Self Promotion I’m building basically Stremio for books — looking for people who actually read EPUBs to test it

Post image
544 Upvotes

I’ve been building a reading app called TOMEIO because I was getting annoyed with how fragmented reading is.

You find a book somewhere, download the EPUB somewhere else, open it in another app, and then your actual library is completely disconnected from how you found the book in the first place.

So TOMEIO is my attempt at putting that whole flow into one app.

You can search across different book sources, add/download books into your local library, and then just read them from there. The long-term idea is basically Stremio, but for books — where the app itself is the library/reader and sources can be plugged into it.

Everything is still pretty early, so I’m mainly looking for people who already use EPUBs regularly and can tell me what sucks.

Particularly interested in feedback around:

  • book discovery/search
  • library management
  • reading experience
  • metadata/covers
  • what sources/integrations people would actually want

Currently there is a closed beta test for Android, and I am working on getting iOS setup.

https://tomeio.app/

Would genuinely appreciate people breaking it rather than telling me it looks nice lol.

Self Promotion Built a free tool to clean up messy PDFs/EPUBs for Kindle & Kobo — would love some testers

Post image
198 Upvotes

Built a small tool called PureEPUB because I got tired of PDFs and messy EPUBs looking broken on my e-reader — mid-sentence line breaks, OCR junk, mangled quotes, the usual.

It reflows the text properly and spits out device-specific files: clean EPUB for Kindle, proper KePub for Kobo. No accounts, nothing saved — everything's wiped right after conversion. Free, no ads.

Tested it on my own tricky files and it's working well, but I'd love some outside testing. If you've got something that usually breaks converters, would you try it and let me know how it turns out?

Self Promotion I built a Calibre ebook app for myself and want to share it with you all for free

Hi everyone,

After months of searching, i never found a beautiful - Calibre connected, feature packed reader with a nice UI/UX design. They either looked dated, had subscriptions, or didn't really work with calibre. So I made one for myself, and I want to share it with you all for free and no in app purchases. Am i crazy for this? maybe lol.

Here are a few features:

- Calibre Integration with both desktop and web version (can also import EPUBs & PDF's from files)

- Highlights and reading progress sync back to calibre

- Annotate/Draw notes with apple pencil

- Share/export highlights and notes

- Listen to your book with natural voices

- Customize paper color and add any font

- iCloud sync

- No subscription and no data collected

- and much more

-only IOS now - working on an android port.

Let me know if you face any bugs/issues, and curious to hear your thoughts. Thank you!

Self Promotion I got tired of ebook apps treating my library like a folder of files, so I built the reader I wanted

Thumbnail gallery
244 Upvotes

I read a lot on iPhone and iPad, but I always felt that most ebook apps focused almost entirely on opening the book, while the library itself was just a grid of covers.

So I started building Andrea Reader around a different idea: giving you as much control as possible over both your books and your library.

Andrea is a personal digital library and reader for your own EPUBs, PDFs, books, comics and manga, but for ebooks specifically there’s a lot you can customize.

Build your library however you want

You can create collections and then create sections inside those collections.

Books can be dragged into sections, between sections, back out again, reordered manually, or left loose between them. Each collection can also remember its own:

  • Grid and layout
  • Cover size
  • Sorting
  • Appearance
  • Tags
  • Reading settings

So your classics collection can look completely different from your sci-fi library.

EPUB & FB2 reading

The reader is simple by default, but you can go pretty deep if you want:

  • Choose your own fonts
  • Font size and weight
  • Line and word spacing
  • Margins and padding
  • Page/background colors
  • Brightness
  • Page transitions
  • Navigation and gestures
  • Reading Profiles for individual books, sections or whole collections

I’ve also been improving EPUB compatibility quite a lot, including Calibre-generated EPUBs.

Automatic reading activity

Andrea automatically keeps track of your reading while you read.

You can see:

  • Reading sessions
  • Time read
  • Pages
  • Progress
  • Reading streaks
  • Estimated time remaining
  • Stats for a single book
  • Stats for sections and entire collections
  • Activity across your whole library

You don’t need to start a timer or log anything manually.

Your books can live almost anywhere

You can import locally or connect Andrea to:

iCloud, OPDS, WebDAV, SMB, SFTP, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box and MEGA.

You can also download books, organize them into your library and later remove the local file to free space while keeping the cover and metadata.

There’s also a small built-in section for downloading free public-domain books and starting to read them in seconds.

Privacy

No account required.
No ads.
No third-party tracking.

I don’t know what books you import or what you read. Reading activity and statistics stay local to your device.

Andrea Reader is free to download and use, with optional Premium for some of the more advanced customization and power-user features.

If you read a lot of ebooks on iPhone or iPad, I’d be interested to hear what you think or what you still feel is missing from ebook readers.

Self Promotion I wanted an EPUB reader that could actually read my books aloud, so I built one

Thumbnail gallery
18 Upvotes

I spend a lot of time with EPUBs, but I don't always want to stare at my phone while reading. I wanted something where I could open my own EPUB, read normally when I wanted, and switch to listening when I didn't.

So I’ve been building AudiFlo, an Android ebook reader with built-in text-to-speech.

The latest update is focused heavily on the EPUB experience:

New EPUB Reader + Player
A new reading and playback experience specifically for EPUB books.

Long Reading Mode
Made for longer reading sessions instead of constantly tapping through pages.

Auto-scrolling
EPUBs can now automatically scroll while you're reading.

Multi-voice narration
For books with dialogue, AudiFlo can switch voices between characters during playback instead of using one voice for everyone.

Better Halo performance
I’ve also optimized Halo for better speed and lower battery usage, so longer listening sessions should be smoother.

The idea isn't really to replace normal ebook reading.

It's to make the same EPUB usable in both reading mode and audiobook-style listening mode.

So you can read at home, put the phone down and listen while walking, commuting, doing chores, etc., and then continue reading later.

It's free to try on Android:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.audiflo.zrota.app

I'm especially curious about this from people here who read a lot of EPUBs:

What is the biggest thing existing EPUB/TTS readers still get wrong?

I'd genuinely like to use the answers to decide what I build next.

Self Promotion I built an Android eBook reader for language learners, giving free lifetime access to the first few readers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built an Android eBook reader called Lingaro: Read & Learn, and to thank early readers I'm giving free lifetime access to the first 10 people who contact me.

It reads your own books (EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT), but it's made for language learners. Tap any word for an instant translation, its base (dictionary) form, and pronunciation, all without leaving the page. Saved words can be practiced with learning games, and it tracks your progress.

There's also a growing Stories section written for learners, in 5 languages and 3 difficulty levels.

It just launched, so any feedback or bug reports are very welcome.

An iOS version is also on the way, so I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me know if you'd be interested in that too 🙏

Self Promotion I built a free tool that converts web content into EPUB format. Offline, NO SIGNUP, NO LIMIT

Thumbnail gallery
96 Upvotes

I spend a lot of time every day reading online—blogs, long-form articles, and newsletters. My usual workflow is to curate interesting pieces throughout the day, then set aside a dedicated block of time to read them all at once.

At first, I relied on simple bookmarking, but my bookmarks quickly became an unmanageable mess.

Then I relied on [Omnivore](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41985118) to handle this. I have to say it was a great tool, but one day they suddenly announced they were shutting down the service, leaving us with very little time to migrate. That was the first time I truly felt like I was being kicked out. I spent so much time collecting content I loved, but in the end, it was stored in someone else’s repository—it felt as though those things never really belonged to me.

After that, I tried several alternatives like [EpubPress](https://epub.press), [dotepub](https://dotepub.com), etc. They were okay, but they all had limitations—like conversion limits, service interruptions, or being too complicated to use (they had way too many input fields; some parameters I didn’t even understand hahah... I just wanted to click a button and get it done). More importantly, my data was dependent on someone else’s servers.

So, I built my own tool: [Any2Ebook](https://any2ebook.com).

It consists of two main parts: a [browser extension](https://any2ebook.com/how-it-works) that captures open tabs or bookmarks, and a [desktop app](https://any2ebook.com/how-it-works) that converts them into clean, readable EPUBs. The two communicate via a local HTTP port. The entire conversion process happens right on your machine—no data ever leaves your computer.

**You use it, you own it.**

Since everything is processed locally, there are no artificial limits on how many files you can convert.

# What about PDFs?

I also work with a lot of academic papers, so I added a [PDF to EPUB](https://any2ebook.com/how-it-works) feature. It uses AI to handle complex math typesetting and OCR. It really put me through the mill. I would certainly prefer to handle PDF OCR locally as well, but current local models are not yet mature enough. Running a powerful OCR model requires a high-performance PC, making it difficult for me to strike a balance between recognition accuracy and hardware requirements. Therefore, it is currently implemented using well-known, high-quality LLMs such as Mistral and DeepSeek, so it is a paid feature.

If local OCR models become efficient enough to run on standard laptops in the future, I’ll be the first to switch it over to a fully local implementation.

But if you don't need the PDF feature, the web content conversion is—and will remain—completely free and private.

These days, I usually batch-convert my favorite articles to EPUB and send them to my Kindle. E-readers are a godsend for focused reading!

I sincerely hope this tool helps others who value their reading privacy and ownership as much as I do. I’m happy to answer any questions or hear your feedback!

Hope this helps!

Self Promotion A free, ad-free reading tracker and book community: one-tap import from Goodreads/StoryGraph, and you can export everything back out

Post image
8 Upvotes

Disclosure up front: I build Seekquel, so I'm biased. It's a reading tracker and book community on web, iOS, and Android, and I think it's worth a look for this crowd.

Tracking:

  • Import your whole library in one go from Goodreads or StoryGraph (ratings, shelves, dates, reviews), and export all of it back out to CSV whenever you want. No lock-in.
  • Track status, current page, and reading sessions, including rereads that stay in your timeline.
  • Rate on five axes instead of one star: writing, characters, plot, atmosphere, and impact, with half-stars. Non-fiction gets its own axes, and romance gets a separate spice rating.
  • A stats dashboard with a chart builder.
  • Discovery by mood and trope, not just genre.

Social, if you want it:

  • Buddy reads and book clubs with shared progress, so a group can read the same book without spoiling ahead of each other.
  • A feed to follow other readers, see what they're rating, and swap recommendations.
  • Reviews you can browse and discuss, plus content warnings from readers.

One thing I'll be straight about: it's a tracker, not a store or a reader, so it doesn't host or sell ebooks. Recommendations read your own ratings and the moods you gravitate toward, and they sharpen as you rate more.

The core app is free with no ads and no promoted books. No publisher can pay to climb your recommendations. Pro is optional and comes monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase, for the deeper stats and power-user extras.

Happy to answer anything about it. My name is Sabri btw!

Self Promotion My contribution to public domain... Built an FREE, AD-FREE librivox audiobooks player/reader cause i was SICK of the spammy ads on the existing players.

This app is my attempt at contributing to public domain works, I am not a good author unfortunately but i am a good engineer. So here it is. The goal is to make Literature accessible without the hassle of ads and privately..

The app is COMPLETELY FREE to use for LibriVox recordings and unlimited reading.
The app has all 22000+ Librivox Audio Books
All of the 75000+ project gutenberg ebooks and also the 1400+ standard ebooks collection.
The ebooks and Librivox recordings and linked so that you can listen and read in the same interface.
Optional AI narration (for books that do not have librivox recordings)

I genuinely believe its a great app. NOT SLOP. Its unfortunate that most community mods in this space are paid by giants like Audible and Eleven Labs and keep deleting my posts for "self promotion"... Its sad. the app is called mimesa and its on the play store. iOS on the way. the site is mimesa . org

I would love any and all feedback regarding the same including criticism, Thanks. A fellow reader.

Self Promotion My book is currently FREE on Amazon for the next few days.

Hi! Sorry for the spam, but this is a completely different book of mine—it might appeal to a different audience—and it’s currently available for download absolutely free. It’s Dark Fantasy written in light, easy-to-read language.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HK587TB3

One day, she disappeared.

She left behind a castle, a mystery, a forbidden love, and a kingdom already on the brink of war.

A conspiracy among the nobility turns a personal tragedy into a bloody struggle for power. A young lord loses everything. With only a handful of loyal warriors at his side, he sets out on a path of ruthless vengeance.

But the real story takes a turn when a simple shepherd finds a book in an ancient forest that preserves the memories of these events.

What really happened to the girl, and what price will those who dare to read her story have to pay?

Kristina Lis. The one who refused to die.

Self Promotion I made an ebook reader for downloading & reading public domain books.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

English literature student here. So I made an app to download/read/track public domain books in one place. It's called OpenLeaf. Local EPUB imports also work.

It has a searchable catalog of 80,000+ public domain books sourced from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks.

As a lit student, every semester finding PDFs of 10+ novels and plays for class was annoying. PDFs are awful on mobile too.

So I just made one app to automate the process, took me 8 months tho. It's free, no ads, no accounts, Android only for now.

If you're interested here's the PlayStore link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cc.openleaf.app

Self Promotion I built an e-book reader where you can read novel in any language!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As someone who has read a ton of eastern novels, I’ve always been frustrated by how many great stories never get translated. So I built Ainotra Reader, essentially my dream app for reading digital novels, where you can translate novels that you already own digitally.

What makes it different?

Most ebook readers with translation features simply do:
Text → Translate.
This creates inconsistent translations where each chapter feels disconnected, and crucial context gets lost, even with the latest most expensive AI.

Ainotra Reader uses a smarter translation pipeline:

Context Gathering (previous chapter summaries, chapter transitions, glossary terms) → Translate → Update glossary → Summarize chapter

This approach ensures consistent translations across chapters and eliminates the common inconsistencies you normally see with bare-bones AI translations.

Have you noticed how many novel fan translations are inconsistent with terminology? Skill names, objects, and locations often change over time. Yes! that happens because AI is used poorly, and the translators probably don’t even read the chapters before pushing advance releases to their readers.

Core Features

  • Organize books with Libraries, auto-sorted Series, and manual Collections
  • Import from EPUB, PDF, DOCX, or TXT files
  • High quality AI translation with glossary and context awareness, with no content filtering (NSFW scenes and unusual topics translate properly) (Premium)
  • Chat with your book when you need to recall plot details (Premium)
  • Extensive reader customization
  • Google Drive sync across all platforms

Ainotra Reader works completely free as an ebook reader. Only AI-related features are locked.

You can translate 2 chapters per day for free.

Try it now at ainotra.com/reader
Available on Windows, Android, macOS, iOS (TestFlight), Linux, and Web.

If you want public iOS TestFlight access, leave a comment and I’ll give you access.

Self Promotion justread.app 4.0 for iOS: EPUB, PDF, comics and audiobooks in one library, with offline text to speech

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi, I'm the developer of justread.app . Version 4.0 went out this week and I added:

  • Comics and manga. CBZ and CBR, two page spreads, double tap zoom, a thumbnail page grid, reading direction per book so manga that declares itself right to left opens that way on its own.
  • Read Aloud. example Any EPUB without its own narration can be read to you, by any Apple voice on the device or by natural English voices you download once and then run offline. The sentence highlights, the spoken word underlines, the page turns itself, and there's speed, sentence skips, a sleep timer and Lock Screen controls.
  • Background listening. Prepare a book first and it keeps going with the screen off.
  • Line Focus. Dims the page and keeps a guide on the line you're reading, tap above or below to step. It was built as a focus and dyslexia aid.
  • Audiobooks from Files, drag and drop or Open In, not only from a watched folder. FLAC now works the same as M4B and MP3, single file or a folder of chapters.
  • Yearly books goal, so you can set how many books you want to finish this year and watch the pace from Home.
  • Wide tables in EPUBs scroll inside the page now, or open full screen with pinch to zoom, instead of getting cut off at the margin.
  • Print a book's highlights, and share a PDF highlight as a quote card.

The rest of it for context: it reads books you already own out of a folder you pick, imports from Calibre or any OPDS catalog, exports highlights to Readwise or as PDF and Markdown, sends books to Kindle or PocketBook, and syncs position, highlights and bookmarks through your own iCloud. 17 languages, iPhone and iPad.

Limitations worth knowing before you try it: no DRM support of any kind, so DRM-free files only. Read Aloud is EPUB only, no PDF. The offline neural voices are English only, everything else falls back to Apple's system voices. Comics have no table of contents, no highlights and no in-book search, because a fixed-layout page has no selectable text.

Self Promotion I couldn't find a headset e-reader that treated EPUBs like real books, so I made one. Text is finally sharp enough to read for hours. (Dev)

Post image
42 Upvotes

Solo dev here. I read a lot and I own a Quest, and every reading app I tried was either a floating PDF viewer or half-broken. So I built the one I wanted and shipped it this month. It's called HoverTome.

The pitch for this sub specifically:

  • EPUB is the first-class format — real reflow, 11 typefaces, six paper colors including a proper dark page, your own size/spacing/margins
  • MOBI and PDF too; MOBI and CBR auto-convert on import
  • Sideload from the headset's Downloads folder or over a cable — no account, no cloud, no subscription, fully offline
  • Built-in offline dictionary: point at a word, pull the trigger
  • Read lying flat on your back with the page hovering above you, or with the lights off in a cabin while it snows outside (17 environments, or passthrough if you want your actual room)
  • 96 public-domain classics pre-loaded

Honest limits: it's Quest only for now and comfort is the real question with a headset -- it varies person to person. I read in ~1-hour sessions and it's good, especially on a train or plane. It will never replace my e-ink paperwhite, but it's nice when I need a hands-free way to just get away...

$9.99 once. Store link in comments. Happy to answer anything, especially about formats and what you'd want from a reader like this.

Self Promotion I built a reader that speaks EPUBs and PDFs aloud and highlights each word on the page itself — three months free for the first 1,000 users.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I built this for myself first. I read a lot of long PDFs, O'Reilly books and Medium articles on their sites, and listening to a book is always a better experience for me than plain reading.

It reads EPUBs, PDFs and web pages out loud and highlights the word it's saying, on the page itself, in the book's own layout. So you can follow along, look away, and pick up again without hunting for where you were.

Some specifics:

  • It opens the file directly. No conversion, no upload. Press play and it starts in a few seconds.
  • Running headers, footers and page numbers are left out.
  • Jump to any chapter or page and it reads from there. Double-tap a sentence to start from that place (Option-click on Mac).
  • Web pages are read on the site itself, highlighting as it goes, and it follows links, so a book you're reading online keeps playing chapter to chapter.
  • The voice processing runs on the device using AI models. Nothing you read leaves your phone or Mac, and it works with no connection.
  • iPhone, iPad and Mac, synced over iCloud.

It's $2.99/month. The first 1,000 people to use this link get three months free:

https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6805287629&code=CHIME3MONR

It renews at $2.99/month after the three months unless you cancel. Nothing is charged during them.

App Store page: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6805287629

It's a young app and there's plenty missing. DRM'd Kindle and Kobo books won't open, it reads your own EPUB and PDF files.

Feedback, suggestions and feature requests welcome.

Self Promotion Sutra 2.0 - free iOS OPDS/Kavita/Calibre reader, now with panel-aware comics, side-loading and auto-scroll

Post image
18 Upvotes

I built Sutra, a free iOS ebook reader that connects to OPDS feeds, Kavita, Calibre-Web, Calibre-Web Automated, Komga, and Project Gutenberg — or just reads local files with no server at all.

2.0 added panel-aware comic reading (isolates individual panels instead of shrinking full pages to fit small screens, validated at 90% accuracy against a dedicated test suite) and epub auto-scroll — both free. A one-time $6.99 Sutra Pro unlock adds .cbz/.mobi support and Komga sync.

Hey everyone! We have been working on Augre for a while now, and I thought that this space is perfect to get feedback on the app. Augre is a desktop EPUB reading app that is easy to use and navigate. We wanted something that could work offline, something that we could use to import our EPUBs and read them. The read-aloud feature is our highlight as of now, you can use it without internet access. We also hate when we have to sign up for things just to start using the app, so here no sign up is required. Simply download the app, import your files and start reading. Let me know what you guys think! getaugre.com
