Discussion 🗣️ Using AI for your game shows you don't care about it.

If you use AI in your video game, it shows you really only care about the money or fame, not the actual developing.

Saying this as a game dev myself, you can learn pixel art in under a week. It's NOT hard.

You can learn to make music in under a week. It's also not that hard.

Can't code? There's tons of free no-code game engines! You don't need to vibe code.

Even if you "only" use AI for the "art"/music, I won't play your game, because it implies that more of it was made using AI, and that you don't actually care about the game you're making.

If you're a dev and you find yourself not feeling passionate about the game you're developing enough to make your own art or music for it, make a game you'll actually like.

I used to be an AI bro, and I used to vibe code shit (embarrassing, I know. Luckily I never released any of the slop.) and I genuinely cannot remember what the game was about even though it was like, a year ago.

Why? Because I wasn't passionate about it. If I was, I would've learned to code, or used a no-code engine.

Discussion 🗣️ Why so many people underestimate AI

One of the common camps of people who are not AI are those who see AI as just a tool - and often not a very good one.

I think this is primarily to do with the human using AI rather than AI itself.

First, some people just don't update their knowledge in the face of changes, and have a poor memory. They both don't acknowledge improvements, nor have a mental timeline of how much progress AI has made in a few short years.

Second, and I think even more relevantly, most people don't have a real area of expertise that lets them.measure AI progress. Most people are not world leading mathematicians so they don't understand the validity or invalidity of AI progress in mathematics. They instead just make a ton of assumptions based on motivated reasoning to ignore claims, and of course are extremely willing to ignore experts - one thing AI has enabled in people is more dunning-kruger confident idiocy.

AI leverages and expands the capabilities of a skilled knowledge worker. It's impressive/scary what it can do. It is less, but still capable, when just asked to one shot things from scratch, so the AI naysayers who can only attempt one shitting their own poorly formed ideas, to which they get bad results, think that it's the fault of AI that they don't see results similar to what people claim AI can do. It's because of the old 'garbage in, garbage out' adage. Feed an AI garbage and...well you still get something better than what went in, but it won't be curing cancer just because you asked it to.

Unfortunately, I expect AI is going to degrade human capabilities as AI capabilities expand. We are in for a very scary, very near term set of problems at the rate the world is going.

AI "Art" 🖼️ One thing that bugs me about the AI art/writing/music conversation:

At some point, we are going to have to admit that latent individual talents exist, they vary wildly in degree and form, and they cannot be made accessible to people who do not have them.

A person who can't draw or paint or write or sing or produce music wants to be a creative artist. So they tell a computer to do it for them. We all recognize that, no, this does not count, they are not an artist. This is objective, indisputable.

But anti-ai people suggest an alternative: put in significant effort to get good at the given art form. For some reason this is a common sentiment among visual artists specifically, anyone can get better if they "pick up a pen and work really hard."

This is where you lose me. No, I do not think the average person can hustle grind-set their way to becoming a talented and successful artist. I think people who already have talent can improve greatly, but to a certain extent, these are things that you're born with, emergent personality traits.

I have spent considerable time in writing spaces, among other writers who write often and study writing, and I can tell you definitively: many of the people who have strong interest in writing and have been doing it for a long time are not particularly good at it. The same is true for music or painting. I've met aspiring filmmakers who just want to rip off A24, i've met aspiring musicians who just want to rip off Alex G, I would put these people in the same category as the fake AI artists.

I'm in a large-ish subreddit of aspiring professional writers. People who are trying to get books published. People who believe they are talented at writing and have something to offer. 99% of what gets posted in this subreddit is fantasy that's either a twilight ripoff, a hunger games ripoff, or a harry potter ripoff. Usually some combination of the three. These are people who read tons of books and write tons of words. They are well versed and well practiced.

Another common sentiment is that "art makes us human and our species has been doing it for thousands of years." This is true. But people have taken this to mean "every individual human should create art even if it's not good and even if they're not talented." I think it's hypocritical to express this latter statement, and then get mad at people using AI to make art.

EDIT: I feel like this may have gotten lost in my overall point, so just to be clear: I hate AI and I hate AI artists.

Hello! I am doing a project for school on the impact of AI on the anime gaming industry (Honkai star rail, Honkai Impact, Genshin, Wuthering waves, Zenless ect.)
And I need to gather stuff on how it’s impacted the games! I need your input ;
Any fanart you’ve seen that was ai or had been run through ai
People in the industry who’s image and voice were stolen
Any other stories of a similar Ilk you may have?

Thank you so much if you do comment on this (I am trying my best)
But please put the source if you have it so I can cross check it. (Yes I have to do that)

AI News 🗞️ AI Decompiling

• Upvotes

Let's get the lingo right ..executable is not a machine language.

Machine language runs on a computer under control of control registers which obey  instructions of a binary code… that is how binary computers work.

Decompiling  is also called reverse engineering which is not illegal but what you do with it maybe.   I have done a few.

The first step in reverse engineering a disassembler which is a computer program that translates binary code into a low-level assembler language. It used to be a standard tool of an assembler programmer..

Since none of you have done assembler or binary programming  it's not for  the faint-hearted ..

If you are skillful, which I was, you can get a good idea of what the binary code does…Run disassembler, few mods .. run assembler  . create a new binary  then go to jail.. It's a plain theft.

The competitor comes out with a new binary we reverse engineer and have a look. Some go further and get jailed..

A decompiler is an App  which produces compiler code from a binary.

Many compilers produce assembler code which is then assembled into a binary - its is not simple(LOL).

The old style  disassembler/decompiler  did not create comments.. It  did not make code readable..

I have not  used AI to decompile. I'm sure it will try to make code readable..

The difference between disassembler and decompiler  is  that  disassembler produces unbiased  1-1 binary translation  to an assembler code.

The decompiler does not as there are many ways to cook the chook and before AI it was useless to use beyond trying to understand the code. AI will create the most likely compiler code…

Of course you can modify the code and compile the new version and go to jail as it's a theft.

A skillful assembler programmer does use or needs a decompiler he/she will use disassembler.

Once again AI deskilled ‘hacking’ .. the true meaning of the original hacking was to hack(crack) the software which I used to do.

Who gets hurt .. small developers like me.. We can’t afford to sue for copyright and IP theft.

Who else will get hurt .. you .. cost of executables will rise  and more Apps will become web only.

Of course we can stop the whole sh.t show ..we can encrypt the binary  as we already do in gaming machines.. to stop hackers disabling the code and stealing the real money.

Dear AI Tech Bro don’t get excited, the solution is on the way.. to make executables safe again

AI "Art" 🖼️ Do I need to worry about AI in Endgame Encore or Doomsday?

Going to see Avengers Endgame Encore today. I know the directors have sang the praises of GenAI in the past and even used it for voice editing in one of their past movies. I just wanna know if the re-edited film has any AI slop in it. If it does, I can switch over to Digger and maybe steer clear of Doomsday.

Discussion 🗣️ The AI bros' "common-sense" idea that only the results have magical value for any given human activity outside of its social context, is actually called in more sophisticated circles "commodity fetishism", and is the result of being illiterate cattle with your soul defiled by capitalism

Isn't it remarkable how AI bros seem to lack any of the characteristics that define a full-fledged human being? How they don't seem to have any appreciation, nor understand why anyone else would have any appreciation, for human connection, the creative process, enjoying passions, and existing in a community with others? How they don't know anything about, nor care to, about any of the fields they make their flippant pronouncements about? How they pass condescending and self-assured judgments against every normal human being they see expressing a natural human reaction, while treating AI oligarchs with self-debasing sycophancy? All the while, despite being village idiots who believe Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are secretly communists who will take care of us just as soon as we lose all of our leverage against them, act like their beliefs are self-evident common sense, as if they arrived at them completely independently, and as if they themselves are glorified in the march of an unfeeling, uncaring machine over our human experience?

People have written about how these people don't seem to have souls, and in a very real way, this is functionally true. For these people, whatever human soul may be kicking and screaming and suffocating inside them, it has been effectively replaced in its role of generating and regulating their behavior with the antisoul of capital. These people see human beings and their experience not as the ultimate goal, but as an incidental factor in the real business, the proliferation and concentration of interchangeable commodities. The commodities have some magical, intrinsic value to them, in a vacuum. This explains why they don't understand why someone might like expressing themselves through the *making* of art, and having a connection with someone else through *their* art, more so than simply getting to put your name on and to consume so-called "art", so long as it is superficially identical. This is why they think they have an equal claim to credit for "art" they "prompted" as an actual artist has to art they struggled to create, they literally cannot see the fundamental difference between these two processes. This is why Peter Thiel seems excited about humanity being replaced with something else that is more efficient at reproducing, despite, ostensibly, being a human himself. This is why they don't see any problem with AI replacing themselves in their role as a parent -- where is a soul active there? This is why they have to resort to imaginary gotchas like a cancer cure that doesn't exist, isn't being made, and you won't be able to afford when you lose your job, to justify all of us being shuffled out of existence, because no normal human being likes what is *actually* happening in the real world right in front of their eyes.

It is truly a stretch to imagine how these people can maintain friends, relationships, a vibrant inner life with attitudes like these. I suspect that for many of them they simply don't, or their distasteful behavior has to be suppressed in their private life out of necessity. These people have turned themselves into fleshlights of capital. Though they are not capitalists themselves, they have a total form of the capitalist consciousness which is hegemonic in our society. All the descendant logic of profit accumulation is still in control here, and it presses on like a headless chicken into this new arena, even as the set of circumstances which gave rise to it become inapplicable -- even though in the scenario of all human labor being replaced, the notions of "profit" or "market" become meaningless, these notions still structure how these people consider this scenario. They don't feel hollow at the things we see, because they've already hollowed themselves out beforehand.

AI News 🗞️ Breaking news: Pro makes nonsense point because they can’t actually defend paying for this nonsense ‘art’

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

So the defending AI crowd brought up this BBC article. And instead of focusing on the obvious point of this nonsense costing the people of Scarborough money, they just go on a random tangent about the BBC. It isn’t perfect but that wasn’t the main point? And no-one in the comments is addressing the actual relevance to the sub. Just insulting the BBC. And hey, as a Brit, it isn’t perfect and is left-leaning at times, but it does a better bloody job at being factual than most newspapers and is still a good source of news (since education corresponds with leaning left and guess what the people at the BBC are).

And b) the fact that ’AI slop’ is on quotes means that they are quoting someone / multiple people from an interview later in the article because the whole bloody point of the headline is to inform you a) what and b) what people think c) an incentive to click before giving you the information. They we’re quoting people which is something they teach you when you are 8.

It’s just people being upset that the BBC is being neutral by not catering to them and then talking about an unrelated issue to ignore the actual point of the article.

Utter seagulls, honestly.

Discussion 🗣️ Being an antiai CS student

• Upvotes

Hi, i'm making this post mostly for seeking advice. I'm a computer science student, but also, ironically, deeply against generative ai, since i'm an artist too and have concerns regarding its ethical, environmental and cognitive impacts. I'm not saying it doesn't have its benefits, but i don't wanna use it the way it currently is, especially in coding, because i want to develop my problem-solving skills by myself.

However, everyone in my class uses it everytime without any concerns. I kinda feel isolated, like i'm the wrong one for constantly be thinking about all of the downsides of genAI. I know i'll probably be "forced" to use it to have a job because it's basically a requirement nowadays, but art and coding is all i know and love. I cannot help but feel guilty about knowing i'll need to use it despite its impacts. Is anyone in a similar position to me and/or have some advice? Thanks :)

(Sorry if there's some mistakes, english is not my first language)

Job Loss 🏚️ My coworker is secretly trying to replace me with AI

So I've been working at a mid-sized marketing agency as a copywriter for around 4 years, the work has generally been great aside constant unrealistic workloads which we've managed to deal with as a team one way or another throughout the years.

This morning, I woke up to an email from Management requesting an extra team meeting (on the weekend?? What?) with our team which is VERY unusual, and usually we never know what meetings are about until we go into them. the message everybody got this morning was "Team discussion: Addressing productivity expectations and Adaptability" along with other things I won't share. I need advice on how to handle this because I feel completely helpless and feel like I will lose my Job after whats been going on at my workplace the past two weeks.

Recently I trained someone who was previously at our company before (known to be extremely rude) I hadn't had much experiences with this person as they left around the same time I joined. Recently this same co worker who's only been with us for a couple months starts going on about "automating workflows" and "harnessing the next revolution" and we're all like what the fuck? When we brought on this person they sounded totally normal (beside the rumors about from our past experience with them) now all of a sudden they've turned into this weird corpo upper management type. It's total corpo-speak and our management does NOT sound like this it all.

This had been going on for weeks when one of my coworkers notifies another coworker of mine that when she goes out to eat with us he's logging into her computer (we have no idea how hes got access, she says she logs out at break). The worst part is we couldn't find ANYTHING that went wrong when we all went back to check, the work was totally normal. So we couldn't bring this to management because nothing had actually happened, so maybe he was logging into another computerwith his work account right? Just wait.

We starts getting emails from management that some of our part time girlies have to take some third party AI "upskilling" course WHICH LITERALLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR JOB!!! Keep in mind our management never sent messages like this before. Stuff like: "In order to stay in line with our commitment of company goals , we're announcing a commitment to innovation and efficiency.." so everybody in our group chat decides they should not take the course, and we went in to explain to management our reasons why (not me - but we viewed this as a threat to all of us). We also mentioned the computer issue and it was all shrugged off literally like nothing mattered.

Fast forward a week and we ALL start getting these emails from management (literally a small management team of like 2-3 people) and messages that we're having some sort of a "performance review" which we never had one of these before ever. That same day we're discussing this we come back early from lunch on purpose and he's literally on ALL of our computers. When we all go over to our computers all our work has been copied and uploaded into different places and theres AI programs and things we cant recognize on all of the computers. We called management immediately and was told it would be dealt with and we can leave work early today because everyone was so upset and angry over the fact that our stuff was being touched.

The next day we assume hes not in because why would we need to tell management to discipline him right? Well turns out when i get to work I get a text message that one of my girlies was told not to come in (performance review - which doesn't make ANY sense?? Keep in mind we KNOW our management and see them everyday) and there he is automating our fucking work with an AI program and one of those "AI work assistants" which happens to be on HER computer as well. I confront him and all I hear is "automating tasks blah blah blah you need to prepare for the future" crap.

Keep in mind these AI assistants suck! He's sitting there doing OUR work on OUR computers because the AIs literally can't do everything on their own. If they were going to introduce AI into our workplace why not teach us how to use them instead of getting a random junior employee WE TRAINED to do another job now he's doing OUR work which I'm sure 99% he cannot do properly.

At this point I am ready to quit because this was ridiculous that this was even allowed to get to this point. I called management and they said he had been given the task of automating our work (which was a promotion without any of our knowledge) turns out he was getting PAID to do this and they were all in on it. This can't be legal right??? Remember we have more seniority than him and its not even his job title or what we hired him for.

As im writing this some of our girls still aren't getting shifts 3-4 weeks out from now. Fortunately I have a guaranteed position and I was not ready to quit until I saw that the company who had contracted us had all of our work replaced and redone by what was clearly AI and not our work.

I see the writing on the wall and I don't know what I can do to keep my job/hours, I feel like they want to push everyone out and honestly this meeting is stressing me out so much. I feel completely exhausted and don't know how I can continue working here considering management is ENCOURAGING this.

Discussion 🗣️ This whole aiwars is stupid

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I feel like i need to post this somewhere (ignore the text in the other image). Listen we all know the ai wars one side against the other, both stupid idiots and im sick of it. So let me someone who used ai and someone who drew (albeit both very badly) ok so lets get on with. Time for the rant.

First im going over the ai side. They say that ai art is art and that it should be treated like that and they try to make points (some better then others) and either do make a somewhat good point or just fail. Most of the time they just plainly attack artists and anti ai's by making them into goblins or calling them inkcells (inkcells is lowkey creative) or just plain chuds, while making themselves either edgy boys or catgirls (congrats to the ones who dont). Now i hate this since it just makes them look stupid and insecure while giving anti ai's the upper hand. What also grinds my gears is when they act like they made it. No you didnt you prompted it you didnt waste that much time on it.

Now dont think that im just bashing on ai let me go and bash the anti ai's.

These guys while making good points either do it in a obnoxious way or be an asshole about it, but one thing about them makes my skin crawl. That being when they say ai shouldnt exist (again congrats to the ones who dont). Are they fucking stupid. Ai is a great tool that can benefit humans in a great way (yes the ai datacenters shouldnt be this big), especially creative people and artists (painters, programmers, animated shows and whatnot). Spider man across the spiderverse is just an amazing animated movie, but did you know that the people who made it also made an ai to draw the little sketch lines because doing that by hand would be tedious. Maybe you forgot about how ai can help programmers make placeholders or helping them find a problem in the code since the fucking proggraming software doesnt tell you. Bet you didnt. Like i said ai is a great tool that can benefit humanity. But it should be used as a tool.

Now for the last thing, yes i did use Ai for art. However i didnt say it was my art nor did i post it publicly. I made it as a joke for me and my friends.

In conclusion you can use Ai however you want im not telling you what you can and cant do. But please dont say its your art or that it takes skill. Sure prompting the perfect image can be tedious but youre not pouring in hours of work to create that. Have fun do what you want just please be smart and dont be an ass about it.

Btw i tried to post this in some of the ai and you can guess what happened
