Academics Ask Me Anything for Incoming (and Returning!) Students
Rather than incoming students having to sift through dozens of other posts to see if their questions have been answered before, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where these questions can be gathered together.
I welcome all incoming (and returning!) students to ask their questions about housing, course selection, food, social life, and anything in-between within this thread. I'll do my best to answer questions I'm qualified to answer and I encourage other students to chime in as well. Hopefully this post can become a compendium of frequently asked questions.

Academics Taking an APMA class as a College Student
I am considering taking an APMA course, and I do need it for my major asap so I’d preferably take it this Spring. However, since I am a student in the College, I know that Engineering students get priority in enrolling in APMA courses.
Is there a way to guarantee a spot in a class? I remember being removed from an APMA class last year because I wasn’t an engineering student and I don’t want that to happen again.
Or is the only option is for me to wait until open enrollment in August and hope there are available seats during the section i am available?

Student Life Anyone studying abroad in Dublin Spring 2027?
I’m a UVA student planning to study abroad in Dublin, Ireland for Spring 2027 through IES Abroad (Engineering, Math & Science program at DCU). I was wondering if anyone else from UVA is going to Dublin next semester or knows someone who is!
I’d love to connect with other students before going!
On-Grounds How to appeal a citation for the 2nd time?
I received a parking citation outside on Gaston student housing last week and I submitted an appeal, which they denied. Im going to appeal a second and final time and would like to know what to say to increase my chances of it working. Thanks

Housing/Dining SDAC housing accomodations for back pain?
For context, I'm a current first year who has had back surgery for scoliosis around two years ago, with chronic pain after walking long distances or sitting for too long. I'm applying to SDAC(interview next week so a couple days before the priority housing deadline) but I'm not sure what to request in terms of accomodations for next year housing. What would be within reasonable bounds that I can actually receive? What housing options on ground would be plausible? So far I've requested an elevator/first floor room, and no stairs leading the building, but I don't want to be living at Lambeth(distance from grounds) or Weedon(too many stairs near Gooch Dillard).

Academics What physics textbooks are used at uva?
Hello all,
I’m not a student yet, but plan on transferring by the fall. I want to study physics at uva and have yet to take physics I at cc, I’m at nova. I would like to self study physics I, so that when I arrive at uva, I will be seeing the material twice. I know that it will likely vary by professor, but what textbooks have been used by professors in your physics classes? Specifically Physics I and II. If anyone also has workbook recommendations that would be great too. Thank you 🙏🏾

Academics STAT 3120 Lubberts
Rating on course forum is pretty crappy and slawski’s is much better. Need to take the class either Spring or Fall 27. How bad is lubberts’ class? Worth it to wait until Fall?

Athletics Just a heads up…last night’s win was not at all impressive. We almost lost to a team using a 3rd & 4th QB along with the worst kicker in CFB.
tl;dr: We are garbage.

Cville at Large Movement/Parkour Park Installation in Charlottesville
Hey y'all, I'm posting a link to a Google Form to try and gauge public interest in getting a movement/parkour park installed here in Charlottesville.
Ultimately, the goal is get an installation built that will cater to all members of the community regardless of age, race, physical ability, and socio-economic backgrounds. A place where folks can come together to get fit, practice skills, and learn to play again. No gym membership or sports equipment required, just curiosity and a desire for self-improvement! Parkour, calisthenics, MovNat, etc; the only limitation is your imagination.
We're kicking things off by gauging general interest with the community. Just a few yes or no questions and an option to be included in future discussions if you wish. Please take some time to look it over and share with other members of the community.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

General Question Be honest, is it worth applying ED out of state with my stats?
UVA has always been my top school, but my academic profile is very subpar compared to the average admit…
Context: High income mixed (indian surname) female in US, suburban new york, at small ish (~1000 total student body including conjoined middle school, class size roughly 100 people) relatively competitive public school, school has had several UVA admits in the past couple years but yield rate is pretty low with only one student attending
Stats: 3.57 UW, 3.71 W gpa, 32 act, 12 aps total
(by far the worst part of my application… I’ve only taken the ACT once and can’t retake it in October because my dumbass missed the deadline)
Senior year: ap english lit, ap gov, ap environmental, ap stats, ap 2d art
Junior year: ap bio (3), ap music theory (3), apush (4), ap lang (5)
Sophomore year: ap world (3), ap seminar (3), apcsp (3)
School doesn’t do class ranking
Intended major: English (might give me a slight advantage in admissions but not much)
Additional info: Parents have been going through a messy divorce since mid-sophomore year which is where my grades declined quite a bit. they still were not that great throughout junior year tbh, not necessarily bad but like mixed a’s and b’s. we’re all in the same house still. cps has been involved. i also have an autistic sibling i spend a lot of my time taking care of
Extracurriculars:
Literary magazine: Editor-in-chief, hosted a writing competition at my school that awarded over $500 to winners, collaborated with magazines from other schools at local events, organized and hosted annual end-of-the-year ceremonies for the magazine, etc
Cashier: Run of the mill retail job, working around 13-15 hours a week on average
Music performance/talent show club: Co-organizer, this club has a specific name at my school i js dont wanna give too much personal info lol. basically organizing, promoting, and performing at a biannual event for students to perform music and poetry that usually has an attendance of 70-100 people per night
Video editor: This ones kinda weird but my ap lang teacher used to have this club-based instagram account where we’d record videos of both he and chatgpt answering the same writing prompt and the comments would vote who did it better. the account got well over 500 followers before it was banned by proxy (this one kid who had access to the account got his account banned.) i put a ton of time into editing the videos sophomore and junior year, usually putting out around two 2-3 minute vids per week, really sucks that i dont have any metrics to prove that with now though
Online business: Depop… i have a pretty good following (nearly 500) and have made a couple hundred sales over the past 2-3 years with a 5 star average. I definitely put a lot of time into it
Rock club: President and founder, literally have only had two meetings so far tho lol. So far its honestly just been my film teacher and a couple other students talking abt rock music and planning songs we’ll play, hoping to somehow further develop this before its too late
Book club: been participating for 2 years pretty consistently, theres no executive positions in the club (ive suggested it before but the clubs just too small for that)
Poet laureate society: involved with my county’s poet laureate society, helping organize, reciting poetry at, and booking my schools literary magazine at some local events, usually only once a month tho
Library volunteering: I’ve been volunteering for 4 years here but very inconsistently… i don’t have a substantial amount of community service hours
Taking care of autistic sibling, self explanatory
I’m also running for president of my schools art honors society, i think the likelihood is pretty high that ill succeed with this because the art department is veeery small here, plus im pretty close w the head of the department and well acquainted with the majority of “art kids”
Awards/honors (also not too great):
Teen poet laureate finalist of my county
First class designation for my literary magazine in a nationwide contest
Scholastic regional gold key
AP scholar w/ honor
NSDA degree of merit (yeah idk)
Trying to find last minute writing competitions to boost this ^^
Letter of recommendation are definitely great, 1 from my ap lang teacher with whom im very close with + has commended me for my writing a ridiculous amount, the other from my ap bio teacher who also has a pretty high opinion of my writing ability and has def seen an upward trajectory with me.
Essay is definitely pretty great, I mean as an english major I have to put a lot of effort into it. I’ve gotten lots of positive feedback
Anyways yeah, I think I’m applying ED but unsure about it. Technically if I got my grades up I could have an UW 3.62 and W 3.78 and my ACT score could also go up, but I’d then be applying RD… I’m not sure whether it’s worth waiting or just applying ED now and getting that small advantage.

Off-Grounds Creative inspiration needed, TIA!
Hello! I’m working on an illustration of the 14th Street Bridge and the infamous box trucks that get stuck underneath it. I have a lot of creative freedom with this project, but I thought I’d do a little research to make sure I’m capturing the spirit of it!
I’ve lived in Cville for about 16 years, but I’ve never really frequented the Corner or kept up with the bridge’s ongoing truck-related drama. 😂
The illustration could be as simple as a truck getting wedged under the bridge, but I’d love to hear from people who know the area better. If you’re a UVA student, alum, or just familiar with the Corner, what details or little Easter eggs would you want to see in a print like this?
Are there any particularly memorable truck incidents, legendary stories, or other details that would make the illustration feel quintessentially Cville?
I’d love to hear your ideas!

News The story about the Cornell 7 is reminding me of the UVA Jackie saga
Almost 12 years ago. What a shit show.
To be perfectly honest, I see some parallels.

EDIT: Whatever people. I actually believe men in these situations have rights too. Like the right to not have your life ruined when the facts are murky (as they are here). You can call that a “horrible take” all you want. In my view it’s the correct take to afford all parties due process and in some cases (not all cases, but some) the benefit of the doubt.
