Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

The one decent open top one I found the chick apparently got pregnant by the cat.

Cat with asthma

• Upvotes

My cat female, spayed, 4 years old
She’s so active and she loved to play a lot jumping running, etc. even when I play with her, she will jump and rub until she gets tired. I try my best not to let her play aggressively, but this is her way of play.
And she have asthma so sometimes when she play aggressively, she will get asthma attack so what to do on these cases I give her her medication’s but how to let the playtime be more gentle for her, so not to trigger her asthma

How often do you brush your cat’s teeth?

I was doing once per week, which was good for a while. But the vet just said my cat has “moderate” tartar and so I’m going to bump up the brushing to try and avoid a cleaning

A few issues with feeding my cat

Hello all! i am a first time cat owner and my baby is 7 months old. i was recommended to buy her purina pro plan dry food by the adoption agency, but i learned that an all dry food diet isn’t healthy. the first wet food i bought was fancy feast and it gave her diarrhea and made her poop smell very bad. I have now switched to tiki cat and no issues, she loves it. However these cans are very small and i feel like she is hungry shortly after eating, but i don’t think i can afford to buy so many cans of this brand it is just a bit too expensive for me. Is there any healthy budget friendly recommendations? I’m guessing the stuff with fillers is what upsets her tummy so id like to avoid that. thank you!

Help removing matted hair from my very grumpy cat.

Luna is my elderly cat of 14 years. She does clean herself, but she struggles to reach the far sides and hip areas. She is gradually gaining lumpy, matted hair. The thing is, she's a right grumpy sod and attacks and bites me if I try to brush/comb it out. Any suggestions, please!

Skipped Breakfast

Hi everyone!

One of my girls (7 months) has been acting a little strange this morning. I noticed that she wasn’t sleeping in my room with me last night, but figured she was out doing something in the living room.

This morning, when I went to give them their wet food, she sniffed it and left it alone. She usually scarfs down her breakfast with her sister. I was obviously immediately worried, so I checked on the following:

- No pain when touching her abdomen
- Normal reaction to toys (jumping around, etc)
- Maybe a little lethargic? She usually climbs on the counter for her food, and it took her longer than usual
- I saw her go into the litterbox, scratch around a bit, but I didn’t see anything when she hopped out

Factors I’m considering:
- Stopped free-feeding dry food the night before (her and her sister are getting very chunky)
- A couple of new toys, checked on both for any torn parts - didn’t see anything. She also doesn’t have a habit of eating toys
- She LOVES eating bugs
- She chased her sister around the apartment during the crazy hours like normal last night (~7 hours before breakfast)
- My partner made a mess while cooking dinner last night, but I thought we cleaned it up. Very onion and garlic heavy meal. Just worried she got into something like that

I might be jumping the gun by making a reddit post but I have chronic anxiety so.. what else is new. My roommate is going to try to give her her breakfast again in a while. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for? Is this normal or something that can pass without bringing her in to the vet? I’m alright bringing her in, but our usual vet has been swamped recently.

Sorry for the long post!

Won’t pee in litter box

Hello,

This is to anyone who will listen. I have a 4 y/0 American short hair male cat who has had a history of peeing outside of his litter box. It used to just be infrequent but now he will only pee outside of it on the bed. Went to the vet and he was diagnosed with FLUTD. Been trying all kinds of things like litter attractants, those wall plug ins, drugs like gabapentin and prosaic. Really running out of options. Anything helps. Thanks!

Cat stressed and struggling on Doxycycline

My cat has been fighting a nasty case of pneumonia for the last 2 weeks. He was hospitalized for 36 hours and then returned home to us with a prescription for doxycycline. Up until a couple of days ago, he was perfectly happy to be taking the pill form of doxycycline but recently found out that the yummy pill pockets we've been giving him aren't actually treats but contain yucky, bitter medicine. Now, he refuses the pill so we've had to do liquid doxy.

Obviously, this isn't ideal because he is fighting us SO hard on taking it. We were at the ER for 8 hours earlier because we were afraid he aspirated it (they said it was unlikely, but we need to keep a close eye on him for the next couple days). He just took another dose and now he's pawing around his food and water bowls. He froths at the mouth after taking it and tries to spit everything out. He's currently hiding from us and doesn't trust us. We somehow have to be on this medication for at least two more weeks, more if we're unlucky, twice a day. I don't know how we're going to get through this. Is there anything we can do to make this easier on him? Is there any way we can make it less miserable for everyone involved?

He doesn't want to eat or drink immediately after taking the meds, but is willing to eat and drink after two hours or so. We just want to make this experience as minimally distressing as possible, for both him and us.

Edit: He is a 5 year old cat with asthma.

Anyone’s kittens grow out of having soft stools? 💩

My 5 month old had giardia treatment last month and is still having some soft stools. He’s otherwise fine- super high energy, playful, happy! I’m just wondering when I can finally stop supervising every poop and stop having to wipe butts and paws! He is currently on 3 different kinds of probiotics (fortiflora seemed to stop working so I’m adding in visbiome along with royal canon probiotics). I’ve read some kittens get over this sensitive stomach eventually? 🙏

Cat suddenly limping and lethargic. Hospitalized overnight with abx and fluids and seemingly ok to go home but not improving 16 h later.

Hi Vets,

My cat started limping Friday morning favoring a hind leg. By the time I got home from work she was still limping but now getting lethargic and breaths sounded a bit nasaly. She also would intermittently retch (not a full episode but once, and she did it 3 times in 4 hrs). By midnight she couldn't put much weight on her back leg and was seemingly more lethargic. Took her to a local ER clinic, they did bloodwork and X-rays and proBNP SNAP (worried about if she threw a clot).

X-rays didn't show signs of heart issues, but proBNP came back as abnormal. Without other signs of heart issues, and her being dehydrated, they thought maybe instead there's some infection and put her on IV abx+fluids for the night. She came in with 105 temp but it dropped to 103 after hospitalization. Doesn't seem like I am allowed to post the bloodwork here but it was generally normal but hyperproteinemia (9.) and hyperglobulinemia (6.4.). The vet said they were comfortable sending her home the next day but I got her and don't feel like she's doing great. She can walk around, she went and peed a lot in the litter box, but she kind of gags when I try to give her food. She has eaten a bit but not a full meal since I got her home 12 hrs ago (supposedly she ate during hospitalization too). I'm thinking I need to take her to the specialty ER vet hospital today but I'm not sure what else they can do since specialists aren't there on weekends so it's just the ER. Maybe they have the ability to get an actual quantitative BNP, and ultrasound or something. I can hear her stomach occasionally making gaseous sounds too and she seems bloated.

My other cat started doing the random retching too but is otherwise seemingly normal. Not sure if related at all.

I want to know what is going on, if it's heart failure I know what that means. I don't want her to suffer so I want to at least try to figure out what's actually going on so I can make an informed decision for her. This seemed so sudden it was quite shocking. But she was biting at her leg the last couple weeks, not sure if related...

ETA:

-13 yr old tabby, spayed

- no prior heart health issues

- obese, 17 lbs

how do i get through two weeks of recovery after neutering two male bonded kittens

Hello to anybody reading this post! I recently neutered my two male kitties. One of my kittens (Ollie) is a cryptorchid kitten which means only 1 testicle descended and the other testicle ended up being in his abdomen. Ollie got a deep incision on his belly and has a much longer recovery time. Similar to a spay. My other kitten (Oakley) got a regular neuter. They both are high energy kittens and love to play with eachother. I had to cover their cat tree because vet said no jumping. After the anesthesia wore off they were back to their normal selves. Both are eating and drinking normally. The first night I caught Oakley trying to groom Ollies male part. So the second night I had to separate Ollie because of his condition. I have to continue doing this. It has made Ollies night a lil tough and restless. I feel bad because they are mopey and want to play with eachother. They want to go on their cat tree and lie down. During the day they are loose with their soft collars and I am lucky enough to be able to watch them. Cat Tv has been a huge help but I feel bad because they are not mentally stimulated by anything else. Both kittens are on Gabapentin and another medication for inflammation. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation before? I am trying to remain positive but I am slightly going crazy since I have to move through this for the next 14 days. I am barely on day 3 😞

Cat not eating since 3 days

15 yr old cat with early CKD (detected in June), dental issues (had a cleaning in June). Have been giving special renal diet since July. She hasnt eaten anything since Friday evening, not even interested in her favorite treats. Has been gagging and puking white foam on Sat. Was otherwise fine, not hiding too much more than usual but definitely weaker.

Took her to emergency vet. xray and blood work( for kidney specific markers) came back normal. Has been on low dose anti nausea med from Sat afternoon and high dose from Sat night. They hydrated her. Prescribed appetite stimulant that we applied this morning, still no change.

What are our options here? To try at home? We dont have too much money to sink given pet medical care seems very trial and error, the visit alone costed us 1.5k and we had a kid recently. The emergency vet told us ultrasound might be the next thing to check but we might not be able to afford it especially given theres no guarantee it will lead to anything.

Advice on care, insurance and sinus infection / polyp

cat has been going to the vet multiple times a month since May. He has had a sea-saw between stuffy nose and non stop runny nose sneezing boogers.
4 different antibiotics treated for what they said was upper respiratory to then kennel cough then an injectable antibiotic in the office.
He had a culture test and 3 blood test to tell me he has feline aids making his immune system low. Its now October and I felt like no guidance and every other time I went to the vet he was out and a younger vet was filling in for him I don’t know if he is transition to retirement etc. But even when I got the call for blood sample of aids it was just like he is positive for this ok have a good day
I had to pry information like what to avoid, is he safe around other animals how does he affect others what could happen etc.

He still hasn’t recovered his entire personality has changed to docile sleepy and stays in one spot all day I made another appointment the past week and the vet now says after all that there’s nothing they can do for the cat because he probably has cancer or a beigyn polyp that only a camera procedure from a specialist could discover.
The specialist is 2 hours away from me and the vet said it can be expensive.
This cat was a stray that for the last 2 years has lived with me. I started feeding him 3 years ago and it took a year to get his trust and comfort out of the streets and into my house. He now is the best boy in the whole world is the king of the castle and sleeps in my bed. We have come a long way together but I am very financially limited and I don’t know now how to navigate thousands of dollars more expected of test or surgeries from specialist I have never seen before.
The vet doesn’t know his age he guessed around 3-5.
I want to him help him but I’m looking good guidance and help for myself to navigate. I appreciate any tips, experience, explanations thoughts etc. please 🫶

-Is there a cat insurance I can sign up for that would cover something like that?

- if you have had this surgery or check up what did it cost you?

- should I see a different vet for more opinions before a specialist 2 hours away

- does chronic stuffy nose and breathing problems because of sinus is there anything day to day to help him?
