1.0 1.0 question: I bought tons of ships years ago just because I loved collecting the models, but I also kept all of the other stuff in the packs. I've also bought a sealed 1.0vl core set. Do I have everything I need to play fully fleshed-out games of 1.0? (More details within)

Hi! So, in addition to the info in the title:

I did start buying a bunch of 2.0 expansion(?) gameplay kits (Never Tell Me the Odds, Hot Shots and Aces I and II, Fully Loaded, and a few more), as well as a Conversion Kit, when the game was being officially discontinued, thinking that it was about time to start actually playing - thinking I'd either play 2.0, 2.5, or XWA rules.

This last week, after realising that (A) I didn't have a Rebel Alliance Conversion Kit (I thought I'd bought one), and (B) They're now reeaally expensive, I thought I might dial everything back a bit, and revert to 1.0. A few advantages popped into my head [1.] I could save that Conversion Kit money, [2.] I could sell some of these 2.0 gameplay expansion sets, [3.] I could have a potentially more simplified gameplay experience (1.0 out of the box sounds like a much more streamlined affair than 2.5 with all of its modes and options that the expansions would introduce?) and I'll only be playing casually, with usually one friend in particular; [4.] The idea of having an all-physical, out-of-the-box gameplay experience that doesn't rely on online stuff sounds really appealing.

So, with all of that said, do I have the right idea? If I have the 1.0 core set, about 14 Rebel ships, about 18 Imperial ships, and all of the gubbins for them still; would I have a full gameplay experience with just that stuff? I assume none of those 2.0 extra (non-ship) packs have any relevance to 1.0?

Thanks in advance!

Yup, core set gives you all of the essentials, anything you add to that is optional spice (though a few more ships than the core set are recommended but you've got that covered already)

About the only thing you really should do is beef up the X-wing. There were some mods out there - Lock S foils gave it one extra attack die from memory. The newer editions gave it a better dial I think. I'm rusty though.

But yes, just get it out and have some fun with it!!

What's Lock S Foils?

Probably means this upgrade card. The Saw's Renegade's expansion did wonders to help bring the titular X-Wing back into casual competitive use.

You should check out the wiki. There you can find rules, and the last FAQ/Errata that was released for 1.0 (downloadable under the Support tab). You can also use this list builder:

https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Galactic%20Empire&d=v4!s!&sn=Unnamed%20Squadron&obs=

When putting 1.0 lists together, as the various upgrade cards, crew, etc, are the 'fixed versions', and it allows for easy print and play squadrons, as the list can act as a proxy for cards you don't have. Of course you can always just play them as they were originally printed too. I hope this stuff helps. Happy flying!

It does help, thank you! What state was the playability of the X-Wing in before/without that card?

It was fine, depending on what era of play you're looking at. The power creep definitely got prevalent as the release waves went on, and of course, competitive tournament meta and casual play are two different things. There is a major difference however, between a 'stock' X-Wing from Wave 1, to a 'Fixed' one that is running 'Renegade Refit', and 'Servomotor S-Foils', especially if you are also using something like 'Integrated Astromech' and 'Flight Assist Astromech' in conjunction with it. You can play around with the squad builder to see what I mean, as it can take a 'Rookie Pilot' from 21 points with no upgrades, that only has the option to Focus or Target Lock, to one that under various circumstances, can Boost, Barrel Roll, perform advanced maneuvers, and in a pinch, lose it's astromech to avoid taking potentially lethal damage, all for only 20 points. Saw's Renegades was the 'fix' pack for both the X-Wing and the U-Wing, and also included a new generic X-Wing Pilot called 'Cavern Angels Zealot', It costs 22 points, so 1 more than the Rookie, had a Pilot Skill of one less (1 instead of 2), but in return, gained the Elite Talent upgrade slot. FFG released several of these 'Fix' packs throughout the game's lifespan, some with better or worse results. Stuff like 'Rebel Aces', 'Imperial Aces', 'Heroes of the Resistance', 'Imperial Veterans', and 'Guns for Hire'. The good news is, even though a lot of these are overpriced right now, if you go looking for them on Ebay, you can still always proxy upgrade cards if you want.

I want to add, that you shouldn't get daunted by all of this, and just play what you have, see what you think, and have fun, which is of course the point of the game. I know it can be a little overwhelming catching up on years of content, as I did it myself not too long ago.

Thanks for how much you've put into your responses, there!

For 1.0 you need

Ships and their bases.
Dice
Measuring templates- labeled 1-5 speed, there should be 11 in total.
1.0 Pilot cards.
1.0 Pilot cardboard base with firing arc/stats/name
Upgrade cards
Some asteroids/debris fields.
Tokens

That’s all you really need. Normal games of 1.0 were 100pts, but you could choose any point value as long as both sides are roughly equal.

And is all of that in the core set (apart from the ships and the extra things that come in the ship boxes)?

Yes, I forgot to mention damage deck, which is also needed and also provided in the core set.

When I started out, both players shared the damage deck, and that worked fine for casual play.

You are correct. You have everything you need for 1.0, and the 2.0 (and beyond) is not backwards compatible. The ships can be still be used if you already have 1.0 stats and widgets for them. You could also take a look online to see if anyone has put together 1.0 compatible stuff for the 2.0 ships if nothing similar originally existed for 1.0. And if it turns out that your 2.0 stuff just can't be used at all, or don't want to, you can sell it.

Thanks very much!

If you want to avoid buying all the conversion kits and stuff for 2.0, I built an app that you can use to play the game without all the new tokens and dials etc. just need the minis and play mat.

It also has a searchable rules reference, and per phase reminders
