Either that or one stick of 24gb.

32 is sort of overkill for a basic gaming rig anyway. Only vert certain games actually need that much for a big performance uplift. 16 is now the bare minimum for gaming and works in a lot of cases, but the full 32 is really more or a convenience and future proofing measure (the next size up that you can "easily" get and run in dual slot)

The main issue is 16gb ddr5 sucks. One stick of 16gb means single channel. 2x8gb is bad because 8gb ddr5 sticks are worse compared to 16gb sticks (disregarding capacity). You're better off going ddr4 if not going 2x16gb or more ddr5

Yep. At this rate 16gb and 32gb kits of DDR4 are pricier than they should be, but not HORRIBLE. If you can get a good bundle deal on some AM4 stuff, you can build a pretty capable little system these days for not a ton.

Yep or if you get used ddr4 you can get some nice savings too

Bought this PC and a monitor from Best Buy for $1,496, financed through Affirm at 0% for 3 months. Ended up finding a much better-performing PC at Costco for about $300 more, so I decided to return everything unopened its been 1 month.

Best Buy customer service told me to return it in-store, but when I brought everything in, the store told me to process the return over the phone because I ordered online and picked up in store. Called and got a return confirmation but never received a UPS label so I called again, and the rep said the return was already completed and refunded as an in-store return. I specifically explained that I still had both items, and they said there was nothing else to do its already been processed.

Now Affirm shows the loan completely paid off, Best Buy shows a full refund, and I still have the unopened PC and monitor sitting at home lol $1500 set up because best buy decided to out source their customer service reps who made a refund mistake

I think the $1300 Costco deal with the i7, 32gb, 2tb, and the 5060 ti 8gb is better.

Sell the gpu and spend the money on a 9070gre if you want a significantly better system for marginally more.

That deal seems to be gone

Edit: My bad, I was looking at the instacart istings. It is still available.

This is terrible, do not buy this shit. Why even bother with ddr5 if you're only getting 16gb and one of the worst AM5 cpus. Not to mention the 9600xt 16gb which is one of the biggest bait gpus of current day

Care to recommend something better at this pricing? Not finding anything comparable.

The 8700f is going to be severely kneecapped by single channel ddr5, since it has limited L3 cache. A 14400f will actually be faster in some cases with ddr4 as a result.

If you dropped down to a 500gb nvme and 16gb of ram, you can fit a regular 9070 16gb into the budget, or go for a 14600kf instead, but you need a more expensive board and cooler.

People looking for prebuilts generally aren't looking to build their own PC. Those that are comfortable probably know what parts they are looking to snipe already.

You would be surprised. People sleep on 14th gen intel CPUs. Update the bios and set core voltage manually. Plus b series boards aren’t that expensive either for a few of the ddr4 models. Most people default to am4. If you find a good deal on a used z690/z790 ddr4 board, and buy a new 14600kf for $240 and overclock it with some good ddr4 and tune it, you will get close to a 9600x.

Granted I’m an enthusiast who does overclocking and ram tuning, most people won’t.

With some encouragement, I see a lot of people originally looking for a prebuilt deciding to try building it themselves. Once they realize that they (most of the time) get more for less by building themselves and are told that building isn't that hard, they feel more confident to try it. As they should, I firmly believe building your own PC is a really good idea even if not for value purposes, for knowledge purposes. It really helps when you want to upgrade, swap parts, troubleshoot, etc to know what's in your PC and how everything connects

Good build and notes except that SSD isn't good, it's worth spending the extra $17 for WD SN5100, or only $5 more for NV3 at the very least. Also the PSU is fine but I'd personally spend an extra $5 for the Steel Legend 750w

Personally though at this budget point I may recommend a used 3080 for $365 off eBay, gives you the room to fit the 14600kf and better board and cooler along with those SSD/PSU changes. Of course if people don't want used though the 9070gre is the best value option available rn
