Question: Unanswered Why do so many drivers steal food? and is there any real consequence.
Two days in a row I've had my food stolen, Like is there any real consequence to them doing this? And what possesses people to do it man? I'm more than generous with my tips the one last night I tipped $14 on a $30 order but man I'm so done with this app after having my texts and calls ignored then fighting with support trying to get a refund while watching the driver sit in the same spot for 30 minutes then drive past my house 3 times just to **** with me. I couldn't even place another order yesterday because they picked my food up at 7:50PM and marked it "delivered" at 5AM!!!!!! Told myself it was just one bad driver but nope happened again today.

I used to be a driver and I had to pick up 2 deliveries at once from the same restaurant. After I delivered the first, the second one never registered and didnt show the address anymore. I took it home, got a letter from Uber which was basically just a slap on the wrist and nothing else happened.

So you can’t handle delivering a simple double. Got it. Life is hard sometimes

Not as hard as reading comprehension is for you, apparently

I’ve done like 6k deliveries across DD and UE. never happened to me once. Both orders were probably going to same house. This job isn’t for everyone

Don’t think it’s the drivers mostly, think it’s randoms that take advantage of staff not so savvy to the situation so it just ends up a mess for everyone.

It’s mostly drivers

They pick up the food. It’s gig work dude, as unskilled as it gets.

Food left on a shelf , in front of an apartment lobby, school campus table … there’s likely people who target these areas imo.

Some lady once tried to poach her neighbor’s order from me as I was walking up to her duplex. Addresses were listed on the porch post, the front had two doors next to each other. I saw her peeking out a second floor window then she came to the door as I was walking up with her hand out for the order.
It was a man’s name so I asked “For Chris?” (or whatever) and she said yes, then I asked for the PIN number and she just stared at me and eventually said she didn’t know it. Thankfully, dude came out of the door next to her just in time and grabbed it. Based on the tension, I think maybe it wasn’t the first time she had done or tried that.
All of that to say: if people are willing to do that to their neighbor that they see everyday, the same people are definitely willing to do it to a nameless, faceless stranger.

Next time don't disclose the name , that's the first line of defense . If they dont know the name, you'll know its someone hustling.

Most of these places don’t verify the person they give it to or just leave it out. Why would a person risk a source of income that pays for the dumb meals ppl order. It’s not a huge reward. I like that you think the person relying on the money would bother with that. Weird classist bullshit take but you can keep pretending.

"Yep, definitely the driver. Couldn't possibly be someone who walked in, pointed at a bag on the shelf, and said, 'Order for me.'"

First, it’s not always drivers sometimes it’s just some random person. Second, tons of people sign up just to steal food until they get kicked off.. there’s no consequences if you don’t want to be a driver.

How does a random person walk in and guess the customers name? Or better yet a code like at McDonald’s
3
u/Pitiful-Pension-6535 6h ago
You can usually see the names and codes on the receipts from the counter

every McDonald’s I’ve been in the last year at least, they keep the bags turned so you can’t see them

Depends, every place is different. Some places put the food out where anyone can take it, some McDonald’s do that too. One time an order was stolen from me as a driver, I got a late night order from McDonald’s in the McDonald’s parking lot. I got in the drive thru line, a couple minutes later someone cut the line and went straight to the window. When I pulled up they said someone picked it up. Had to have been the person that ordered stealing their own order.

there is nowhere in my entire zone that puts orders out like that anymore. As for your McDonald’s example that’s on the employees for not verifying. As I said, in my zone neither McDonald’s close to me would give you anything without you telling them the code

I just had this happen with UE my first time using it again after a few years (last time I stopped using it was for the same reason). I never have this issue with Grubhub

Nope. Uber won’t do anything even if you park and explain to prakeet exactly what happened and who they need to hold accountable. the customer is then hung out to dry as well. How many customers do you think have this happen and then never order again? they’ll figure it out too late

For the same reason customers ordering food lie and say they never got the food so they can get a refund and steal the food, because they can. Because it is on some level a system of honor and there will always be some people who can't help themselves but to get over on something if the opportunity presents itself. If it was most drivers stealing food most of the time or most customers stealing food most of the time, the whole delivery business would have ended by now. It's only the worst of the worst who will just steal and you just happened to get some very bad luck to get two orders so close to one another that were stolen.

They do it right in front of you. Random strangers just grab bags on the shelf. Maybe they want to be caught on camera and go to jail, but nothing happens on the first time.

Why not steal? It's not unethical and I don't care if you say otherwise

u/Drascilla 6h ago
What mental gymnastics are you doing to convince yourself it's not unethical? Genuinely curious at your thought process.

I'm a driver and I also wonder about this. There seems to be a lot of threads about food theft but my guess it is such a small percentage of total orders that it just doesn't matter to Uber.
