⌨ Discussion Bitcoin, quantum computing, and security: How prepared should crypto be?

Quantum computing has brought up new questions about Bitcoin and the cryptography protecting digital assets. Some think the threat is still far away, while others believe the industry should start preparing now.

How seriously should crypto take quantum risks today, and what should matter most when preparing: stronger security, easier migration, or keeping things simple for users?

Consider using tamper-evident storage for your hardware wallet

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey all,

The Ledger situation has shown how easily hardware wallets can be tampered with. Even if your device is currently safe, it may be worth considering a tamper-evident solution for home (or bank vault) storage.

I spent the past few years developing a solution precisely for this. A reusable tamper-evident jar for storing your hardware wallet.

In short, the lid contains thousands of black and white beads, which randomly mix and lock in place when the lid is closed tight, creating a unique pattern. When opened, the beads mix and the unique pattern is destroyed. You can simply compare a before and after image to see if it was opened.

You can check it out on https://www.entropyseal.com/

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them here.

Some real problems for Bitcoins future

As we all know, Bitcoin is the most sound and hard fork of money. Most people in this community believe in Bitcoin as do I. All the videos and books talk about the pros and how the fiat system is broken and will collapse which is true.

But the cons are still something to look into and consider

Some of them being

1.) cryptos are worse than current payment methods we have now for small purchases and slower than Visa, Mastercard, etc making it less convenient for everyday use for majority of people

2.) payments are not irreversible and many people would not be willing to assume much risk

3) for an average person, cryptos is too difficult and is a hassle for people who don’t understand

4.) volatility is still a big problem hence why it’s not a stable form of payment

  1. Having cryptos would make things harder for people and not easier and most people want the most convenient and easy way to handle things

  2. Most people just want a monetary system that works, that’s easy and forgiving and the average person doesn’t care about decentralization so we shouldnt expect people to replace their government run currencies

  3. It’s a new form of currency but behaves more like an investment and people treat it more like one comparing it to gold hence why majority of people don’t use it as money ( HODL )

  4. Has been trending more and more toward centralization because major players are controlling most of bitcoins hash power ( China controlling 80% of bitcoins mining/hash and this means China could easily censor or interfere with bitcoins network and ecosystem which I see as a major major problem )

The main problem will be adoption but not everyone and the governments wouldn’t want to resort to a currency that can’t be regulated.

I still believe in bitcoin and will continue to hold and DCA but these are some actual problems it faces and could continue to face going forward.

Feel free to correct me if I’ve said something false but I’ve been reading and doing a lot of research and was looking into the cons as well

What do you value about bitcoin?

I'll be the first to admit my understanding of the blockchain is shallow. However, I am an economist, and it seems from my perspective that there's a strict dissonance between bitcoin's usefulness as a currency and it's value as an investor asset.

I see a lot of anti-inflation sentiment in bitcoin communities, but (reasonable) inflation is indeed necessary for a healthy economy. It's, in a sense, the lubricant which keeps transactions moving at a steady pace. If the USD became a deflationary asset, consumer spending would decline as people begin hoarding currency to wait for it to appreciate in value, which would further drive down prices, exacerbating the issue. This decrease in demand would eventually cause large sectors of industry to close until prices stabilized, but with less true 'wealth' circulating than before. Or, an alternative currency would rise in place of USD so people wouldn't have to part with their 'assets' in order to make everyday exchanges.

I'm also under the impression that the privacy features are not as robust as one might hope. This is another area of tension, as if a truly private currency (say Monero) were to be introduced, governments would prevent it from being listed on any major exchanges (as they have with Monero.) So the idea of privacy cannot coincide with mainstream adoption, and yet, it seems that bitcoin advocates see both as inevitable.

I'm a person who likes learning about things I don't understand, and I would be very happy to adapt my worldview if there's something I'm fundamentally missing. But I just don't understand why bitcoin is seen as so valuable when its fundamental premise had nothing to do with appreciation (as far as I'm aware).

I can understand why the idea of a decentralized currency is attractive, but at this stage, bitcoin hardly seems to be functioning as currency at all.

What do you think?

I've been building an incremental mining game driven by real chain and price data. You start in 2009 with a CPU and grow from there through every halving and crash. It's free to play (no ads, no sign in, no trackers) and just entered beta. I'm keen on feedback to see if it's worth continuing to work on as a side project. Let me know what you think.
