Block (cash app ) technical interview

• Upvotes

Has anyone done an AI assisted technical interview with block before? What sort of questions can I expect? Is it leetcode style hard problems or more day to day practical ones? Haven’t done these AI assisted interviews before so I’m not too sure what to expect.

Anyone have experience with Resideo's Graduate Product Development Engineer role?

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has applied for or has experience with the Graduate Product Development Engineer position at Resideo in Auckland.

Curious about what the interview process is like, how many stages there are, and what sort of questions they typically ask.

Would appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Would a part-time master’s in AI help a backend dev move into AI/ML?

I’m a backend developer in Australia looking to move into AI/ML roles. Considering a part-time Master of IT majoring in AI at QUT while continuing to work.

Has anyone here done something similar? Did the degree help you land a role, and were you able to transition while still studying? Or would you focus on projects and getting AI experience at work instead?
Keen to hear from people who’ve made the move or hire for these roles.

Has the job market actually improved or am I just seeing more ads?

I’ve started having a look at dev jobs on Seek again after not really paying attention for the past year or so. There seem to be plenty of listings, but it’s hard to tell if things are actually picking up or if companies are just leaving ads up.

Haven’t properly started applying yet, so I’m wondering what it’s been like for people who are looking at the moment. Are you actually getting replies and interviews, or is it still a struggle to get anywhere with applications?

FDM AC Preparation - tech interview advice?

Hi everyone,

I have an assessment centre coming up for FDM’s Graduate Software Engineer role. I think it’s worth giving it a go, as I don’t have much interview experience yet.

They’ve said there will be two 30-minute interviews. I’m not too worried about the behavioural interview, as I received positive feedback on that part in my last interview. However, I’m a bit unsure how to prepare for the technical one.

Has anyone been through this before? I’d appreciate any insights into the format and the types of technical questions they ask. Thanks in advance!

Resume Review - Final Year International Student

I'm an international student about to graduate. I have a "return offer" right now but its contingent on the company having the capacity come Feb. I don't want to risk it so I'm looking for more solid graduate roles and preparing myself to apply again if things don't work out.

I want ideally tech companies (big-tech or small-tech idc) because their interview processes in my experience are far more concrete than gambling on one-way interviews.

Questions:

- I added a fine tuning project over another full-stack personal project for variety. The full stack project is literally the most basic crud operations + auth but would it fit more if I am applying for full stack roles even if I have a lot of full stack experience anyway. I'm applying for AI engineer roles as well and am trying to get more ML projects so I'm flexible for guidance.

- I bolded certain tech skills because I assumed this would be skimmed by a recruiter looking to see if they match with the listing so I change the bolding for each job I apply to. Should I bold the metric and impacts as well or would that make it harder to read.

- In your opinion should skills go at the top below education or at the bottom. I followed the format of Jake's resume which places them at the bottom but curious to know people's thoughts.

Ik rn the first step is a take home where I present a project as if it’s to a client etc. but when I asked what the future of the interviews look like she just said one is an onsite interview. Just wondering if anyone knows the details

Unpaid internship interview crashout

I'm a cs student at Usyd and was looking for internships. I came across this one swe internship offered at an eCommerce platform (~10 employees) in Sydney that I applied to. I had a phone screen followed by an in person interview.

The phone screen was pretty simple, and I was invited to the office. I was speaking directly with the founder of the business and learnt that a lot of work was needed. I was expected to build and deploy 3 RAG chatbots, enhance website UI, build and manage a data pipeline for store inventory, set up 3 AWS RDS databases along with a complete data ingestion pipeline, and some small cron jobs (best of the requirements I could gather as the owner wasn't from a technical background). Well I expected all of this from an swe role and asked who I would be working with or be supervised by. Turns out NO ONE. The current developer was on a vacation and I had to take over his job for the next 4 months, strict 3 days a week in office. I was skeptical when I heard this but decided to go on with the conversation to better understand their requirements.

Then came the banger when I brought up the topic for compensation - it was going to be 4 months of UNPAID work. I was pretty shocked when I heard this because this store owner literally wanted production grade services built and running. After trying to make my point that me putting in 24 hours a week (possibly more as requirements were vague af and will def change) should mean that I get paid at least minimum wage for my work, this guy started getting annoyed and said that only my travel expenses would be covered. I just asked this person how much credit would I be given for AWS and APIs, and he said I will be given A$30 for my monthly claude/gpt subscription and I should manage everything within that.

?????

Bruh I legit told this guy that his requirements won't be met as A$30/m won't cover jackshit in terms of the services he requires. This dude just said that maybe I'm someone who cannot develop these within a given budget and I'm a below avg developer.

?????

When I got up to leave saying that I'm not interested anymore, this dude says this experience will help me a lot as I'm an international student. Bruh are international students really viewed as free labour and nothing more? (we literally pay ~A$150k in fees)

And if you're gonna run unpaid internships then fkn make it clear in the job desc in the advertisement and not midway through a fkn interview.

Is remote work becoming a career disadvantage for juniors?

I understand why companies want people in the office when they’re starting, but I’m curious how much of a disadvantage fully remote work is for junior developers. A lot of the senior engineers I see can work remotely without an issue, while juniors seem to have fewer options. Has anyone noticed this affecting their career progression?

Australian Investment Banking Analyst looking to move to the US on an E-3 visa - any advice?

Hi everyone,

I’m a 24-year-old Australian citizen looking to relocate to the US, ideally New York, on an E-3 visa. For context, my long-term partner is based in New York.

About me:
- Investment Banking Analyst with around 4 years of experience across investment banking, M&A, corporate advisory and investments.
- Previously worked at a Big Four firm, boutique advisory firm and investment firm.
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Finance and Economics).
- Open to opportunities across investment banking, corporate finance, corporate development, strategy consulting and other related fields.

From my understanding, my background should put me in a good position for an E-3 visa, subject to securing a qualifying job offer.

The biggest challenge has been finding employers willing to consider E-3 candidates. Many seem unfamiliar with the visa and automatically associate it with H-1B sponsorship, despite the E-3 being considerably simpler and less expensive.

Has anyone successfully navigated this process? How did you find employers open to E-3 sponsorship? Are there particular companies, recruiters or contacts you’d recommend?

I’ve been applying extensively, but even getting past the initial sponsorship question has been surprisingly difficult.

I’m flexible on opportunities and ready to relocate quickly once the necessary arrangements are in place.
Any advice, experiences or connections would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Will I regret declining VP SWE offer?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Will I regret declining the offer? In the payments team, I have another offer- another offer is not as good (in terms of money) but it has much better WLB. Will I regret loosing almost $50K on the table?

Specially with 5 days a week in JPMC vs 3 days a week in other place (non banking). JPMC may have better tech but well it comes with a price.

What would you do?

Is it really that bad in JPMC like is it really too toxic and PIP culture?

Is it a lie that there is growth in tech industry?

The current data says there is a growth in general but is that true?

People here are saying its getting worse and worse and that tech will die and we should change fields.

So should i give up and seek something else instead of working hard on something will die?

What are tech interviews actually like at the moment?

I haven’t interviewed for a dev job in a few years and I’m probably going to start applying again soon.

I’ve been doing a bit of prep and keep getting sucked into all the LeetCode stuff online, but I’m not sure how much of that actually comes up here. I’m fine with coding, but I really don’t want to spend every night memorising weird problems that I’ll never use at work.

For anyone who’s interviewed recently in Australia, what were the interviews actually like? More practical coding stuff, system design, or a bunch of algorithm questions?

Is being good at AI tools becoming more useful than learning another framework?

I've reached the point where I’m less impressed by another technology on a CV and more interested in whether someone can actually ship something.

Knowing another JavaScript framework is useful, but being able to use AI tools to investigate an unfamiliar codebase, write tests, debug something properly and still understand what the code is doing seems much more practical to me.

The danger is obviously becoming dependent on the tool and not understanding your own code.

Best career path/advice in tech Sydney

Hey everyone.

I'm a recent grad now working as a DevSecOps engineer. Since I am early in my career, would like to get advice on what career path (roles/skills to invest in) would be the most optimal in terms of pay/compensation, taking into consideration the current and future climate of the industry. Would also appreciate advice on any companies I should aim to get into, if they are worth it.

Thanks in advance

Getting a job offer in Australia while living in NZ

I am a Kiwi who is looking to relocate to Australia. I have been applying to numerous positions (mainly Sydney and Melbourne) but so far these have been rejected or ignored.

In my applications I make it clear that I'm looking to relocate and am eligible to work in Australia (NZ citizen); I also don't currently have a job so there is no notice period meaning I could relocate sooner than most.

I certainly appreciate that it would be easier to get a job if I was currently physically in Australia (ideally in the city where the job is), but my question is how much more difficult am I making it for myself being currently located in NZ? Are there any other NZers in a similar position to me who have found success? Would it be better to just send my CV to recruiters rather than applying for specific roles?

Update to add a little detail about my experience: just under 2.5 years' industry experience before returning to uni to do a PhD which I have recently completed. I have also been applying to roles in NZ and am being interviewed for 3 at the moment (including one requiring relocation within NZ), so I don't think my CV and applications are completely hopeless.
