Official Important: Please read before requesting an identification or creating a post.

Important! Everyone should understand the argument against the transportation and rearing of exotics. I will urge everyone to read about it here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/antfarm/consequences-of-rearing-of-exotic-ant-species-t7500.html

For questions about ants, and identification, please ask in our discord server as response times may be quicker. We're always happy to help!: discord.gg/c7qCmfYqYZ

━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ Identification ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━

How to request an identification:

If possible, clearly focus pictures of the head, side, and top of the body to make identifying easier. What follows is the important information we need to know to help us to identify your ant.

FIRST-Where was it collected? Country and nearest city or town on a map (include location in the thread title), elevation if in a very mountainous area such as the Rockies, Alps, Himalayas, Andes.

SECOND-Habitat of collection, including nesting medium (wood, soil, leaves tied together with silk, etc.) and type of vegetation (forest, grassland, park/lawn/garden, desert).

THIRD-Coloration, hue, and pattern? Uniform?, Head darker? Gaster darker? Legs lighter or darker? Any spots? Also, shininess, dullness.

FOURTH-Distinguishing characteristics, such as one or two segments in waist; location, length, and orientation of any spines or bumps on the mid-portion of the body or waist; head shape, etc.

FIFTH-Length in millimeters. (Width is also helpful.) NO guessing! Stretch out a dead or chilled individual or several individuals of different sizes along with a millimeter rule. 16ths of an inch will do as a poor second to millimeters.

SIXTH-Anything else distinctive, such as odor, behavior, etc.

Tip #1: If you can take clear photographs of the ants up close, then please post them. This would help a lot.

Tip #2: For those who write anting journals, please put the exact location and dates in the thread titles like: Palm Spring, CA (4/10/2004).

Tip #3: If using videos, then please make sure that they are clear, close up, and stable (no shaky camera). Otherwise, they are useless.

Now, you can post your identification request in a new thread (not this one).

I found this in my backyard. A million ants and at least 50% of them have wings. My dogs seemed super interested in that area earlier and were digging in the dirt and now there’s a ton of ants that came out of the ground there. Also some of them are just perched at the top of grass blades?

Also there’s even more giant patches of them than I showed in the video

Over the last two days I’ve seen 2. Tonight, I’ve killed 10. Majority of them are flying.

They appear to be coming through the vents from my attic. I am guessing because of all the leaves that came down they are finding their way through the cracks. I got a new roof and gutters this year and I’m guessing it all needs to be sealed proper.

Should I call an exterminator? Any tips for where to start?

I must head home to get retrieval gear. Would it be worth coming back to potentially get a Queen? Now, my potential queen of these species still has her wings on. I'm thinking she may or may not have mated.

Update: I found a queen that is closer in colour to the drones, and much larger of course. However, I can only post 1 image per post for whatever reason.

Me he encontrado está hormiga caminando cerca del río, es una zona tropical, tenía la idea de que fuera una clase de poreninae pero no tengo claro de qué género.

I live in southern california and theres those red fire ants everywhere out here. Well after the rain we've been getting ive seen this one specific ant patrolling the same patch of dirt for two days alongside a couple of the normal red/fire ants and they're smaller then im use to seeing but this one is huge. Is it a queen? Why is its head black? Instead of all red like the others. Its hanging out with smaller red harvester ants in the sand if that helps.

So I noticed in my yard these ants were very active in one particular spot. I then noticed what I believe is a queen ant struggling to climb. Are the worker ants helping her climb or attacking her?

Caught this queen back in July in placer county California. Mid day on a hot day she was found on the ground. She’s recently had her first workers hatch an was wondering what her species is. ChatGPT said Camponotus modoc. But I figured I would ask people to just to double check. Let me know if you need more information on them

News Ant baits can drastically change colony behavior before ants die

A sudden increase in ants after baiting does not always mean the treatment failed. New research from the University of California, Riverside shows that poisoned Argentine ants may act strangely before they die.

The study, from the lab of UCR entomology professor Dong Hwan Choe, examined how invasive Argentine ants respond to two common bait toxicants.

The team found that thiamethoxam and boric acid both kill many worker ants, but they change colony behavior in very different ways. One sends ants roaming outside the nest. The other drives them inward, where they cluster tightly.
