[Tutorial] I made an auto Sample Selector Max4Live device for generating racks from sample packs in one click

Hey everyone!

I love making custom racks with specific sets of samples. It really helps me commit to a workflow, but setting them up involves a lot of tedious, repetitive work, so I rarely actually do it.

Since most sample packs include a one-shots folder with subfolders for each drum category, I figured I could automate most of the process with a Max for Live device.

It builds a Drum Rack with sample selectors for each category, so you can explore your samples in a rack instead of browsing through folders.

I use it for drums, but it should work with other collections of one-shots too.

It’s free, open source, and runs locally. Tested on Live 12.

Download: https://p2r.gushon.com/

Would love to hear how it works with your packs!

[Max for Live] Sampler w Fx!

Hey guys!

I'm finishing up a device inspired by Serato Sampler and Arcade.

A quick overview:

Drop in Sample. 3 slice modes, beats, transient, manual

(manual allows you to play the sample through and create chops as you press the next key)

Fx are programmed to black keys only allowing you to test out effects in real time. Halftime, Reverse, Gate, Delay, and Stutter. Reverb can also be turned on.

FX tab let's you adjust parameters.

Locks for each Fx allowing you to play with the effects turned on at all times.

Global buttons (when turned off) allows you to adjust effects per slice.

Pitching and slice pitching.

Randomize button to randomize slices and locks per slice if you want to lock one jn and keep randomizing.

Here's a picture of what it's looking like

Is there anything else you would want in a device like this? Would love your guys feedback!

[Tutorial] Ableton Move - newbie

I'm just about to sink into a purchase for the Ableton Move, but some things affect my decision to purchase.

  1. I'm using a macbook air (M1 model) that is quite dated. As it has limited space, I'm not sure if it can fit Ableton 12 Live Intro. If this is the only way to edit or function with the Ableton Move, then I'm screwed.
  2. I once used Novation Circuit Tracks, but I got bored with it. Is the Ableton Move similar to the Circuit Tracks? (or better?)
  3. Is it easy to use? I see that there is a screen on the Ableton (albeit small). Is it helpful?
  4. Is the Ableton Move easy to use on-the-fly? This is so that I can play it on my long bus rides.
  5. Is this for beginner with little or no knowledge of digital music?

Thank you all for your kindest advice. I know you may be biased towards Ableton, so I'm ready for that....

Thanks!!

[Question] How do I map different plugins to different regions/octaves on my midi keyboard?

Hey guys, I'm trying to do this thing where I want to play 4 plugins at one time, but instead of arming all the tracks and have them played over each other, I want one played in the lower octave, one in the mid, one in the mid high and one in the high. So that way I can combine them and play more than one instrument, but nothing overlayed. How do i do that?

[Question] Can I somehow "forward" Push behavior via Midi without having to resort to the "User Mode"?

This is my current situation https://imgur.com/a/13CDmM8

I'm talking about the 0 CHORDY MA group

The 'push' channel just get information from the Push and routes to the drum rack. This was made so I could use a custom scale turning the whole 8x8 grid into a sample pad. If I select the drum channel, 'push' will behave differently, so, that's why things are like that

The 'drum rack' channel has a rack, duh, with this instrument https://maxforlive.com/library/device/3050/clip-trigger mapped for each of the midi clips on the 'cardinal-vst' channel

The 'cardinal-vst' is the only instrument making sounds

My issue is that I have to select the 'push' channel to play the instrument, but I want to use the knobs to control the instrument rack macros

Initially I thought using a midi router would solve the issue, but I don't think what ableton push is sending is midi

Is this doable?

[Live Event] I'm ill.Gates and I'm Hosting 5 Free Classes This Week so: Here's a Blog With My Most Helpful Composition & Workflow Ideas. Enjoy!

Hi r/Ableton,

Ever notice remixing is 10x easier than writing new originals?

As you'll learn in I Can't Finish Songs Any Other Way Now there's a whooole production phase getting skipped and skipping 'Phase 3' is why people get stuck and give up on the WIPs. Boo!

Please share any composition or workflow ideas you find helpful, and don't be shy about asking questions. I'll come back to answer them all if you're patient.

Much love,

[Question] MacBook Pro headphone output disappears when unplugged from power-how do you handle this in Ableton?

I’m having trouble with Ableton and my Mac recognizing the headphone output when the laptop isn’t plugged in to power. It seems to happen at the macOS level too, not just Ableton but I’m hoping someone has run into this issue and solved it.
My setup:
14-inch MacBook Pro, M4 Pro
24 GB RAM
macOS Sequoia 15.7.4

It doesn’t happen immediately after unplugging it. But once the computer goes to sleep, if I open it back up, it no longer sees the headphones as an audio source and only plays things from the MacBook speakers.

[Tech Help Windows] UA Connect Plugins Install problem (I'm going to crash out..)

Ok guys this is a bit more complicated because I literally dont know where the problem is..

I wanted to download some plugins via the UA Connect app since it promises that its "super easy" to install and use plugins..

However there somehow is a "routing" problem with the install locations.. I got Ableton and the UA connect app installed on a 2nd SSD (D:\ so its not on C:\ where Windows is installed. Just in case this causes the problem, wich I cant test, since C:\ lacks of storage).

In the UA connect app it says my instruments are located in this path: D:\\Universal Audio\Plug-Ins\. Plot twist: That folder doesnt exist on D:\. (eventho the path must've been D:\\Ableton Live 11 Suite\UA Connect\ anyways because thats the path where UA Connect is installed but neither the folder nor the plugins are installed here.) The App said that the plugins are "installed" but I couldnt see if that was true, since I couldnt find the folder. So I uninstalled all plugins in the app and reinstalled UA Connect to see if that fixes the problem. But it doesnt. When I click on "Settings" in the app to see the routing it still says "D:\\Universal Audio\Plug-Ins\".

It rlly upsets me that I cant choose a specific folder where I want to install the plugins. I only can choose a harddrive and then UA connect somehow creates a folder that isnt even there...

I even uninstalled everything AGAIN, checked out Universal's official video for the UA Connect App on Youtube (where they even show that it rlly is easy to install and use plugins) and did everything step by step how they did it, but it doesnt work... They showed that you should see a folder in your Ableton "Plug-Ins" library that says "AUv2" but that folder doesnt show up when I search for it in Ableton..

As you can see this all doesnt rlly make sense right... Can you guys tell me what I'm doing wrong here and how I can fix this problem?...

[EDIT] SOLVED!

ok guys you wont believe it but I rawdogged it... I had some Plugins installed in Abletons VST3 Folder and I knew they worked perfectly fine because I used them in recent projects. So I just copied all Plugins from the UA Folder into the VST3 Folder and now all plugins work perfectly fine even if this folder doesnt match with the location in the UA Connect App...

[Performance] Holy Sh!T! ABLETON!

Some background on me. I'm a 52 year old dad. I have a basement full of Marshalls, grew up playing guitar and violin and the last time I "officially" recorded anything, it was on a cassette Tascam Portastudio in someone's garage.

For fun and to stay creative, I recently picked up a Roland MC101. It cost nothing and it's something to do in bed as I wind down. I spent about a week fiddling with it and (I'm sure) barely scratching the surface. I decided I needed a little keyboard for it and picked up a MPK Mini. It came with some software called "Ableton." I figured maybe that would be some fun and threw it on my computer. I launched it and it was a total mystery. This doesn't make either sense or music. Dumb! And why's everything so damn small? Where does the tape go? Just before uninstalling it and never looking at it again, I watched a 15 minute YouTube quick start tutorial.

Clips?? Scenes? That's a wild idea. I can fire stuff off and record it as I do? That's pretty cool. WAIT A MINUTE! I CAN PLUG THE MC101 INTO IT AND THE WHOLE THING WILL TALK TO EACH OTHER??!!? I CAN ADD MORE STUFF ONCE IT'S IN THERE? IT JUST KINDA KNOWS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AND TAKES CARE OF IT FOR YOU?!? WHAT?

2 Yuenglings and a shot of Jim Beam later, I whipped out this. Now, I know that as a "song" this is crap. But the ability to fire this off with a few things I built in the MC101, the fact that I can dump stuff into it and the fact that I can then add to it? This is totally mind blowing to me.

There's an $800 version??? Why? What the crap could it possible do more than the free version that I got with the $100 keyboard? 16 year old me would have sold my dog and my mother for something that did half of this. I did this from watching a 15 minute YouTube video. I can't even imagine what you can get this software to do if you spent a week, month or year messing with it.

Holy Crap!!! This is like making music on easy street! What do I do? Just keep fiddling with it?

[Question] Macbook pro m1 pro 32gb

I’m thinking about switching to this MacBook for music production, ko would this configuration be sufficient for handling large projects with over 20 plugins and 100 tracks? I already have an M4 Mac mini with 16GB of RAM, but it’s not convenient to carry around.

[Tutorial] Lufs too low

Hello, I’d like to know why I can’t get my LUFS up to -8. I make drum and bass with jump bass and lots of noise and horror-style sounds. I’d like to know what might be causing this. I’ve reset all my tracks to zero to redo the final mix, but I don’t know what else to do. When I get to the mastering stage, I still have this problem of the LUFS being too low. If you have any resources I could look into, that would be very kind of you. Thank you.

[Hardware] Launchkey mini MK4 sequencer issues with playback

I have a brand new Novation Launchkey mini MK4 that I'm using with Ableton and I'm just going through figuring out all the different features. I'm trying to use the sequencer to program drums however I'm having an issue so far. Once I've selected my drum on the keyboard and then hit the pad to program it, the pad lights up and saves the step, but I don't get any playback automatically. I have to press the play button for playback, and have to set a one-bar loop for it to repeat. I've looked at a couple of different tutorials and I can't see what I'm missing. I've got the latest firmware, have the launchkey mini MK4 set as the control surface, and have selected track and remote in the input and output ports

[Max for Live] Bypass Ableton’s midi routing

I’ve been working on a Max for Live device called midihub to handle more complex MIDI routing, and I wanted to share it here.

It has 5 input slots. For each slot, you can select any physical MIDI port or the track’s input, and filter by a specific channel or allow all. If you need to let exactly two specific channels through from one controller, you can just assign that device to two separate slots (or more).

For the output, you can route the signal to the current track, to external MIDI ports (with the option to remap the output channel), or to 5 internal buses (it comes with a separate Bus Receiver device to pick up the signal on other tracks).

The backend is built on the Node.js midi package. The main benefit of this is that hardware-to-hardware routing happens directly at the OS level, bypassing Ableton entirely so there's no added latency.

Right now, the Node package is only compiled for Apple Silicon. I made it free for today if anyone wants to try it.

Search for midihub on maxforlive-com

[PC] What the heck is going on here?

I am at my wits end here...

So I've been using Cubase for decades. However bought myself a MIDI controller with pads to try some live looping, something I've fancied for years.

I'm using Ableton Live 12 Lite, it came free with the MIDI controller. Last night I was looping around, everything is good, all the channels are playing. Fantastic.

I saved the project, and quit for the night... Went back to it about an hour ago and only 1 channel is playing sound, the other 3 MIDI channels are completely silent even though they are selected, I'm in "arrangement" view, everything is how I left it last night... I'm beyond confused here why there's only 1 channel playing now.

None of them are on SOLO, or MUTE from what I can see, I've got no idea why it's suddenly ignoring those other 3 channels.

[Question] How do you make stock ableton drums sound like they’re in a bigger room?

Hi yall

I’ve been making midi drum beats in ableton for a while and really like it. Honestly I’m satisfied mostly with the stock analog drum racks they have but was wondering if I could make them sound like they’re in a bigger/echoey room cuz they sound kinda dry

I’ve tried turning up the reverb knob, it just doesn’t have the desired effects

Anyone have any advice on like stock audio effects to put on drums to make em less dry and maybe sound like they’re in a room

[Tutorial] Help! Recorded clip sound only comes into one ear. Otherwise, sound comes in both ears correctly. What can I do?

Help! When I record something and play it back the sound only comes into my right ear. It's so uncomfortable it literally prevents me from using the program. What's weird is when I RECORD the sound comes in both my ears, just like when I listen to anything else outside the Ableton program on my Mac the sound comes into both ears, too. The sound coming into only my right ear is only a problem when I playback a recorded audio clip. Appreciate any help, thank you!
