That would be a pretty effective prequel to the Hatamoto Chi. Without building it I can't tell off the top of my head, but how's the armor coverage?

100

u/Cykeisme Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

but how's the armor coverage?

Well, downgrading from a 400-rated to a 240-rated fusion engine frees up a whopping 41 tons.

So even if we go from 2.5 tons of armament (the Charger 1A1's 5 small lasers) to this alternate variant's arsenal 12.5 ton arsenal, and then the 10 ton upgrade to its cooling system, that still leaves us with 21 tons to play with.

Out of that remaining 21 tons, we can easily leave 6.5 tons to improve the plating on the Charger, up to the maximum amount that its internal frame can hold, and still have 14.5 tons left over.

Hmm, wonder what OP used the remaining leftover weight for.

Edit: There's actually 2 tons more unallocated, I forgot to apply the decrease in Gyro weight when downgrading the fusion engine.

71

u/SMDMadCow Jul 26 '26

And then your speed is 3/5, which is too slow for an 80 tonner with a long range of 11-15. What if Awesome but worse territory.

16

u/the_cardfather Jul 26 '26

Yeah at this point it's a bad Marik Marauder.

3

u/Cykeisme Jul 27 '26

What if Awesome but worse territory

We should go all the way, and use some of the unallocated tonnage on this Charger to add a third large laser XD

Mostly on Heatsinks to make it Cool.

29

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

Yeah, but those aren't that heavy. There's a lot of weight left over even with those. If you're really not keen on up-arming it, consider jump jets and a few more heat sinks.

16

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Well I Could add Jumpjets on it.

20

u/Downtown_Mechanic_ I love my Marauder II Jul 26 '26

That or increase the engine rating

4

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

It can afford both the larger engine and the jump jets and still afford to upgrade the small laser to medium or drop the partially wasted half ton and add another heat sink.

0

u/azuredarkness Jul 27 '26

That's how we ended up here in the first place!

5

u/Deer_Mug Jul 26 '26

Could we up size the medlas to large and add more heatsinks, or the LL to PPCs? How many crit slots do we have left here?

6

u/OldGuyBadwheel Jul 26 '26

The Challenger was an up-gunned Charger mod from the old (now non canon) Battletechnology magazine. It went with the Pitban240, 4x large lasers, 240pts armor (15 tons) and the rest of the weight were used for heat sinks. I think it’s on Sarna.

3

u/metalman42 Jul 26 '26

I know GM still exists in the 3000’s but I didn’t know Dodge made it too lol. Is there a Ram mech?

1

u/OldGuyBadwheel Jul 26 '26

Use of the Large laser package automatically transforms it into the big horn package!

3

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

247 points of armor (15.5 tons) and it also had a medium laser in the head in addition to those four large lasers

With regards to canonicity

The CGR-SB Challenger was initially featured in BattleTechnology, Issue #0202. While that publication is no longer canon, the design itself was by virtue of being included in BattleTech Record Sheets Volume Four: Assault 'Mechs. This record sheet used the name "CGR-SB Charger", lacking the Challenger designation and featured an introduction year of 2665, like the original Charger. The designation Challenger would be canonized by the Master Unit List, and its introduction date was corrected to 3025.

3

u/NeedsMoreDakkath Mercenary Jul 26 '26

one could increase the speed to 4/6 and still have 4.5 tons left over

5

u/Mars_Oak Sea Fox Tech Jul 26 '26

at that point might as well get an awesome no?

2

u/JoushMark Jul 26 '26

Well, you could use 11t of it to upgrade the engine to a 320 and get 4/6 movement out of it.

1

u/WizardofEd Jul 28 '26

The OP states a 320 rated engine so you need to recalculate from there.

2

u/Cykeisme Jul 28 '26

OP edited, I guess (and rightly so, it does make more sense).

So from the original Charger 1A1's original 400-rated 52.5 ton engine and 4 ton gyro, we go to a 320-rated 22.5 ton engine with a 3 ton gyro, thus saving 31 tons.

We add 10 tons of armaments, and 10 tons of heat sinks.

Not stated, but presumably we add 6.5 tons of Durallex armor plating as well, the most an 80-ton BattleMech's structure can support.

Leaves us with 4.5 tons, could throw in a little bit more!

2

u/WizardofEd Jul 28 '26

I'd probably shave a half ton off the max and add MASC to get it back up in speed. It looks a bit like a fat Ostsol then with the current weapons package.

2

u/Cykeisme Jul 28 '26

MASC would definitely help it regain the intended mobility of the original design (which its name always reminds us for).

But (although I can't be sure), I think it's meant to incorporate only 3025 introtech.

2

u/WizardofEd Jul 29 '26

Well then we skip that half ton to keep 5 tons of working weight. Up the gun laser to a PPC and stash a SRM4 in the chest behind a pop open cover like some of the old missile boats. That should keep us 3025 compliant.

1

u/MidnightShdw Jul 28 '26

Downgrading the engine and slowing down the mech defeats the intended purpose of the Charger.

11

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Around maybe 15.5 tons of Armor because all of the spaces that occupied their is for armor and Heatsinks.

24

u/Magical_Savior NEMO POTEST VINCERE Jul 26 '26

There is no ammo. This is an energy zombie. I'll help you out in a bit when I have time, I suppose.

1

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Wait I said Armor not Ammo. Sorry about that.

221

u/Otherwise-Weird1695 Jul 26 '26

TIL it's called a charger because it's always charging up energy weapons, not because it's running into battle 😂

26

u/rzelln Jul 26 '26

For that you'll want PPC capacitors and Bombast lasers.

8

u/CarelessFalcon4840 Jul 26 '26

That sounds toasty. But dammit, I'm in!

66

u/EyeStache Capellan Unseen Connoisseur Jul 26 '26

See, the problem with this is that it's no good at charging.

-9

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Actually the reason why its called the Charger is because it will "Charge Up" its Lasers for an Alpha Strike against an Enemy.

5

u/GunnyStacker WarShip Proliferation Advocate Jul 26 '26

You need to swap in a couple bombast lasers then.

3

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Or some Other weapons.

P.s: why am I getting Downvoted this just a Concept Design it ain't perfect. Okay.

4

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

While they're not IntroTech or otherwise Star League era, Bombast Lasers (3064) or PPCs with capacitors (3060) would be perfect for it in that case, as both literally have to charge up before they can fire at full power.

Since any sort of PPCs make it more spiritually an Awesome, might I suggest a 3060s version with three Bombast lasers, a medium x-pulse laser, a small pulse laser, 15 tons of armor, 18 DHS, a compact gyro, and a targeting computer?

Or if you care more about heat balance than accuracy, drop the targeting computer and compact gyro for a compact engine, the medium x-pulse for an ER medium laser, two more heat sinks, and a half ton more armor.

1

u/GunnyStacker WarShip Proliferation Advocate Jul 26 '26

I personally didn't. I'm not even a fan of the 1A1 myself. I think its overhyped by people who take Tex Talks Battletech way too seriously.

3

u/vicevanghost Big guns. Big fists. Jul 26 '26

I run it all the time I love the 1a1, it exists to be a distraction and force my opponents to make choices

2

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

And Keep it Mind it was made in 2665 bombast Lasers dont exist in that Time okay.

2

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

I didn't want to hype it but I just want to make les special nor redundant. Some people this thing is the Worst version of the Challenger and they are not wrong but I want it to make it an Underdog Mech that while it wasn't big of a Deal but sometimes it does its Job. The reason why this Version is Called the Charger in this AU because ot had Several Reasons. One is that while this Mech can Perform an Alpha Strike it Will always Charged at its enemies and Blast it with its Lasers, Two It had Armor to make it out alive that's why I had to to use the Pitban 240 but people always said that it make it a Worst Challenger because the Challenger had 4 Lasers and One Medium Laser on its Head so i had to change it into a Standard 320 engine to make it slightly faster and Three is that it had a Meaning to be called as a Charger because while it is a Brick it still keeps charging forward no matter what odds it will take it.

P.s: anyone is gonna Downvote this anyway.

1

u/Spitfire6690 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I would down vote for not using the obvious choice of 2 PPCs with the PPC Capacitor, since that would actually be charging up its lasers. That said too many heatsinks, heat bar must go up on an IS laser boat or it doesn't have enough lasers.

Also a PSA on the PPC Capacitor, it also works on clan ER PPCs making them a 20 heat 20 damage weapon. While worse than a gauss rifle, it doesn't require ammo.

u/Icy-Distribution-164 Jul 28 '26

It's a little funny that you are bad mouthing Tex.  He would think it is funny too.

Nobody takes the Charger seriously.  Its trash. It's cheap. It could lose a shootout against and Urbanmech.

That is until it's throwing hands on a punch table against a mech 3 times it's cost.

1

u/GunnyStacker WarShip Proliferation Advocate Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

Exactly where did I bad mouth Tex? I said that: "I think its overhyped by people who take Tex Talks Battletech way too seriously."

TTB are in-universe documentaries done from the perspective of the character of Randolph P. Checkers, who has his own biases and knowledge gaps. Tex has openly talked about this on the BPL podcast, which I listen to regularly.

My issue is with the people who lack the media literacy to differentiate between Tex and the character he plays in TTB and take that opinion as gospel. Tex himself is really uncomfortable with being treated as some messianic figure in the Battletech community. In his eyes, he's just another fan and would prefer to be treated as such. So if anything, I'm being more respectful than anyone who just blindly parrots shit from his videos.

0

u/Icy-Distribution-164 Jul 28 '26

Sorry.
Seems we just have a difference of opinion.
Tex is a cool guy, and under rated.
I have nothing negative to say about him, and strongly disagree about him being "Overrated".

It sounds more like you have some people in your sphere of friends and hobbyists that are excited about the hobby, and want someone positive to look up to. Tex is a good guy for that. Probably the best guy in the BT media sphere at the moment. He encourages fair play, kindness, and an encouraging environment for make believe.

Who would you say is underrated in the BT community?

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

Can I interest you an a CGR-SB Challenger? 4 large lasers, one medium laser, 28 heat sinks, 15 and a half tons of armor, 240 engine. Basically an Awesome with a better heat curve and slightly spookier alpha strike

11

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

I want to make it cheaper like super cheap and the Challenger is Expensive.

24

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

There's not going to be a huge price difference. Most of the the cost of a 'Mech is the engine. You're saving under 150,000 C-Bills out of a ~6.5 million C-Bill price tag by using inferior weapons. It's basically a rounding error. Also considering you're using the same engine and fewer heatsinks and the Challenger already has the maximum possible armor for its chassis, I have to ask what you're using the spare tonnage on this for. Assuming it has maximum armor, that's 16 and a half tons not spoken for. You could easily accommodate a large ballistic weapon or a larger engine with that much mass.

10

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 26 '26

Yeah it seems... rather undergunned for the weight. And for the era. Why take this over a Lancelot?

-5

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Actually it was Supposed to be Created during the Star League Era if Wells Technologies are not that Stupid.

18

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

That doesn't really explain the large amount of unused weight though. This could pretty easily accommodate a larger engine AND jump jets with no more than minor compromises to armor or something like an LB-10X and generous ammunition reserves.

1

u/Ham_The_Spam Jul 26 '26

LBX? I thought we're talking about introtech here, did you mean a regular AC-10?

4

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

OP said Star League and the Star League had LB-10X. Make a regular AC/10 a Succession Wars refit to keep them running

9

u/OldGuyBadwheel Jul 26 '26

There’s the “historical Lore” part you need to consider- Wells made something the SLDF thought it could need, a durable scout, and the Star League Era equivalent of Discount Dan convinced the SLDF procurement office then it was HAVE TO have item!

6

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 26 '26

They weren't stupid, they were con artists. Important distinction.

10

u/Vote_for_Knife_Party Clan Cocaine Bear Jul 26 '26

They more or less created an entire genre of mech for the benefit of no one but A) their accountants and B) a cadre of dyed in the wool melee psychos that, in turn, only existed because of their hype mongering. Questionable mechanical engineering, brilliant social engineering.

3

u/ScholarFormer3455 Jul 26 '26

And they had little to no actual mech building experience, but did have subcontractors lined up--say for that engine.

The charger is a commentary on procurement foilbles, not an objectively good machine. It is, in fact arguable good only for exploiting charge rules and letting your chief tech play with spare parts during downtime.

3

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 26 '26

It's fun when you put a Charger C on the table and people go "wait it has what guns? And what armour?! And it goes HOW fast?!?!?" and then start worrying..

1

u/ScholarFormer3455 Jul 26 '26

Try a charger with xl engine, Null Sig and CLPS, ECM. Fast heavy scout.

1

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 26 '26

Take a look at what the Charger C has. It'll do that job fine, while also being too scary not to shoot everything at.

7

u/vicevanghost Big guns. Big fists. Jul 26 '26

The challenger is literally the cheapest assault mech in existence wdym

3

u/gingerbread_man123 Jul 26 '26

6,298,920cbills according to Master Unit list

37

u/ImpulsiveLance Jul 26 '26

Ah yes. Let us improve the heavy scout by making it slower than half the units in the regiment.

The thing about the Charger is it makes sense for its intended role. It’s fast, it’s beefy, and it’s not really built for prolonged engagement. I could see downgrading to a 320 engine to keep some of the speed, and even then you should still have some tonnage to spare. But the Charger is not intended to fill the role of your average Assault ‘Mech. It’s intended to fill the role of something like a low-end Medium or, more likely, a Light, but with higher survivability and a more intimidating presence if it does get caught.

I’m not a huge Charger fanboy or anything, but its woeful armament is there to compensate for the actual design remit: make it big, make it fast. It’s not a frontliner or a lynchpin. It’s the Get In, Get On, Get Off, Get Out of Battlemechs. And by downrating its engine so hard, it’s not going to Get In until the battle’s already joined.

What you want is a Challenger. Or maybe an Awesome. But we already have Challengers and Awesomes at home. They’re called the Challenger and the Awesome.

Better yet, just take a Warhammer, because it looks cooler and fills roughly the same role at less tonnage.

11

u/Admirable-Respect-66 Jul 26 '26

My issue with the charger is that it doesn't have better sensors or anything. The small lasers are almost pointless, swap most of them for a TAG and let the artillery/missiles be your primary weapon, and make it a much better scout.

7

u/Ham_The_Spam Jul 26 '26

I'd expect quirks like Improved Communications and Improved Sensors, but the Charger only has a Barrel Fist so it's clearly a melee mech pretending to be a scout

6

u/Zippydaspinhead Jul 26 '26

Flamers, MG's, TAG, and maybe a NARC for good measure.

Get in, splat a NARC flare on it, paint it up, watch the thunder rain in, target the open wounds of anything still alive afterwards with the flamers and MG's.

Give it an ewar package and sensor boost, and it pulls scout and the most terrifying anti-infantry role ever.

1

u/tipsy3000 Jul 26 '26

You can take it further and make it a proper upgrade. Replace the engine with a LFE to free up space for a MASC system as your speed upgrade, FF armor to increase durability, replace the SL's with ERSL and add in a narc for field support.

Boom its still a charger but better.

26

u/gingerbread_man123 Jul 26 '26

54kph 80tn assault? Even with max armour it'll be outgunned by an Awesome (which is cheaper) and outmanuevered by a Victor.

Battlemaster at 5tn heavier is faster and outguns it.

21

u/Severe_Ad_5022 Houserule enthusiast Jul 26 '26

Is there a reason it only has a 240 engine and not a 320?

27

u/Cykeisme Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

To free up more weight, why else?

Edit: I see what you mean, unless I'm missing something, even maxing out the armor, 14.5 tons are still unaccounted for.

And upgrading from a 240 to a 320 engine only uses up 11 tons.

5

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

Shouldn't it be 16.5 tons? The Challenger has the same engine and maxed armor, but 4 LL and 1 ML (+8.5 tons) and 28 heat sinks (+8 tons)

4

u/dagthegnome Jul 26 '26

A 240 standard fusion engine weighs 11.5 tons plus 3 for the gyros. A 320 weighs 22.5 tons plus 4 for the gyros.

1

u/Balmung60 Purple Birb Good, Green Birb Bad Jul 26 '26

I wasn't talking about the weight increase to go from 3/5 to 4/6, but rather the amount of weight unaccounted for in the current build.. And I can actually check my work on MegaMekLab now and it's 16.5 tons unaccounted for, not 14.5.

This could easily upengine to 320, add jump jets, and upgrade the emotional support small laser to a medium.

3

u/dagthegnome Jul 26 '26

Point taken, but then it's just an Assault Grasshopper. I've never understood this urge to make the Charger into something other than a Charger when there's always already a better chassis for whatever they have in mind. The Charger does one thing reasonably well: anybody who doesn't like that playstyle doesn't have to play one.

1

u/Cykeisme Jul 27 '26

Agreed, it's got character, just like Urbies.

And no need to try making "fixed" variants, canon has t he 1A5, that's pretty decent.

2

u/Cykeisme Jul 27 '26

Yeah I forgot to account for the decrease in gyro tonnage when going from the original 1A1's 400 to this 240, MegaMek is handling it automatically there.

13

u/Commissarfluffybutt Jul 26 '26

You've fallen victim to a common mode of thinking, by "fixing" the Charger via removing it from its niche. I'd take an Awesome or Black Knight over this while still needing a "distraction Carnifex" in list with that tactic in mind.

Excellent art by the way.

11

u/OldWrangler9033 Jul 26 '26

I would suggest the CGR-SB Challenger variant instead. 4 Large Lasers , 15 1/2 tons of Standard armor, 28 single heatsinks, slowed to average Assault 'Mech speeds and a emotional support Medium Laser in the head. For those people who want put surprise during the Succession Wars to your average MechWarrior thinking it's a normal pushover Charger.

6

u/va_wanderer Jul 26 '26

The -SB helped win me a regional MechForce title back in the day. It's absolutely lovely.

2

u/vicevanghost Big guns. Big fists. Jul 26 '26

I made a custom challenger that swaps to double heat sinks and uses the spare tonnage to go up to a 4/6 movement profile, no weapon changes, that thing trucks and fucks and it makes me deeply sad that it isnt a real variant

2

u/UnsanctionedPartList 3000 Black Stukas of Hanse Davion. Jul 26 '26

Yeah unfortunately the weapons loadout doesn't really tech up: IS ER large lasers are too hot and heavy to boat - or rather, the bulky IS DHS make an effective heat load of more than 40 hard, and that requires a big engine. Is large pulse lasers are short range weapons that require speed and preferably jump jets and many of the more later tech is too heavy and/or hot.

You could always take PPC's but at that point you're taking away from the identity.

Best I could do was speed it up and tack a targeting computer to the large lasers. Maybe pulse modules. Or speed it up back to the old charger speed and keeping it as-is.

2

u/OldWrangler9033 Jul 27 '26

To be honest Clan Snow Raven DID up gun the Charger by making the Charger C. Clan weapons make everything nice.

2

u/UnsanctionedPartList 3000 Black Stukas of Hanse Davion. Jul 27 '26

Yeah it's honestly easy mode.

"oh look at that I can fit in a big XL and a bunch of clan large pulse lasers."

1

u/vicevanghost Big guns. Big fists. Jul 26 '26

I dont want an enhanced weapon loadout I just want exactly what I described

1

u/UnsanctionedPartList 3000 Black Stukas of Hanse Davion. Jul 26 '26

Oh yeah, but it's also the best; you just combine the best of the A1 with the best of the SB and get a rock solid trooper. 4 large lasers isn't stellar but you can't really ignore it either. Maybe the pulse modules would work?

10

u/Custard-Equivalent Jul 26 '26

man a supposed cavalry mech that goes as slow as an atlas sure is a mech, this is just a worse battlemaster

1

u/Ham_The_Spam Jul 26 '26

considering the speed I'd say it's an Awesome but isn't

8

u/Larnievc Jul 26 '26

What's not to like about a 64 damage charge attack under the new rules? It's only 900 or so points and can be a cheap way to fill out an assault lance? I have an Kuritan order lance with four of them. It's like a Bison stampede.

8

u/overwatch Jul 26 '26

Or you could lean into what makes a Charger a Charger, and give it a super charger and an Axe.

4

u/Beef__Strokinoff Jul 26 '26

We need more Chargers with TSM, when it becomes available. I know the Cudgel exists, but I want a "budget" version for smacking the shit out of people outside of a Solaris VII arena.

Why mess with perfection?

3

u/Anubis_ZA Jul 26 '26

You clearly misunderstand its job...

Charge is an ability... combing movement speed and weight for damage.

The charger weighing 80 tons and doing 80km/H results in some pretty good numbers whilst ignoring its weapons loadout

3

u/vicevanghost Big guns. Big fists. Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

To improve your design I have used a 4/6 movement profile, moved the large lasers to the torsos and the medium lasers to the hands so you can punch guilt free, upgraded the head laser to a third medium, and maxed out the armor. With 24 single heat sinks it is roughly heat neutral. This turns it from an atlas but worse (your design), to a genuine competitor to other cheap assaults like early banshees and battlemasters. Hell the alpha output is comparable to a battlemaster at 31 potential damage but with the movement profile to back it up compared to your design .

3

u/thelefthandN7 Jul 26 '26

Yeah, we don't love the Charger because it makes sense, we love the Charger because it does the funny.

Flying tackle intensifies...

3

u/BagsYourMail Jul 26 '26

That's so boring tho

3

u/Ishidan01 Jul 26 '26

The fact that Wells decided to max engine and armor to comically have nothing left for weapons was kinda the point, this is just another laser boat now.

3

u/Primary-Latter Jul 26 '26

This robs the charger of everything that makes it interesting in the name of a very mediocre execution of "generic introtech assault mech."

The Charger doesn't do damage with its guns, it does it with fists, feet, and the delightful rule of f=mv; it has that tonnage-devouring engine because that's how you get the biggest v possible.

(Your art is quite good.)

3

u/Ok_Shame_5382 Jul 26 '26

Am I missing something? This is just a worse CGR-SB Challenger.

The Challenger packs 4 large lasers, a medium laser, and 28 heat sinks with max armor into the Charger's frame with the seame engine.

2

u/TheRealRigormortal Jul 26 '26

Needs more small lasers

2

u/CycleZestyclose1907 Jul 26 '26

You know, the Charger's 400 rated engine would have made much more sense if it had been originally specced to use an XL Engine (frees up 26 tons!) and the standard engine is a Succession Wars downgrade.

Except if the Charger didn't exist, who would be manufacturing 400 rated standard engines? No other Star League era mech uses it!

Maybe the Charger only exists to justify the Engine Rating chart going up to 400.

I feel like with this armament it still could be 4/6 MP. That would give it its own niche because there aren't that many 4/6 Assaults in 3025 (and the basic Banshee is awful).

Actually, by simply downgrading the engine it can be 4/6/4 with same armament. The armor coverage is no better than on the original Charger, though.

But if I was doing this kind of upgrade to a Charger then I'd also move all the weapons to the torso so it can jump at someone and then start throwing punches AND fire everything. Because only two Large and two Medium lasers still is undergunned for an Assault mech.

BattleMaster, Goliath, Banshee, Zeus, Cyclops, and Victor all say "hello." Only three Assault 'mechs in TRO 3025 are 3/5 (AWS, STK, AS7) and the Charger is 5/8. The rest are 4/6/X

Arguably, this is just a Much Worse Awesome, as it lacks the range to make up for its lack of mobility. PPCs or LRMs would make it marginally better, but then we'd just have an Atlas or a Stalker or an Awesome.

You need 27 and 1/2 tons for its weapon weight and additional heat sinks to function heat neutral. The 80 ton Mech category can only carry a maximum 15 and a half tons of standard armor plate. You need 33 tons to achieve the above defensive and delivery system as described. It appears that the introductory technology era standard speed for heavy and assault mechs and many medium mechs as well is 4/6. Honestly that is that era's speed. You get 27 tons left over using a 320 class engine. That means you have to cut 6 tons from somewhere on the intro tech design we are working on. And that comes from heat sinks and armor. You have no weight saving Technologies to apply to your battle Mech Construction. You can get 3 tons back directly from heat sinks. You'll no longer be heat neutral but unless you are really pushing the envelope small lasers rarely getting combat, one heat sink. The next two tons are for running, land movement Heat. Kind of a tradeoff in tabletop Warfare in this era: standing still makes no heat, two more heat sinks. Then drop three tons from your armor load down to 12 and 1/2 tons of protection and you've met your 6 ton requirement. Introductory tech levels are all about trade-offs.

So now I can't use it to bludgeon another assault mech that wasn't looking since now the punching hand is an expensive laser? I don't know abou that.

Joking aside I do like the idea of a revision that does it's role better. Can you make the Stone Rhino good next or a LAM?

1

u/dwellerinthedark Jul 26 '26

In my last YAML mechwarrior 5 run I salvaged a charger and built something very similar from its wreck.

A 80t chassis is alot of space to work with if you are prepared to replace that engine. It was incredible fun as the charger often turns up at lower difficulty warzones so you can grab it early and use it to bully fleets of tanks, helps and lights. None of which stand the remotest chance if scratching the armour.

u/Magical_Savior NEMO POTEST VINCERE Jul 26 '26

So, to better match the weapons, this seems about like the proper setup.

1

u/Magical_Savior NEMO POTEST VINCERE Jul 26 '26

If I were matching speed at 3/5, it might be this.

1

u/e4rth80uNd Ex-RAF Jul 26 '26

You're going to have to shrink the engine to fit those weapons in and if you shrink the engine, why, that's not a Charger at all!

1

u/tribulex Jul 26 '26

240 engine? You have no idea what ur doing, get your hands off my charger. If it doesn't go 5/8 I don't want it

1

u/PadicReddit Jul 26 '26

I like it!

Have you seen the 1A2 described in the TRO centennial edition?

The Charger does make sense, it wasn't terribly useful in-universe, but the logic behind it is sound: it's effectively the same logic as the SR-71 or the EF-111A, no weapons to speak of, if it's confronted by anything that can hurt it it's able to run away, if it's confronted by something that can catch it they're going to struggle to hurt it. The lack of weapons was intentional. They could have given it 2 medium lasers but they didn't want the pilots thinking they could take on a mech, so they went with small lasers (which when the game was first released were considered anti-infantry weapons).

Realistically, all the 1A1 needs to "make sense" for its intended role would have been something like Ferro Fibrous or Endo-Steel so it could carry more armour (and maybe something like an active probe or MASC). You wouldn't want an XL engine despite the weight savings because part of the Charger's appeal is the low cost and the fact that you blow both its side torsos off and it doesn't particularly suffer for it.

What you've made is a very generic (and frankly still underwhelming) assault mech. There is zero reason anyone would use this when they could spend 80,000 more c-bills and field an Awesome instead.

1

u/Enough-Run-1535 Jul 26 '26

Terrible design. How is the struggling galactic wide Military Industrial Complex supposed to market the Charger as an assault scout now?

1

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

This is just an AU story okay if wells created a Zombie Mech at the Very Start.

1

u/Enough-Run-1535 Jul 26 '26

Straight from the 3025 Technical Manual:

“The CGR-1A1 was intended to be a heavy scout that could enter well-defended areas where it might have to take damage yet still be able to withdraw at high speed.”

1

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Alright just clarify this and Before All you down voted me for this. It was Created in 2665 okay not in the Current Era before the Succession Wars were the Challenger was Supposed to be. Okay.

So in this Version of AU the Charger was created by Wells as a Standard yet Boring mech. They Technically created this Mech as a "Zombie" which is Low Maintenance and Rugged Mech Using the Most Readily Available Parts in the Inner Sphere particularly the Lasers and Engine. When The SLDF saw this Mechs for the First Time they had Mixed Results and Opinions some stated its a "Poor Man's Awesome." Some its just a Boring Mech. While Sales are Okay and was Bought Largely by the SLDF as a Militia Mech or something Reliable like Controlling Riots.

Of course by the Time of the Succession Wars some Mercs bought this Mechs because while it had Some Mixed Results it still works as a Good Zombie Mech in some Categories, its Good as a Bodyguard Mech or Just a Meat Shield for Other Advance Mechs. While some Variants were created the Creation of the Challenger was Created as well as a "Upgrade." To the standard Model

P.s: Take note all of you that this Mech was created in 2665 okay and I want to be Lore Accurate since Wells Technologies doesn't know much about Battlemechs and Bombast Lasers doesnt exist before around 3065. I'm being literally lore accurate here.

2

u/Kenway Jul 26 '26

Is it lore-accurate to be missing like 16 tons?

1

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

Its just a Concept Design its not even a Big Thing yet. Unless I Just add Jump Jets into it.

2

u/Kenway Jul 26 '26

That doesn't make sense. They'd design an 80ton mech in-universe with all the weight allocated for the chassis. If in a vacuum, it would just be a lighter weight-class. Out-of-universe, it's not rules-legal without all the weight allocated.

Jump jets, 1 extra heatsink, and shave .5 tons of armour would work, I guess.

1

u/Technogen Jul 26 '26

Keeping the LL, ML, SL style build we can max armor go with 20 heat sinks and put a 335 engine in it. That will give it a better movement profile while giving it enough armor to actually charge in. Realistically I would downgrade the LL to ML and put that weight into an even higher engine and it can still do the scouting job.

1

u/Luxny Magistracy of Canopus Jul 26 '26

Congrats, you invented a Crab! :D

1

u/Ok_Calligrapher7890 Jul 26 '26

unfortunatly the cappelan version is the only one that makes sense since everything else lacks punch

1

u/Chensensn40 Jul 26 '26

I love the charger. It had lots of speed and armor, at the cost of fire power. Better to have a lot of rockets and then close quarter melee. More fun that way.

1

u/Amidatelion IlClan Delenda Est Jul 26 '26

Great art. Doesn't work as a mech, and there's so much leftover tonnage you could make nearly another whole-ass mech from it.

1

u/Imaginary_Sherbet Jul 26 '26

Naaa charger charges

1

u/Wolf_Hreda Black Hawk-KU Supremacy Since 3055 Jul 26 '26

Bump it up to a 320 engine. There's plenty of room. You can bump it up to just a half ton shy of max armor and fit an additional 5 medium lasers on top of the two you've got with the large lasers. You could when remove the small laser if you really need those last 7 points of armor.

1

u/Fedorchik Jul 26 '26

It wouldn't be a charger anymore xD

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '26

It only has 5 small lasers if it is the 1a1 as tonnage does not allow more than 2.5 tons of weapons

1

u/Loud-Ad-7014 Jul 26 '26

Endo, ferro, DHS, 3 MPL's, 2 ERML's and a TC.

1

u/Skeleton_Phoenix Jul 26 '26

Cool, you've made a very uninspired 80 ton assualt mech.

1

u/Silent_Technology540 Jul 26 '26

It’s a good build but if it isn’t a Solaris monster I wouldn’t pilot it

At a min it needs to have MASC or a super charger ideally both

1

u/Amaroq001 Jul 26 '26

I mean, I'd love to have this version. I got a soft spot for "bad" mechs, and the Charger is at the top of the list

1

u/King_of_Rooks Jul 26 '26

Cutting the speed that much and loading up on bigger guns is the exact opposite of what the Charger was created to be. It's not improvement, it's a failure on your part to understand the assignment.

Also, Chargers are great, esp if you were playing back in the old days.

1

u/Ok_Walrus9047 Riding the Heat Line Jul 27 '26

If the Charger first came into the lore as a sensical assault instead of a small-laser stuffed punchbot, it would not be the beloved memelord that it is.

1

u/Valin-Tenebrous Jul 27 '26

I think the issue with this proposed redesign, is that the Charger was originally designed and intended to fill the roll of battlefield scouting. That's specifically why they shoved the biggest fuck off engine they could find into the damn thing. Not saying they succeeded in that original product goal, but I am saying that to caution against the engine choice here.

1

u/RaRaRedsun Jul 27 '26

Okay but hear me out. Blasers

u/Super_Transition253 Jul 27 '26

1

u/LightsGameraAxn 80 tons and 5 small lasers Jul 27 '26

1

u/Angry_Beans619 Jul 28 '26

Of the 5 original small lasers, I’d drop 4, replace them with 2 mediums and keep the last small to deal with uppity infantry or large periphery dogs

1

u/ThePBG48 Jul 26 '26

Honestly it’s a pretty good build.

Though a lot of people forget the charger is meant as a relatively fast cheap Assualt to go up and punch people or use the charge rules.

The small lasers are not the weapon: the mech is the weapon!

Also it costs slightly less than 1000 BV so it sits comfortably in the medium mech range for 3025 intro mechs in terms of price. How much is yours in terms of BV?

But yes, there are better mechs.

0

u/LezziestMania MechWarrior Jul 26 '26

alright fine. someone said that its quite slow so can someone suggest me what engine fits for it yet retaining its weapons and specific loadout.

u/Ultrapuert0s Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

It looks like a heavier pseudo Black Night but its a good conversion. Here is the Mech Dattasheet of the conversion, it gots only 15Tns of armour (max is 15.5Tn) so i can add another Heat sink (it gots 25 so Heat neutral)

Assuming max armour and actual top speed of 64kph, you're still 4.5 tons under weight.
