NEWS DISNEY VISITORS TO JUNEAU - 8-12-26 Update: Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Flooding

Disney guests coming to Juneau:

The National Weather Service and USFS have alerted us that flooding is occurring, with the Mendenhall Lake and River cresting around 7:00AM AKDT on Thursday. Impacts from flooding may last through the weekend, depending on severity.

From the U.S. Forest Service:

  • The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (MGVC) building, parking lots, and roads will be closing Wednesday (Aug 12) afternoon/evening, depending on flood progression.
  • MGVC shoreline trails are closed (Nugget Falls, Photo Point, Steep Creek).
  • West Glacier trails and roads are closed.
  • Mendenhall Campground is closed and evacuated, and Skater ’s Cabin Road is barricaded at the Forest Service boundary.

Trails and closure areas will reopen post-flood as soon as the Forest Service is able to assess the conditions of the trails, bridges, and walkways. Once the trails are clear and safe to use, they will be reopened.

If your excursion is impacted, you will be notified by the operator. Individuals or organizations who enter the area while officially closed are subject to steep fines and jail time.

[Travel Juneau](traveljuneau.com) will have the latest information; when you arrive in Juneau, stop by one of our visitor centers on the dock for the latest information.

It was my first Disney cruise! I’m a huge Encanto fan and Mirabel is my top favourite Disney character. I’ve met her once at Disneyland California and twice at Disney on Ice, but the cruise experience is where Mirabel went above and beyond! I wore a disneybound of her and she was unbelievably sweet, holding my hands throughout most of the meet and greet, and made me feel very relaxed.

We connected so much during an Encanto celebration that I decided to visit after the next celebration a few hours later. She remembered my name and told me it means a lot when guests visit again and taught me a Colombian dance! This is where she went above and beyond. I have a Mirabel loungefly backpack that I love and always carry with me.

Mirabel wanted to sign my loungefly and asked if she could sign it 🥹 even took her time to find the perfect spot for the signature. I was not expecting that, especially since I was thinking about asking her myself.

On my final night, I met Mirabel, said my farewells and she told me that she will always be in my heart. She made my cruise such a lovely and magical experience. I’ll never forget her and her kindness 💗

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for confirming this is not a new change.

Cannot personally confirm, but I was just reading this article on the Disney Food Blog that said coffee cards are no longer transferable between sailings. Apparently you will have to purchase 5 specialty coffees in one sailing to redeem the free one now. 😭

TRIP PLANNING Which would you do?

We are currently on board the destiny. It is our first Disney cruise (though not first cruise as we cruise with royal typically). Looking at booking one next year. We are looking at the destiny or the fantasy. The fantasy is better timing wise and price wise (about $700 cheaper) however will we be disappointed going from the destiny to the fantasy?

Which would you choose?

TRIP PLANNING Add a 4-day on?

Advice needed

We booked a 3-night sailing out of Singapore in March for spring break and bought our flights already. The original plan was to arrive 5 nights early, spend time in Singapore, sail a 3-night on the Adventure then head home.

But logistics wise, I was thinking instead of spending 5 nights in Singapore, we arrive a day early, do a back to back 4-night (now with a port in Langkawi, Malaysia) followed by our 3 night then head home. Cost wise it’s really only about a $1500 difference. Can’t really decide. Open to head all suggestions TIA

PORT ADVENTURES Cozumel

We're going on our first non Bahamas cruise in March. We're on the Destiny western caribbean that ports at Cozumel. We only picked this cruise because the time worked best with our schedules. I'm going to be honest, I'm a lazy cruiser. I love our Bahamas cruises where we only get off the boat for Castaway or Lookout. I have a 9 year old son and a husband that stresses out easily at new things. What would be an excursion you would recommend that would be worth us getting off the boat?

DISCUSSION Cast Member Badge

I'm trying to recreate the "Creating Magic at Sea" badge. I'm having trouble verifying the colors from pictures of actual badges online. I'm pretty sure the text and logo at the top and bottom of the badge are blue/navy. I can't tell if the name at the center and hometown are also blue/navy or if it's black. Thanks!

DISCUSSION Believe Criticism

I'm preparing for my down votes but the Wish 2.0 criticism of the Believe is a bit misguided. So they will both have a Frozen themed dinner, with different shows.

Do we really care what the theme of the sweet shop is?

The similarities it has with other wish class ships makes it more of a Wish Class conglomerate than strictly a Wish 2.0.

I love the atrium design, I'm excited about the Encanto show, and I'm excited that another ship will have Tangled, because it has been my favorite show to date. I even like the themes of some of the other bars like the Wishing Well, Skygazers, and Sea Notes.

For those of us with kids who love Ana and Elsa, we now have an option for a cruise longer than 3-4 nights where they can meet them.

Anyways, my 2 cents.

DISCUSSION Have you ever been denied a stateroom because you are a party of two?

My husband called in this morning to make a booking on the Believe for a 5 day in January 2028.

When we were on the Destiny back in February, there was a nice couple in the room next to us. Just two people. We chatted in the hall and they mentioned how pleased they were with their stateroom. They were nice enough to invite us to take a look on the last day of the cruise. Very nice room with lots of space. My husband gets a bit claustrophobic at times and made a mental note of the room number to try to book the next time we sailed the Wish class.

So today he called in. Got a rep on the phone who told him he was her first call of the day. He told her what he wanted and she couldn’t find the room. She suggested he call back at 9:30 when the supervisors come on shift - which sounded a little strange but ok.

He called back. Spoke to someone again and explained everything. Was placed on hold for a supervisor. Supervisor gets on the line and asks my husband if we plan to have any more people traveling with us in the room. He says no it’s just the two of us. She then says well then the room you are requesting is unavailable. Offered us the room next door - same room we had on the Destiny.

He asked if she was denying us the room because we were a party of two. She deflected and wouldn’t answer the question.

Now I get it. It’s a bigger room that they could make more money on with more people in it. But does that mean as a party of two I’m only allowed certain rooms? What if for arguments sake I wanted the Tower Suite? Would I be denied that as a party of two?

This hits me the wrong way. Or am I taking it wrong? Do other cruise lines only allow couples in certain rooms? I’ve never heard of this before.

Edited to add: I double checked the deck plans for the Destiny. It does not show as an accessible room. It was room 7504. Granted I could be looking at it wrong but when we were in the room it didn’t have any of the handicap accessible features.

I’m going to assume it was because it was a larger room and it being a new ship, they didn’t want to sell it to two people. I can understand that but I still think that’s a little off - again what if I wanted to book a one bedroom suite? Would I be denied that due to only having two people?

Edit 2: I’m going to call them when I get off work in about an hour and see what they say this time.

For those that asked - we called in because we had a placeholder we wanted to use and that never works for us on line. The placeholder was not the problem - they booked us using it in the room next door.

I’ll update with what I find out after my call.

Edit 3 (and probably final): So after calling and talking to a supervisor last night who really didn’t seem want to say the wrong thing, I’ve pieced together that this is a room they sort of hold in some kind of reserve and only release it upon request and that request has to be approved by the “revenue” department. Our request apparently was not approved. So that’s where we are. Still seems weird to me but it is what it is. The supervisor seemed uncomfortable and did not want to say too much or the wrong thing.

TRIP PLANNING Trying to book Believe, but it still says coming soon and won’t let me select it

To answer the obvious, yes I am logged in. Yes I am platinum (I know flair says gold - I don’t know how to update.) Yes I have tried different browsers and devices

Is anyone else having this issue? Kinda panicking and don’t know what to do. Really did not want to call DCL. I’m at WDW today

If it makes any difference, I’m trying to book with my placeholder

It’s just so weird and I’m so frustrated

ONBOARD ACTIVITIES What's the point with all the Cheaters?

I just got back from the a cruise aboard the Disney Wonder, and while I had a fantastic time overall, I have to say the amount of apparent cheating during music trivia was ridiculous. So much so that it's almost funny.

70s Music Trivia

During 70s night, the questions leaned heavily toward classic rock, disco, and funk (Lynyrd Skynyrd, ELO, Led Zeppelin, the Bee Gees, etc.). I did pretty well, but two groups somehow managed to score a perfect 40 out of 40, which was impressive.

The tiebreaker question was: "What is the exact length of the Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight'?"

Now, I worked in the music business for 20 years, so I've been exposed to just about every genre of music. In fact, "Rapper's Delight" was the very first vinyl record I ever bought. Even I couldn't tell you the exact runtime of that song off the top of my head.

But somehow, one of the contestants knew the EXACT length of the song. Not close. Exact. The host actually said "This is only the second time ever it's happened where someone got the exact length of a song to the second"

What are the odds?

80s Music Trivia — This Was the Worst

I got every question right except one. They played such a short clip of a Pointer Sisters song that it just didn't register with me.

Meanwhile, a group of women sitting next to me kept audibly saying things like "What is this one?" and "I've never heard this!" I specifically remember them struggling with Devo, Thomas Dolby, and Tears for Fears, among others. Most of the 80s ones were easy for me so before I wrote my answer down, I'd sneak a glance at that group and they looked dumbfounded and weren't writing anything down.

Here's where it gets interesting. For whatever reason, the host decided not to have everyone exchange answer sheets. Instead, we were told to grade our own. Of all the trivia nights that I went to they only did this for the 80s music night, not sure why.

I left my Pointer Sisters answer blank and gave myself zero points for it because, you know, that's how trivia works. Everything else I got right.

When the host started announcing scores, she asked people to call out if they had that score or higher. At 36 I think everyone dropped out, I was still in. At 37, still in. At 38, I called out again. I thought I won since nobody else was saying anything. The she asks if anyone got 40?

And wouldn't you know it? The same group of women who had been loudly admitting they didn't recognize multiple songs suddenly had a perfect 40 out of 40.

Yaaaaa Right!

These weren't obscure moments where they were quietly debating between two answers. They were openly saying they had no idea what several of the songs were. Yet somehow, after grading their own papers, they got every single answer correct.

And Then I Actually Saw It Happening

I attended another trivia session later in the cruise and, unfortunately, ended up sitting near the same group again.

This time, I noticed one of the younger women looking up answers on her phone during the game. Whether she was using Shazam or searching for answers, I couldn't say for certain, but she was clearly using her phone and then talking to the woman who was writing down the answers. When she noticed me looking, she quickly put it away.

Then, when it came time to exchange papers for grading, they refused to hand theirs over to the people sitting next to them.

Interesting, isn't it? I think other tables saw them as well so they decided not to get 40/40 again since it would have been so obvious.

All This for a Cheap Cruise Medal? Look, I understand that trivia is supposed to be fun. I'm competitive, especially when it comes to music, but if someone genuinely knows more than I do, good for them. That's part of the game.

But cheating at a harmless music trivia game on a Disney cruise? For what? A little plastic or rubber medal? If winning a meaningless cruise medal is so important that you need to look up answers and inflate your score, then by all means, enjoy your medal. Go home to your pathetic little life and tell everyone how you won those medals or better yet, put them on eBay and get your $14.99 for your 1980s Daisy Trivia medal. Maybe you need it to help pay off your next cruise.

Personally, I'd rather lose honestly than win something that way.

It's just amazing to me that grown adults would go to those lengths over something so petty. I think the next cruise I'm going to make my own game of 'Catch the Cheater' and I'll have medals sent to their room.

I was looking back at my last trip and rediscovered this video I took of the Disney Dream’s lobby. There’s just something truly wonderful about the design of a Disney cruise that puts a smile on my face. Makes me more excited for the next sailing that I’ll be going on in just about a month from now.

The Wish is the next ship that I’ll be sailing on and I can’t wait to see it!

This was given to me by a friend who worked on the magic, I got it a few years later from them. It was a really nice jacket I used to wear until the zipper broke and I retired it.

I took the pictures today after finding it in a storage box. I also have one of the end tables from one of the ships too.

DISCUSSION First Cruise and Now I Think I Have a Problem

Hopefully this post will be less controversial than my first one about the trivia cheaters. 😂

This was my first cruise and now I'm hooked. I never thought I was the type of person who would enjoy a cruise, but I had the greatest time.

I can't be the only one sitting around thinking, "A week ago tonight we were sitting in Triton's eating some incredible dessert." I've even been tracking the Wonder on one of those cruise ship apps just to see where it is.

I've always been a big Disney fan in my own way. I'd go to Disneyland any chance I got, but for some reason I never really thought about going on a Disney cruise. Now I'm wondering why the hell I didn't do this sooner.

I'm already thinking about doing a much longer cruise, and I've even been trying to figure out how I could work remotely while on the ship. Although from what I've heard, the Wi-Fi isn't all that great, especially for streaming and video calls.

Is this how it starts? Am I about to start throwing ridiculous amounts of money at Disney cruises?

Seriously, how many of you felt this way after your first cruise?
