Did anyone else not find Mike funny?

Both my partner and I are fans of Bottom and The Young Ones basically because of Rick and Ade but we are not fans of Mike the Cool Guy. I never really found him funny and wonder if he was meant to be? Was he meant to be the straight man of the show? Did anyone else dislike him or am I missing something?

In the episode "Boring". As the boys walked down to the pub Neils says to Rick "I'll tell you somewhere I've never been" Rick asks "Where" Neil's reply gets garbled by the old lady being kidnapped. The script says Neil says "Down", I was also told he says "weir" - but it sounds nothing like either. The only thing I can make of his answer is "wearer".
