I wonder: Would Battletech Gunpla kits sell? I could definitely imagine there being a market for them.

79

u/ArtisianWaffle Jul 14 '26

Yes. They would sell. My wallet would not survive it though. Both Gunpla and BattleTech are like crack to me lmfao.

20

u/neilarthurhotep Jul 14 '26

Imagine if Catalyst teamed up with BanDai for this. They already produce so many licensed models, I think it would actually be possible.

12

u/Adept_Advertising_98 Jul 14 '26

Bandai does have the rights to produce Macross kits, and owns the studio that made Dougram and Crusher Joe, so some of the Reseens’ resemblance to the older designs should not be a problem.

7

u/zprops Jul 14 '26

I've made a slew of mechs/vehicles in 1/100 to go with my Macross/Gundam/bandai kits. It really is the sweet spot.

A few armor kits in 1/32 or 1/35 from bandai would be cool, too.

5

u/CreepHost Jul 14 '26

I would kill for an Atlas.

14

u/TheOnionBro Jul 14 '26

The 30 Minute Mission Armored Core sets are ALWAYS sold out.

Battletech kits would absolutely move units. Half of them would move into my house.

8

u/Never_heart Jul 14 '26

There are a lot of people whobreally like the setting and mechs but are not that into the tabletop. You could even use them for a Solaris themed side game about mech duels in the arenas. There would absolutely be an interest

5

u/AKoolPopTart Jul 14 '26

Maybe a limited time thing? Just to test the waters?

1

u/Relative-Librarian-7 Jul 14 '26

They would... But I think that will never gonna Happen.

There where some copyright Problems back in the days soooo...

4

u/greet_the_sun Jul 14 '26

They could just avoid the unseen? Even though I'm pretty sure all the licensing issues have been resolved at this point?

-2

u/Relative-Librarian-7 Jul 14 '26

They are. But Just my opinion....they pissed of one japanese Company so...

Not to be missunderstood... I would also buy every BT Gunpla kit.

Maybe some Chinese 3rd Party Company someday...

10

u/ARandomGuardsman834 Jul 14 '26

No Japanese company was pissed off. Hell, FASA even worked with Studio Nue, the creators of Macross, for JP Battletech. Harmony Gold are the assholes responsible for the Unseen, and they themselves are responsible for blocking international releases of Macross so they can continue pushing Robotech.

7

u/Mental-Dot-6574 Jul 15 '26

Obligatory fuck Harmony Gold.

2

u/Adept_Advertising_98 Jul 14 '26

Most of the Reseen designs are completely different than the Unseen versions, and they can use the Project Phoenix or Mechwarrior designs for the ones that are a bit too close.

1

u/MR-GRUD Jul 16 '26

But no one wants a large-scale Reseen Marauder! 😝🤮🤮

1

u/Adept_Advertising_98 Jul 16 '26

I meant the modern design. I thought the modern designs were called Reseen, but it turns out Reseen is just another name for the Project Pheonix designs.

1

u/bugamn Jul 14 '26

I've bought Macross kits for mechs that came from there, so I'm evidence some people would buy. But the similarity with Macross is probably the issue here

1

u/Otherwise-Weird1695 Jul 14 '26

They sell armored core gunpla

1

u/Beef__Strokinoff Jul 14 '26

Brother, I'd buy the FUCK out of that- I'd even put in the effort to learn how to paint them properly.

1

u/Majestic_Ride_9561 Jul 15 '26

Cough cough, Hasegawa Macross kits. I have a Glaug in my backlog, and while it took me a bit to track one down for an alright price, I'd bet at least a small sum that that rarity has been affected by Battletech fans looking for Unseen 'mechs.

1

u/tricksterloki Jul 15 '26

I do not need a second branch of BattleTech backlog that would run parallel to my gunpla backlog.

1

u/Sunny-Milk Clan Smoked Jaguar Jul 18 '26

I would absolutely get some; standard gunpla High Grades are just about in scale with N Scale model railway, and I’d 100% love to have some mechs to put around my train.

62

u/OrdoMalaise Jul 14 '26

That does look very, very cool.

36

u/The_Brofisticus Jul 14 '26

What was that Gabe Newell quote? Piracy is a distribution problem?

No special STL, just took the regular ones and raised the scale slider to the max my printer would allow. We're hungry for larger model kits. Either CGL can sell them to us, or...

11

u/WhiterunWarriorPrjct Jul 14 '26

God I love the PGI marauder. What a lad. I need to get my buddy to print one.

-10

u/AKoolPopTart Jul 14 '26

Eh...the pgi marauder looks way too bulky for what it should be

9

u/overwatch Jul 14 '26

I like OPs better. But this one is good too. We cant have too many Marauders.

5

u/The_Brofisticus Jul 14 '26

PGI's sleek upgrade gives me Constitution refit vibes. I very much prefer it to the Robotech-influenced post-unseen CGL design, but that isn't the point. If CGL sold the large resin models they showed off at a previous convention (GamesCon?), it would be their product on my shelf. Their Succession War-era production capabilities and the relatively small size of the Battletech market are both holding them back.

1

u/GamerGriffin548 Flea Bag and Awesome Sauce Jul 15 '26

The old Marauder model is closer to the new Marauder II model.

1

u/Loganp812 Jul 17 '26

On the other hand, at least the AC/5 isn’t ridiculously oversized.

7

u/overwatch Jul 14 '26

Sentinel! Please distribute the STLs to CGL, so they can sell us this!

2

u/rzelln Jul 16 '26

And make the cockpit pop open so we can put a GI Joe in there.

2

u/overwatch Jul 16 '26

Wild Card even has a cooling vest AND a neurohelmet. Lets go!

22

u/Patapon80 Jul 14 '26

Not sharing STLs? 😞

40

u/AKoolPopTart Jul 14 '26

I believe Sentinel is the designer of a lot of the CGL minis, so he legally can't

16

u/Stinger410 Jul 14 '26

I mean, you legally can't distribute that close of knock-offs of CGL minis regardless of your status as a CGL mini designer... (source, am a CGL minis designer)

8

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 14 '26

It'd be a great way to stop being a CGL minis designer.

4

u/AKoolPopTart Jul 14 '26

Understandable. I just really wish cgl gave large scale (12" at most) model kits that can be posed a shot. Even if it was a limited run with pre-orders, I think it would do well.

4

u/zprops Jul 14 '26

Even if he could legally do it, there's plenty of reasons many modelers (like myself) dont sell/distribute files either way.

And people in the community feeling entitled to our work help cement that view even more.

4

u/Stinger410 Jul 15 '26

Oh gosh, I'm right there with you on that one... Entitlement is usual a fast way to shut down enthusiasm on the modeler's part.

3

u/Neither-Ad-1589 Jul 14 '26

I need Battletech gunpla

I believe Sentinel is the designer of a lot of the CGL minis, so he legally can't....but yeah...thanks for showing off something that the community might enjoy as a product line, large-scale models kits

11

u/SuperNoise5209 Jul 14 '26

I'd totally buy a model kit. I think there's probably a lot of overlap - I'd bet many Battletech enthusiasts have built some gunpla or other models.

6

u/Stinger410 Jul 14 '26

I mean, a company has a right to protect their IP right? I'm a 3D designer, and I'd be kinda irked to have my stuff perfectly replicated and then distributed. Does protecting my small business or someone else protecting my small business make me/them selfish? I don't think so.

-1

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 14 '26

I didn't say anything about selling the files. If you wanna monetize it, fine. That's what Polygon Masterworks did. That's not what is going on here; they're saying they've made something cool, they have the ability to release something that would be really cool for the hobby, but they just won't.

Apparently this is a CGL modeler so there's likely a legal reason for it. It's the typical failure of messaging.

Even still; i hate this. Because CGL isn't some little birthday boy, they're a massive company and I'm not going to be thrilled that they can charge people $50 for what could be $10 in filament.

3

u/nova_cat Kisho lives! Jul 14 '26

massive company

They sure aren't.

1

u/battletech-ModTeam Jul 14 '26

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but kindness is required.

1

u/Kettereaux Jul 14 '26

Dude, calm the eff down.

You have no right to his work. He made the files, he chooses what to do with them. If he wants to share them, great. If he can't, legally, cool. If he wants to monetize them, awesome. He gave you an awesome picture. Check your entitlement.

4

u/zprops Jul 14 '26

100 percent.

Entitled is the perfect word. Unfortunately, until these guys commit several years to learning pro level modeling skills and spend another 100-200 hours modeling something this complex to perfection, they will never understand why some people don't want to just give it away.

We aren't going to change their minds, and that's fine.

They can keep screaming about it, and we can keep our work to ourselves. The world will keep turning.

-2

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

I have no right to the work; I do have the ability to critique the behavior.

If they are not legally able to release them; I will critique CGL for acting in ways that are hostile to the hobby.

If they are able to release them but just doesn't want to; I'll critique them for being selfish and acting in ways that are hostile to the hobby.

If they/CGL sell the STL files, I will applaud them for being forward thinking in how to approach 3D printing in the hobby space.

Edit; Sentinel confirmed this was a personal project that is not distributable due to legal reasons. I was mistaken in thinking this was a CGL sponsored project.

4

u/Sentinel373 Jul 16 '26

Allow me to clarify the situation, I am the original modeler for the redesign of this miniature, I decided that i wanted to test my skills and make a large scale and pose able version of it. I asked no permission to make this. but i did consult with people at catalyst if i could show it. And so I did.

Catalyst did NOT ask me to make this. This was me acting on my own. Catalyst has all the rights to the marauder. It was a personal project that from the get go, I did not have any right to distribute, nor do i claim to. I just wanted to make it clear from the get go that people should not even bother asking for the STL files. Cause it will not happen.

Also once i made my prototype i found many flaws with my design. which caused the joints to weaken over time and eventually give out. Had I released these files this same thing would have happened to every version that people printed. so no, i don't want to distribute the files, nor do i have the rights to.

Just because I made one semi successful prototype, it does not mean its ready for production or distribution.

1

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 16 '26

Gotcha. If that's the situation, that is rough but I understand. I thought this project was more official given I could tell it was the same model/sculpt as the official miniature. Now the situation makes sense. Apologies.

I hope CGL pursues selling more official Destiny scale models and works with you to help make them posable, because it's a beautiful sculpt, a sick idea and there is clearly a niche for it, either as selling the files for home printing or as a gunpla style assembly kit. To clarify my position, I hope CGL pursues the former as well since it is a consumer/hobbyist friendly move.

Also, your/Shimmering Sword's Warhammer is my favorite version of my favorite mech. So thank you for making it!

3

u/zprops Jul 17 '26

It's "rough"? What?

And clearly not the same sculpt. Engineering additions aside. This detail and complexity does not exist in the ~2" miniature.

In any case, and the most important part- you made your takes clear- be it an individual or CGL official work. "Flame on" to all.

Funny to see your tone drastically change after a CGL affiliate entered the chat, after your torches and pitchfork take.

Please stick to....whatever it is you do outsode of this.

1

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 17 '26

I had assumed two options; someone scanned their 2" model, upscaled it, split it apart, cleaned it up and then added additional details that are not present on the original, which I assumed would allow the creator to distribute due to it being transformative in nature, or this was an official CGL project that was going to be monetized in a exploitative way.

Given what Sentinel has said; I'm actually more inclined to believe this is closer to the original model they created and submitted to CGL, I doubt they model their mechs solely on a 2" scale.

And yes when the original artist offers a very reasonable and clarifying overview of what the situation is, I am going to be polite and appreciative of the response.

And brother, maybe you should find something to actually do outside of patrolling a now 3 day old Reddit thread white knighting for someone I've already squashed the issue with.

Weird behavior.

u/zprops Jul 14 '26

"If he is able to release them but just doesn't want to; I'll critique him for being selfish and acting in ways that are hostile to the hobby."

Literally the definition of entitlement right there. Plenty of free marauder files out there. Go use those or make them yourself. That's how the rest of the world works, I don't understand why this hobby is any different.

0

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 15 '26

"Plenty" being 1 rip of the Piranha Games version.

And the reason why this hobby is different is because it's based on a file system. CGL could easily offer the STL files for sale so that people who own a 3D printer could print their own version at home while also offering high quality kits for people without a printer. They're likely to make a profit either way.

They aren't doing that for some reason. I have my suspicion why.

Also, good to know that "entitlement" means possessing opinions about something. Wonderful.

2

u/zprops Jul 15 '26

1) clearly you havent done any digging for files. Plenty of MWO variants, interpretations, and unseen stuff. Yes, a near perfect CGL isn't floating around for obvious reasons.

2) two parts to this. Critiquing CGL, and criticizing this guy personally for not flat out giving away his work. The second is entitlement, full stop. The only props/credit I give you is for simply owning that you rip people who don't give you their work. (Better than being in denial about it, I guess). The first is CGLs business decision and is a whole enchilada I won't get into. Moot point as again, this is this guy's personal post, and features a significant amount of work beyond the base CGL sculpt. You are responding to a person, not CGL but have made it clear you would "critique his behavior" for not handing his files over without a clear legal disclaimer from CGL that says he can't.

3) again, not going to get into it. This isn't about CGL. I believe you are trying to make it more and more about them because you don't have a leg to stand on by critiquing the individual.

4) psychological definition straight from Google: "A personality trait or cognitive bias characterized by an inflated belief that one inherently deserves special treatment or privileges. Often implies a sense of receiving without necessarily earning it. Examples include expecting special accommodations without cause or an unjustified sense of superiority." The victim card thing is very old and tired. Please just don't.

3

u/greet_the_sun Jul 14 '26

You need to direct that anger towards US copyright laws instead of CGL or this guy...

2

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 14 '26

This take does not function under the current copyright framework we all operate in.

2

u/Past_Search7241 Jul 15 '26

That's not how you ask someone for something.

2

u/Kettereaux Jul 14 '26

Him outright stating he has the files isn't some sinister conspiracy. Of course he has the files or the thing wouldn't exist. By acknowledging he has the files and announcing his policy, he's saving himself, and the community, several dozen PMs that could have been an emai... the thing he did in the post.

STLs not being released by CGL is not 'hostile to the hobby'. The hobby is playing the game, not 3D printing. You may choose to use 3D printing to improve your game, cool, but it is not necessary.

Him chosing to not release them may be as simple as 'I don't want to deal with people assuming I am now their personal tech support as to why it didn't print with their setup'. This is something that comes up all the time in Open Source software. People get something provided as a nice gesture and they turn it into an obligation. Or he wants to monetize them. That's apparently 'selfish' which, you know, here's a short pier. Learn to do the work yourself.

Lastly, CGL has no obligation to you to get into the 3D printing space. It is not a space that has anything like a solid business plan, as opposed to the one they're using which demonstrably does. Maaaaybe it works. Maaaaaybe it don't. Maaaaaybe a company operating at a reasonably small scale doesn't feel like risking their existence. Maaaaybe CGL jumping into a pool that might bankrupt them is 'hostile to the hobby'.

1

u/namelessxfish Jul 17 '26

Is this how you react to every fanartist? Or in this case, an official artist doing their own personal projects? Way to backpedal

-1

u/HourlyB Red Corsairs Mercenary Group Jul 17 '26

Yes if a someone made a very cool 3d printing project and then refused to release it without any sort of clarification as to why, I would look at them sideways.

1

u/zprops Jul 17 '26

Literally entitled. They don't owe you a file, an explanation, nothing.

2

u/morbo-2142 Jul 14 '26

Pose-able large scale battlemechs would definitely sell. Especially at a standard scale like 28mm

2

u/Fidel89 I sell Regents and Regent accessories. Jul 14 '26

I would buy a regent so fucking fast it’s not even funny

2

u/CogProphet Jul 15 '26

I would throw stupid money at a Marauder that was the same size as the Joytoy Knight figure.

4

u/_Crashlander_ Jul 14 '26

Unseen or bust.

1

u/B-Ninja Jul 15 '26

A Marauder is my favorite mech, since I got into Battletech in the late 80s, I'd buy a model like that easily and without hesitation. I own the Robotech toy one myself.

1

u/HeyitzEryn MechWarrior (editable) Jul 15 '26

It's beautiful

1

u/DM_Voice Jul 17 '26

I would absolutely *love* to see CGL partner with Bandai to make BattleTech gunpla.

1

u/Robbinsmods Jul 17 '26

Please please please please please...

I started playing MWO when I was around 8 years old and have wanted large-sized posable mechs ever since. I'm not into tabletop gaming but I do collect action figures and would KILL to have an Atlas, Highlander, and Commando posed up on my shelf.

1

u/Arquinsiel MechWarrior (questionable) Jul 14 '26

Huh, looks like the Gothic Blazers in the arms.
