Announcement Please stop doing this on public land

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Okay, I know some people feel strongly about this, and I get it to a point. But I see stuff like this so often-- memorials and plaques nailed into living trees, carvings in the bark, painted rocks scattered all over, even gravestones for dogs-- and it is simply not appropriate for public land. I am genuinely happy for Robin, but it does not mean you need to nail it into a mature tree that you don't own.

I absolutely understand the desire to memorialize something like this. I would encourage people to plant a tree, or maybe pay for a bench along a walking path or something. But please don't vandalize living things!

Announcement Justice for my friend Afa Ah Loo

I attended the protest with Afa. I’m furious at the way his life was taken and the circumstances that lead up to it. I ripped down the No Kings placard and removed all other No Kings materials that was at his memorial shrine and replaced it with a portrait of Afa. The movement and the organizers do not deserve to associate themselves with Afa. To make your placards the main focal point of the shrine is so tone death, so vile and self serving. We demand justice for Afa.

Announcement Fill the Lakes Social Media Rally for Utah!

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

What is #FilltheLakes? it is a social media rally to help spread the word that Utah is dying of Drought, but not from any natural events, but from the Utah Government allowing our Farming laws and taxes to incentivize wasteful farming and ranching practices.

This Social Media rally campaign is for Utahns to take pictures, record the inversion, and record the constant dust storms caused by farms, gravel pits, and the Great Salt Lake to share with the world to be aware of how dangerous Utah is becoming because of its government's lack of sensible responsibility. To post to any hashtag related to Utah or events coming to Utah and show the world what it's really like living here.

Why March 1st? People will be planning in advance to visit Utah and often make reservations, our goal is to make them doubt said reservations and shake up potential money sources for large companies.

Its meant to pressure the government to begin revamping our farming practices and begin refilling our Natural Lakes so that nature can begin to heal.

What is the cause of the droughts?

Any Farm that has a crop up is taxed more because of it having a higher value, so instead of having crops that protect and keeping the Soil from eroding and breaking down Farmers will often let this fields become dust fields, meaning our drought becomes worse and worse, while they wait for Spring to begin planting Alfalfa

What is Alfalfa? Alfalfa is a grazing crop for large animals such as cows, but how does one grow it? It is grown by first flooding fields with irrigation water of 6 inches and 6 more inches of constant watering, for one ton of hay.

They are often watered at PEAK heat hours, this means that the water is often already evaporating, instead of doing it at the coolest hours of the day where the water can easily soak into the soil and have water retention.

How Much Water is used on agriculture?
Over 4.2 MAF is used by Agriculture, the conversion rate of MAF to gallons is 13,685,760,139,34.3462 gallons of water. Yet Utah's government has constantly reassured us that the best way to insure our state is healthy, that we need only to pray for more rainfall.

Yet there is no buffer for farmers to have crops that are less water intensive and keep the soil water retentive. Anything other than Alfalfa is a net loss for farmers because it is the highest selling crop out of Utah.

To move from Farming let us look at Gravel pits, Gravel pit is a Open-pit mine where there is no safety measures in place to insure any dust from the gravel is not affecting the local environment.

Why do I bring this up? Utah has over 62 open-pit mines, most gravel, and yet they are being expanded, even though Utah has some of the worst Air quality in the United States on the worst days and barely good on the best of days.

These pits are actively putting dust in the air which saps the air of any potential rainfall! meaning that its drying every bit of rain that touches it, yet these pits keep being made!

But why social media?
Utah is in need of major help to regulate and protect its people and lakes from these droughts, yet the Governor of Utah's answer is being repeated "Pray for rain!" and will not actively push towards Smart watering practices for Agriculture and Nature Reclamation for these open pit mines!

So what can YOU do? Well bringing attention of Utah's dying lakes and dangers can actually be productive for once! You can take pictures and evidence of Utah's problems! Posting these will scare off potential tourists, potential investors, or even the Olympics!

Governor Cox is counting on these investments to keep Utah's investors and rich to stay, yet when with this influx of information about how Utah is becoming a disaster will force them to either hunker down or finally start pushing for Utah be save.

Remember! The bottom line being hurt will make the powerful scared and will feel the pressure to do something! But don't stop there, if we let them settle too soon this problem will keep coming back, we are pushing for permanent fixes for these issues.

Announcement I'm officially leaving Utah

1.9k Upvotes
(Photo taken from the summit of Mt. Olympus)

I'm not a native. I moved to Utah over a decade ago completely against my will.

When I arrived, I was resentful. I felt like I didn't belong. I was uncomfortable, lost, unsure of why I was here and what I was supposed to do with my life. I felt completely out of place. Since then, I have had a marriage fall apart. I lost my faith. I lost family members. I lost friends. I genuinely hit rock bottom and almost checked out for good.

And then, I rebuilt everything. I found a new and happy life without relying on faith. I learned to love the outdoors. I learned to hike, backpack, and rock climb. I have spend countless nights sleeping under the Utah night sky. I've had good jobs and lost them. I've had bad jobs and lost them. I was homeless here. I bought my first house here. I earned my degree at a university here. I started a successful business here. I found a passion for photography here. I social distanced and quarantined here. I've been court-side at a Jazz game, in the owners box at a Bee's game, and on the field at a Utah v. BYU game. I made friends who accepted me for who I am and who I can become. I fell in and out of love a dozen times over and finally met someone with whom, together, we have built a beautiful blended family.

At the end of this year, my time in the shadow of the Wasatch Front is coming to a close. I just want to thank you all for helping me find a home here. Thank you for accepting this stranger in a strange land. I don't know what the future holds and there may be a day that I unpack my bags here again. I know that if I do, this is a place I can call home.

Announcement Election Mindfulness

To all my neighbors and friends:

Whoever you voted for, whatever you hoped for, whether you are happy or disappointed in this election, and whatever the future brings, remember this:

It does not have to change who you are, or how you treat your neighbors. If you feel hopeless, be the hope you want to see. The president is one person, and so are you. Let’s all do our part every day, be the good in the world. The future is always ahead of us, so let’s all do our part. Soon enough, the election will be behind us, for better or worse, let’s not let it change any of us for the worse. We keep being better. We keep being civil. It starts with us. Every day.

With goodwill and hope from me to you. I don’t care who you voted for. I will wake up every day and choose to be a part of the good in the world.

EDIT: If today is a tough to swallow, I hope this made your day a little brighter, and if you are happy with the election results, I hope this is a friendly reminder that we’re a community and to be good to each other.

And if this was a positive message for you. Just shut off social media for the day and have a better day. And don’t even bother reading the comments. The internet will never cease trolling. But also thank you to those with friendly responses showing the message was received.

Announcement We need to define "Northern Utah" and "Southern Utah"

Post image
592 Upvotes

When someone says "Southern Utah" I immediately think Cedar City south. If someone refers to "Northern Utah", it's the area north of Farmington. If you were to continue the northern boundary above the Uintahs west, north of that is "Northern Utah". Everything in between is "Utah".

I think we need to define Northern Utah and Southern Utah.

Note: I live near Ogden in Northern Utah.

I'm also curious to know if people define Northern and Southern Utah differently based on where they live.

Announcement The scammers got me today

This is more of a PSA, and I can’t believe that I, a millennial, fell for a scam today. What started out as a call from an officer with SL Co. sheriffs office, quickly turned into something I never thought I’d fall for. Basically they said I failed to show up to a court hearing that I signed a subpoena for to be a witness. Because of that they told me I needed to come to the office to do some signatures to prove that it wasn’t me who signed the subpoena. I was then told to leave work and because I was now under a suppressed order, I couldn’t contact anyone or tell anyone at work about it. Once I got in my car alone, I was told if I didn’t post money in an escrow account, I’d be arrested. If I showed up to the office without posted bail, I would be arrested. If I decided to stop contact and get a lawyer, there would be a warrant out for me.

So, I fell for it. I was caught off guard, threatened to be arrested and completely lost my common sense. At some point I even said, “I have so many red flags popping up right now.” The guy sounded legit, gave me 2 citation numbers, his badge number, and was very convincing.

Just to let everyone know, it’s a crazy scam. I’ve never gone through something in real life like this (the judicial process for a no-show on a subpoena), so I was obviously more compelled to abide since I was unaware of what the process was.

Stay safe out there. The grinch is roaming.

Oh, and when I called one of the numbers back, I got a message from a voice that sounded exactly like the guy I was talking to. Probably some AI stuff. Smdh.

Announcement UTA Frontrunner is a sorry excuse for being called a reliable mass transit

Utah should be embarrassed with the reliability of this train. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. How on earth can anyone commute on this train and expect to keep their job with it being so consistently delayed? I started riding again frontrunner for the past two months and have had more late arrivals in that time than the past 16 years of driving in. This is the biggest Shit Show.

Announcement Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states?

Utah’s minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour; and it hasn’t changed since 2009. That’s the same rate Utah workers have earned for over 15 years while prices for rent, food, gas, and healthcare have climbed. National research shows the purchasing power of the minimum wage today is significantly lower than it was when that rate was set, meaning $7.25 buys far less now than it did in 2009.

To put this in perspective: someone working full-time at $7.25/hour earns about $15,000 a year before taxes; which is right at or below the poverty level for a single adult.

Across the country, lawmakers and voters are responding to skyrocketing costs by lifting wage floors. Around 19 states are increasing their minimum wage in 2025–2026, with many set above $14 an hour; and some even over $16–$17.

These changes aren’t dramatic experiments; they’re responses to the same economic reality Utah families face: wages that don’t keep up with basic costs leave working people in crisis. Other states are tying wages to inflation or updating them regularly so that a “livable baseline” doesn’t erode over time.

Raising Utah’s minimum wage isn’t about charity; it’s about aligning pay with today’s economy:

• People shouldn’t have to work two or three jobs just to cover rent.

• Local economies strengthen when workers have spending power.

• Businesses benefit when employees aren’t living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Keeping Utah at $7.25 while inflation and costs climb isn’t sustainable. If other states can adjust for today’s prices, Utah should too.

Announcement Soldier pass shooting range madness

Today, a buddy and I went to go run some shooting drills at the range today and about five minutes in, we are met with an old man shooting steel at 5 yards next to us. Consequently, this stupid decision led to a ricochet into another guys leg next to us. The old man took no accountability whatsoever and continued to shoot the steel at the same distance. If that wasn’t crazy enough, a family of 5 pulled into the range shortly after this. There was 3 little girls shooting pistols over the berm at rocks causing more ricochets. My friend and I decided to call it off because of this and we waved down the family to hold their fire so we could retrieve our targets. The mother acknowledged us and gave us the go ahead so I assumed we were okay. As we were walking down I saw from the corner of my eye, one of the little girls raise her pistol and start firing down range. I yelled at them in disbelief, to tell them to hold their fire. My friend and I were so shocked that were just quickly grabbed all of our things and left. I contacted the local police department about this, so they could send an officer down to supervise. Unfortunately this is not the only time I’ve have experienced unbelievably bad etiquette and the ranges in Utah. Please be a responsible firearm owner and shooter so you don’t accidentally kill somebody.
