🎙️ Discussion Readjustments when returning from TotK?

I've finally gone back to breath of the wild after a very long break and am enjoying it a lot. However, I've noticed a lot of "friction points" I'm feeling in terms of readjusting to botw after years spent playing TotK.

Some that come to mind include:

  • The rain! Oh my gosh, it feels like it's nearly always raining in this game (but maybe that's just Relativity at work given the lack of sticky elixirs etc)
  • Empty landscapes except at night when you get bombarded by all the most annoying enemies (keese, bones etc)
  • I keep trying to throw items or fuse to arrows 😅 been caught out a few times when I was counting on lobbing chuchu jelly to get me out of a melee mess (of annoying monsters)
  • The arrow switching. This one is actually painful. So many wasted special arrows
  • The menu navigation (keep using R and L to try to shuffle through items etc)

They're not major issues with the game or anything. Just points that I'm really feeling when trying to readjust back to this game. Also missing ascend, and the ability to move anything with ultra hand 😅 but was expecting that.

I think the friction is actually what makes BOTW a better game. The design of it is far more acutely balanced and has you thinking more deeply about how you approach the environment, tasks and challenges. TOTK just throws EVERYTHING into the ring, and often this takes away from the nuance and atmosphere, IMHO.

Basically, friction is good. Lean into it and try to stop comparing. They are different games, and that's a good thing.

yeah the friction really does make botw feel more deliberate

In the early game the stamina drain when using bows jn midair makes it more difficult to rely on it.
In totk even early in you can just get 3-4 clean headshots in even in great sky island.
And weapons are precious, and you need to proactively grab some of the respawning soldier swords and such.
The biggest annoyance remains that arrows are scarce and going on tour of shops is the easiest way to restock them

There are some perks that have less friction then tokt though, such as going to satori to get that respawning diamond under a rock, using durians to have +20 health at will, and warping the horse to your location. If you beat medoh the great eagle bow is also very cheap to buy with just one diamond.

It's ALWAYS raining when I need it to least. I loved the frog suit upgrade in TotK

I suspect if i try to replay BOTW I'll be messed up because ultrahand picks up everything and magnesis doesn't in addition to all your mentions

Doing a replay now after having finally beaten TOTK earlier this summer, and keep trying to rotate things I’m holding with magnesis

Personally i think one big factor here is playing both games immediately after each other. You can feel alot of muscle memory messing up and alot of the differences compared to having to replay the game after a long time

Same. Although, I am actually finding I enjoy replaying BoTW more than ToTK. Another thing is that there is so much less grind for armour, lol. But the extra friction is good. I love not just using Rocket Shields to solve every shrine, or using the Hover Bike to fly around everywhere.
Another one is that Lynels are not stunned by headshots in BoTW like they are in ToTK unless they’re in their fire breath animation. In ToTK it’s easy to stunlock them, especially with Tulin helping you with his avatar.

Indeed, it's nice to have to put some thought and effort in. Though oh my gosh the rain. That is where the botw grind is imo. Particularly without ability to build a shelter to use flame stuff in.

Though neither game is as mentally challenging as classics like oot - I miss those old school proper gnarly dungeons

It was the most incredible game back then. Leagues ahead of its time in terms of game play and mechanics, but also that sense of breathtaking wonder and exploration. I don't have a Switch 2 sadly and can't afford to get one any time soon (possibly not ever). But if I could I'd absolutely be hyped too. As it is, I'm going to play it again on my old N64 when I'm home for Christmas (its at my dad's place back home, as it's become a cornerstone of grandkids games nights).

I really hope they keep the dungeons as challenging as they were originally

" I love not just using Rocket Shields to solve every shrine, or using the Hover Bike to fly around everywhere." so dont do it then ?

OP, I’m doing the same thing and have noticed the same exact things! Mostly. But, it’s such a fantastic game. Per the rain, I would have to agree with you, however I think how they portrayed the rain in BOTW looks sooooo much better than TOTK.

Oh my gosh yes to this one! That was a massive improvement for sure. Kudos to whomever thought to smooth that out
