Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.

Hi all. I run Social Intelligence Co., a small independent publishing project. It started as psychology ebooks and grew into something bigger. Everything lives in one place.

FREE EBOOKS (no catch, just an email for the download link):

The Ordinary Strange: déjà vu, dreams, yawning, earworms, crying, blushing
The Art of Disappointing People: boundaries and people pleasing
Nobody Is Thinking About You: the spotlight effect
Why You Feel Behind in Life
Not Financial Advice: money basics
Grab them from my free shelf at https://socialintelligenceco.vercel.app/free-ebooks.

FICTION:

The Stone Plague: a six book fantasy mystery where people turn to stone, alive and dreaming inside. Book 1 (The Warm Stone) is free, the rest are paid.
The Meridian Files: a psychological thriller trilogy (The Errata Protocol, Rule Fourteen, The First Chair).
Both live at https://socialintelligenceco.vercel.app/books.

GAMES (all free, right in your browser):

Case Files: interactive detective investigations. Question suspects, and only one chain of choices cracks the case.
BLUFF: a 60 second rapid fire truth or bluff sprint.
BOOK IQ: a quiz over the 100 most read books, 1000 questions.
Play at https://socialintelligenceco.vercel.app/mind-games.

Here is my ask: start with one free ebook or one Case File tonight. If it earns its place on your shelf, tell one person about it. That is how a one person project survives.

Free on Amazon for the next 3 days for the Jurassic Park fans: "PATHOGEN"

Thumbnail amazon.ca
• Upvotes

Hey everybody I'd just like to share the news that this novel will be free from today, October 14th, until the 17th.

For anyone who loved Crichtons "Jurassic Park" or "Lost world" that lean heavily into the "science" part of science fiction.

Synapsis:

Years ago, the controversial company GenTex shocked the scientific community by claiming they had successfully resurrected dinosaurs—only to suddenly go dark, disappearing from the public eye for years.

Operating completely off the grid on a remote tropical island, they have somehow been amassing billions in funding. Spatial Ecologist Dr. Eric Leone is sent with a team to conduct a government-sanctioned closed-door audit of the mysterious company.

Instead, he starts to uncover concerning flaws in the company's squeaky-clean presentation, and will soon discover a horrifying truth being swept under the rug.

Meanwhile, birds across the continent have been dropping dead in unprecedented numbers. Scientists scramble to fight the mysterious, unknown avian pathogen that threatens to wipe out global livestock and wildlife.

Dr. Eric Leone partners up with Biomathematician, Dr. Dallas Kang, and investigative journalist, Nisha Hayadi, in a race against time to stop a reckless tech CEO from causing irreparable damage. To do that, they'll have to survive coming face to face with cunning, prehistoric predators.

This is a fast-paced, high-stakes story that explores scientific wonder, advancements in biogenetics, touching acts of human empathy that will tug at your heartstrings, death nd—of course—some good old-fashioned dino action.

Anyways thanks yall ! :)

Crafting a weekly magazine with top world news?

I'm wondering if anybody has ever done something similar before. I like to keep myself informed about what's going on in the world, and I figured that if I can source news articles from around the web (maybe via RSS) and package them weekly into an ePub, I could create my own weekly magazine for my e-reader.

Does it sound stupid? I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so do you guys know if there's something similar already existing?

I know a bit of Calibre, if that helps.

The first author just submitted two ebooks to the directory I shared here

Small update since I posted about ebook.zone: we’ve received our first two author-submitted ebooks, both by D. Pahnke!

Us: An Intimacy Innovation is a slow-burn college romance about a shy, thoughtful student and a popular girl exploring what makes a relationship work. The listing notes explicit adult scenes.

Us: And Them continues their story as outside pressure begins to test their relationship.

I haven’t read them myself, so these descriptions come from the author’s listings. But seeing someone submit their own work to something I built is a pretty special feeling.

Thanks to everyone who checked out the site and shared feedback. If contemporary romance is your thing, take a look!

I built a place to discover ebooks and give authors a free way to share theirs

Hey r/ebooks, I’ve been working on an ebook directory and would love to hear what you think.

For readers, it brings together free and paid ebooks you can browse by category. Each book has its own page with a cover, description and links to the stores where it’s available.

For authors, you can list your ebook for free, add your website or store links, and update everything through your account. Basic listings don’t expire. There are optional paid promotions, but you don’t need them to get listed.

I added the initial collection from public sources, with those entries labelled on their detail pages. Now I’d love to welcome authors who want to share their own books.

What would make an ebook directory genuinely useful to you? Better filters, more independent authors, easier ways to find free reads, or something else?

I made a free website to swipe through the opening paragraphs of classic, public-domain novels until one hooks you. Then, get the ebook from project Gutenberg.

Question Looking for early testers for my reading app, Shelf!

Post image
36 Upvotes

A few weeks ago, I made a post asking for feedback and suggestions as I started building a reading app for iOS.

The response was incredible. I received so many thoughtful suggestions, ideas, and honest opinions from fellow readers. It was genuinely motivating, and a lot of that feedback helped shape what I'm building.

Fast forward a few weeks, and I've completed Phase 1 of development!

The app is called Shelf. It's a simple, DRM-free ebook, comic, and manga reader designed for people who enjoy reading on their phones, like me.

I'm now looking for a handful of early testers who would be willing to explore the app and, ideally, use it for their everyday reading over a two-week trial.

A little context on where Shelf is right now:

This is by no means a finished product. My focus so far has been on getting the fundamentals right: importing books, rendering different formats, navigating pages, and making the overall reading experience as smooth and reliable as possible.

The goal of this initial testing phase is simple: Can Shelf's core reading experience hold its own against some of the best reading apps already out there?

I want to understand what works, what doesn't, what's missing, and whether you'd actually consider using Shelf instead of your current reader.

Once I'm confident we've got the fundamentals right, I'll move on to the fun part: giving Shelf its own personality through thoughtful design, little interactions, and a few ideas I've been wanting to explore.

A few things to know:

  • Shelf is currently available for iOS only. Android is planned for later.
  • You'll need an iPhone and Apple's free TestFlight app to participate. I'll provide the invitation link.
  • I'm looking for people who can use Shelf for their regular reading and share honest feedback throughout the trial.
  • Since it's an early version, you might encounter bugs or unfinished features.

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a message!

And to everyone who contributed to my original post, thank you. It's been really rewarding to turn some of those suggestions into an actual app.

Question Looking for testers for my reading companion app

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

When I read, I often get stuck on something and want to ask about it. With an ebook the text is already sitting right there, so I thought there must be a way to do that. It became my side project, and I've spent the last few months on it.

IIt answers from the text itself and shows the quote each answer is based on. It runs on your phone and syncs reading position and library from the e-reader.

The books come from your tolino e-reader, from an EPUB you upload, or from the free pre-loaded public domain books.

It only works with DRM-free books. Watermarked ones are fine, which is how most German shops sell them.

I'd love testers who read a lot: where in your reading would something like this actually help?

Is there a reader that allows to sync highlighted stuff or notes in PDFs / ebooks over multiple platforms? So you can start reading e.g. under Linux and then continue under a ebook reader? And notes and highlights are also shared between them?

Self Promotion BiblioFuse 2.1.15 public TestFlight — help me test sync across Kavita, Mac and NAS hosts (free, sandbox purchases)

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I'm the developer. BiblioFuse is a native iOS/iPadOS reader (CBZ, CBR, EPUB, PDF, TXT) that also talks to servers. I'd like real-world testing before the next release, mostly of progress, bookmark and annotation sync.

Join: https://testflight.apple.com/join/F2wv6CzG

  • iOS 2.1.15 (123) is live in TestFlight now.
  • [MAC] Mac build 124 is in review and should clear today; it will appear in the same TestFlight link.
  • Purchases are Sandbox, so Pro is free to try and nothing is charged.

What to test

  1. BiblioFuse host as the server. Use the Mac app (from the TestFlight link) or the Docker/Synology host: https://github.com/MLT-solutions/bibliofuse-nas-distribution/releases Formats: CBZ, CBR, EPUB, PDF, TXT.
    • Read on one device, close, open on another. Does it land on the same page or passage?
    • Add a bookmark on one device. Does it show on the other?
    • Highlight and add a note on one device. Does it appear on the other?
  2. Kavita. Add it under Catalog Servers (OPDS or the Kavita API). Formats: CBZ, CBR, EPUB, PDF.
    • Progress and bookmarks for all four formats.
    • Highlights and notes for EPUB (Kavita's annotation API is EPUB-only, so PDF and comics won't sync those).
    • Check your Kavita web reader shows the same place, and the reverse.
  3. Anything else. Library, reader, Tools tab, Live Translation. Crashes and odd UI are as useful as sync bugs.

When you report a bug, please include: device and iOS version, server type and version (Kavita, Komga, Mac host, NAS host), format, and what you expected versus what happened. TestFlight's built-in screenshot feedback works well.

Known limits: sync is only as capable as the server, so a given feature can be absent on a given server by design. If something feels like a bug rather than a limit, post it anyway.

Thanks. Happy to answer questions here.

Free for the next 5 days on Kindle - The Wasted Half Hour: Why Your One-to-Ones Aren't Working

Look at your calendar. Somewhere in there are the one-to-ones — thirty minutes each, recurring, sitting quietly among the things that feel more urgent.

You have probably cancelled one this month. They are probably status updates. You probably come out knowing nothing you did not know going in.

That is not because you are a bad manager. It is because you were given a recurring calendar slot and no instructions about what to put in it.

This book fixes the structure around the half hour. You will learn what a one-to-one is actually for.

Five practical tools, a worked example from a real workplace in every chapter, and a checklist you can use tomorrow.

Stop wasting your most useful half hour. Buy now

Question Cloud Hosted Ebook Library

Hey folks!

Im working on a cloud hosted ebook management platform called HomeBranch that allows you to store, organize, and read your ebooks. It also has an OPDS server so you can access your books on your ereader.

What features would you like to see in a cloud hosted ebook library?
