Unsolved Bought a Macbook and Applecare instore today. Got sus emails tonight

Post image

Today, I went to the apple store to pick up an order for a Macbook. While I was there, I signed up for AppleCare One, filling in my details on the staff members device.

A few hours later, I got these two emails from a random Gmail address. It was sent to the email address that is linked to my apple account, and the second email even included my full legal name that I had typed on the employee's device.

I think "recipe" is a typo for "receipt". I didn't have a physical receipt, since it was all done by email, but I'm confused and frankly a little disturbed about how my details were so easily compromised.

Obviously I won't be replying to the emails.

I'm intending to go back to the store or call them in the morning, but does anyone have any advice or guidance?

Hello. Apple Store Employee here.

I can’t speak to what happened, like at all. But as for the conversation that’s happening here, even if a receipt was printed from the store, it does not have any personal information on it.
It’s possible that this person saw your email over your shoulder or something like that, or overheard you giving it to an employee during the transaction.

I just wanted to offer a little peace of mind that there isn’t a receipt floating around with your email address or any other info on it.

Thank you, I thought that would be the case.

I typed my details on the employee device so it wasn't overheard, and it feels unlikely that someone could have been so close over my shoulder to see it and neither my wife or I noticed them there. Yet I can't think of a reasonable explanation otherwise.

The digital receipt I received by email did have my details on it, and was labelled as a duplicate receipt, but I see no reason why it would have been printed.

But with my full legal name and email address, neither of which are short and easy to remember the correct spelling for, I find it difficult to believe someone could have remembered that from just seeing it on a small screen over my shoulder.

when did that change? cause they did have your email and name at the top if you entered it in easy pay and it showed at the top when emailed or printed.

Did you give your info verbally?

If you did, sounds like someone in store overheard and is being a butthead with the info.

Nah, he clearly thought he was sooo clever and created that email for this project. I’d just pick one very specific thing to sign up for.

Talk to store. Block the email address and report phishing. Move on. Chances are more info has been leaked through your legit accounts to the entire dark web in the last year than got leaked to this idiot - regardless of how he picked up your info during the sale.

If you contact the store and explain they can check and see what happened, likely when you filled in the details the employee forgot to either untick or ticked the box that prints to the receipt printer and it was left sitting, possibly dangling under the table if it was one of them, some kid has found it and seen your name at the top of the receipt and then tried to extort you thinking that having the receipt means something. The store could check their cctv and see what happened as they will have the details to where it would have been printed and can check to see if someone has taken it. You could email the person back to tell them you're heading to the police(even if your not) and getting cctv from apple to see who it was, they haven't put much thought into this. They sound like a child or simple.

First rule of being safe

Never reply to scammer as it means your email address is active

Apple has a video retention policy for its stores of 30 days. They delete after thirty days or less, but it should be available for a couple of weeks, at least. If they won’t bother, file a police report. Law enforcement can request cctv footage from retailsecurity@apple.com. You need to be specific about the store and times, so capture the timeframe as exactly as you can before you go to the store or police.

Planning to go to the store and find out what happened today

If you’re going to go to the police, just do it. There’s no reason to warn anyone first. Also don’t make idle threats of it. View the source info of the email to get the IP it was sent from and bring it to the police if you want to report it. It’s likely a kid and he can learn what happens if you play around on the internet if the police choose to pursue it.

Former Apple employee here:

It happens sometimes (at least in my store) that was needed to print out a test receipt to check if a printer was working. Usually the test one is immediately trashed while collecting the “real” print, but sometimes you can find printout dangling from the tablet.

Not saying that’s okay or normal, but there’s a slight chance that someone grabbed the receipt

I’d honestly go back to the store, not sure if they can check security footage but maybe could be someone doing it on a regular basis

Someone simply found your receipt after you had left the store. Grabbed your contact details off it and emailed you.

Saw how much you spent...assumed you were rich...and stupidly tried their luck asking you to buy them something.

I didn't have a physical receipt though?

Exactly!

So the store printed a physical receipt and just left it lying around somewhere for a random to find?

Obviously, something along those lines.

Whoever served you probably got caught up and it slipped their mind.

They could have printed it, put it on the counter, easily gets blown to the floor, mixed up in other papers, someone picks up it later. Dude, have you never seen a receipt that wasn't yours?!

Just email them and ask them...mystery solved. Use a burner email account if you're worried.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility. Seems like you're overthinking it. If you have a better explanation, I'd love to hear it.

Even if a receipt had been printed and left, apple receipts don’t include any customer information.
