Hardware Valve sent me a Steam Frame review unit, what do you want me to test?

Post image

It’s here.. Valve has provided Steam Frame Hub with a review unit for our coverage. There’s already been a lot of excellent coverage of Frame, so rather than simply repeating what other reviewers have already answered, I want to hear what the community still wants to know.

Let me know if there's any use cases you want testing, specific games, etc.

I'll be spending plenty of time with the hardware over the coming days and will work through as many requests as I realistically can.

I've also got the goopy kit here, so questions about that are welcome too.

If somebody has already asked what you wanted to know, upvote their comment rather than posting it again as that’ll also give me a good indication of what the community most wants to investigate.

Disclosure: Steam Frame and the accessories pictured were provided to us by Valve for review. Valve has zero editorial control over our coverage.

Comfort is absolutely night and day compared to stuff like quest 3, the streaming is absolutely phenomenal too

Saw the posts not too long apart from each other and found it funny.

Not to make fun of the two tho!

I think there is no controller to make, that would fit both at the same time

Hardware Your reservation is not real

I experienced a bug in their purchasing system where I had added the frame to my cart, clicked "continue to purchase" in the cart, and it redirected me to the cart - not allowing me to buy the Frame. Opened a support ticket and this was the best I got.

So they're basically saying when you get a reservation email, there isn't actually a dedicated Frame set aside for you. Its just first come first serve in the reservation queue? Disappointed, but at least I didn't go to the waitlist.

Bought the 1tb and all accessories and charging block for $1500, the seller paid $1500.64. Amazing guy, super straight forward and chill. He mentioned he had a controller too, also unused. He sold it to me for 100 flat. No upcharge, no scalping prices. A true unicorn of Facebook marketplace. Great guy. Not all Destiny 2 players are bad!

Received mine yesterday, ran home after work to set them up.

Took the whole evening, but I got it done and was able to play for a couple of hours.

Holy shit, what an experience. First ever VR headset for me, it was awesome. Also funny note: I was so relieved everything went well! The delivery, the hardware, there's a running joke that everything I receive is defective and ends up having to be returned! haha. (Subtle foreshadowing)

I come from home work again and continue playing alyx. I suddenly now today find out my Dpad is not right, left button is mushy as fuck, still works perfectly though.

I say you know what? Screw it. I'm tanking it, whatever.

I continue playing, and suddenly start feeling... Cross-eyed? I can't for the life of me figure out what it is, I move the headset around in case it is badly placed, or light is coming in, idk.

I check both eyes separately, one lens is brighter than the other.

I'm actually feeling cross eyed because both eyes are not seeing the same thing. This feels like dogshit in dark areas, where one eye sees the room's contents, and the other doesn't.

Sent valve a ticket, to see if there is a solution or I need to RMA.

I treat myself like once a year or two, why does it never fucking work man...

Hardware The Steam Frame Experience has been pretty disappointing

Post image

I've had the Frame the couple last days and the experience has been quite bad.

In many titles I didnt even get past the Start screen like Dirt Rally 2.0, Project Wingman.

The wireless PCVR experience is a mess. The games sometimes don't launch, there are 2 steam interfaces. Connection often doesn't work.

There is constant stuttering when playing even with a direct line of sight of about 2 meters. I tried it both with Multi Link and without.

I do hope everyone that is on the reservation list gets their own soon.

I ordered mine Wednesday. Got it Saturday via UPS which I really wasn't expecting.

Here are two pics.

I have the 256GB model. I did get the charger too as it's cable was nice and long. No ergonomic kits were available, but was told I can get that later. Probably will get the head band.

Most comfortable I ever used. And I like it more than the Quest 3. Wild but I used it for a VRchat meet up on Saturday night for 8 hours (via PCVR Streaming).

Perpetual play with the charger is fine. It didn't get hot either. Not like my Quest 3. Visuals looked better in my book and performed better too.

And when I did karaoke people said I sounded far more clear, but that's subjective. I think the mic is vastly better.

Bugs? Menu is a little finicky. I didn't crash out or anything at any point. So I'd say that was very smooth sailing.

Hardware Dongle gets quite hot

Might want to move whatever's plugged in around it or give it some airflow.

Might be a stupid question, but does anyone know if it's possible the heat could affect streaming performance?

Had a broken latch from my frame maybe cause I tried to put it back in after getting my ergonomic kit and ended up hearing a rattling sound.
Safe to say I got one for free 🤧

Shoutout to the guy who recommended the Apache 3800.

Fit the controller in for the ultimate go box. Plenty of room underneath for additional accessories.

Hardware A day with the Frame

Here is my experience so far, I made a post before stating my frame arrived but I didn’t see they changed the rules about receiving posts so it got taken down

I got asked a few questions in my original post I’d like to forward onto this one

I use Bazzite and Windows, I was asked how it goes in Linux. Currently, it appears it only supports games in “2d” it definitely works well as a monitor but no VR over USB yet.

Windows works flawlessly and my god is that streaming impressive, it works really well with BS manager for anyone wondering and you wouldn’t know that it isn’t running on the headset, the only one so far that didn’t work great was Carx drift racing but I got it working you have to use a controller that’s not the ones that come with the frame

Okay now for standalone as a lot have said battery not great but it’s still not terrible, I ended up using my up to 240w adapter and a 5 meter cable to keep it going for many hours.
I found the swamp eye feeling doesn’t happen in here as it does with other headsets for me but it does do the opposite it gets a bit dry with the ergonomic kit nose skirt, I’ll have to try it with the spacer and see if it’s any better.

Tracking is good no complaints, pass through cameras do the job nothing to write home about but they work, same with the speakers, weight balance is great, it sits nice for me, I found around the outside just adjacent to my eyes gets a bit of pressure and I have to take it off for a few minutes here and there but the fit will vary for everyone

I can not wait for the modding community to do their thing
As a PSVR2 user I’m very impressed with this Frame and it will be my new one, I’ll be using it more now I don’t have to put so much effort into setting up

Any other questions or experiments let me know and I’ll look into them for you guys!

Hardware If you have really small hands and particularly short thumbs, I do not recommend the ergonomic controller grips

Thumbnail

I had the same issue with similar controller grips for my Quest 3s, if you have really short thumbs, it makes it genuinely difficult and somewhat painful to use them, I am an adult, 25. My hands are not going to get any bigger, so I basically just paid the money just for the top strap. Rethreading the stock controller straps is annoying but I think I do actually prefer them over the ergonomic ones, mainly because I literally cannot press the top button or the up button on the d-pad with the ergonomic controller strap.

Hardware Tips for Steam button on frame controller you may not know about

  1. Quickly pressing the button twice will turn your pass through camera on and off, no need to go through menus
  2. Holding the button for 3 seconds also centers your virtual screen
  3. Holding the button for 3 seconds while in a VR game also re

    centers the game

Hardware I saw two posts about returning the Steam Frame because the lenses was greasy and wouldn’t clean. It’s the cloth, not a defect.

On the right, I used the valve’s cleaning cloth that came with the frame in the box. On the left, I used a koala brand cleaning cloth I bought on Amazon.
