Mod team message Benzo Reading Group

Hey folks,

As your friendly 'ever learning' mod, I have recently been reviewing the literature on all things benzodiazepines, rereading the Maudsley deprescribing guidelines, and getting better acquainted with all the additional medications that people ask about here.

Myself and the other mods are very passionate about helping people navigate their way through what, for some people, is a very difficult time. And, other than those of us who have a difficult time in withdrawal, there is a further subset that also have BIND.

What is clear to us is that there is a need for better access to the limited information that exists. But also that we, as individuals, need to polish our critical thinking skills to better understand medical literature, statistical inference, and to make informed decisions.

For this reason, I am launching a fortnightly literature group focusing on benzodiazepines and adjunctive medications. We will start with three papers published recently that define BIND as distinct from withdrawal. We will then move on to a chapter by chapter reading of the Maudsley deprescribing guidelines. Thereafter it will be curated readings from both current and past studies.

Don't worry if you don't understand the readings. The best way to come to understand things is by talking to peers. And I am currently back at university to become a literate medical statistician (fingers crossed!) to try to improve our understanding of BIND and benzo withdrawal, so this is my happy place.

So my proposal is: I post a reading here once a fortnight on a Wednesday, you then have two weeks to read it for the scheduled one-hour zoom benzo reading group on Tuesday 7:30 London time (2:30 EST). If you can't attend the scheduled group, that's fine. The more the merrier and it may deepen your understanding, but at the very least, you will have a tonne of fascinating readings to do :).

First reading:

Ritvo, A.D., Foster, D.E., Huff, C., Reid Finlayson, A.J., Silvernail, B. and Martin, P.R. (2023) 'Long-term consequences of benzodiazepine-induced neurological dysfunction: A survey', PLoS ONE, 18(6), e0285584. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0285584.

First meeting: 20 October, 2026

Zoom log-in details to follow.

Yours, the Ever Learning Mod

p.s. just so I have an idea of how many people to expect please send me a DM. Cheers

Mod team message WSJ journalists seeking folks with multi-generational benzo/AD use in their families for great new book

Shalini Ramachandran and Betsy McKay (Wall Street Journal reporters who wrote the award-winning Overmedicated America series last year) are working on a book which will examine the making of America's pill-first culture for anxiety and depression. They are looking to talk to people who have experiences to share about benzodiazepines or antidepressants, including those who have had more than one generation of their families on Xanax, Prozac and the like. Part of their research will focus on drug companies, regulators and the medical system, and they are also seeking to talk to clinicians, researchers, government/regulatory officials, and current or former pharmaceutical company executives/workers.

If you'd like to share your story, please fill out this Google form, and they will reach out to contact you.

Note: I had a phone call with Shalini before agreeing to post their request and it’s clear they’re allies working on material that could bring benzos into public discussion in a significant way. Their intent is to make a systemic impact - and personally, I’m pretty excited to see what they produce in the end.

Symptom Question Severe fatigue. Now into 12th day. Just updose and call it okay, for life? Professional I can consult, who could possibly help me and my prescriber understand what's happening and what to do next?

Micro tapering since May 2026. Water taper. .02% each time.

Truly not sure what to do now. Have had all kinds of symptoms of withdrawal from tapering, but severe fatigue for a few days has been common. Especially after the two cuts before this one.

This cut, done 14 days ago, has brought on severe physical fatigue. Today is day 13.

Any physical activity brings on post-exertional fatigue to the point of being bed/comfortable chair bound.

And my stamina is getting worse daily, to the point of finding it difficult to get basic life activities done.

Pretty bad insomnia for the past 2 nights

I need to be physically active for my health.

I've managed to taper from the equivalent of 25 mg of diazepam to 6.4 mg now (had held at 6.5 mg for a couple of years)

Nightly benzos prescribed over 28 years ago.

I'm wondering if anyone here, was was functioning well on a fairly low dose, just decided to hold at that dose, which for me would involve updosing back to 6.5 mg

And just stop. Keep taking around 6.5 mg, for life. I am 72 years old.

For perspective, I was going to a gym at least twice a week, and a warm pool workout swim 1-2 times a week. And walking daily. Before the past 3 cuts.

And walking/hiking alone and with friends.

And is there someone who is experienced with helping people taper who I consult with?

I have a supportive psychiatrist and PCP. I have never experienced tolerance withdrawal (no desire/need/craving for a higher dose for the initial symptoms, which were insomnia and anxiety)

Just don't know what to do. Frightened with this apparently spiraling downwards with physical stamina.

TIA for any help!

Discussion Something incredibly validating that somebody told me yesterday

So I went to an osteopathic practice yesterday in order to relieve some of the tension I've had from the withdrawal, it's basically similar to getting a massage but it's more targeted for acute injuries and other muscoskeletal conditions.

Anyways as she was massaging my upper body and stuff she was telling me that my body was incredibly tight and inflamed, and that she was honestly surprised to see this in somebody who was so young (I'm only 18). We get to talking a little bit and come to know that the majority of her time is spent on super high achievers experiencing burn out, think hedgefund managers and perfectionists studying at elite universities.

These are people who are working 50, 60, sometimes 70+ hour weeks at incredibly demanding jobs who have come in because they have basically worked themselves to a nub and can't function anymore, and she was telling me that my nervous system was MORE stressed than theirs.

She was genuinely surprised that I was looking relatively functional from her POV and that was honestly one of the most validating things I have ever heard in my life, like I almost cried on the spot 😭. This shit IS stressful and just because I've been sat at home not doing anything doesn't mean my system isn't constantly being taxed because it's still stuck in fight or flight mode.

Everything hurts all the time and it's actually easy to forget just how stressed you're feeling in the moment when you've been experiencing it for weeks and weeks on end, it basically becomes the new normal. It took this kind women telling me point blank that my balance was so out of wack that it's comparable to people busting their asses at elite institutions for me to finally understand "Okay, so I'm NOT a crazy person and do deserve some rest".

Don't listen to anybody who thinks otherwise or think you're being overdramatic, they will never understand what this experience does to a person and their body. Just existing is difficult enough so give yourself major props for making it another day!!

Rare Symptoms Is blurry vision called by xanax withdrawal or anxiety

I find when i dont take xanax my vision becomes blurry/spaced out and its hard to focus on things. I dont know if its just the anxiety messing with my vision or a rebound/withdrawal effect?

Needing Support I want to cry, am i in trouble?

I was clean from benzos for 2 months and made it through with only agoraphobia and worse anxiety lingering. I couldnt take it not being able to leave my house any longer and started using again for almost 1 month. I only use 0.25mg once for a few days with some days off. The total times of use was probably roughly 21 days out of 30 (not in a row) with like 9 days of no uses in the period. Could i stop now or am i screwed? I am getting suicidal and angry thinking about withdrawal and i dont want to go through it again.

Helpful Advice Hi I've been on Klonopin for 15 years. I'm currently stuck at 1 mg. I used to take 4 mg a day.

Hi. I guess I'm looking for hope or successful stories. I am so frustrated right now. Like the headline says, I have taken Klonopin for about 15 years. Daily I would take between 2 to 4 mg. I decided to get off of Klonopin about 2 years ago. I tapered down to 1 mg. I still have some rough days with that. But when I try to cope alone 1 mg I start shaking inside and how the usual withdrawal reactions. I'm just starting to wonder if this is ever going to work. I'm tired and I'm scared and I would love to be off of klonopin. I do not have anxiety anymore.

Thank you for listening to the event. I would love to hear some success stories.

Venting Not many friends

Hello all,

Just venting to say I feel shit. I still have a few friends maybe 3 close ones and a bunch of other friends I will keep in touch with but we don't see each other as often, but nothing in comparison to when I was younger and In my early 20s, I had so many mates. I just had a therapy session and my T asked if I have socialised much since our last session and nah I haven't maybe just one friend's birthday. I am 29 and female, have spent the last 4 years coming off of psych meds and benzos and 2 years before then being in a really bad place on a prescribed dose of extremely high benzos and stims etc. It sucks, I don't go to many events or things or feel apart of any groups anymore, Its crazy I have 100% burnt bridges while not being in a good place but also this just sucks, how do we build ourselves up again, it would be so good to have a group of friends I could see weekly like other people do. I don't even know how I got here. I am 15 months out from finishing my benzo taper and healing other things, and not feeling myself yet and still not okay. This all sucks a lot. I hope it turns around; we take not being lonely for granted. I have made an effort to reconnect with a few but maybe I just need to keep on showing up and inviting myself and making the effort. Maybe its just harder in your later 20s early 30s who knows.

EMERGENCY Muscle stiffness and sudden jerking while tapering clonazepam

I’ve tapered my clonazepam from 4 mg to 1 mg daily it took me 1 year, and recently I’ve been experiencing some strange symptoms when i reach to 1 mg. Sometimes, my finger suddenly becomes unresponsive, and I can’t move it for a few seconds. Yesterday, while I was asleep, my whole body suddenly jerked forward, almost like I was startled awake.
I’m also taking Lyrica (pregabalin) 150 mg twice a day.
Has anyone experienced anything similar while tapering clonazepam? Could this be withdrawal-related, or could it be something else? I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Hope 15 months of severe protracted withdrawal and BIND than I found Reiki

It's truly a miracle after just 1 reiki session my bind has been reduced by 95% I was basically curled up all day in a ball before the Reiki session and afterwards I did not think much of the Reiki session other than my pain was reduced like going to a window from a wave. But here is the thing the pain never returned.

This has never happened I have been sick for a decade from parodixical benzo to withdrawal and protracted withdrawal

It goes even further I was addicted to Kratom that I was taking to help with the pain from BIND. After 1 reiki session I am no longer addicted to Kratom no withdrawals I just no longer need it also I am on day 2 of no caffeine without coffee and doing just fine.

I told the person doing my Reiki about my bind and how I got it and that's why I was there. It's truly a miracle and anyone else that's where I was at I really hope you try Reiki and just maybe it will be you instant cure as well.

I can't believe I just got my life back it's a true blessing as just 2 days ago I was sick really sick.

Venting Feeling discouraged

I feel like I've been holding up pretty well for someone who has barely slept for 2 years. Telling myself this BIND will last 3 to 5 yrs. Then I can really start my life. Since June, I've been in a big wave, and now I'm having waves within waves. My sleep is so bad. Paresthesia is now on my arms n whole head, instead of just my forehead. Ocular n now aura migraines multiple times a day. Everything just keeps ramping up. I joined a protracted Facebook group, n I see so many people that r still suffering 7, 9 yrs out. This is discouraging seeing what seems to be people with valid bind symptoms still going through it bad so far out. My head is spinning, trying to figure this crap out. When will my symptoms improve? How long can this last. Do this protracted people have another illness there confusing with bind. Comparing etc its all so exhausting. If I was 50% better, I would be able to challenge myself in life. Start living. I make plans in my head on what I can do to start really living but now I'm starting to really feel like I'm going to have to settle with just really small life improvements n not major ones. It's this freaking sleep. Zero sleep most nights. More often than not, I'm awake 3 days in a row. Seeing so many people in that Facebook group still suffering so bad 7+ yrs out really discouraged me today. Idk it's a lot. I'm really frustrated n feel stuck, losing hope. I check all the boxes for a long recovery. 19 yrs on 8mg klonopin went cold turkey. Poly drug cold turkey of klonopin baclofen clonidine subutex all at once. I'm just feeling negative, I guess. I'm sick of this n not having answers. Thanks for letting me vent.

Supplements What Supplements to complement Benzo tapering…

5 months into my diazepam taper and wondering is there any supplements, vitamins, herbs, natural remedies to help with common withdrawal symptoms and tapering.

To mention a few I’ve come across but have read conflicting information on their efficacy during a benzodiazepine taper are:

l theanine, magnesium glycinate, Hops, chamomile, valerian root, passion flower, vitamin b6, ashwagandha, kava.

These are just what I’ve considered myself mainly for treating the withdrawal symptoms but have heard conflicting reports of how they helped or even in some cases made the symptoms worse.

Just curious as to anyone have a lived tapering experience of taking any supplements?

Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated.

*TRIGGER WARNING* Terror

Did anybody else suffer from a feeling of impending terror, and like their panic attacks were not going to end? Like their brain was completely bent and all of your reality was absolutely distorted? Like you were a prisoner in your own brain? That has been today. I know it ends, but it's really difficult.

Seeking Advice/Tips Withdrawing from 2mg/day of alprazolam

Hey, so Id like to ask for some kind of tips to withdraw from this stuff as fast as possible. I was first prescribed alprazolam about 2 years ago, starting with a dose of 0,5mg and i was only using it when I felt like it, I sometimes didn't take a single pill for several months and I had no withdrawal symptoms. It was until about 2 months ago when I started taking it regularly and sometimes even abusing it by taking 2-3mg a day. It seems that my body has gotten used to 2mg but I've managed to reduce it to 1mg about a week ago to "feel stable" for most of the time altough every day seems to be different, I've tried to split the 1mg into 2 doses in the past 2 days but it seems to make the withdrawal symptoms worse. Ive never felt so bad in my life. It sometimes gets to a point where I feel like im gonna have a heart attack at any moment. I would also like to point out that for some reason, the withdrawal symptoms seem to start about an hour after I wake up and gradually worsen until around 2pm, then they starts to decline and sometimes vanish completely and i start to feel either calm or happy when it gets dark. As if my body has some kind of fixed stress/anxiety routine.

Seeking Advice/Tips Heavy anhedonia (depression perhaps?). Weighing getting on an antidepressant. Anybody totally regretted doing it? or had good results

Hello everyone, currently dealing with heavy anhedonia or perhaps it's a full-blown depression. I'm 16 months off clonazepam and 4 weeks off mirtazapine. Perhaps this is a result of the level of suffering I'm going through but I'm considering perhaps getting on a more traditional antidepressant like prozac or venlafaxine (which I was on 8 year ago). Did anybody here in a similar situation --that is of being in a more protracted withdrawal (BIND/PAWS), had good results or perhaps it made things worse?

A corollary to this is also insomnia. So far I have not taken anything for the 4 hours of bad sleep I've been getting especially the last 3 weeks but I do have trazodone and hydroxyzine but I am unsure whether to resort to taking it for a few days for fear of worsening withdrawal symptoms.

Thanks for any feedback on your personal experience on either an antidepressant or trazodone/hydroxyzine.

Needing Support When does it get better ? Like seriously... 4months off still struggling really bad

Ive been abusing various benzos mainly xanax & bromazepam , I decided to quit 4 months ago cuz I developed really bad tolerance and i needed up to 4mg of xanax in one go just to feel something ...

4 months now and withdrawal are horrible, absolutely Terrible , I have chronic anxiety & stress , hyperarausal & excitability , very poor sleep quality im starting to look like a zombie from the walking dead due to the messed up sleep , burnout , DP/DR , my whole life has become a mess ....

I am being prescribed medications but they barely help AT ALL , how long this suffering will continue ? I have read that it could take up to 1 year or even 2 years before ur brain heals wich scares the hell out of me cuz living just 1 day with these withdrawals feels like forever

Positive sobriety experience Finally got off it.

First time poster big time lurker of this sub while recovering.

Hey guys, hope you all are doing well. I have been using benzos and opiates for almost 7 years recreationally and I finally decided to get off of them after my girlfriend of 11 years kicked me out of the house. I was just spending all my money on drugs and recently it got to the point where I was stealing and lying to get my fix.

I would buy any opiates I could find when they were available and I was taking 3-6mg of Xanax daily until I would run low and then ween myself off to 1mg-.5mg at the end of every month until I could get my next dose. I was stuck in a vicious cycle for a long time going through withdrawals every month and hardly being able to function.

I had to move in with my mom when my girlfriend kicked me out and finally I decided I was done with all drugs. I've been tapering for a little over a month now and I'm happy to report that I'm 2 days sober from everything. Opiates, easy. Weed, easy. Benzos was the hardest most gruelling experience in my life. Towards the end of my taper I was becoming hopeless and thought I'd never be able to get past that hurdle but with each taper (I just listened to my body) it got easier to deal with the withdrawal.

I'm really posting this for anyone who thinks they can't do it. Just keep trying. I had a few weeks where I was just wanting to take a normal dose and say screw it but I stuck to it and told myself I'll never touch these things again. I have access to them right now but I don't even feel the urge to use them anymore. I don't want to undo what I've worked so hard to achieve.

I'm finally realizing how bad off I really was. How much of life I missed, how many people I hurt during my time using. It's a big weight off of me and I'm free from the grip of these stupid drugs. I'm so proud of myself for sticking to my schedule and doing what I said I would without much help. Thank God for my mother, she got me through the worst days of my withdrawals. Keeping me busy around the house and just being supportive of my lifestyle change. I still have a lot of work to do with my finances and building my relationship back up with my girlfriend. I can't believe how much of life I threw away but I'm so glad that I realized this before I let life pass me by. I still have so much to do on this planet and I really feel like I can achieve my goals and dreams now. If you are trying to quit right now. Just know that it's totally worth it and sober life isn't as bad as I thought it would be. My dreams are crazy, my sleep schedule is still patchy but things are getting better every day. I'm ready to actually live again and I'm grateful for all of your stories here because they helped me through the worst parts of my recovery.
