- RECOMMENDATION Spotted one of my favs Banksia robur in Hervey Bay QLD

Fun fact: Each "flower" is actually a dense spike made of hundreds or even thousands of individual tiny flowers packed along a woody axis. A single bull banksia head can hold over 6,000 flowers.

Grevilleas are absolutely loaded with flowers right now

The honeyeaters have been going off, bees all over it too. Mine's been in about three years and this is the best flowering season yet, not sure if it's finally established properly or just a good year for it. Always worth it this time of year even when the rest of the garden is looking a bit tired.

Id my plant

Hi,
Im in Perth
These were at my house when we bought it a year ago. I think they recently planted them, so they might be one year old. So far, no flowers, just a lot of growing. I am creating a waterwise garden mostly made of Australian natives. And I would like to know which type of plant these are, as they are close to a pipe, and if they are native so if not Ill love them elsewhere and use the space to plant something native.

Does my Bottle Brush tree have enough room to grow as a screening tree?

Location: Melbourne

The garden bed is 650mm from the fence with the Callistemon planted in the middle.

Planted when I first landscaped the backyard a few years ago and it seems to be happy and healthy (for now).

I'm planning on re-doing some of my previous landscaping and was hopeful of keeping this bottle brush. Relocating is unlikely to be a viable option as natives don't like their roots disturbed (as far as I'm aware). However I want to create an effective screen.

The rear of the fence is located to the west, so the tree gets sun from its right side (North) for most of the day.

Many thanks!

I was browsing tubestock at bunnings about a year ago, and came across this unfamiliar plant. The tag didnt have any nursery branding, or many details. I figured "Hey, sounds pretty unique... better get 3 of them just in case they have unusual growth requirements"

All 3 survived, and are now about 1 meter high. They started blooming a month ago, and havent stopped since.

i didnt realize how rare it was when i bought it.

What's this on my Acacia Cognata mini cog?

Am in Melbourne and have a mini cog which is 3-4 years old and looks healthy but i was giving it a light prune today when I noticed these clusters of round white larvae looking things on a couple of the internal stems. They're not really visible from the outside - I had to push my phone into the plant interior to take these photos. Can you let me know what they are, if I should be worried and if so how to treat?

- RECOMMENDATION Seeking shrub recommendations for under black tea tree

Post image
6 Upvotes

This spot I think could do with a shrub, it’s underneath the canopy of a black tea tree.

Thinking max 1.5-2m (to around the window sill). It has lots of groundcovers already.

Eastern facing garden bed

Part shade, clay loamy soil

Mid north NSW

Prefer something that flowers or interesting texture!

Any recommendations / your favourites?

Hi all, hoping for help to id this eucalyptus, it’s maybe 5 metres tall but no idea of age or how well it’s enjoying the conditions.

It doesn’t seem particularly healthy, the bark on fresh-ish growth is smoother than the trunk but not proper smooth. I haven’t seen the flowers.

Help me choose some narrow screening plants

Thumbnail

Hello, complete gardening novice here who would love some help choosing some native plants for this corner of our recently landscaped yard 🙂

As you can see, the house on the rear boundary is close and we’d like some narrow growing screening plants to around 3m to add privacy. Garden bed here is around 60cm wide or 85cm from edging to fence line with the row of sleepers. I know about straight & narrow Lilly pillies but ideally I’d like a softer screen rather than a dense hedge. And something that isn’t going to cause a nuisance for the neighbours.

Would also love recommendations for a feature tree in the corner and beside the sandpit on the side boundary. The neighbour’s tree on the side is quite lovely so I wouldn’t want to screen that area to the same height as the rear.

Our existing tree is a Lilly pilly resilience, so potentially tying in some other glossy plants would look nice. I like the look of Fraser Island/K’gari Apple trees and native gardenias, but really flying blind here.

Location is Brisbane

Thank you so very much!

how resilient and awesome are native plants!

This one was basically bare sticks when I saved it from the tubestock nursery for free, gave it a cut back and it’s thriving now!

She’s got her first flowers too 💜🙌

Native or weed? I’ve tried googling the differences and photos but maybe because it’s Friday evening and I *want* it to be the native, I’m struggling to tell the difference.

found in Newcastle NSW, not near the beach.

Is this tree dying / what tree is it?

Thumbnail

We moved into our new home (Melbourne) last week and are unsure about this tree.

During the inspections over winter it was completely bare. After settlement and since moving in we’ve noticed that leaves have only grown back to less than half of it, with all furthest branches completely bare.

For starters what tree is it? And is it healthy? Given we’re in mid October I’d have thought the leaves would have all come back now?

Is there any remedies I should under take? E.g. trimming back the dead parts?

Thanks ina dance

Hibbertia genus -- brightness around the garden

Starting to see the various hibbertias I've planted start to open their blooms to the world. A plant one see in the bush in SE Oz, though less so in the standard nursery spaces. Always joyful to me to see the mass bright yellow blooms.

For me they cope well in sun and shade and frost, less so to kangaroo tromping.

Help with red flowering gum

Post image
18 Upvotes

Please help. I planted this red flowering gum in my south facing yard in Brisbane 5 days ago. I used native potting mix and was careful not to disturb the roots when planting. I’ve been watering it every morning but it’s still declining. I’m desperate to save it. Is there any hope?
