Troubleshooting | Windows Google AI overview stopped responding when I ask a follow up question.

Post image

Whenever I do a google search the AI overview normally pops up at the top, when I try to ask a follow up question, it usually takes me to a chat space to continue the conversation, this is normal.

Recently, when I ask a follow up question, it takes me to the chat room like usual, but after that everything stops working. There were no response at all and every single button in the UI stopped working. It wouldn't even let me send a response after that, as pressing enter just jumps the text to a new line, and the 'send' button, (the blue upwards arrow button) completely disappeared.

I came to a conclusion that this might be an error tied to my goggle account.

What I've tried:

  • Using ai mode on an incognito window - works
  • Using ai mode after logging into my account on the incognito window - doesn't work
  • Cleared cache, cleared history, relogging in - doesn't work
  • Tried it on other devices - doesn't work
  • Different browsers - doesn't work
  • Using different accounts - works

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: It is fixed now

Exactly the same and I've even tried all the same things that you mentioned in the bullet points and the results match with yours. And it even started to happened exactly yesterday, same as this post. So is this a google bug that's affecting many but not all accounts currently?

A few questions for you, if you don't mind:

Is your affected google account currently signed in to any school or company devices? (Mine is, but it has been signed in weeks before the issue just started yesterday.)

Does your affected google account has an active Google One Pro subscription? (Mine does.)

So first, this my personal account so I'm not using it for school or business. Second, yes I do have an active Google One Pro subscription with the student offer

This is my personal account too, not a school managed account, but I've signed it in on my school computer. So I guess the second point is more interesting, as I do have the same type of subscription as yours. I found the following thread on reddit, reporting a somewhat different issue a few months ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/1u79pyo/i_cant_use_ai_mode_on_my_main_account/

In one of the replies, AI suggested:

It is an account-level backend bug on Google's servers. Because your main account is flagged with a Google One AI Premium/Pro plan, it is constantly being subjected to server-side updates, feature tests, and subscription handshakes. Right now, a known glitch is causing Google’s server-side configuration to push a corrupted interface layout cache to specific accounts, completely hiding the AI entry points shortly after a sync.

Guess I'll just wait for it to be fixed since apparently we are not the only ones affected. I would be curious to know if most people affected are Pro subscription users.

Still not fixed. Been super annoying. Never in my life did I think ai overview was this helpful until my niche follow up questions aren’t being answered.
