Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026

Post image

Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.

Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).

Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!

EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.

EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Don't forget about Alpha Strike Aces! Many people I talk to would rather play against the board cooperatively than against each other. Glad there finally is a co-op Battletech experience.

I think I mentioned it in my edits of the OP, but yeah, I fumbled the diagram with BattleTech: Aces. I own it, just haven't played it yet, so it slipped my mind.

Edited the original post to include a mention of Aces and when to pick it up!

Lol, with that "Clan Jade Falcon" flair I could see why you might want to put off playing Scouring Sands...

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Yeah. I actually have a canon Jade Falcon character (Khalus Pryde), so facing off against Jade Falcons as mercs is not my idea of a fun time. At least, not at first blush.

I do plan to play it at some point. Just… got to find the time.

Well Snowblind is right around the corner and should give you plenty of targets to sink those talons into.

I think it is important to note just how intrinsically interconnected both Tactical Operations books are. It's practically impossible to use a ton of the stuff in Advanced Units and Equipment without also having Advanced Rules.

Artillery, mines, and plenty of other things require both books to the degree where the company separating them was kind of pointless and is often extremely frustrating.

Yeah, it was… awkward to say the least for how to figure out how to organize Tactical Operations in the diagram. Technically half of it is unit construction rules and more aligned with the TechManual and Interstellar Operations: Alternate Eras, while the other fits in more nicely with the others in the line.

And let’s not even get started on how A Time of War is technically part of the Total Warfare line and yet at the same time is not.

The sheer amount of cross references between the TW line of books is... I understand that page space is expensive, but just a little bit of redundancy would shave off hours from my group's games.

A rules wiki would all but eliminate delays to look up edge case rules that end up binding up our skirmishes, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I will say the new Core rulebook is much better laid out and worded compared to how Total Warfare was. It’s an improvement even over the BattleMech Manual.

I have been excited for that, and a lot of the balance changes.

I won't miss machine gun hour being the deadliest thing in the game.

Are the RPGs even available in print anymore?

3

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Yes! Both Destiny and A Time of War should be available on the Catalyst website and with some online retailers.

Destiny in its third print and A Time of War is on its fourth, but a new RPG to replace both is supposedly in the works.

3

u/MojeDrugieKonto Aug 06 '26

Oh goodie! Thanks for the heads-up !

5

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Apparently this JUST went live, but this Humble Bundle includes both of the BattleTech RPGs in it:

3

u/MojeDrugieKonto Aug 06 '26

In print? My god, Christmas! 😁😁😁

3

u/Hawaiiily Aug 07 '26

I wish they would still print AGOAC somehow. Its just a great box that has a good selection of mechs that can be used in any era. The core box is cool but I dont think its the best option for new players. Maybe as a second box to buy after getting into the game more.

2

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 07 '26

I think Catalyst is eventually planning on releasing a ForcePack that has the A Game of Armored Combat ‘Mechs in it. They already are going to be doing that with the Clan Invasion box set ’Mechs with the Clan Battle Star ForcePack.

Thanks!

u/Dagrin_Kargis Aug 06 '26

Great graphic!

Though after spending more time with it I feel like "simplified ruleset" on Alpha Strike has more of a negative tone than AS deserves. I've taken to describing it as 'action-movie' Battletech cause you're always moving and firing, maybe "pace or miniature focused" would be better?

3

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Yeah, I’ve heard this criticism before, and it’s certainly not my intent to demean Alpha Strike. It has its place in BattleTech, but I don’t really know a better way to describe it compared to Core or Total Warfare. At least not in a succinct manner.

I’ve always thought of AS as something more akin to a modern wargame like Warhammer. Maybe that would be a better label.

2

u/Amon7777 FedSuns Aug 06 '26

I would definitely say Modern Wargame format as the description.

You measure in inches, units have stats and abilities on one card, and things like true line of sight and cover all make anyone who plays modern wargames will find Alpha Strike fits like a glove.

It’s also among the best gateways to classic as a standard AS game of 250pv is about an hour of play and gets new people acquainted with the setting and mechs. Classic can be a tough sell for new players I’ve found in 25+ years of play, especially if they have no context for Battletech as a setting.

1

u/itsdietz Aug 06 '26

It's larger scale is how I describe it. What scale do you want to play on? Company sized? Alpha Stike is what you want

1

u/Dagrin_Kargis Aug 06 '26

Yeah, I mentioned 'pace' because the AS intro in AS:CE describes itself as "a fast-playing game of armored combat" in the first sentence.

The 'miniatures' bit came from exactly what you mentioned with the Warhammer analogy. I think either work to describe it well if you do choose.

It's still a great reference graphic for people coming into the hobby and starting to get overwhelmed by the product history and offerings.

2

u/maastrictian Aug 06 '26

When will the core rules be released? Especially the digital version? I’m seeing a release date of 8/1, which is clearly not true.

3

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

I think it’s coming early September / October.

2

u/TheThebanProphet You down with CGB? Yeah you know me! Aug 07 '26

Not for nothing but theres more to Alpha Strike than just "simplified ruleset"

8

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 07 '26

If I could update my original post, this is what I would post now based on all the feedback I've gotten from various sources.

2

u/TheThebanProphet You down with CGB? Yeah you know me! Aug 07 '26

also maybe its worth a repost with a new pin?

1

u/TheThebanProphet You down with CGB? Yeah you know me! Aug 07 '26

yeah that tracks way better haha

1

u/itsdietz Aug 07 '26

100%. That's doing Alpha Strike a disservice

3

u/Mission-Warning-9365 Aug 06 '26

I feel like I'm just going to persist off of total warfare while waiting for the new core rules book. Probably not messing up too much of the basic rules

9

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Total Warfare is still totally valid (pun not intended). The developers have clearly not thrown it to the winds, given that Core doesn't explicitly invalidate Total Warfare or its line in the text (like Total Warfare did for its predecessors). I also can't imagine a book that could properly succeed Campaign Operations, since all of the rules in that are relatively agnostic to the system compared to the other more advanced rulebooks in the line.

That's the Regent surrounded by what looks like Kuritan Inner Sphere Standard Battle Armor. Not sure what Davion aerospace fighter is on the cover.

1

u/bulldozeprime Aug 06 '26

So as a new player with AGOAC I'll be getting the new core rules, but want to get into narrative play with my friends. Would I just be looking at Campaign Operations or would other books be necessary too?

3

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

Campaign Operations is absolutely a great purchase for what you want to do.

An alternative would be either of the RPGs, but MechWarrior Destiny is probably more suited to a narrative-focused experience, but is admittedly lighter on the rules side.

1

u/Paradoc11 Aug 06 '26

Where would you put the Mercenaries box set? I have a core box and beginner box.

2

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 06 '26

So any of the older box sets are still valid from a miniatures standpoint. That being said, Mercenaries is effectively replaced by the Core Rulebook with its updated battlefield support rules.

1

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. Aug 07 '26

Thanks for this; dropped by a hobby shop today and discovered the "Starter Box" which I didn't recognize and scooped it up. Didn't see the Core Box though!

Have I gotten through my Beginner Box and AGOAC? No...but the box was pretty...

1

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 07 '26

That’s awesome that they had the Starter Box! The Core Box Set only just got released at GenCon and should be hitting retailers in early September.

1

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. Aug 07 '26

Cheers; now for it to sit 6-12 months while I work through the rest, hah!

I'm guessing "Starter" is based around the new updated version of the rules coming up, whereas "Beginner" is the current Classic rules?

1

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 07 '26

That’s correct! The Beginner Box is the original entry point into the Total Warfare line and it is effectively replaced by the Starter Box for BattleTech Core.

TL;DR: Thank you super useful to come back to and bring my son along. Any advice on where to go next?

Thank you this is very useful to get re-started and get my son invested. We got the core box sets for Core and Alpha Strike but wasn’t sure what else would make sense to try out. I’ve been out of the loop for many many years and all the different rulesets are hard to parse.

I have loved the idea of Battletech since I was 12 and took 2 weeks to copy over the stats and “amor”/“internal” figures (in ASCII text and a dot matrix printer mind you..) from the 3025 Technical Readout. Never played much live, but did enjoy several online mechwarrior based campaigns. Got super excited about the clans and regret not buying that foot tall MadCat model ages ago. I Did read so many novels, play all the video games, etc..

Anyway, So I brought my son to his first GenCon and he wanted to try out Battletech so we did Learn to play classic (I need to find the stl for those dice templates!). And then did a Grinder. Mostly just tossing dice at each other and shredding each other’s Mechs but we had a good time. The Pods were a great hit to keep excitement high too.

He’s 12 himself now, he really enjoyed himself just wondering what are good next steps that we can do to learn the Btech universe.

1

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon Aug 09 '26

If you want to learn the lore and/or get caught up on what's been happening, BattleTech Universe is the best place to start, in my opinion. It's a great summary of everything that's happened in the last 700-1100 years of BattleTech history.

From there, the novels are a great place to go, though there's many valid entry points into reading the novels. The sourcebooks are also nice digests of specific eras and/or regions of space, depending on which ones you want to pick up.

In terms of where to go next for product, you can pick up the Aces box set(s) for Alpha Strike to do cooperative campaigns with your son, or you can start getting into the more nitty gritty with the Total Warfare line and trying to integrate that in with what Core details. That being said, for "classic" BattleTech, you might be better off focusing on things like ForcePacks, map packs, battlemats, and so on to enhance the experience rather than getting more and more advanced rules, given that Total Warfare is just going to increase the complexity of your games compared to what Core provides.

1

u/Roctapus42 Aug 10 '26

Aces sounds like it might scratch an itch to play together. Thanks for the tip. I have a vague idea of the timeline but it gets confusing with Dark Age then the iLClan era, so it’s not very clear “when” to enter. I guess there isn’t a right or wrong just whatever you want to visualize. Aside from some of the weirder apocrypha weapons.

I never played the game before, I ordered the Essentials Box, did I do alright?

1

u/neopryde Clan Jade Falcon 27d ago

Essentials is a good purchase! It's been effectively replaced with the Starter Box, but Essentials has an amazing, dynamic map that you can't get anywhere else: the Solaris VII map.

1

u/Nepu-Tech 26d ago

Oh thats awesome, I got it because it has an Arena map and I'm a fan of old Armored Core games from PS1 and PS2 like Master of Arena

1

u/Jurassic_Red 7d ago

Thanks for putting this together, I plan to play mostly 3025/clan invasion mechs with some other support elements (helicopters, maybe some infantry/elementals) but might try the latest era stuff as it’s front and centre.

Do you know what books I actually need for this as I don’t quite see what ‘advanced rules’ or ‘advanced technologies’ actual means in practice.

-1

u/somnubilist Aug 06 '26

You should mention that the tech manual is out of print and has been for years now. People curious about this game should be made aware of cgl's lack of commitment to keeping these books in print. It is a core rule book, and is vital to understanding the mechanics of the game and how the mechs are built. After buying all the other books and still not being able to buy the tech manual, even after getting screwed around by eBay after trying to buy a copy, I would recommend to anyone curious about this game to wait until CGL figures out what they're doing and commit to it. Gundam is coming out with miniature game in the near future, and with all the other options out there, committing yourself to a system that the game designers can't be bothered to keep in print is a huge mistake. Hopefully CGL gets their shit together soon, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that.

2

u/GJakab Aug 08 '26

...yeah, no, this is 100% nonsense.

  1. The Tech Manual is in no way, shape or form an essential rulebook. Custom units are rarely, if ever allowed outside of campaign play to begin with.
  2. Even if custom units are allowed in a game, unit construction is more expediently done with digital tools like MegaMekLab or Solaris Skunkwerks, which are available for free.
  3. Even if one wants to understand the fundamentals of mech construction rules, the Game of Armored Combat rulebook includes the basics and is free to download.
  4. And after all that, even if one does need the full construction rules, Tech Manual is better as a searchable PDF than as a physical book.

1

u/Deprisonne Aug 08 '26

Are you aware that PDF exists?
