That's the kind of fever dream FrankenMechs run on.
You take take two wrecks, solder them together and liberaly add duct tape. Then you connect the engine, which can be any engine you like, and turn it on.
If it doesn't explode, congratulations, you just created a new FrankenMech!

Is that 1 medium and 5 small lasers? Trades single point impact and 3 dmg alpha vs an r-60L in return for no ammo bomb and grippers to help grab enemy tanks or assist with construction as practice during peacetime? Could fit enough sinks to alpha on a jump heat neutral and still uparmor even after arm weight I bet, with how light the weapon load would be compared to ac20.
17
u/Primary-Latter 4d ago
On the one hand, yes. On the other (assuming I didn't just miss something about the power plant) you now have a 2/3/2 platform that can do a whopping five (5) damage past three hexes and that'n only goes out to nine. Admittedly the point-blank light show could threaten a really funny PSR, so there's that.
21
u/bisondisk 4d ago
Look if it’s not dogshit in some way it’s not an urbanmech. And it’d probably be even cheaper bv wise, if some1 has the math. Besides with helm core those can all become ER lasers powered by 10 dhs, freeing up another ton or two of formerly heatsink tonnage to up a couple smalls to mediums.

u/BigStompyMechs LittleMeepMeepMechs 3d ago edited 3d ago
Counterpoint; for light garrison duty or police duty, having arms and lasers that can run at half-power for welding/cutting/scrapping duty isn't a terrible idea. The cost in C-bills is within the same range of several other Industrial Mechs.
An UrbanMech is already straddling the BattleMech/IndustrialMech line, so why not just lean into it?
I'm picturing an Inspector Gadget build, one finger is Jaws of Life, one finger is an industrial grinder, etc.
Sure, it's slow, but 20 tons is close enough to a bulldozer or backhoe's weight. Just cart it around on a trailer.

I hope it can still do a full torso twist so that instead of punching the enemy, it will hold its arms out and then spin 360 really fast to pummel the enemy with a spinning double fist attack.

u/Malkryst 4d ago edited 4d ago
Can we have this at Assault weight, with 5 small lasers, as a modern replacement for the Charger 1A1? Oh and as many jump-jets as we can fit on it and maybe some kind of powered fist to enhance punching.
We can call it the Hooligan, the Mugger, or maybe the Urbanthug. Or put a hoodie on it and call it the Urbanchav.

Honestly I see it more as a battle armor suit. That said, this is still a better use of Commando parts than putting it on a Commando mech. Most useless mech ever. At least with a Stinger and Wasp you know you are getting junk.

u/Torvir159 3d ago
Commando is just a poor man's Javelin. The little guy's grown on me
6
u/Nobodyinpartic3 3d ago
The little guy has died on me more times I care to count. It can barely handle a Shadow Hawk
3
u/why_ya_running 3d ago
That depends on the model because there are some that a Shadow Hawk cannot handle them like the following
COM-7T blazing inferno II it has 4x ER ML 5x ER SL 1x SL 11 DHS Triple-Strength Myomer
COM-9S it has 2x MML/3 1x light PPC 2x SRM/2
COM-4H it has 2x ML 6x RL/15

u/HamsterOnLegs 3d ago
I’m planning on using one simply as a distraction mech to “back up” my Griffin. I can’t wait until it slides and trips trying to get into the rear arc or an enemy mech.

u/Individual_Buy4305 3d ago
That's an interesting idea. The Canopians got a lot of Urbies from the CC during their alliance. Like the Marauder battle armor, the new battle armor was constructed with the idea of giving the armor of an Urbie with the arms of a Commando, captured during the taking of most of the Draconis March. This Battle Armor is a Brawler/Space specialist unit that works on taking over dropships and jumpships. On planet, it is considered slow for its size, but is deadly in a city setting especially to infantry units. The unit can punch other Battle Armor units, which looks like a child throwing a fit. During testing, an elderly Liao family member saw it and said it reminded them of Romano Liao and the stories of her. So the Battle Armor's name is the Romano.

u/why_ya_running 3d ago
No offense but if you're using a stinger or wasp in combat things have either gone horribly wrong or you're an imbecile.... They are by definition recon units they're not supposed to fight unless they absolutely have to.
Commando on the other hand actually punches up from its weight even the base loadout of 1x SRM/6, 1x SRM/4 and 1x ML is more than enough to terrorize mediums and heavies (and the fact that 97 kph is still good enough to make it difficult to hit)
3
u/Nobodyinpartic3 3d ago
You say that like it won't get hit by said medium and heavies. I have never seen a Commando do well in person. It's just too slow for It's job. The Jenner does it better
1
u/why_ya_running 3d ago
Ton for ton the Commando hits harder (it's 10 tons lighter than a Jenner yet it carries a better weapon loadout) the Jenner also has a problem of overheating too much.
Also you need to remember that each chassis has a very specific job and that's what they're good at (the Jenner is a cavalry/guerrilla warfare style mech)
The Commando is a infantry support/harasser style mech
So no the Jenner does not do the commandos job better since it can only do one part of it well.
And lets not forget that it's not just speed its size... A Commando is fast plus small means it's far harder to hit than a Jenner.
And just because you have never seen something doesn't mean what you have seen is right (on table top I have one shotted atlases with a Commando...in MW5 again I have taken out atlases with a Commando....MWO I have taken out atlases with a Commando (so just because you can't make use of it or haven't seen anybody make use of it right does not mean anything)
1
u/Dead_Kraggon MechWarrior being barbequed by a Firestarter 3d ago
I'm not calling you a liar, or detracting from your argument, I'm just curious how you're one-shotting an atlas with a commando. Shots to the CT from behind?
2
u/why_ya_running 3d ago
Yes center torso from the rear (table top I like to use the Commando 4H and 7T)(MWO I build similar to the 7T)(MW5 with YAML I run my Commando similar to the 4H)
2
1
u/dabigchina 3d ago
the commando is the perfect unit for ai enemy. terrible unit for the player.
its job in mw5 is to run up and dump as many srms as possible before it dies. it can usually get a few rounds in and annoy the fuck out of me before it dies. it's basically a suicide mission.

2
u/Nobodyinpartic3 3d ago
Also, like I said, at least with a Stinger or Wasp you know getting junk. The Commando gives the illusion of being a fighter when it is not.

Yeah, but that'll make it slightly more expensive/difficult to repair, which defeats its purpose in the first place.
Next, you'll try slapping arms on a Hornet!

This is the sort of mech I imagined a plucky, but desperate young tech cobbling together from battlefield salvage in order to join the ranks of mechwarriors.
My dream had them using a Javelin or Valkyrie, however, because the weights line up better and wouldn’t look quite so awesome.
I also imagine giving a Vulcan some hands.
1
u/Toa_Malafe 3d ago
Legend has it that the Urban Commando's bloodline continued for many centuries, Changing from the machine of a warrior to that of a teacher. This is a joke, but the art OP posted slapped and reminded me way too much of the Demi Trainer to not make some sort of joke (and "we have demi trainer at home" was a tad too mean spirited IMO)

1
u/Wurzzmeka 3d ago
It looks good enough that, had I been a new player, I would have though this was its own mech. Heck, almost did at first.
Giving the Urban a better power plant and replacing the srms with medium lasers, I could easily see this as being a decent multi purpose mech from militia to construction.
Heck, now I am imagining omni Agromechs. A baseline chassis able to swap arms and equipment to fill all sorts of needs. Would knock down repair time and ease logistic trains.

omni Agromechs
somewhere, a John Deere executive wakes up in a cold sweat
1
u/mister_monque 2d ago
Imagine the clans response to John Deere's feelings about right to repair. I'm picturing an invasion corridor leading directly to Moline and an all frequencies broadcast advising the houses amd ComStar that they'd best stay out of this, they'll be about their business once the matter is concluded.
This of course leads my brain to a whole world of agricultural and industrial mechs from Cat, Komatsu, Case, JCB, Euclid, EMD... imagine the most most cutthroat mechwarrior release to date: "Mechwarrior: Industrial Mech Sales & Service" where you get to tell the client that because they didn't use approved parts, the warranty is void and the replacement parts are on Inner Sphere Backorder...

An Urbie with hands just feels wrong.
Coincidentally, it also gets my Transformers neurons activated. Like the Urbie would be the central body/head of a combiner with the limbs being composed of Elementals. URBANICUS!
