Build Help What would you cannibalize from this old build?

Honestly, nothing. The RAM is hypothetically reusable in a new build that uses older CPUs. But, 16GB isn't a lot and 2400 MT/s is quite slow.

The storage would technically work but it's probably over a decade old and I wouldn't trust it at this point.

Not even the Tower / PSU / Fans and such?

I was kind of thinking I could install a new motherboard, video card, and add some RAM

You can reuse the tower and fans, sure. If the PSU is also 10+ years old then I also wouldn't trust it.

But, that PC is currently worth more to sell as a whole working unit. My recommendation is to sell the whole thing and use the money to build a whole new system.

Installing a new motherboard, video card, RAM, etc. is the primary cost of a PC. The only things you would be salvaging are the cheap/free components that you can easily find used.

Ah dang... Thank you for the knowledge here mate.

What about this other thing he mentioned: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/gaming-computers/cs-9020014-na/corsair-one-i200-compact-gaming-pc-cs-9020014-na

I'm guessing it's the same story though.

What exactly are you asking about with that Corsair PC? It's much newer with much better components. It's honestly worth using as is. Upgrading or cannibalizing from it will be a lot harder due to the custom small form factor case.

Agreed. That will play a whole bunch of games at 1080.

A case never really becomes obsolete, so yes, that is usable. The rest is a bit of a 'keep together as long as it works' kind of kit.

Just take the storage, always good to keep that stuff for photos/work to keep the main fast drives free for gaming

Run crystaldiskinfo and see what health his SSD is at. If its above 90% id keep that. He can also keep the case and psu as well

You should be able to turn the SATA drive into a secondary storage drive for a NAS or HTPC computer depending on its health. Same with the barracuda drive depending on your use case

I’ve mentioned in other posts, in starting to see the old EVGA psus fail, I have now 4 different EVGA models fail in the last 2 years in my circle of friends, and I’m seeing posts about it on the forums/subreddits as well. They’re aging out. Thankfully none of the failures is cooking other components, but it still sucks.

Really depends on budget and needs, if you are just updating to a more modern ddr4 platform like AM4, I’d keep pretty much everything except the motherboard, CPU, and GPU. If going ddr5 I’d likely just start fresh.

I second this. If you plan on upgrading to AM4 you can just get the MB, CPU and GPU and use the rest as is and replace them when you deem it necessary. None of this is junk unless it's legit broken. Sell the stuff you don't want on ebay.

You might sell it whole for $200. Other than that, it's sufficiently old enough, that I wouldn't keep any of it.

What do you want to use the PC for? If you just want to play older/indy games, watch videos, write some code that PC is fine. If you want to play new AAA games you’ll need to update most of the computer.

take the whole computer and resurrect it as an pihole/pfsense box or give to an child to play minecraft with.

I dont really know what any of the parts would be good for on a newer build except maybe the power supply but why tear it apart? You couldn't use that for modern gaming but it would make a good media server or web browser you don't care about.

GPU is probably the limiting factor if you put 2080 rtx or 6600xt in there and all of a sudden it'll be very capable of top end performance from 5 years ago

The 6600K would hold both of those cards back pretty significantly. An R5 3600 gets between 2x-3x the performance compared to it.

Case and fans, PSU, RAM, and SSD, possibly the cpu cooler if you have the brackets that can fit different socket types

I would take it apart and sell all the parts.

All of it, make a decent host for proxmox containers.

1

u/BeegBunga 6h ago

What do you use that for?

I eliminated docker and run all my containers as LXC containers on proxmox. For me it's way easier and faster than learning docker. lol
