Discussion My No. 8 favorite 'mech: the Hussar HSR-200Db

Post image

Or as I like to call it, the "Murder Booper"

It runs up, pops you in the guts from range with that nasty ER Large Laser, and runs away before you can wipe the floor with its tissue-paper armor.

Did any survive into the 31st Century?

Com star had a ton of them, and they gave some downgraded models to the draconis combine the war of 3039.

I meant specifically the 200Db model only built at the height of the Star League

There's no specific information regarding the 200-Db's numbers. I would expect them to be exceedingly rare since the majority of Hussars are called out as being 200-Ds that served with the mainline SLDF and, most of that stock is identified as having gone out with Operation Exodus.

Presumably, the Hussars ComStar had mothballed prior to 3039 were stock 200-Ds mostly otherwise they would not have been likely to sacrifice the Chassis in a Downgrade by giving the 300-D to the Draconis Combine since that would limit their own ability to maintain any Royal Hussars they had in stock.

Bonn Mekarmorwerks is located on Terra and, remained under Com Star's control. Had there been significant numbers of Royal Hussars out there it stands to reason that, the Com Guards would have fielded those and done everything in their power to maintain that production line. Instead, Com Guards are identified as having been known to use Stock 200-Ds.

So overall, I'd say IRL there's maybe 100 Royal Hussars scattered throughout the IS. Could be 10 though or, there could be 1000 it's anyone's guess. They are however very rare.

You can always assume there's a couple of Royal Hussars hiding in some as-yet undiscovered depot somewhere in the IS šŸ˜Ž. Maybe also some in a Brian Cache in the Clan homeworlds.

It’s a really smart, useful mech that unfortunately struggles because it fills a role that is hard to make fun (long range reconnaissance and potential harassment). I love the little arms though, like it’s going to throw things or grab and steal stuff instead of just sabotaging it

And now I imagine a giggling pirate Hussar running around the battlefield, rubbing his little hands together with manic glee going "mine, mine, mine . . ."

There are a lot units that are useful and fun to play as long as you are willing to design a ā€œhistorical reenactmentā€ scenario around them rather than trying to play a ā€œbalancedā€ competitive style game.

Realistically if I want the hassle of fielding a Light Mech with a Large Laser and, the liability of maintaining Royal SDLF equipment I'm going to bring either a Spector-4F with Chameleon Light Polarization and Null-Signature Systems or a Thorn-Nb with MASC.

The Hussar carries a 2.7 million Cbill Price Tag compared to the Thorn's 1.6 or the Spector's 6.5. It just sits in a super weird place overall for a single ER Large Laser to move around at 151kph without being able to engage infantry.

Frankly, for the same price tag you can get a Royal Hermes with a Beagle Active Probe.

Hell, just give me a Mercury. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the Hussar isn't even in my top 10 favorite light royals. 🫤

If there's one thing I'd like to see in the next generation of video games is more dynamic movement of mechs, like we can see in this picture. Arms/weapons shouldn't be stuck in one position and mechs should be able to bob and weave somewhat. Goodness knows how they'd pull it off though.

Probably have to design it like an FPS instead of a tank simulator, which probably wouldn't go over well, even if it's more lore accurate.

The ability to crouch. Sprinting. Reticle bloom that is affected by the pace and mode of movement. I'd give all mechs a little jump/dash ability too, a quick little up and in whichever direction lurch that can either clear very low obstacles or throw off enemy targeting for a split second. Vectored jump jets in both MW5 games are pretty good, I'd keep those as-is.

I think heavy gear did it but those mechs were more like battle armor.

I mean... VR but the controller/console is a neurohelmet.

If I know mech fans you could probably raise a billion dollars on that kickstarter

They're like chickens. Stupid, annoying little 'mechs you really don't want pissed off and coming after you.

The Royal disappeared during the Jihad, the -200-B & -400-B both were the last Hussars in general use and disappeared during the Late Republic Era. theoretically 3130 at the latest, afterwords no faction has any appreciable amounts remaining.

That is way cooler than any of the official art

The -500D is an absolute menace as a C3I spotter.

Literally every time I've encountered one in megamek its eaten a hit somehwere and then when check the combat log I have a moment of "wait that was a mech kill?"

Unfortunately, looks like the last production date was 3070 on Coventry, so you can blame the Wobbies for it disappearing.

I love its dorky little pangolin arms!Ā

It's like a mini marauder with hands I love it

3

u/rrenda 9h ago

This was my first impression of the hussar as well, an itty bitty baby marauder

Hasvanyone ever tried building one with a Partial Wing? Or is that a bad idea.

(Let's see who gets why I want this)

Hussar is a favourite mech of mine, I have commissioned a retro-looking model (look at Cults3D), printed a whole army and have a bunch of stories like one of those had knocked the fully intact Berserker pilot unconscious with a fist bump.

It is also immensely fun to look at your opponent's expression when a squad of magnetic BA rides on top of one, while using their ECM suit to generate ghost targets, essentially rising Hussar's TMM to +5.

I've gotten one in Battletech Extended Tactics. Originally just grabbed it cause Comstar mech but it's surpringly solid for what it is

The Wobbie -900D is one of the best chargebot record sheets in the game. Table it with 3 Piloting or better and start smashing into your enemies

Holy shit, you made the Hussar look cool.

Despite the reputation for fragility, the Royal variant and the later WoB ones are pretty durable.

They look great and unique too-hovercraft on legs with little T-Rex arms and a marauder-style back mounted cannon? It's got an effective visual design that instantly tells you what the mech is about. If/When CGL redoes this one I hope the unique aspects of it's appearance translate well.
