Friday Fun Fact

Post image

fun fact In the last 10 years, the Big Ten has had three unranked teams start 5-0 (such as Minnesota in 2019, Maryland in 2023, and Nebraska starting 5-0 unranked). Meanwhile, the last time an SEC team started 5-0 and wasn't ranked in the AP Top 25 was all the way back in 1943.

I'm waiting for an 8-4 SEC team to argue they deserve to be in the playoff, because their 4 losses were all conference games so they're QUALITY losses.

I swear this has already happened lol

I think 9-3 Bama screaming to be included is the worst we've had so far.

Give it a few seasons, we'll see a 4 loss SEC team throwing a fit I'm sure.

Once there are 24 in the playoffs, the SEC will expect all of their 7-5 teams to get in.

Let em. We’ve quashed their rebellions before.

Good thing the AP Top 25 has become irrelevant.

How about this one? No. 14 Iowa loses 31-14 to No. 5 Ohio State. Drops to 20. Fine, but...

Same week: No. 16 Mississippi State loses 56-23 to No. 7 Alabama. Drops one spot to 17.

It's absolutely comical.

This needs to be bumped to the top

I'm glad we're not ranked this week, would be too much noise. If they get it done tomorrow, the rest will sort itself out.

I'm honestly shocked they didn't push them into the top 25 so they could advertise it as a "Top 25 match up". I thought for sure Nebraska would be at like 23rd or 24th.

The pollsters have been burned terribly over the last 20 years by trusting the brand more than their eyes. I understand their hesitation.

FWIW if the game was on ESPN Nebraska would be in the top 25, so they could advertise it as such. But since it’s not on the home of the CFPESPN, they’re not.

Husker fan here.

I don’t know anything about the SEC teams in situations similar to Nebraska that were ranked. But what I do know is that this current Husker team has not shown enough to be ranked in my opinion. We’ve played 3 cupcakes a B1G team with a new coach and a B1G team that has never had any real football success. That’s no offense to Maryland, just trying to be objective.

If Nebraska wins this weekend, expect a jump to the high teens/low 20s. They’ll certainly have earned it.

If it’s a close loss, essentially nothing changes. Could maybe even sneak into the bottom of the top 25 depending on the way the close loss happens.

If it’s a blowout (and we certainly would not be surprised if it is), then the lack of ranking is justified.

Rankings mean essentially nothing at this point anyway. Just win and things will take care of themselves. Indiana is a really good team and I’d be much more interested in hearing about ways to beat them instead of whining about not being ranked.

6-0 with the defending champs scalp should get you up to ~15.

Nebraska can't win if the referees don't call blatant targeting, late hit and pass interference. We can beat Indiana if the big 10 calls a fair game, but they don't want their red headed step child to beat their golden boy!

Yeah first half has been pretty strange with regard to the calls. The PI and missed targeting both shut down our drives. Frustrating portion of an otherwise solid first half from the big red.

three of Nebraska's wins are two MAC teams and an FCS. 2019 Minnesota also struggled in their non-conference despite being 5-0 and 2023 Maryland beat an FCS, one of the worst all-time FBS programs (Charlotte), and a pre-Cignetti Indiana team. Admittedly that Maryland team also beat UVA, however that UVA team went 3-9 and was coming off a year where their final two games were cancelled because of the shooting of three of their players.

At least the SEC requires an out of conference P4 game.

Those were just 3 examples.

I see what you are saying, but lets not act like its not inflated lol.

SEC didn’t require an OOC P4 game for a long time and only had 8 conference games for a long time

This is literally the first year for both. This guy Stanning the SEC for no reason.

4

u/dinkytown42069 Minnesota 4d ago

I think it's a policy this conference should also have.

3

u/MoistAd5423 4d ago

Not that this is a flex or anything but North Dakota is a top 10 FCS team, and they are probably better than the worst P4 teams.

Nebraska has beaten nobody good, and while there are other programs ranked that beat nobody good (BYU is ranked 8th and their best win is 17-10 at TCU), I don’t see it as good enough of a resume to be ranked.

Also AP polls are garbage

yeah I don't disagree about UND. Sagarin actually has them above the MAC teams that NU played.
