago
discussing the issue and mitigation is reasonable.
bracing for the possibility in worst case months not years is imo dishonest advice.
He has previously warned of other issues making them out to be more urgent than calm analysis would justify. eg quantum threat and budget day.

Nothing like a 5% drop to demonstrate just how many of you don't deserve a bull market. This might be the most negative, quick to insult Ethereum community online. At least on Twitter you still get talks on speculation, TA, fundamentals. Reading the comments here you'd think we had dropped below 1500 and Vitalik had said Ethereum was dead.
-2
1
u/majorpickle01 The soil of $5000+ must be watered with the blood of ETH<$4000 5d ago
The negativity to chart calls in this subreddit is because there's a handful of people that regularly post and then every time there's a move to the downside there's five people claiming to be TA gods.
Twitter (as much as I love it), is a cesspit of crayon eaters at the best of times and you are scrolling through a ton more content so you can just skip it

I think in some cases (or mine at least), it's just sardonicism. I still believe in Ethereum, but the broader market and narrative machine is half retarded even on the best days and I poke at it to cope.
15
u/DiskFearless4448 5d ago
hey buddy, a majority of people complaining have been in this close to or over a decade. enough of this shit where we dont deserve a bull market because you had to read someone is disappointed ETH is below $3000 and fighting to keep .03 in 2026
"you dont deserve a bull market" to people who still come around to r/ethereum is so crazy lmao. If you dont wanna read annoyed comments about an asset that continually fails to break out of BTCs shadow then either post something you'd like to talk about or leave
-2
u/decipheronrescue 5d ago
Dude you're assuming people like this haven't been around or don't contribute. Banana has been around for years and regularly gets comments in the daily doot. You on the other hand I mostly see around here spreading negativity.
1
u/DiskFearless4448 5d ago edited 5d ago
the only thing to discuss on a daily basis is the price, and the price has been doing negative things for a long time now. I'm not some inherently negative person, I'm observant of what ETH has done. I sold a bunch of ETH a year ago or so at $3500 and said I think its going to get worse as there isnt any sort of demand to turn ETH around and guess what happened? Downvoted, told I only whine and complain, remindmebot comments. I wasn't wrong either. We havent sniffed 3500 since that sell and none of those remindmebot people are going to come back at me either.
And I dont bring that up as some I told ya so, Im just saying it really does not matter whether or not youre "contributing" as you put it. Your definition of contribution is largely defined by whether or not youre properly supporting the echo chamber. Doesnt mean I dont believe in Ethereum (I still very much do), but its not contributing nothing to observe and comment on ETHs failures.
1
u/decipheronrescue 5d ago
It's fine if you're only in it for the money, but to say there's nothing to discuss aside from price is such an insult to everyone who builds on this and who is seeing Ethereum reach its potential. Like the audacity to say that immediately after a success Glamsterdam update is impressive.
2
u/DiskFearless4448 5d ago edited 5d ago
Hang on, I never said theres nothing to discuss aside from price. I said theres nothing daily to consistently discuss besides the price. That changes from time to time as upgrades loom closer or whatever, but price is the literal one thing you could talk about every day. Vitalik himself will post separate threads about various things and he's lucky to get 15 comments sometimes (a number of those comments contributing nothing anyway just thanking him for showing up around here.) Its pretty clear this community is price-driven at the end of the day.
I've also been in these threads many different times praising how well upgrades have gone and of course you'll never give me credit for that. Bringing up ETHs price shortcomings is enough to say I only whine.
-4
u/decipheronrescue 5d ago
Yes, nothing daily to discuss other than number goes up/down is your position when, behind the scenes, this is the largest growing chain with the most active development and, yes, on the daily. It's fine to be price focused and obsessed with the price, but as you've pointed out, this reddit community doesn't much care for the talk of tech or fundaments nor does it much care when even Vitalik comes by. If the coin drops 5%, you'll get a wave "this coin is dead, bull run will never happen again, ethereum is pathetic" (all comments taken from today). As someone who builds in this space, it's clear why devs and big Ethereum players aren't hanging out here anymore. Y'all are exhausting.
2
u/DiskFearless4448 5d ago
I guess I just dont understand why youre frustrated that a price driven community cares more about ETH failing in its price than being reminded over and over that Ethereum continues to grow. Nobody shuns devs from coming here or anybody sharing network-related news. They're upvoted all the time.
People who have been here a long time are just tired of discussion revolving around whats coming for ETH. That discussion ten years ago talked about 2026 in such a wildly different way than how its gone. They're justified in that.
0
u/decipheronrescue 5d ago
Sir, this is r/ethereum not r/ethtrader I mean why do you think there was an intentional migration from that sub to this? You think nobody is shunning devs when on days like today the labor of all this hard work is met with, "What a shitcoin?" Devs don't want to come around here and share their work when met with that. My criticism is directed specifically at people like who you see this as a "price-driven" community while failing to separate price and tech. We can lament current price action while also not going to the extreme and shitting on the entire project as so many around here are quick to do.
2
u/DiskFearless4448 5d ago
but devs...do come here and share their work? and theyre upvoted for it. Ive seen it. If there are less coming around to a daily thread because it has more and more comments upset about the price of ETH, is the price of ETH not accountable for that? I dont understand what you want to happen besides people no longer mentioning it.
i see this sub as a price driven community because thats clearly what drives the most discussion and traffic here. You dont have to put it in quotes. You are more than welcome to post about tech and people will respond to you. But you are in the minority if youre a tech-driven guy on this sub.

There wonβt be another like BMNR. ETH needs a true demand. This should be the most pressing issue for anyone interested in ETHs value
If there even IS someone who comes along like BMNR, now we are in the territory of significant portions of ETH being owned essentially by hedge funds. The entire Ethereum thesis falls apart with that

Believe me, I want ETH to do well.
And I genuinely deep down think it achieves prices we're dreaming of.
But the only two levers we can actually analyze and maybe make intelligent speculations on are: massive economic and financial use cases and adoption, AND a monetary premium on the investment side.
Both are still open questions. I'm optimistic on the adoption side, but a lot is going to depend on what AI 'wants' to work with.
The monetary premium side? I think that remains an existential, 50/50 type question no one can answer.

Totally agree, we do currently have monetary premium by definition, since any cash flows are negligible, and likely to remain so.
What people don't seem to get is that a ~$315 billion market cap for ETH is still a pretty serious speculative bet overall.
As for the second part, I can see your point but financial institutions are going to bow to AI soon enough, even in its current form.

My thoughts on ETH/BTC and why Iβm still cautious Two days ago I wrote about my thoughts on the importance of Ray. I think Iβve made it pretty clear by now that Iβm not a big fan of the way Ethereum communicates with the outside world β or of the way Ethereum is being communicatedΒ about. In my opinion, Ethereum still lacks a real lobby that can effectively tell its story and defend its position. Iβm also not a big fan of technical analysis. But if I had to give my own TA-based assessment of ETH/BTC, I think the current setup is actually quite interesting. The big question for me is whether we might already be in the early stages of aΒ massive long-term bottom formation. The 2025 low aroundΒ 0.018Β was obviously brutal. But what I find interesting is that the subsequent low was significantly higher. As long as ETH/BTC doesnβt fall back below roughlyΒ 0.026, I think you can still make a reasonable argument that this is a bottoming process rather than simply another leg down in the long-term downtrend. That said, Iβm still far from bullish. If we loseΒ 0.03, I think there is a very real risk that ETH will suffer another significant dollar-denominated drawdown. ETH/BTC breaking down would probably be a pretty bad signal for ETH in general. On the other hand, I donβt think I would become genuinely optimistic just because ETH/BTC bounces from here. For me, the really important levels are: 0.026Β β losing this would seriously damage the bottoming thesis. 0.03Β β losing this would make me quite concerned about another major ETH sell-off. 0.04Β β this is where things start getting interesting. 0.045+Β β a clean breakout here would make me much more confident that the long-term trend has actually changed. Until we clearly breakΒ 0.04, preferablyΒ 0.045, Iβm still not convinced that the wind has really changed for Ethereum. Maybe we are looking at the beginning of a huge bottom. But we could just as easily be looking at another lower high in a multi-year downtrend. For now, Iβm watching the chart β but Iβm definitely not betting the house on the bullish interpretation. //translated with AI//
