Software release New Release: Tor Browser 15.0.25 | Tor Project

The Tor Project released Tor Browser 15.0.25 on October 12.

According to its official announcement, the update includes important Firefox security fixes and updates several components:

Tor: 0.4.9.14

NoScript: 13.6.36.1984

OpenSSL: 3.5.9

Additional security fixes backported from Firefox 158.

The release follows the recent Tor 0.4.9.14 security update, but this is a new Tor Browser release, not a repeat of that announcement.

Tor Browser's security depends on both its anonymity protections and the underlying browser engine.

An attacker exploiting a browser vulnerability could potentially undermine protections that Tor's network routing alone cannot provide.

Users should update through Tor Browser itself or obtain the release from the official Tor Project website.

Chances of getting hacked while exploring the dark web using TOR

Hello, I’m new to Reddit, and I’m not sure if I can ask this question here, but I was wondering if using TOR will decrease one's chance of being hacked significantly while exploring the dark web for fun? (I am new to TOR and only know about the onion routing method.) For additional information, I am running TOR inside the Brave browser on Linux inside a UTM on my Mac. I am also using a VPN on my Mac while using my phone’s hotspot.

Is there a possible chance of TOR not being able to protect my privacy even though I am not making any human errors? If so, what might cause that situation?

The dark web isn't what movies make it look like. Here's what it actually is

Most people mix up three different things:

Surface web: anything Google can index (news, Wikipedia, shops).

Deep web: content behind logins or paywalls, like your email, bank account, and private databases. This is the vast majority of the internet.

Dark web: a small part of the deep web that needs special software, like Tor, to access. Sites use .onion addresses.

Why it exists: Tor was originally developed with U.S. Navy research funding to protect communications. Today it's used by journalists, whistleblowers, and people living under censorship. Even Facebook and the BBC run .onion versions of their sites.

The reality: Yes, illegal marketplaces exist there, but there's also a lot of scams, dead links, and law enforcement honeypots. Many "dark web" horror stories you read online are exaggerated or made up.

Safety basics if you're curious:

Never download files from unknown sources

Don't share personal info

Use the official Tor Browser only

Stay away from anything illegal. It's not worth it.

Being anonymous isn't the same as being criminal. Privacy tools are just tools.

What's the biggest myth about the dark web you've heard? 👇

Not Tor Telegram groups found on the deep web: what about anonymity and what are the risks?

Hey guys! All right? I've seen several links on the deep web that direct to Telegram groups and I'm left with a question about the anonymity issue. From what I understand, when you join a Telegram group, you end up being more exposed, as the platform may associate your account with a phone number and other information. In that case, wouldn't that end up compromising much of the anonymity someone would have when browsing the Tor network? I also wanted to know what the real risks are of entering these groups. Is there any danger related to the exposure of personal data, scams, malicious files or even user identification, even taking some precautions? I'm considering purchasing a separate chip exclusively for this, but I don't know to what extent this measure actually helps preserve privacy or if there are other, more important aspects to consider. Could anyone already have experience with this share some guidance? I'd like to better understand what the risks are, what I should consider before entering these groups, and what security and privacy precautions are recommended. Thanks!

What is the point of Tor if the vast majority of websites don't work properly when I use it? Besides, there are so few .onion addresses that it's not even worth trying.

Proper use of TOR for investigative work

Hello everyone. It's a pleasure to connect with you all through this community.

I recently installed the Tor browser on my personal computer. As a completely new user, I have some questions and concerns I'd like to clarify before I start using it regularly.

First of all, I'd like to explain why I initially decided to install it.

I currently work professionally in the economic and financial sector, so I constantly have to conduct research to complement other aspects of my work. I have a multidisciplinary approach that connects purely economic and financial areas with social ones to cover much more than I could with raw data alone.

I often encounter the problem of blocked pages or blocked or extremely biased information.

I've been considering many options, one being to use a VPN, like the one available from Surfshark. The other is to switch to a browser that gives me the opportunity to broaden my horizons, which is why I considered Tor as a valuable tool to achieve this goal.

I would like to know if Tor is the right tool for this task. I'm looking to understand the risks, implications, and pros and cons of using this browser. I'd also like to take this opportunity to clarify (if it's not true) whether the browser could pose vulnerabilities to my computer simply by installing or using it passively.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Security Release 0.4.9.14

Thumbnail
forum.torproject.org
66 Upvotes

The Tor Project announced Tor 0.4.9.14, addressing several high-severity security vulnerabilities.

The developers explicitly state that the issues affect clients, onion services, directory authorities, and relays.

They strongly recommend upgrading immediately. Detailed vulnerability tickets will remain private for at least another week to give operators time to update.

Official Tor Project security release.

This is another significant security release following Tor 0.4.9.13 in September. The rapid succession of security fixes makes keeping Tor installations current particularly important.

For beginners, remember that Tor Browser and the underlying Tor software have separate version numbers. Users should update through their application's official update mechanism rather than manually replacing bundled components.

Mullvad Browser over Tor still showing a DNS leak on Debian — false positive or actual leak?

On Debian, I’m running Tor on the default SOCKS port,127.0.0.1:9050, and routing Mullvad Browser through it.

Tor works, and my public IP shows up as a Tor exit node, but Mullvad’s connection check still reports a DNS leak. It lists several DNS resolver IPs, mostly in Germany. After restarting Tor, those IPs change to addresses associated with Tor infrastructure in the Netherlands.

"TestSocks 1", "SafeSocks 1" in /etc/tor/torcc, and "network.proxy.socks5_remote_dns = true"(mullvad about:config) configured.

How can I tell if DNS requests are actually leaking outside Tor? I want to see what happens when I visit a domain like "example.com" and figure out which resolver receives the query.

I’m on Debian 13 and would prefer a way to test this without installing Tor Browser or changing my system-wide routing.

GoBalance used only half of a Tor-format key when signing, exposing .onion private keys

Post image
3 Upvotes

I came across Searchlight Cyber's research on a GoBalance signing bug, and the interesting part is how such a small mistake caused a serious security issue.

When handling Tor-format keys, GoBalance passed only 32 of the 64 key bytes to its signer. The missing 32 bytes were important for generating the signing nonce. Without them, the nonce became predictable from public information.

According to the research, just one published descriptor could be enough to recover the private key.

This could allow someone to take over the affected .onion address without actually breaking into the original server or database.

The issue affects GoBalance installations using the vulnerable key format. It doesn't mean Tor itself is broken.

What I'm curious about is how developers could catch a mistake like this during testing. Would normal signature verification tests even detect a predictable nonce?

How not to be like Peter Stokes (Securing windows PC 2026)

I know we've seen the repeat question on how to protect ourselves on TOR using a VPN and TAILS on a USB. I wanted to check in on if there was a way also my Global Device Identifier (GDID) from my windows pc doesn't get tracked. I'm wanting to learn new skills.

Also since we're here, what VPN do you guys commonly use?

### Alert to the Tor community: potential interest of Mythos 5 in the Tor ecosystem

To date, there is no public evidence that Claude Mythos 5 has been used specifically to find vulnerabilities in Tor Browser or the Tor network infrastructure. This text does not claim that such an event has occurred.

However, there is a combination of public facts that I consider significant enough to warrant the community's attention.

Mythos was developed for automated vulnerability discovery and has demonstrated the ability to find and exploit flaws in complex software, including components related to Firefox. Tor Browser, in turn, is based on Firefox ESR and incorporates its own security and privacy modifications.

Furthermore, during an evaluation conducted by the UK AI Security Institute (AISI), Mythos 5 demonstrated the ability to autonomously use the Tor network as part of an attack chain. The incident did not involve Tor as the target; the model used the network as an evasion mechanism to carry out other actions. This is significant because it demonstrates that the model not only has a conceptual understanding of Tor but is capable of operating through it in an autonomous scenario.

There is also Project Glasswing, through which Anthropic models have been employed to analyze real-world software and discover vulnerabilities in open-source projects.

These facts do not demonstrate that Tor is currently being attacked by Mythos, nor that any specific Tor Browser vulnerability has been discovered by the model. The point is this:

**Is it reasonable to consider the possibility that systems of this caliber are being used—including in private environments—to evaluate components of the Tor ecosystem?**

This hypothesis warrants attention because there is a clear overlap between the capabilities demonstrated by Mythos and critical components of the Tor Browser: automated code analysis, browser vulnerability discovery, exploitation of real-world software, and the operational capacity to utilize the Tor network itself.

Therefore, it would be prudent for Tor Browser researchers and maintainers to consider—as part of their standard security processes—the possibility that advanced automated agents are hunting for vulnerabilities in components shared with Firefox, as well as in specific modifications introduced by the Tor Browser itself.

To reiterate: **this is not an allegation that Mythos has compromised or tested Tor. It is a warning based on publicly demonstrated capabilities and a possibility that should not be dismissed without investigation.**

If no investigation uncovers evidence of such activity, that is excellent. However, given the rapid pace at which automated vulnerability discovery systems are advancing, I believe it is more worthwhile to investigate this possibility than to simply assume it does not exist.

Is TOR the answer to remain anonymous in a totalitarian country with minimum to non-freedom of speech?

Hello, so I would like to have the peace of mind while expressing my thoughts in social media such as X and Facebook, making articles, commenting and posting stuff but a lot of people have been arrested before for talking about things that go against my government's ideology.

Will installing TOR browser and creating a profile that has no information affiliated with me will allowed me to be untraceable?

Tor New identify works differently than restart

Using Linux Tor version 15.0.24 when I use a webtunnel bridge Tor functions but If I get a OBFS bridge and perform a new identify it works. However if I close Tor then repoen tor it never connects to the obfs site suggesting that the new identify button does something different.

Why would tor not work with after closing and reopening?
