I really don't want that. I want a system based around actual combined arms similar to wargame/warno/broken arrow. Something like that would make the combat so much better.

u/xenoalphan10 Dec 13 '25
I can agree but a frostpunk/tropico style battletech game where you rule your own world and stuff sounds fun as well.

u/deadbeatChimblr Dec 13 '25
omg a battletech anno
35
u/All_hail_bug_god Dec 13 '25
I've been wondering for years how they haven't made a fantasy anno. You start with the human farmers, they tech into dwarves with mines and stone and stuff, then you get the elves with the big spire towers, etc.
I think Anno on the whole works as an excuse to just watch your little ships move your little flavoured goods to your little towns.

hell yes. designing your own regiment style from army compositions down to lances customization. Play infantry focused like GDL or full size Zeta Battalion

Those kind of games would work so much better for 40k too, but they do not have the brand name like Total War.

Broken Arrow Battletech is the game I've been waiting for..and hopefully one that is programmed by a team that knows what it's doing.

I'd pay $80 CAD for a Warno style Battletech game, no questions asked. But Eugen probably wouldn't be interested.
Edit: Especially one set during the earlier eras like ACW, Reunification War, Age of War, etc.
3
u/infiltrator228 Dec 13 '25
There is a Star Wars mod for Warno now (with walkers). So Battletech wouldn't be too hard.
5
u/joepez Dec 13 '25
So MegaMek?
It’s not a graphical powerhouse but it does have combined arms and strategic layer. You get pseudo roll playing.
3
u/Captain_Slime Dec 13 '25
Megamek does its best to recreate the tabletop rules. What I want is a real time game that takes inspiration but introduces its own rules to make it fit the format better.
5
u/TamaDarya Dec 13 '25
Let's be honest, the graphics are an important aspect. The whole hobby is based around painting cool looking miniatures, I want to see cool mechs blowing shit up, not play an excel spreadsheet with some basic sprites.

Potentially you could have a conversion of Alpha Strike with mass infantry, vehicles, air support and Mechs. But even something like Empire at War would work better than Total War
14
u/SendarSlayer Dec 13 '25
Alpha Strike is the solo unit conversion of Battleforce, IIRC. Which has each "Unit" as a lance or greater. So like... Battletech already has it ready!
6
u/Rivetmuncher Dec 13 '25
I was going to remark that a small-unit game on Total War's combat systems could still be pretty damn interesting. Then I remembered Wargame and its spinoffs exist.
Empire at War is cool and all, but scale aside, I'd take it as more or less a blueprint of what not to adapt into a Battletech map painter.
4
u/Funnybones242 Dec 13 '25
The thing is, stuff like that could work but at that point, is it even worth calling it a total war game?
9
u/Blinauljap Dec 13 '25
Honestly a total war stack could wotk if you actually include combines arms to support mechs. Take a lance. Add in squads of tanks and AA. Now some command vehocles, ASF and Resupply craft. Now heap in some technicals and a smorgasboard of infantry and you have yourself an army.
3
u/Funnybones242 Dec 13 '25
I just dont think total war works all that great with automatic guns, artillery of the sorts, Im sure the game would work, I just don't see it really as a total war game.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Icy-Ad29 Dec 13 '25 edited Dec 13 '25
Total War Wahammer already has automatic guns and flamethrowers (ratlings, vampire coast), cannons (all over the place), and even artillery (mortars and such.) as well as single large units that take a ton of damage to drop, alongside moderate health and damage vehicles, and mass infantry. It works pretty well, actually... What matters more, is how it gets balanced.
3
u/Funnybones242 Dec 13 '25
Yes, but you still have your traditional formations, unit facings, bows swords etc. Cannons and single units work well as they have to aim and pivot. Are they going to make space marines have to walk in lines and face towards the enemy they are shooting at, or will it be like DOW where they can move an shoot in all directions
4
u/Icy-Ad29 Dec 13 '25
Many of the units that fit the description above already have all-around fire and don't need to pivot, except to bring main weapon to bear (if even then)... which kinda fits perfectly with battletech.... And those infantry formations would very much still work with battletech infantry. Instead of being purely melee turning to engage those fighting from behind/side. You set a small percentage of the units to do so at range. They still get the morale penalties, and are far less effective than if directly facing... and the tanks would match up to the tanks we have just fine.

u/ROFLtheWAFL Dec 13 '25
Honestly, I doubt it's going to be THAT much different from the TW: Warhammer series. WH: 40K is the one well known sci-fi series with armored vehicles and aircraft and automatic weaponry that still feels right to have big blocks of dudes moving in close formations.
Like, you wouldn't really expect CA to do something like Total War: WW2 or Total War: Cold War because modern infantry tactics don't involve blocks of dudes anymore.
3
u/SovKom98 Dec 13 '25
CA is claiming the new engine will let them do alot of new stuff and is hyping it up. We will see it's limitations the close we get closer to release we get but i think it's fine to have our expectations high for now.
26
7
u/phantam Dec 13 '25
It's not that contrary given they made the Strategic Battleforce and Abstract Combat system for formation based hex and counter wargame with brigade level clashes in Battletech's setting. A wargame style rts is a better fit but Battletech has plenty of large scope fights.
11
u/findername Last of the LAM pilots Dec 13 '25

15
u/Arcon1337 Dec 13 '25
Succession wars would be a perfect staging ground to take advantage of mass scale combat for mechs. I'd love to see that explored more in games. Could be a spectacle to see.
5
u/gunawa Dec 13 '25
Not if they focus on the major historical events, the amaris civil war, the clan invasion etc. maybe even just the earlier succession wars could be a solid total war game.
Also: I do almost anything for a total war battle tech game I love both IPs so much! I'm assuming this post is referring to total war warhammer 40k. I'm gonna play the shit out of that game!

Battletech and its tradition of limited warfare is sort of contrary to Total War's scope and style
I disagree, I think that the limitations of warfare are a product of the transportation bottleneck. And it would be pretty easy to represent that in the TW model, instead of a hero who has X number of army slots you have a jumpship which has X number of collars, into which you can load varying types of DS that would determine the size of your army.

u/flipdark9511 Dec 13 '25
I think a Paradox game like Stellaris or Hearts of Iron would be more fitting.
I may or may not be biased due to experimenting with a BattleTech conversion for Europa Universalis V.

u/theACEbabana House Arano Loyalist Dec 13 '25
Stellaris is too focused on the naval. And I like HOI, but there’s something that could go more granular insofar as nation development beyond constructing factories.
Victoria stands out to me as the basis for a BattleTech game given the focus on economic and societal development. I just wish 3 had a more robust military/war segment.

Big formations at the scale of Warhammer don't make any sense here. Most Battletech battles are very conventionally sized, and the ritualistic "dueling" kinda warfare means the vast majority of battles are even smaller than a real life comparison.
So a total war would be sacrificing any gameplay depth (and BT is already generally a pretty shallow game) for big formations battles that you wouldn't really have much control over and wouldn't really make sense outside of the select enormous battles like Tukayyid or the deployment of an entire RCT.

2

:(
Basically, Microsoft leased out the BT IP license to HBS for cheap because they were just sitting on it and nothing had been made for a while. Paradox acquired HBS's publishing rights afterwards.
Then HBS BT became pretty popular, and HBS planned to do a sequel, but when Paradox went back to Microsoft, they (IIRC) at minimum tripled the price of the IP rights because they saw how popular the first one was.
Paradox said no, and thus the fans got screwed.

War Game Red Dragon, or WarNo, would be a much better method to really simulate the combined arms and extreme value of losing a mech (having one mech at 40k points for a Medium Mech, or having a whole platoon of tanks and ASF fighters for support and Infantry for swarming? The decisions suddenly become more dire.

Thinking about it for a few minutes, I think there just might be something there. If you replaced the typical massed units of TW with Battletech lances and similar-scale combined arms, and scale the units/maps to accomodate similar ranges to MW5, I think it would be really interesting and might capture company+ level combat much better than MW5 or the HBS Battletech games.
