Hell yeah brother, this is what it’s about

I have precious little time to enjoy my plastic tanks and I sure as hell won’t spend it getting sweaty or butthurt

16

u/Different_Leave4107 16d ago

I find the sweatiness happens anyway

13

u/Taihou_ 16d ago

Sweatiness can be fun. Friendly competition makes things just that much more engaging. Provided everyone stays respectful of course.

Insufficient air circulation in the game store.

I ran a Centurion, a Trebuchet, A shadowhawk and a phoenix hawk against a victor, a hunchback and a pair of locusts.

It was glorious chaos. He focused on my centurion and it did what they all do: Soldiered on, took a beating, and the rest of the lance obliterated a victor and a locust in the time it took him to blow the shield arm off the Centurion.

We called it a draw because it was, legit, 3 hours of The Centurion Will Not Die show.
There was nothing but friendly trash talking, beer and pretzels, howls of frustrated laughter at the dice and shenanigans. It Was the Best Game I've Played in Years.

u/Paulus_cz 16d ago

So second turn Javelin pops up right behind my Thunderbolt, shoots its leg off, then Charger runs up to it and pushes it off a cliff. Third turn same Javelin jumps to a Sharpshooter (which was supposed to watch said Thunderbolts back), except in such a unfortunate position that said Sharpshooter runs up a level and kicks it's head clean off.
Best game I had so far.

10

u/lordatamus 16d ago

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

3

u/Paulus_cz 16d ago

Totally, also, that ripped off leg, what was ungodly pair of throws, SRMs trough leg armor right into perfect crits. I would not have believed it if I was not on the receiving end watching it happen.

5

u/lordatamus 15d ago

Games like that are just pure shenanigans and they're the best. 'we're super hardened serious stompy robots' in lore, on table top? You can hear the benny hill theme going on as your mechs behave like drunk toddlers.

5

u/DM_Voice 15d ago

Just had a game where a Trebuchet simply would not die. It ended the game with one torso, two legs, and a head. And a single point of structure in the center torso. The head was the only location with armor left. Front or back.

4

u/lordatamus 15d ago

Some mechs, regardless of design, somehow seem to be glorious deathtraps or unkillable zombies. I swear by the CN9-AL. It's my glorious zombie mech. I've had it turn into a stick a few times and still soldier on with just the paired (Both forward facing) ML's left shambling after it's next target while the other pilots get weirdly lucky - Had a hilarious Duel with my SLDF Black Knight Vs. a Stalker - I landed a TAC on the stalkers gyro first round with the PPC and dropped it instantly. Stalker dealt more damage to itself trying to get up and failing, than Lady Luck did with that PPC shot. In lore the fight ended with it's foot on the canopy and the stalker pilot surrendering. On the tabletop it never even moved a single step the whole game.

3

u/DM_Voice 15d ago

The Treb took 2 crits the entire game. Both of the non-ammo slots in the right torso the round it was destroyed. 2 normal crits for the damage (from two shots), and no location destroyed crit that would have given another chance at the ammo.

Hot take: using good mechs isn't inherently bad.

That said, bringing exclusively pulse jumpers to a friendly game might mean you won't have someone to play with next time.

50

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

The only problem with pulse jumpers is that, under BV 2.0, they're undercosted.

Instead of BV2, I think a draft style of play makes more sense to me. You RNG a pool of mechs and then everyone bids on them.

You could come up with a word for the bidding process. Something like... I dunno.... a battle challenge? A batchall?

27

u/tenshimaru 16d ago

Personally, I want to be able to show up and play a game, and BV2 is a good enough system as long as you're not looking to break it.

6

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

Most of my favorite mechs are overcosted in BV2, so yes I'm mad.

6

u/Tricky_Big_8774 16d ago

Me and my Dire Wolf C with 2/2 pilot.

4

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

Is the C-Bill element only really used in campaigns?

11

u/Top-Session-3131 16d ago

As far as I'm aware? Yes. There's some really gawddayum prohibitively expensive metal in the roster when you're using C-Bills as your force building limitation. You can literally bring an entire Company of stealth armored Stingers or most of an Elemental Binary for the price tag of a single Dire Wolf. And they would eat that Dire Wolf alive.

Battle Value 2.0 might have its issues, but it is significantly simpler to use and generally stops shenanigans like that from happening.

14

u/Loganp812 16d ago

Well bargained and done.

10

u/deusorum For the Reach! 16d ago

We did a mission like this once, but each player had a pool of c-bills and we snake drafted to get to hire Mercenaries (hence the c-bills). It was pretty dang awesome.

2

u/d3jake 16d ago

At this year's KSAGG ( https://tabletop.events/conventions/ksagg-vii ) there is a Classic draft event that a local is running. The mechs and variants are specifically chosen by the GM, but you can only run those.

2

u/Vorpalp8ntball 15d ago

How do you work this?

RNG the pool, I can get.

But what do the players bid for the mechs?

Is the entire pool known to the players before bidding starts, or is each mech revealed as the bidding starts for it?

3

u/silasmousehold 15d ago

I've never actually done it! But I'd try something like this:

  1. Create a list of mechs to be auctioned.
  2. Add up the BV of all mechs on the list and divide it between everyone bidding. That makes it so that you can use BV as a yardstick for about much you should bid. If a mech is over- or under-costed you can adjust your bid accordingly.
  3. Order the mechs for auction (maybe in ascending BV order) or select the next one randomly.
  4. Players bid on the mech. Two options:

Option A: bid openly until no one is willing to bid higher

Option B: blind bid; highest bidder wins BUT---this is important---the highest bidder only pays as much as the 2nd place bidder. (This makes it a bad idea to bid really low because you risk giving the mech away to someone who put up a more honest bid.)

  1. Bid until all mechs are sold.

Now here's the honest reason I've never done this: I suspect this won't produce very good games if you have a very small pool. (More honest reason: I don't have anyone to play with anyway!)

If it's just 2 players going to bid on the 8 mechs in the Game of Armored Combat box... yeaaaaah, there's just really only a couple of ways to get a good 4v4 out of that so you're better off eyeballing it.

To make this work I think you'd need a lot of players and a fairly large pool of mechs. You'd probably want to bid on multiple mechs at a time just so it doesn't take all day to draft. If you expect each player to field 4 mechs, then I'd bid on 4 at a time.

2

u/Vorpalp8ntball 15d ago

It's an interesting idea, that why I asked.

I only play with my son, and I have nearly 200 mechs (lots of duplicates).

The entire pool is known to all players?

Paying the the 2nd highest bid fixes one potential problem I was thinking of.

How would you handle ties if 2 players bid the same doing blind bidding? Go to open bidding? Roll off?

2

u/silasmousehold 15d ago edited 15d ago

I researched actual auctioning methods a while ago and there are a lot of interesting ones out there! They all solve different issues.

Blind bids can go multiple rounds in the unlikely event there is a tie.

(Japanese auctions were interesting: there is a price that slowly climbs and you leave the room if you’re no longer willing to pay that price. Last one left gets it!)

u/No_Mud_5999 16d ago

Bring me

12

u/Economy_Emphasis1100 16d ago

This is exactly what makes me wonder "what is the in-universe justification for humanoid mechs? Shouldn't every mech just be legs, a 'BIG F-OFF GUN' platform, and armor plates until it creaks?"

15

u/No_Mud_5999 16d ago

Karate chops, and grabbing whole shipping containers and running off with them.

14

u/iPanzershrec certified mckenna-class battleship 16d ago

my brain just flashed me with the raw image of a charger 1a1 sprinting into a dropship and running out carrying a shipping container while being chased by a full lance of assaults

8

u/Economy_Emphasis1100 16d ago

Sorry, why shouldn't every mech just be legs, a 'BIG F-OFF GUN' platform, a claw-machine claw, a spring-loaded boxing glove, and armor plates until it creaks?

2

u/No_Mud_5999 16d ago

Can't do push ups.

7

u/Economy_Emphasis1100 16d ago

I know a LOT of humanoid things that cant do pushups, me included

2

u/No_Mud_5999 16d ago

Can't do the running man, either.

2

u/Economy_Emphasis1100 16d ago

Darn, you got me there. Any mech worth its C-Bills can do the running man.

Time to scrap my Urbie, and my Jenner, and my Locust, and my Flea, and my Blackjack, and my Stalker, and...

7

u/d3jake 16d ago

I don't know why now this is striking me, but: the proportions on the Yeoman are really confusing. The Catapult has a variant with LRM20 racks, but the legs are far smaller, and the torsos are much larger as well. This makes me think the Yeoman's missile racks are huge.

4

u/No_Mud_5999 16d ago

Yeoman does everything in a very Yeoman way.

2

u/d3jake 15d ago

Truth.

4

u/Cykeisme 16d ago

Hmm... or the Yeoman is tiny?

4

u/d3jake 15d ago

I love the idea of the equivalent of a gonk bot trundling along side of much larger Mechs, carting LRMs around. Like a vicious terrier.

5

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

I really need to get one of those glorious bastards

9

u/G_Morgan 16d ago

This is always the way. I only paint my mechs but I play MTG Commander and I enjoy my opponents wrecking face just as much as me doing it. Sometimes you have to be in it for the love of the game.

You can play to win and still laugh out loud when crazy shit happens

8

u/arbyD 16d ago

I only played casual commander for this reason... But it was ruined a few times by a smug guy obliterating everyone on casual night with some uber deck and then complaining that prizes were bad on casual night. Like dude, it's casual night. The prize is getting to play your jank deck!

11

u/G_Morgan 16d ago

Commander should not have prizes for this reason IMO. While an entire game mode is based upon a social contract to maintain power brackets having a competitive output is a mistake

8

u/arbyD 16d ago

They had a separate night for competitive mode where you brought the absolute best you could.

Casual night prizes were like a single card from a binder that was $2 or less or something like that.

3

u/VicisSubsisto LucreWarrior 15d ago

Casual night prizes should be participation prizes to help everyone justify the ticket cost, and maybe something like voted-on prizes for best/worst/funniest decks.

3

u/G_Morgan 15d ago

FNM already give you a free play booster pack for an official event if you register with the companion app.

2

u/VicisSubsisto LucreWarrior 15d ago

Yeah, like that!

5

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

I played MTG way back in the day and the introduction of net decks when buying individual cards became very easy quickly sucked the fun out of it all I found.

3

u/G_Morgan 16d ago

I'll be honest Standard is awful. I like Commander because I can pick a Commander, sit down with Scryfall and plan out a deck. Games don't end by turn 3 either.

2

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

At that time, Standard was anyone really played seriously. Commander (and others) were around but weren't popular - I was kind of surprised when I'd stopped following it a while and noticed that Commander seemed to have become the standard, though! Out of all the alternative formats it was probably one of my least favorites.

5

u/arbyD 15d ago

I liked playing some pauper at a somewhat nearby store. The meta there wasn't strictly following netdecks - people clearly were inspired by them but didn't follow them super closely. I got 1-4th (event ran out of time so everyone in that 1-4 slot just shared prizes and called it a night) with a super janky white heroic deck. I know it could have been optimized more but I liked doing my own spin. My buddy did the same with infect. It was decent at the time but he didn't follow an optimized list either - it was pretty jank but fun.

That fun faded within 2-3 months and it became netdeck central, then imploded because a lot of people quit playing pauper there. It was tragic.

3

u/GlassjawXVIII Clan Blood Eagle 16d ago

I play the cards I like, not what’s good. You can’t take my leery fogbeast away from me

3

u/G_Morgan 16d ago

I'm not even sure the scenario in which you'd play that card. Isn't this a card that purely benefits your opponent?

https://scryfall.com/card/ons/273/leery-fogbeast

2

u/VicisSubsisto LucreWarrior 15d ago

There are some cards which let you transfer creatures to an opponent, maybe some sort of combo strategy?

2

u/G_Morgan 15d ago

Sure but the opponent doesn't have to attack with it. Unless you goad it as well

2

u/VicisSubsisto LucreWarrior 15d ago

Yeah, it would have to be an extensive combo. Which is why it's not considered "good".

2

u/GlassjawXVIII Clan Blood Eagle 15d ago

It works well with cards that give you “on attack” triggers that are not necessarily about combat damage so it’s a way of getting those without losing your creatures. Your opponent has to choose between taking/trading damage and letting you get triggers, or just letting you get triggers.

u/AnInfiniteAmount 16d ago

I run my shadowhawk and if it gets hit in the gyro and spends the rest of the track breakdancing in the mud, I still have fun

Competitive is the worst way to play battletech

8

"Because my merc outfit barely gets by and I need redundant spotters."

...

...

"Anyways, that'll be 90LRMs indirect because GOD I gotta dump this shit before you get to the longbow archer tag team."

7

u/Uncle__Touchy1987 16d ago

Something 40K idiots can never grasp.

(I’m a 40K idiot too it’s a joke)

7

u/wetstapler 16d ago

This is literally taken from a 40k community, that's why it says tanks not Mechs.

As someone who has only played BT though it still feels as relevant as ever. Every table I show up to has someone who completely dominates the board and doesn't shut up about their perfect list.

Idk how it compares to the 40k community, but at least my local BT scene feels bloated with hyper competitive players.

5

u/MithrilCoyote 15d ago

40K is overrun with hyper competitive types. And GW's policies towards the game's releases, rules styles, and play formats pander almost exclusively to these players.

3

u/Important_Stuff_3919 15d ago

No, it's not just 40k thing, it's also a video game thing.

If you've ever played MWO, you'll notice that its balance is actually rather K-shaped with cheese spammers farming the living crap out of anyone that doesn't run likewise or play like them and the competitive community (which has a council deciding on balance decisions) unironically defends it.

17

u/Snowbird109 16d ago

The only way to play in my mind. A big reason that my local group keeps me coming back to BT is because we’re not playing competitively at all (compared to the other gaming groups at my LGS).

23

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

List building in my 1980s giant stompy robot game? NEVER.

I recently returned to Battletech after a long hiatus, and I love everything all over again, but I can't tell you how much it vexes me that list building has become a thing.

22

u/tenshimaru 16d ago

List restrictions are just a way to agree with your opponent on what to play. If you come up with other ways to agree on a game that's awesome, but putting together a lance is "list building" to some degree.

18

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

For me, Battletech was always "you go to war with the mechs you have, not the mechs you want." That means treating it more like an RPG. Just playing a single, disconnected, cost-optimized game doesn't do it for me.

4

u/VicisSubsisto LucreWarrior 15d ago

I (and many others) agree with you, purely as a matter of taste. The problem with that is that setting up a campaign like that is logistically difficult, especially outside of MegaMek.

To twist your phrase, list building is "you play the game you have time to play, not the game you wish you could".

11

u/RTalons 16d ago

My lists tend to take on themes, like all TSM w/axes or look mom no hand(actuator)s or Moar Dakka (everyone has RACs)

Being effective is usually independent of theme.

3

u/__Geg__ 16d ago

It's not just list restrictions. There are on and on going discussions on Goonhammer and many Discords about the highest efficiency units to take at different BVs and restrictions.

5

u/Downrightskorney 16d ago

Hot take but listbuilding with the new force manuals has ruined other games for me. So much flavour gets infused into so many of the commands I can't help but build in a very lore appropriate way. The Lance's really feel like they belong to that sub command.

3

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

Are there actual army books that inform different formations? I'm really just starting to get into the actual mechanics but all I'm aware of is availability charts for mechs.

3

u/Downrightskorney 16d ago

So they are releasing them currently. Not every faction has them and they are era specific. Currently house Davion/ the federated suns, house kurita/ the draconis combine and Mercs have a force manual. They are effectively army books from other games. Right now they also only cover the succession wars and the clan invasion eras. Nothing past that.

2

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

Cheers; I knew new things were coming with the new edition but I did not follow closely. I'm curious how the Merc book looks - I decided to stay straight merc just so I can sort of take whatever mech / tank / infantry unit seemed appealing at the time, hah.

2

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

I like the force manuals but it's not fair they didn't give us Capellans one. We're objectively the best faction!

4

u/Downrightskorney 16d ago

They will likely get around to it eventually. Choosing kurita, Davion and Mercs off the rip makes sense. Both house books feature the war of 3039. My big gripe is that they don't go past the clan invasion when we just got pretty new sculpts of mechs that aren't a thing until well last that the new rokurokubi looks great I want to play it in a house list

4

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. 16d ago

Did you guys just grab whatever back in the day? How'd you not end up with a guy fighting 10K bv vs a guy with like 4k?

10

u/TheOtherOtherViper Clan Magical Liopleurodon 16d ago

Prior to the clan invasion pick up games typically balanced by tonnage. Which had it's own problems that everyone pretends to forget.

Most long term groups played by making up scenarios and using the RATs to assign forces (or agreeing on a distribution if you had a limited pool of minis) that were generally uneven/randomized or that 'fit' the scenario. This was the norm for wargames back in the day; war isn't 'balanced' and consequently balance was never the goal of wargames. But competitive tournaments also weren't the norm. 'Tournaments' back in the day were more like a LAN party; a large social activity usually without overarching competitive hierarchies. If matches were organized, it was usually playing through a handful fixed scenarios with predetermined units rather than each player playing their own army that they picked for themselves.

TL;DR: it's a lot of grognards gnashing their teeth and tearing their garments over the mere existence of play formats that in no way interfere with the last 40 years of kitchen table or scenario-based battletech that those grognards were only going to play anyway

6

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

This thread is not teeth gnashing. It is shouting into the void. There's a clear difference!

5

u/TheOtherOtherViper Clan Magical Liopleurodon 16d ago

To be clear, I'm a kitchen table player too. Nothing about that playstyle is going anywhere. People keep claiming that CGL is trying to erase the history of the game but they're also the ones keeping IWM afloat and releasing pdfs of all the original manuals that are crumbling to dust on our bookshelves. There's nothing preventing anyone from playing Battletech circa 1989.

CGL is far from perfect, but it's pretty clear that they're doing their best to keep the game as broadly accessible as possible. All the people who act like the sky is falling just because UACs don't jam in the new book are getting extremely tiresome...

3

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

We treated Battletech more like D&D 2nd Edition so.... that never happened.

3

u/Cykeisme 16d ago

Play it by ear for balance.

Also, more silly objectives like one side needing to escape through a specific section of mapsheet edge, or destroy some buildings, or destroy several buildings and then escape. Or get to a DropShip. Or escort/destroy a convoy. Or whatever.

And then balance the two sides by ear, taking into account which side has the harder objective.

If it turns out that it was too hard/too easy for one of the sides, just take that into account next time, I guess.

The real question here is how to balance it to be fair, because the winner deserves satisfaction and bragging rights for winning a game based on balanced  rules.  The answer is, no one cared :p

4

u/Xrest_the_Aether 16d ago

Here I thought list building was like telling everyone your dream car or showing off what you can play with

9

u/silasmousehold 16d ago

When I think of "list building" I think of min/maxing a force to fit within a BV/PV budget, which... eh. That doesn't feel fun to me. Every "bad mech" post you see around here only exists because it's over costed by the BV/PV formula. Change the formula around and suddenly the best mechs could become the worst mechs.

4

u/RTalons 16d ago

Charger 1a1 approves.

5

u/Electronic-Ideal2955 16d ago

I don't fully min max, but in alpha strike there are abilities that 'do nothing' in a lot of game modes, so I tent to list build such that I have material that engages with the scenario and as little investment into nothing as possible.

And I do this because it really is a big deal. I played a game where my opponent just grabbed some stuff and skilled it to reach PV and it was such a slaughter it wasn't even fun. When I evaluated his list after the game something like 1/3 of his points were invested into things he didn't/couldn't use.

6

u/Vegalyp 16d ago

I regularly bring a lance of Blackjacks and have one of my pilots named Drinky Swill McShitfacington and you bet he's never survived a match

And while I rarely win, I have broken every opponent because the moment I ask straight-faced "How could you kill Drinky Swill McShitfacington?" I do an amount of psychic damage that breaks their composure and makes the turn last longer while they recover from laughter.

5

u/LonePaladin 16d ago

I was once watching a mixed-unit campaign being set up at my FLGS. One player was asked the name of his tank's driver, his answer was "Rex Carsalot".

I wanted to drop everything and join in right then, but I had a Rolemaster game needing me.

6

u/UseSteaksForVampires 16d ago

Hash tag Urbie with bigger gun is best Urbie.

5

u/Manchlenk 16d ago edited 15d ago

My general rule of thumb for force construction is: 2 mechs/variants that I know and love 1 mech that I know, but a new variant 1 brand new mech I don't know well.

It keeps things fresh, and stops me from slowly optimizing into a min maxed list.

3

u/skarnws 16d ago

Same, my force always starts with a Rifleman and Bushy(if era allows, we play a bit of pre-invasion in my area) or Battlemaster, the other 2 will generally be whatever is in my collection and that I havent played with in a while

5

u/Abject_Internal8105 16d ago edited 16d ago

I ran a charity event two years in a row at my local gaming store.

Every year we had multiple sweats and tryhards trying to find ways to minmax their forces using the scenario pack I wrote.

Our local notorious Sweat wanted to run Precision AC20 ammo for his entire force.  I literally had to get in touch with Xotl to go over my charity scenario pack and he made an on-the-spot rule just to negate this level of sweatiness.

It has turned me off to my local community for the most part.

It kills the enjoyment of BT when people find every exception or loop hole to minmax, swap out their forces when you reveal your force.  Or simply forgot to tell you they're bringing new tech/gear until Turn 1 and then share the rules during the match.

To combat this I always run new mechs and variants (lore/faction specific and not OP as a challenge for myself) and unfortunately need to be selective on whom I choose to play.

7

u/MithrilCoyote 15d ago

One reason why pre-fab thematic forces are a good idea for non-tournament events.

1

u/Abject_Internal8105 15d ago

facepalm.

You utterly miss the point.

If a Sweat is so clueless that they can't see the good in a charity event.  Especially for PTSD veterans on June 6th AND the main rule Developer for Battletech has to purposely write a specific rule just to combat Minmaxing Sweats.

You comment is so moot and utterly off topic.

3

u/Rise_Crafty 15d ago

Somehow Battletech has landed, after all of it's years in various stages of popularity and obscurity, in seemingly the perfect place, where the community is passionate about the game, can argue about the most minor differences in mechs and why it makes them better than another, but then at the end of the day, not take anything too seriously. It really is good.

I always play Rule of Cool, where sound tactical decisions get DFA'd because it sounds cooler.

An interesting correlary to the Rule of Cool is that the heat curve on a given mech is often directly proportional to how cool a given action is.

I have chaotic mind set on every games, I want to do it best on my ability, I want to do lore shit and fool around.

Min max is boring but I like my heat optimal laser beds, good armored and armed brawlers, funny special ammos to auto cannons to snipers etc shit. But then again I love my Shadow Hawk with 3 hex jump, it is just perfect for DFA. You also see me mostly using one faction " common " or associated mechs.

I have documented proof this is how I play. My friend runs a Battletech Youtube Channel called Battle Bound. The last game he and I played we filmed. I miss playing.

Play like a benevolent GM. Do not be afraid to lose. Be happy that a good time was had by your other player(s).

Good sportsmanship and playing for fun are not incompatible with playing to win :)

Oh, how I wish other games I play could be like this. Heck I don't even know if my local group plays hard or not yet...

I have genuinely edged my opponent's dice roll because they missed a climactic shot and I wanted it to go through.

They succeeded.

They then rolled TAC to my cockpit and killed my commander clean out of his mech and I cheered.

Ahh man I did this back when I played 40k with my stupid army list that was almost guaranteed to lose but werewolves go awoooo (4th Ed Eye of Terror 13th Company list, worked until they added wulfen into the main codex again).

I take a Jagermech because if you lose, you had fun, and if you win, you earn eternal bragging rights

I build my forces on looks first, and then find the variants that I like most and fit the physical model I own the best. Optimization? Sounds like a skill issue.

Jenner might be a damn good machine, but it's butt ugly and will never make it into one of my forces.

I feel like minmax doesn't mean what it used to. In RPGs it meant you made a character that was highly specialized, with really good strengths but also really exploitable weaknesses. It was the best way to play because it encouraged teamwork. These days people seem to think it means "perfect in every way," which isn't at all the same thing.

I started the year by playing through all my minis. Took a couple months at a 1-2 lances per week.

This sounds like something a filthy Capellan would say to cope with not being able to stop my scout lance (the most fun game I ever had was sending my Steiner scout lance + their hunchback buddy barreling down the field into my friend's urbanmech company box set).

Agreed! Having good mechs is fun, stomping somebody can feel a little hollow.

"I like protomechs despite them being often terrible on the tabletop and despised by the fandom"

I had a game that i "technically" lost, and as i was congradulating the victor they said "no" because the story the tabletop told was different.

I was down an awesome (he didnt get a shot off before his cockpit was turned to slag) and a commando. I had a battered catapult, fresh out of ammo, turn the corner to see my other remaining mech (centurian) dying against a battered wolverine and a prestine awesome. What followed was a DFA attack, crushing the cockpit of the wolverine, but he fell and destroyed his laser backup weapons. This pilot then gets the mech back up and proceeds to continue the DFA attacks on the awesome, falling or taking heavy damage from ppc attacks, shedding components like rainfall, as it refused. to. die. My opponent shouting with me with every DFA attack, rooting for my rolls. We both were in awe at this little plastic piece's apparant willpower.

Down to one leg, and no weapons besides the weight of his mech falling from the sky, this battered catapult brought this awesome to its proverbial knees. The awesome lost both of its arms, one of its legs, and only had 1 ppc left. My opponent shouted with me one more time "DFA!!!" and the bruised catapult pilot launched one last hurrah. It took the awesome's remaining leg, causing it to fall, the catapult pilot failed his psr and sent the catapult careening into the mud, and but it took too much damage and the core was destroyed, since his mech was immobile but still alive, he won.

He did not accept this. He adamantly stated it was a tie, since the catapult pilot would have survived, and the awesome was immobile and wouldnt have been able to get a shot off on the catapult pilot escaping the wreakage.
