Birthday Cakes My first attempt at cake decorating
Used way too much red food colouring gel and stuffed up a little but it was my first time decorating a cake. My daughter loves Elmo and it was her 1st birthday. Made the mistake of removing it's eyes and nose before serving in front of her though and she seemed mortified lol 😆 won't make that mistake again.

Here is some validation for you: I showed this pic to my 2 yo and they said “Elmo!”, so I think you nailed it.

You really captured the character, love the fur piping work, you did an excellent job! 🏆

Aw thanks buddy! I tried haha. Definitely keen to do more now but less food colouring, it was a sensory nightmare knowing all those little fingers at the party were spreading red everywhere. Managed to stay stain free by some miracle.

Great job!! What did you use for the eyes and nose?

u/justanotherradanimal Sep 25 '25
Its just fondant for eyes, nose and mouth.

I was 100% sure you had plopped a Roma tomato on there for the nose and called it good 😂

I thought it was an egg, like an Easter egg!

I thought it was an egg (yolk) for a second, and then my brain suggested that it was half an apricot.

Yes, I'm into all things creative like music & macrame jewellery and a qualified hairdresser but never attempted decorating a cake.

It looks great! Elmo approves!
My mom made Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles for my brothers birthday once and all the little kids were running around with red and green mouths XD

I scraped so much buttercream off before giving my daughter any as that fur was intense. The older kids loved it though.

Aww! I made a similar cake for my oldest’s 3rd birthday. It wasn’t my first attempt to cake decorating, but it was my first attempt in a while, and the first one I really loved. I never thought I’d get super into making my kids birthday cakes, but there I was on maternity leave during Covid trying to figure out how to make a birthday special for a kid who couldn’t have a party, And so I got really into it. Definitely learned a lot with that cake and cupcakes, and have made something homemade for each birthday since.
At the time I swore to God I would never dye anything red or black ever again (but I’ve gone back on that). I was thrilled with the red I achieved in the end, but went though SO much food coloring to get it!! but I think your guy has a much cuter facial expression!

Aw this is awesome, you did a great job too. Your red is perfect! I didn't realise that the colours deepen so just kept adding more hahaha. I will probably still do colour again too but actually research it better on how to get the colour needed next time. I loved the feeling of knowing I put the effort into at least the decorating so will be doing that for birthdays from now on (got to put that Amazon piping kit to good use) Love the cupcakes too!!

I would like to figure out how to get the fondant to be smooth. Like where there are wrinkles on the mouth from me rolling it out on parchment paper etc. Going to watch some videos and try and do a cactus cake for my partners bday.

What did you use for the nose? Looks amazing!
1
u/justanotherradanimal Sep 26 '25
A massive ball of fondant, I had to mix the red and yellow fondant to make the colour.

Holy cow! That looks soo professional. Did you take classes or something. You got a side hustle ready if you ever need it. Looks great.

u/justanotherradanimal Sep 27 '25
Hahahaha thank you. I assure you it was far from professional. I just watched a YouTube video and decided to try it.

Haha I was going to say it would have been awful cutting into him, your poor daughter seeing his eyes removed lol.
It looks amazing!

Instantly I was like "I've made a grave mistake". I couldn't serve anyone that much fondant though, omg.

First of all, outstanding 👏🏻. Secondly, I see your cake and I cannot help but be reminded of the monster 👹 from the opening scene 🎬 of the cinematic masterpiece that is Princess Mononoke 😅

This is so cool.
Your daughter wasn't mortified though. Maybe horrified.

Ah crap, yes you are correct! I didn't even realise, definitely meant horrified.
