Is this allowed?

My son LOVES blippi and meekah. My husband and I wanted to be them for Halloween, I am white and Meekah is black. I wanted to crimp my hair similar to hers for similar aesthetic but don’t want to be offensive. Other than that, I would just wear her shirt, jeans, have the yellow headband and the bag that she has. Thanks

Vent Just need to vent

Why is it that when you give a white person straight facts, actual evidence, or check them ( in an educated way). They just start saying irrelevant, or just plain stupid stuff. That has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Sorry just had to vent...

General Question What do you think of eliminativism?

In my understanding, race eliminativism is the theory that as long as we use race to identify ourselves, we are allowing racial structures to restrict our behaviours and the systems to continue to catergorise and divide us, not just as black people but as people. The idea is the identity we have spent generations fortifying in protection, actually isolates us and limits access to equality.

I live in London and I think it's worth noting that I am aware that racism in the US is different.

I guess what I'm further pondering, is the more it is agreed that there is a way to 'act black' the more the systems win. I felt challenged by eliminativism when I first heard it. But I in leaning further into anti-essentialism [or even existentialism] I'm realising there's a lot more to it that I initially thought. I see a lot of our community confusing facts with assumptions in the sense that we become obsessed with the racism we have personally experienced and as a trauma response allow it to control our present and our future. Many become unable to live life as 'people' and become so fixated on living as 'black people'. Trying to preemptively shield ourselves from racism in situations where it hasn't yet happened and worse, over stating the harm of situations assuming we were treated some way because of our race. I'm not talking about how this affects society or even the community as a whole, but how it influences the individuals' wellbeing and quality of life.

If race has no essential basis and was constructed purely to subordinate, society should eliminate the concept of race entirely.

❗I have a crush on a person who has said a racial slur before, and i dont know what to do

I don't know the exact timeline since my mind has been such a mess lately cus of this but all this takes place sometime between the 6th (Tuesday) and present day, the 12th.

Basically i met this guy, we'll call him Jest, through my friend (we'll call them Denise) and we hung out and it was absolutely amazing. I immediately fell for Jest like it was love at first sight. I loved everything about him, he is genuinely just perfect, my exact type. And we had a few bonding moments that really make me when happy thinking about it. But only a few days later, he ends up coming clean about his last and telling my friend Denise that 3-4 months ago, he was in a very bad friend group and ended up saying the n word a few times. (He's Filipino and Native) He explained that he was in a very very bad mental state and he got roped in with the wrong people but he completely regrets it now and he knows so much better and he's insanely remorseful about it but he wanted to come clean and start telling people because he cares about how important that part of his past is. Now Denise isn't really sure what to do because on one hand, Jest is in fact a much better person now and he is remorseful, but on the other hand, he still said the n word like, pretty recently.

So naturally I'm freaking out too bc im like. Insanely in love with this guy. And Denise is still trying to figure out if they are gonna drop him or not. Eventually I do think they are gonna stop being friends with him because in the alt scene that we're in, stuff like this doesn't fly at all and you will geneuinly be blacklisted from everything if your hanging out with somebody who used to be racist, even if they have in fact changed.

And im like, in the middle of this just freaking out sosoooooooo bad cus I still REALLY like this guy and I hate the fact that I do. Cus I do want to hate him for his past and stuff and in a way I definitely do but at the same time I can't bring myself to not like him anymore. I believe that he has truly changed but I know other people won't see it like that and that's what I'm mostly scared of. Cus I don't make many friends in the scene, and if im friends with Jest I know thats only gonna make ppl dislike me. But again, I still, REALLY, like him. Idk what to do and I'm just so stressed.

Honestly everything about this situation hurts so much. I think the fear that I might not ever be able to see him or talk to him hurts a lot, but the chance that I could lose like my closest friends because of it hurts a bit more. I do feel guilty for still loving smby who used to be racist, and that genuinely does make me feel like shit. I don't really know how to feel because I do believe that he has changed but I know that other people wont see it like that. Also another thing thats upsetting is that I'm genuinely like not even good friends with Jest like at all 😭😭 We met briefly once, and hung out once for like maybe 6 hours but we've never even texted. I don't even understand why I'm so attached to Jest to be honest, it's really weird, I know.

An honorable mention is that we are all within the age of 14-16. Any opinions or advice would be MUCH appreciated. I've been so stressed lately I can't even eat without feeling insanely nauseous and it's been affecting me physically really bad.

Side note: Conflict is more so the fact that I have to make a decision to either drop him or keep my friends. People are quite snippy when it comes to people with a bad past, no matter how much they've changed. Theres also the moral dilemma of being in love with somebody who has a past like that. Since being racist goes directly against all my moral standpoints, yk?

Are finger waves cultural appropriation

Just buzzed my hair and looking for ways to style it while growing it out.

whenever i look up videos on tik tok about this it is mostly just other white women having a debate with themselves about the legitimacy of their historical claims over finger waves.

i just want to know, if you as a black woman saw me out in public wearing finger waves, would it make you feel weird?

I obviously think it’s a cute hairstyle but if it is of any cultural significance to anyone i’m not going to go out of my way to wear it.

General Question Did you grow up learning about Divine 9 organizations, or did you learn in college?

Context: I am a first-gen student interested in joining a D9 org, and my parents refuse to financially support me because they say it is demonic. I only learned about the orgs in college, but I have a lot of respect for them. I just wish I learned sooner so I could have saved some money up to cover my fees.

“so im writing a book…” Asking for advice on writing characters of color respectfully

Hi everyone! I'm working on a personal writing project and want to include two characters of color. I want to represent them respectfully and avoid harmful stereotypes.

I'd love to hear what you enjoy seeing in characters who share your background, as well as common stereotypes or writing mistakes you're tired of seeing in media.

I'm here to learn and listen, and I understand that everyone's experiences and opinions are different. No one is obligated to answer, but I'd really appreciate any advice. Thank you! ❤️

Halloween

My sister and I are trying to figure out what to wear for Halloween, and I came up with the idea of dressing up as Stack and Smoke, the brothers from Sinners. I absolutely LOVE the film and have watched it a looooot of times, so I thought it would be such a cool costume idea! Buuuut, I’m a little worried that it might come across as disrespectful since we’re white and the film explores themes of Black identity, cultural heritage, and the Black experience. I genuinely love and appreciate the film, and the last thing I’d want is to unintentionally offend anyone or come across as insensitive. So I wanted to ask: do you think it would be okay for us to dress up as them for Halloween, or would it be better to look for a different costume idea?

General Question I called out my friends for using the N word in TTRPG

This isn't a question on whether it's ok to use it or not, mostly just if I my response to the situation was improper. Hope that's ok with the community rules

The title says it all mostly. I'm so unsure if what I did was too much but they got really upset with me for saying that they shouldn't do that. This specific friend group is almost entirely white. They told me I couldn't speak on behalf of black people since I'm "just as white as they are" and I contested that they can't reclaim those slurs when we're in settings with just white people, even if it's for the sake of "social realism" in roleplay. They also said that it's no different when a white actor says the N word in a movie. I don't think I agree with that premise, but I didn't know what else to say. I told them it was weird and not their place to determine whether it was ok or not to use it so therefore they shouldn't use it at all. They got really upset with me

Was I overreacting? I also have autism so I sometimes struggle with telling apart reasonably calling out bad behavior or just being the "careful"/"too woke" friend. I thought it would be better to ask black people instead of confiding in another friend that may be biased towards the other people in that friend group. What can I do to be better at calling out bad behavior when I see it?

Dark things heat up faster in the sun. A black car turns into an oven in 30 mins but a white one is fine. Even fences are painted white or silver so you dont burn your hands. So why do dark skinned people live in the South and white people in the North?

It should have been the other way around! I tried googling it. They mumble something about melanin, but even science admits the physics logic is ironclad. This should NOT have happened. Articles just excuse it like "well, nature didn't have the right materials"... Really?

Honestly, it feels like a prank! I just picture God and Charles Darwin sitting up there together, trolling us. They hardcoded this glitch into the matrix just to laugh at us trying to explain it.

I’d say they can keep their racist tasteless food to themselves. We got the real soul cooking in our community and also Native American food and culture is just better.

General Question What makeup products/colors will work with her skin tone?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi!

I picked up this Addy (American Girl) from Goodwill. She was in pretty rough shape - obviously well-loved and frequently played with. I'm a big AG person, and I am working on restoring/refurbishing her as a Christmas gift for a friend who I know always wanted dolls as a kid, but never had any.

So far, I've re-strung the limbs and cleaned the body, replaced her eyes, and replaced her wig. Now, I would like to repaint her face, because in the process of removing pen/marker from her face, some of the original paint came off.

The problem: I am white. Fluourescently pale.

I considered posting in the AG subreddit, but I'm not positive what the demographic is in that sub, and I would like to take the advice of people who look like Addy to get her looking her best. I am very emotionally invested in this refurbishment because this friend means a lot to me. She's very into makeup and fashion, so I'd like the doll's makeup to reflect that as well. But, I also want this to be a surprise. I HAVE, however, gotten a good look at some of her makeup. Her skin tone is darker than the doll's, so I'm wondering if these product colors will translate well to the lighter tone of the doll:

Lipstick: Juvia's Place - Nubian Earth Matte Lipstick (Nile).

Blush: Mented - Berried Away

Eyeshadow: Mented - Every Night palette

If these shades won't work as well on the doll, are there any specific suggestions y'all might have that I can reference for color-matching my paint?

“so im writing a book…” Can I even write this book idea as a non-black author

Hello! For context I am a 24 year old white man from suburban Minnesota who is a very avid lover of black history and the history of pre and post civil war America. For a long time I’ve wanted to write a story about cowboy monster hunters who hunt down supernatural creatures within a western story however, I do not wish to mince words and hide the African American experience during those times. I want to actively explore the “unspoken history” of how America created a system in which human beings were enslaved and died in captivity simply because of their race because even as a Minnesotan (a Union State) I learned next to nothing about just how bad it was for African Americans during that period in history.

Now getting onto the book idea. I want to write a story about a young slave boy who is owned by a Southern Slave Owning vampire. The slave boy escapes his captivity and runs into two monster hunters. One is a black woman born in Minnesota and never experienced slavery firsthand (yet of course has experienced her own challenges with racism in that era I do NOT wish to glorify the North as the North still created Jim Crow Laws and despite claiming it wanted black people free it still created systems in which racism can flourish) and her Mexican Husband who creates weapons for her.

I want the story to focus on the struggles all three of the characters have gone through while not just using those horrible experiences as “backstory” or “shock value.” My question is primarily “Can I, a white author write this story or is it best left in the hands of people of color.” As well as asking “if I can write this, what are some pitfalls to avoid/things to include to give a respectful portrayal of what happened to real life people.

“so im writing a book…” Video Game Protagonist Design

Post image
10 Upvotes

Not a book, but I'm in the very early stages of planning a video game (rpg/adventure). Right now I'm working on character designs and story, with eventual hopes of building a diverse team to work alongside. But, since I'm not there yet, I would love to hear from this community to make sure I'm on a good track.

My main ask is for any thoughts on this character's design (it's pretty sketchy right now, things like braids will be properly rendered in later stages). What's good, are there any glaring issues, etc. etc.? For one thing, I was wondering if the different hairstyles make sense. I've watched a couple videos on black character design lately, and I've tried to incorporate advice from them.

My follow up question is what sorts of things would you like to see from a game in this fashion?

General Question Do you ever worry that white people don’t see you as you see yourself?

’m “private school” black as many comedians would jokingly say. I also spent my formative years outside of the US. Often times in new spaces I wonder if people view me as just another black person no matter my upbringing, education level, or career. Is this common? Sometimes I feel the need to posture or make statements to present myself, but I’m learning that they probably don’t always land well and might result in people just viewing me as an asshole.
