Troubleshooting Both DDR5 RAM sticks pass MemTest86 individually but fail together
Hi everyone! I'm having a strange RAM issue and could really use some help identifying the cause.
PC Specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 5 7600
- Motherboard: Colorful CVN B650M Gaming Frozen V14
- RAM: JUHOR DDR5 32GB (2x16GB)
- BIOS: Latest version (1022)
The problem:
My PC worked perfectly for months, but a few days ago it suddenly started crashing and restarting with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSODs.
What I've tested:
- RAM stick #1 in A2: PASS (4 MemTest86 passes, 0 errors)
- RAM stick #2 in A2: PASS (4 passes, 0 errors)
- One stick in B2: PASS (4 passes, 0 errors)
- Both sticks in A2 + B2: FAIL (20 MemTest86 errors at 4800 MT/s)
I've already updated the BIOS, reset CMOS, reseated the components, disabled EXPO, and even reinstalled Windows. Nothing fixed it.
Since both sticks work individually and the issue only appears when using both together, I'm suspecting the motherboard or the CPU's memory controller.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
Thanks in advance!

It can be any of the ram, motherboard, cpu. Frankly you got some odd brand components.

They're Chinese brand components, I actually pulled up the motherboard and I'm pretty sure it's a rebranded Gigabyte board, or at the very least a clone of one, right down to the packaging.
It looks like a bootleg version of the Aorus Elite AX Ice, which I actually ALSO had RAM issues with I'm almost positive was because it had a bad dip solder they manually fixed at the factory.

Both sticks in A2 + B2
Sorry to be pedantic, have you checked the motherboard manual to ensure you have the correct slot pairing?

Its the cpu or the mobo imo

Yup, I had this, had recently (a year before) replaced the ram thinking that was the issue. Replaced mobo n cpu and now the whole kit is my proxmox host. No more issues. I probably could’ve troubleshot cpu vs mobo but the thing was from 2017 or so, upgrade was warranted.

This isnt that uncommon. 2 sticks of ram is harder for the memory controller to run. You begin by updating the motherboard BIOS, since some revisions come with memory support upgrades. If that doesnt work you can try to tweak the memory and memory controller related voltages: SoC and VDDIO/VDDQ
Tweaking those voltages doesnt mean increasing them, sometimes the system will be more stable if one or some of them are actually lower.
SoC voltage aim for 1.25 or lower;
CPU VDDIO: Between 1.25v-1.35v
DRAM VDDQ/VDDIO: Around 1.35v-1.4v for 6000mhz speeds
Maybe you are running an older BIOS that degraded your cpu memory controller. Some earlier revisions put some unsafe VSoC voltages.

Yep this is what fixed this issue for me, I just ran the Ram at slightly lower volatge and it worked, after months of debugging, then I found out to lower the volatage, has been working solidly for 2 years now.

Weak IMC

Yep, that's why AMD went with their X3D CPU's, their regular CPU's are gimped by a slow IMC.

Maybe a dumb question but did you try swapping slots, like both sticks in the other dual channel pair if your board has four slots

you are right but the problem lies more on the CPU here its probably not a MB since A2 and B2 work individually i suspect the ram controller more but most of the time all of this can be fixed with just blowering the ram slot with a blower
alot of people had similar issues to this and its fixed by that
OR re-seating the CPU some times a pin is not making a good contact
try the cleaning / re-seating first

Warranty for sure. Amd jedec speeds are supposed to be guaranteed

In the past I’ve had it be a pin on the mainboard (cpu was an i7 3770k) being a bit bent.
Same problem. Both sticks work individually in every slot, but not as a pair in any pair of slots.

I wasn't getting a blue screen but hard lockups and soft power off wasn't working. Needed to force shutdown and that didn't even fully cut power to my RGB so I needed to power cycle the PSU, and after that it wouldn't boot with A2+B2 populated. Tried A1+B1 still wouldn't post. Ran both sticks through memtest individually, both passed.
What ultimately was the culprit was my motherboard. The solder joints for A1+A2 slots looked like shit, one had a massive void in it and they both had flux residue on them which leads me to believe they had a bad dip solder and were manually fixed at the factory.
Gigabyte b650 Aorus Elite AX Ice, honestly caused me a bunch of problems even besides this, ended up replacing it was an Asus ROG B850 after a year and that's been running flawlessly for me.

I've taken it apart several times, examined the pins with a magnifying glass, and they seem to be in perfect condition. I'm going to replace the motherboard to see how that goes.

These weren't the pins. These were the physical solder joints on the back of the motherboard where they soldered the A1+A2 slots in place to the motherboard. No matter how nice those pins look if you've got a bad solder joint on the slot you're plugging it into you'll never get a good connection from the component

It could really be anything tbh. I had this exact same issue (sticks tested fine individually in any slot, but fail together) on a 10th gen intel dell and it ended up being the memory. I tried them in a second system and they failed there too. Might be the last test left

This had happened to me as well with some Corsair DDR5. The sticks tested good individually but failed together, so we ended up getting some G Skill modules and everything is dandy now

Same happened to me, I had 64 ddr4 ram, and upgraded to 128. Ryzen 3700x, Asus prime x470. Chatgpt thought that memory controller was at its limit, and suggested a slight under volt of the ram. That passed the test and is stable since then (16 months)

Yes I have experienced something like that.
2 things, does the RAM has EXPO? Corsair once told me that they have DDR5 RAM for AMD and other RAM for Intel, there does not work on both. I was lucky because that happened before AI and Corsair just took them back and send me new ons.
The simplest thing to try, "reseat" the CPU, the memory controller is in the CPU, so if one of those contacts pins doesn't have perfect contact, you could have a problem. What cooler do you use?

Try manually setting your memory setting in the bios to ram manufacturer specification, and also manually set the voltage.

I am not sure anyone what is the issue in my case but have 2 modules of 4 that are failing on a motherboard but passed on another one - different model. I replaced all 4 during upgrade and the new ones have no issue. The old ones worked for 6 years with no issue so I am not sure if something was wrong on the hardware side or software aide aka BIOS.

Try entering custom speed settings.
Unfortunately the RAM is less stable at higher speeds with AMD processors.
Test out slower speeds, enter custom speed like 5600MHz or 6000MHz (if 5600 is stable). Manually set the FCLK to 2000MHz.
set CPU VSOC to 1.20v (don't leave on auto)
VDD_DRAM to 1.35v
VDDQ_DRAM 1.35v
VDDIO / MISC to 1.25v

The same thing happened to me with a Ryzen 5700X. After a year of running with the memory set to 3600 MHz, one day it crashed and stopped passing the POST test with two memory modules; with just one, it worked perfectly. I replaced the CPU and it’s working fine again. The fault lies with the memory controller. If you can, make use of the warranty.
