The Black Forest Restaurant in Harrison Hot Springs, BC has filed two LMIAs to hire 3 foreign workers as they claim they can't find 2 Cooks and 1 Restaurant Manager for the same hourly wage of $38.50 per hour.

Covid Tests

15 Upvotes

Anyone know where in town to get a few rapid covid tests? We've checked Walmart but they don't offer them anymore.

Don't comment if you're going to call Covid a myth or anything dumb like that. These are immune compromised elders I just need to be sure about it just being a long case of the flu.

Red light question

22 Upvotes

For the past few years I have noticed a trend and just wondering if I’ve missed the memo. I have driven for 40+ years and was taught to pull up to the car in front at a stop light to where you can see their rear tires. I often see drivers stopping and leaving 1 or 2 car lengths between the vehicle in front of them. Why such a big gap? With how much traffic we now have in Chilliwack, why not pull up so that more vehicles can get through the light? Is it just me noticing this?

Forever homes Cat rescue

4 Upvotes

⚠️ My experience with ForeverHomes CatRescue — Please be cautious.

I want to share my experience with a cat rescue in BC because I’m genuinely heartbroken and concerned.

Recently, I made the incredibly difficult decision to surrender my two cats, Chloe and Diesel, to ForeverHomes CatRescue. I trusted this rescue to provide them with a safe, loving environment.

Since Sunday, I’ve repeatedly asked for something incredibly simple: one photo of each cat so I could see that they’re okay.

For almost an entire week, I was told:

* “I’ll do it tomorrow.”
* “I forgot.”
* “I promise I’ll do it tomorrow.”
* “Remind me again.”

Despite multiple promises, I have yet to receive a single photo.

When I finally expressed my frustration, the conversation became defensive and hostile. I was told that I couldn’t possibly understand how difficult running a rescue is.

Eventually, I asked to have my cats returned. The rescue agreed, but told me I must e-transfer $60 for their microchips before we could even arrange a pickup.

I have NEVER refused to pay the $60. I have repeatedly offered to pay the full amount when collecting my cats. That offer has been rejected.

I understand that animal rescue is incredibly demanding, and I respect the people who dedicate their lives to helping animals. However, I also believe communication, transparency, and professionalism are important when people are trusting you with their beloved pets.

I am not making accusations of animal abuse, but I believe my concerns deserve to be taken seriously. I plan to contact the BC SPCA to request guidance and report my concerns.

I’m sharing this because I believe other pet owners deserve to know about my experience before making such an emotional and permanent decision.

Please research any rescue thoroughly, ask questions, and make sure you understand the surrender agreement before signing anything.

I just want to know that Chloe and Diesel are safe.

Green waste disposal

5 Upvotes

I live in an apartment with only garbage and recycling. I’m wondering where I can get rid of my garden waste (old soil, dead plants) preferably for free. When I used to live in a house, I could just fill the big green waste bag and put it on the street and they would take it. I can’t bring myself to throw it into the general trash. I live in Northern chilliwack. Any suggestions appreciated.

Black and White Flag Stickers.

9 Upvotes

Been noticing lots of black and white canadian flag stickers on cars and trucks lately. Wondering if they have any special meaning or are connected to a movement or are they just normal patriots who prefer monochrome because of modern design sensibilities or....?

Thanks you for answering.

I recently moved to Chilliwack. I got a bit lost the other day out by the farming fields. I passed several farms who were selling large, beautiful chrysanthemums. Can anyone give me a suggestion where I could find those farm again? 🌼

Who is hiring locally for someone with no car?

0 Upvotes

Hello, asking for a friend who is currently unemployed after working on the oil rigs in Alberta for quite a long time. They flew back to BC during their week off (Two weeks in work camp then one week off) but left their car there. Then they were laid off.

They need a permanent full-time job that makes at least $30 a hour and is accessible to someone without a vehicle at the moment. Trades based, labourer, anything blue collar type.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on where to apply to!

Thank you.

Stupid hypothetical: what if our city ended up travelling back in time to the Holy Roman Empire, 1632?

13 Upvotes

Okay so recently I read the series 1632 by Eric Flint, and the premise of that series is that a small American town accidentally gets hit with a time shard because of some drunk aliens, and they end up getting sent back in time to the year 1632 smack dab in the middle of the holy Roman empire during the thirty years war.

Now, that got my noodle cooking and it got me thinking: what if they happened to our city? What steps would we need to take for survival? A lot of things have changed from the year 2000 when that book came out and today.

Looking for friends (Board Games, TTRPGs and more)

16 Upvotes

Hi All,

I (39M) just immigrated to the area from Oregon to be with my wife (35F) of two years.

I am looking to make new friends while I settle and situate myself in my new home.

I have played many TTRPGs over the past 20 years both as player and game master and am looking to connect wherever I may fit in.

Systems I have played recently: D&D (2014), Cypher, DaggerHeart, & Draw Steel.

I have also played FATE, Fantasy AGE, Modern AGE, AD&D, D&D 3.5, Pathfinder 1.

I also enjoy a wide variety of cooperative and low stress competitive board games, Basically anything you might have seen on Wil Wheaton's TableTop and then some.

For hobbies outside gaming I enjoy cooking, baking, art and creative writing.

Looking for something between weekly and monthly in frequency. And I plan to look to see if Bastion has any drop-in events.

Thanks!

If you were to run for mayor, what changes would you make to the city?

12 Upvotes

With the municipal elections coming up, I wanted to ask this: if you were to run for office on that level, and assume that you win, and that the budget is big enough to do sweeping changes if you so desire, what policies would you implement? I'll go first (some of these might be spicy opinions fair warning):

- Before we build any more apartment buildings, I would rezone certain high traffic areas in order to expand the roads to make congestion less problematic, right now we still have the streets of a small city when we are becoming a big one. With that said I would also like to see more standardized bike lanes. They're so shotty right now, end randomly, it's incredibly unsafe, we need to treat it like any other part of the road like a bus lane.

- I would like to see potentially getting that funding and rezoning for another general hospital in the city, our nurses are getting so stressed by the continuing growth; it's getting to a point where wait times are up 15 hours. We desperately just need another general hospital.

- I think there's certain bylaws that are overreaching and should be revoked. The big one for me is that you aren't allowed to sleep in an RV in someone's parking lot. That's fucking stupid, and I've personally had bylaw called on me because my grandparents were sleeping in their RV. This bylaw just disenfranchises the poor. I honestly couldn't give less of a shit if you think it's some blight in your neighborhood.

- Probably another controversial one, but grass length laws are kinda silly, and they are a slap of into the face of people who can't afford a lawn mower. I do understand it as well, of course, but I would also like the see, and would encourage, the planting of native vegetation in lawns over Bermuda grass, which is an incredibly invasive species and imo does not even look that great. So yea, I would like to rewrite the bylaws so that you can have vegetation and tall grass if you so desire. Obviously not 40 feet or something, but more than the current ten inches.

- I would like to see more city sponsored charity auctions, we have a lot of great charities in our city and it would be nice to see some community participation.

- I would like to see, and I guess this is a general political opinion, the council be fat more transparent with the inner workings of the day to day. I feel as though even though they are just local representatives, having some sort of blog or tiktok or what have you where you aren't filtering yourself through these highly selective posts by your campaign managers would be highly beneficial. You know, be honest in like look, the budget was not very good this year, or we are currently at an empass of this idea we are working on, etc.
