I was recommended to watch this anime after finishing Attack on Titan. I just started getting into anime so this would be my second anime I've watched. I gotta say, that ending was a little anti-climatic but I'm not entirely disappointed by it! As a matter of fact, I'm satisfied with the ending. I feel like I watched the show as if I was in Ryuk's shoes, merely a spectator. I never really found myself rooting for anyone in particular. Not sure if the writers intended it to be that way. Sure there was times where I was hoping L would catch Light, but then I would also start hoping Light would outsmart L. But i never really "locked in" a side i was with 100%. I really enjoyed the whole "cat and mouse" thing Light and L had. I was really disappointed when L died though, the show did feel a little rushed afterwards. In a way this show reminded a lot of Dexter, a show i really enjoyed. Which could explain why I loved Deathnote
Overall, deathnote is definitely up there with my favorite shows. If there's an anime as good as this feel free to recommend some. I really want to get into Anime and expand my tastes đ

You may have seen my previous portrait of Light. Lately, my art has felt dirty, like I've forgotten how to render...

Feels like the early 2000âs again when people at my middle school had a death note. What do you think? Should someone get removed from the school and possibly arrested for writing names in a âDeath Noteâ? Or is this just another silly reason to get in trouble for? It is amusing that teachers and police are aware of the anime though.

Light had a supernatural notebook that allowed him to kill someone just by knowing the face and name. L had to use deduction and strategy to narrow down the culprit.
IF Light didn't get the death note to begin with, how do you think the story could have been made interesting enough to continue?

As part of a drawing challenge, I'm drawing a ship every day this month, and yesterday it was LawLight's turn! Death Note was the first proper anime I watched when I was 11 and it opened the world of anime and manga to me and for that I'll forever be grateful. Here's to 16 years of being a Death Note fan!

I got hooked on this show from episode 2. Great premise, and I think the perfect length. Unlike some shows that become super repetitive or make so many twists it seems like the writers are just trying to keep it alive rather than writing a thoughtful story with a beginning, middle, and end. Great character piece with light, I found it shocking how quickly his sense of justice turned into a God complex to where he would have willingly sacrificed family members. Lights arrogance made him notably successful with using the notebook, but also made him vulnerable to said God complex. I could go on about the good and overall i give it maybe an 8.5/10.
I am not actually the type of person who gets upset over logical flaws. A good example is i loved the movie interstellar while some people cant stand some of the scientific flaws with the movie. I know this type of stuff bothers the hell out of some people and it does slightly bother me, but doesnt ruin movies/tv shows unless its to a certain degree which i dont think Death Note reaches. However, I do think the argument is stronger for it doesnt make sense how Light overlooked so many things and had no fail safe plan. Like yeah i get the counterargument was he underestimated Neer and Mello and had the God complex going on, but still. Maybe overlooking one thing, but having no fail safe plan or not having whats his face confirm the notebook would work before coming.. I mean come on. Someone with Lights personality and intelligence would never overlook something so obvious no matter how arrogant he became. Have you ever met someone with a bad case of OCD? That doesnt just turn off.
The reason why this show hooked me was because the simple premise of show. Who is right? What would you do? It is a very fair question im sure everyone who watches the show has to discern for themselves and its not an extremely straight forward thing to answer. Like is it wrong to steal a loaf of bred for your starving family? Good philosophical debate wrapped up in this story. Anyways, i do think Light had to lose in the end. The writers do too since thats what happened right? Given that, its safe to say the writers also wanted you to come to this conclusion. The point of the show to me was the ends do not justify the means, conducting evil to solve evil is just a replacement not a solution. Think to the future when Light finally dies if he won. The world hasnt had to dispense justice and order for themselves in so long and everyone at this point either oppose Kyra with a fiery passion or worship Kyra with a fiery passion. Now that person is gone imagine the chaos and violence. Not to mention what if Light gets a mental disease maybe he turns 27 and develops schitzophrenia. Additionally, nobody is a perfect judge of character, and everyone makes mistakes (although some are unforgiveable) and some can reform. So besides the innocents who stood in Lights way, how many more innocents would he misjudge? Once again this is a grandiose demonstration of the end dont justify the means and that even though Light is extremely capable he is in fact not a God and far from being capable of perfection. In the bread scenario, the fallout isnt as aggressive so i actually agree with stealing the bread as long as you understand that you will be punished if you get caught and comply. Not having your family starve outweighs stealing one piece of bread. But not everyone can steal or the world doesnt work. Get my point? This would be on the other end of the spectrum being minimal consequences minimal impact. There is nuance. Finding this nuance is part of the human condition.
Now if you made it this far i commend you as here is my main problem with the ending. I think they should have leaned into the answer they chose. Some sort of divine judgement, punishment, or maybe anyone who uses the notebook actually turns into a shinigami (my personal favorite alternate) which also satisfies those who use the book only know the pain and suffering unique to others who have also used the book. Maybe an explanation of why this is the conclusion you should come to. Maybe explain the purpose for the book and the shinigamis to exist in the first place (perhaps a reminder to humanity of this lesson) something to conclude the philosophical debate this show poses. I think they wrapped up the actual story below average but not horrible, Lights character arc nicely, and didnt address this overarching philosophical debate they posed at all. Just left me with nothing and that is what caught my interest. I immediately thought wow what a creative way to pose this just to get nada. Like i said overall still very good but man there was more there! Use those new deduction skills they chose the ending they chose because we were supposed to arrive at a specific philosophical conclusion. Perhaps now that i have wrote this out the ending could be genious because now i have had to think like L and Light to put a fine point on the philosophical message myself rather than them outright walking me through it to some degree. Hmm (said in Ls voice)

Hello, Iâm in search of a specific piece of fanart of Mello Iâve tried looking through Pinterest, Tumbler, and this subreddit as well. Iâd appreciate any effort to help.
The best I could describe the image would be a digital drawing of Mello in a âChibi sketchâ style
The Line art resembled pencil brush I believe Mello was drawn with blue eyes, specifically with his sleeveless leather top and burn scar White background, and a shocked expression face? Im sorry if this description is too vague, but would appreciate any help Thanks :)

Yes, I've read the manga, still he barely does anything mentionworthy for the plot except tell Sidoh to shut up so he'll get his book back sooner, apart from overall reduced appearances. Though considering.. at that point Light manipulated a Shinigami into killing itself, so.. I guess he also kept some healthy distance.
He was only in it for the show anyway.

>!After watching Relight 2 for the eighth time, here is my verdict: it is one of my favorite film. It has a short runtime yet is packed with heartbreaking and tragic moments. The visuals are stunningâespecially the rooftop sequence and the film's final sceneâand the music is perfectly matched to the scenes, making them truly special. The film does complete justice to the characters and the manga; it features excellent characters, and I feel the changes 'Relight' made to them are fantastic.
My opinion on some of the characters from the movie -
Removing Soichiro from the series felt like the right decision; he had endured so much suffering, and as a character, it was a right decision by the story for him to pass away before the events of the film. This also adds an element of mystery to the storyâdid he truly die peacefully, or was 'Light' the cause of his death? It raises questions in the audience's minds about whether 'Light' had gone that far or if there was another reason behind Soichiro's death.
We know that if faced with a crisis where he had to kill his family, 'Light' would certainly do so. This event can be interpreted in various ways. Soichiro's absence in 'Relight 2' makes one feel that all the struggles he endured in Part 1 were in vain; he never even discovered the true identity of 'Kira' before the end.
Now For Mello, limiting his screen time to just two scenes was a brilliant decision. It adds layers of mystery to his character and offers different perspectives on who he is. In one scene, he meets Near to get a photograph and leaves unscathedâa moment that makes him look incredibly cool. The second scene comes when he decides to sacrifice his life to catch Kira and save Near; he does this not merely to repay the debt, but to prove that he is the right choice and worthy of becoming 'L'.
This was the perfect approach for a complex and polarizing character like Mello. 'Relight' handled his character exceptionally well, effectively showcasing just how unpredictable and batshit he is.
Mikami and Takada being present from the beginning of the story makes them more prominent and shows them as important and prominent side charactersâunlike the manga/anime, where they appear very late in the story.
Misa, too, felt better served in this film compared to the manga or anime; as we know, while she appears at the start of Part 2, she soon fades into the backgroundâsomething that feels like an insult to her character. In this film, however, that aspect is handled better; she is portrayed in the background from the very beginning to highlight how insignificant she is to Light as a person, and the look in her eyes reveals a trapped soul. The scene featuring the caged parrot perfectly mirrors Misaâs character: the bird is in a magnificent cage, longing to fly but unable to do so. Similarly, Misa lives in a fine room yet remains trapped; she yearns for freedom but never breaks awayâfor who else could she possibly trust? Everything has been stripped from her, leaving Light as the only one she can rely on.
Now, let's finally talk about 'Light'. I think portraying him as a bad person right from the start was the right decision. He doesn't have much of a personality; his main goal is simply to relieve his boredom, and that is why he kills people. Depicting him as evil throughout the story makes him more entertaining to watch, and the conclusion of his character feels even more amazing to watch.
One scene that was excellent and deserves a shoutout imo was the decision to have the SPK killed by Kira rather than the Mafia; that was incredibly impactfulâespecially the scene where Near stares at the screen with eyes full of rage. Intro scene with L was also really cool. I really miss him. Also can't forget about the Monster speech, that was fantastic scene and a good change compared to the manga speech. It added more depth to L's character, as Manga L doesn't have much.
All in all, this is my take on the movie. Despite its short runtime, it portrays the characters effectively and presents the original story faithfully. It does it's absolute best to respect the source material. However, the film does feel a bit rushed. I give it a rating of 7.5. It could have benefited from another 20â30 minutes to improve the pacing and include a few more scenes. Still, it was a good film.!<

Before it I had a neutral opinion on light/kira and Misa but sonehow seeing them act not evil for a while made me absolutely hate them when they got their memories back... I know a lot of people dislike that arc though

I know it would be slightly out of character for light because his deduction of namikawa but letâs just say he thought to have higuchi as the mole despite you know (spoilers to new show watchers)

What's Headcanon/Unproven that you believe or heard that's DN-related?
I'll go first, the eye deal would not have shortened Lightâs life.

Probably the discussionâs already been had several times, but I couldnât find these exact talking points anywhere else online, so here we go.
1) Ethnicity The dudeâsâŠ. maybe/maybe not Japanese? Obviously itâs kind of like, the main plot of the show that the death note does not work for Aliases. Meaning that manâs name was truly âLind L. Taylorâ (probably why he was picked). I donât have to tell you thatâs not a Japanese name. Despite this, he was picked by L, brought to Japan to broadcast in Japan where he speaks Japanese with a perfect Japanese accent.
The manga also has a specific style that we see several times for drawing foreign people, and Lind L. Taylor is not drawn in this style- he looks Japanese. (Photo for reference)
Is he American-born Japanese? Maybe, but why is his last name Taylor? Was he adopted? Then weâre back to number 1! why does he speak perfect Japanese?
I mean- I only see this happening this literally one way- he is full-blooded Japanese but was adopted by a western couple where at least one parent happened to be Japanese anyway and so was raised speaking Japanese with his mother, who was married to his American or British Father, Taylor.
He also COULD be a foreigner who just happened to get absurdly good at Japanese through hard study, and lived there for 20 years or something and was able to get rid of his accent (insanely hard to do for an English speaker given how different the two languages are) and then that kind of man ends up on death rowâŠ? YeahâŠ
2) Lâs immorality** *Imagine youâre on death row and you get approached to participate in an experiment to play a detective on TV to narrow down where a criminal is. Maybe youâre not told how dangerous this is, maybe you are⊠regardless, I donât know about you guys, Iâd say no thanks. What are they gonna do? Kill me? *Ha.
So the obvious theory is that he was cut a deal. âDo this, if you survive, you can walk.â
But this is L. He knew Kira would kill Taylor. That was the whole point of the experiment, betting on that very result. So L bald-faced lied to a man about his final fate to narrow down where Kira was, deliberately hiding that he was doomed bait. Weâre supposed to believe L is the good side of justice, and heâs the one who doesnât believe in what Kira is doing, but that was pretty Kira-esque of you, L.
Number 2 is plausible, but just kind of spits in the face of Lâs character. Number 1 seems like an impossibility overlooked for a fictional story, which⊠yknow, ultimately, whatever.
