Sci-Fi Updated question from earlier

I had made the mistake in my previous post here asking how an accretion disk would affect Earth, mistaking the term for an asteroid belt, the question still stands though, how would an asteroid belt affect life on Earth? What changes to Earth and the rest of the Solar System go through in order for Earth to stay as habitable as it is today? And the other question, how would a planet near Earth affect life on Earth? Using the second image as an example (Helldivers II), I’d like to know how a planet that close with or without an asteroid belt would affect life on Earth. For reference the story takes place in Western Europe, in the late 15th Century, so all of these changes made would need to barely affect life there except for a nice view. Thanks!

How does the sun flicker and then balloon to a massive size covering most of the sky and making it blindingly bright, as seen in these videos?

https://youtube.com/watch?v=XnCHtCUJwh4

you can watch on 2x speed if its too long but as we can see very early on in the video the sun balloons to, and does what i described in the title. this should be at an otherwise dark hour from the lighting when it doesn’t do that. the woman filming also at a bit past 5:00 mins in, turns the camera to herself and you can see the light illuminating off her in the same bursts. At 1:05 you can see it bouncing off a bald guy’s head. remember this should be at a dark hour

then i found another video at some buddhist temple in sri lanka that seems to be virtually the same as these two but combining the elements of the sun flickering and the nuclear bomb reminiscent bursts of yellow light in the evening sky for a few seconds:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=oiTFTOZAztE

it appears to be labeled as happening at 7 pm which in sri lanka is as dark as what most of us would liken to an hour or so later. some backstory WITH SOMETHING SIMILAR THAT HAPPENED DECADES BEFORE AT THE SAME SITE is: On July 4th, 1981 in Sri Lanka, President J.R. Jayewardene went to unveil the pinnacle (kotha) of the sacred Somawathiya Stupa temple in front of thousands of attendees

he was originally going to unveil the kotha from the ground using the traditional rope system

but upon his arrival at around 2:00 PM, a miraculous event occurred where the sun dimmed to resemble the moon and not hurt or strain one at all to stare at, the sky alternated between a flickering bright yellow so bright that it had the white robes of attendees appear yellow - and alternated with its regular shade another second with occasional longer “holds” where the sky would be fixed bright yellow for more solid seconds on end.

The President being deeply moved by the spectacle, he chose to discard the rope system and instead climbed a temporary workers' staircase to the very top of the stupa to uncover the pinnacle by hand

and then maybe my personal favorite:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=viQfAe-LOGI&list

skip to 5 minutes in and look at what happens in the sky. pretty similar. some backstory is apparently it was predicted by a kid who had a religious figure appear to him and tell him it would happen on that exact date. and then hundreds of thousands gathered to see it in “Sabane Grande”, Puerto Rico. you can read more abt it here:

https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/15/4/46

there were researchers there too and here’s a peer reviewed journal on it:

https://openurl.ebsco.com/EPDB%3Agcd%3A5%3A7965509/detailv2?sid=ebsco%3Aplink%3Acrawler-gcd&id=ebsco%3Agcd%3A11935309&crl=c&jrnl=0033362X&link_origin=www.google.com

ultimately the catholic church rejected it as authentic because administrators at the church in puerto rico it happened at were behaving sketchy.

any mechanisms to explain these? do we know?

(no intended proselytizing although these may look to have religious undertones, they’re contradictory religions anyway and i‘ve seen videos of such phenomena happening not in a religious context ill add later)

Astronomy How far can we actually see?

Sorry if asked before, but how far can we see in space?

I go outside at night, and look up how much Milky Way am I seeing?(with the exception of Andromeda)

I've seen a couple "This is all you see" but I dont know how accurate those are. So I guess yeah, how far do we see with just our eyes looking into space

Astronomy A free, open-source desktop app for JWST, Hubble, and Roman telescope data analysis, astrophotography, and image processing (No AI used in this post)

This might be a bit outside the usual scope of r/askastronomy , but I'd like to share a project I've been working on for the last months and ask for some feedback from people who know the science better than I do.

So just for context , i'm a software engineer who loves astronomy. I started building AstroBurst in Rust and Tauri with no big ambitions: I wanted a FITS reader and astrophotography app that could take advantage of Rust's parallelism and performance to handle large FITS files.

As I researched and learned more about astronomy (with help from AI for things outside my own field, which is computing), I ended up building a bit of everything: image viewing, processing, astrophotography, and scientific analysis.

It isn't perfect at everything. For astrophotography, it doesn't compete with PixInsight, which is far more complete. And my latests versions I've been focusing mostly on the scientific side.

I know CARTA and photutils already cover many of the things AstroBurst does, but I wanted to make something practical: you download an installer of about 10–20 MB, drag in a file or a folder (or select one), and start analyzing.

Since my background is in computing, I focused on the architecture, performance, and algorithms. I relied on AI to help me with the astronomy side (and with the frontend too, because I really dislike dealing with React components and CSS).

That's why I'd really appreciate feedback from people who know the science.

The areas I'd most like to have validated are things like spectroscopy, photometry, light curves, astrometry, and color calibration.

I'm especially interested in knowing whether the scientific results make sense and whether there are things I'm doing incorrectly from an astronomy perspective.

Learning astronomy

When I was 5, I wanted to be an astronaut; I had researched everything about our solar system. Whenever we had to pick a science project, I always picked something about the solar system. But as I grew older, my dreams changed, from astronaut to an actor, police officer, artist, architect, statistician, math professor, biologist, paleontologist, game developer, and many, many, many more. Now I have joined the Science Olympiad club, where I chose astronomy for my assessment. When I started studying astronomy, I realized how much I loved astronomy. I picked 2 books from my library: the first one, “Asimov on Astronomy,”  by Issac Asimov, and the second one, “Exploring the Solar System, Other Worlds,” By J.Kelly Beatty. I have only read Asimov on Astronomy so far, and I really love it is an amazing book(I am probably saying this because I have not read any books for a long time). I have just flipped through the other book’s pages. It also looks interesting, and I probably should read Exploring the Solar System, Other Worlds over Asimov on Astronomy since it will help me a lot.

But the point is that I want to learn astronomy, so any suggestions?

Could we launch a weather balloon into a gas giant's atmosphere to gather data about it?

Hi r/askastronomy, this dawned on me while watching Reed Trimmer footage in Isaias. Wouldn't weather balloons be super useful in the atmospheres of any of the gaseous planets?

What about releasing a collection of sensors similar to those used by storm chasers/meteorologists in supercells and tornados?

Thank you so much in advance. I'd really like to learn more about this.

Light questions (Science)?

I've been thinking about the properties of light. So is it true that everything we see is some amount of time in the past, no matter how insignificant the amount of time is? That really kinda blows my mind. To think that if you're standing five feet away from me, I'm seeing you as you were X amount of time in the past while someone a hundred yards away is seen X+Y amount of time in the past. I know some will find this elementary, but it boggles the mind. To know that if our telescopes can actually focus on the surface of a planet millions of light years away, we could witness the history of life begin that has already died after millions of years.

nah, I apologize for hurting feelings in my excitement and will just keep it to myself from now on since it was a breach of topic. Sorry that it broke rules.
