fan interference 'almost' robs a home run, much in the way an easy catch on the warning track 'almost' robs a homer. but not really

It didn't almost rob Volpe of a HR - it wasn't going out. All it did was get the spectator kicked out. Nothing else changed.

Yes, which is what he says in the video.

It's Reddit. Nobody watches videos or reads articles.

The clickbait thumbnail seems to imply otherwise

Just so you know, this video has multiple titles and thumnails. The one OP got (and used to post here), and "Manager is confused about this playoff replay review, a breakdown" (the thumbnail for this one has the Rays' manager and an ump)

They are obviously testing to see which one would yield more clicks. It sucks, but this is what YouTube promotes. Which title sounds more controversial (and thus appealing) to a casual watcher even if it is a rhetorical? The one I got, or the one OP got?

YT are now even testing out a feature for A/B on actual videos. If we both click into a video, you may see a different video than I did. This video goes over it

That’s the thing about reading and watching things, you can find out what they say instead of being immediately outraged. And, we know what happened, the series is over, the Yankees did not tie this game on an Anthony Volpe home run.

I actually disagree. Clickbait titles are exactly meant to mislead you and absolutely should not be ignored and forgiven even if the actual content ends up accurate. It's bad to do that, and indicts the whole project. The title and thumbnail ARE outrageous on their own terms, and actually even worse because we know the author knows better.

We know what happened, we are in the baseball sub, no shit, but some rando on YouTube may not.

Normally I’d agree, but I don’t think that’s the case here. The thumbnail presents a question and the video answers that question. Yes, it’s designed to drive traffic, but it also comes across as more of a thesis than a statement.

I mean “Fan robs a home run?” is not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, a rhetorical question answered plainly and immediately after the event occurs in the video, as a matter of fact you could interpret it as a rhetorical question leaning toward the answer of “no, the umps got this right” which is in fact what happened — and again, we know what happened. I guess he could have titled it “Volpe - Fan Interference on called home run video.” If you’re watching this video, it’s a safe assumption that you have some awareness of what happened, i.e. there’s no controversy about this call and the consensus belief is it is correct. The title wasn’t “Umps rob Volpe of home run?” I don’t know if it’s a big deal if some rando comes across a 13 min baseball youtuber’s breakdown, I sincerely doubt non-baseball fans are watching that regardless.

“Roof robs Padres of home run?” Is that a clickbait title? Because that was an out, clearly and succinctly according to the ground rules and call. I wouldn’t say that would be a hypothetically misleading title.

I get what you’re saying, and while I could say, “this is the world we live in you might as well argue with the tide” - I think this is not particularly egregious.

As an aside, if you watch the video, the slow motion replay, it looks a little closer than I thought at first glance.

Question marks, what do they mean???

2

u/RedAlkaline New York Mets • Seattle Mariners 1d ago

I think it's referring to the fan "stealing" a home run, as in robbing it from the field of play

u/AbraxasWasADragon New York Mets 1d ago

He might coulda been on third

u/Rush_Clasic 1d ago

If the MLB actually cares about fan intereference, shouldn't they just create a thicker barrier between the stands and the field?

They want to sell tickets more.

I recommend execution via firing squad of all fans involved in any interference during the 7th inning stretch. If it happens after the 7th inning stretch they get fired off with any post game fireworks.

I loved the well-deserved camera operator shoutout almost as much as I loved the headshakes of shame given to the guy as he was being escorted away.

I loved the headshakes of shame given to the guy as he was being escorted away.

The guy in green is my spirit animal. Dude had the 'disappointed dad' look at max level

These titles are not remotely based in reality it was never going out.

Great video and break-down, these comments are just loser redditors.

Mandatory discussion of how this is long overdue revenge for Jeffrey Maier.

u/CornDoggyStyle Washington Nationals • Brewers Bandwagon 1d ago

This isn't revenge. This was the correct call and outcome. Revenge will be when a fan robs an out from a yankees outfielder in the playoffs and the umps make a bad call and rule it as a HR.

Alright cool I guess we’re even now.

Why would Sonny Grays dirty neck do this?

-4

u/cadaverous_mob New York Mets 1d ago

I don’t need a “breakdown” I can simply just watch a replay

u/Amanitas 1d ago

I dunno - to me it was worth it for that minute and a half or so on camera work alone. incredible stuff.

Yeah, I hadn’t seen the popcorn and the security footage in the stands. The popcorn was hilarious, reminds me of “here comes the pizza” in Boston

TBF Jomboy, the Yankee fan, has a lot of free time now.

3

u/PattyMac811 New York Yankees 1d ago

Cool man

-1

u/deahoidar 1d ago

Homboy - this would not have been a home run if the fan was there or not

Gaslighting

9

u/scrodytheroadie New York Yankees 1d ago

That’s literally the conclusion he comes to in the video.

3

u/PattyMac811 New York Yankees 1d ago

The title was written by a social media editor, intentionally designed to annoy you and get people to click on the video.

Jomboy himself says in the video that the umpires got the call correct.

-6

u/nexustk5 Boston Red Sox 1d ago

Jomboy is getting to be more and more a homer with his vids, it's a shame.

7

u/BdaMann New York Yankees 1d ago

Jomboy is pretty critical of the team.

10

u/scrodytheroadie New York Yankees 1d ago

First of all, he’s a Yankees fan. I don’t know why people think he needs to be impartial for some reason. Is he the only content creator who lets his fandom be known?

Second of all, what exactly is homer about this video?

3

u/1egg40eggs 1d ago

I wish Jomboy would be more like Jared Carrabis and the Section10 guys and keep things objective like when calling opposing players dogshit humans

6

u/Queen-Makoto Seattle Mariners 1d ago

If you've watched any of his Yankees content he doesn't coddle the Yankees at all. Looking like a disappointed dad the whole time with plenty od criticism
