Discussion Hope against all odds

Post image

Guys, I know this may have been asked before, but I'm new in this sub, and I want to hear everyone's opinions on the matter.

Do you think that Armada will make a comeback with the Fantasy Flight Games Vault System? I honestly hope it does, since I had no way of picking the game up when it was still alive, and the prices on the secondary market nowadays are out of question for me.

What do you think?

No chance.

  1. AMG ≠ FFG. It's not FFG's baby anymore, it's not theirs to reprint. What AMG did with it sucked, but it only feels like that to players because were emotionally invested in the game. The suits don't see it that way. Armada was small potatoes to them, and they shuffled it over to AMG for bookkeeping purposes and then it withered. They don't take it personally, they have no hard feelings toward AMG.

  2. Armada ran on extremely thin profit margins, due to complex and expensive production and licensing fees. It would not look financially appealing to Asmodee to crowdfund a reprint.

  3. Disney isn't taking Ls on Star Wars. That's the narrative among some social media fan communities, but if Disney is looking at profits they've got very little to complain about.

  4. Armada didn't have the player count to justify a revival. I've been in the game from launch, and there are many games that you would see get reprinted through the vault program long before Armada got a chance.

I will argue with you on only one point. Armada actually passed. Wing in sales, but that was because they fumbled up xwings rules.

2

u/MistakenDM Jul 09 '26

Agree. Armada out sold Warhammer at launch... The last three years Armada has sold out tickets for Adepticon events. (And honestly, X-wing has made a good showing there too). Anyone saying there isn't enough folks playing just aren't looking in the right places. I can tell you IN/KY/OH has a healthy community surviving on 3d prints. We do quarterly tournaments and will be hosting a State tourney ay our local gaming convention in the fall.

Armada isn't dead, it's just no long under the boot heel of corporate greed!

AMG never wanted to do anything with armada. And once thry were given it they never did a single thing for them

2

u/MistakenDM Jul 10 '26

Yeah. I think the theories about them just wanting the IP to make Star Wars mini-games is likely true. I've heard some pretty messed up stuff from people in the know. There may have been many factors that lead to them shuttering the game but it always goes back to the same thing.... the shareholders...

Negative, won’t happen

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

Damn, you seem sure😂😂😂 Care to explain why?

25

u/lalith117 Jul 06 '26

Its been years got bought put and they killed the game.

5

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

Aren't FFG and AMG under the same company? The rights had only been been transferred, and considering the absolute disaster AMG did by killing off Armada to put the resources into Shatterpoint, only for Shatterpoint to get closed too shortly after because nobody cared about it, I don't think AMG can put a word in, if the higher ups decided to transfer the rights again

14

u/lalith117 Jul 06 '26

Your telling me... after they killed a game to raise another game and then they killed that game you think they would bring it back up?? Or focus on Legion v2....

-10

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

I am telling you there might be a chance someone decides to take away Armada from AMG and hand it back to FFG, since AMG is the one responsible for Armada's death, not FFG

10

u/obsidiansword23 Jul 06 '26

They’re. Not going to do that

5

u/DarkenAvatar Jul 06 '26

Asmodee got saddled with too much debt to invest in a game with as small of a return as armada. As much as I wish it wasn't so and as much as I personally invested into it.

u/lalith117 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Look we all have our times with hobbies only way this will ever come back is they format it into a new game. They killed xwing...

2

u/Benimus Jul 07 '26

Those same people who made all these decisions decided that AMG is the home for miniatures games, they're not going to go back on this.

4

u/obsidiansword23 Jul 06 '26

I started the game 6 months before it sunset, I had almost everything GCW before it did. They have too many administrative issues regarding debt. It’s almost 0% chance this game is coming back through any AMG subsidiary, besides all the other issues they claimed to have.

They barely printed this game when it was really popular and had an active, healthy competitive scene.

u/soldatoj57 Jul 06 '26

Because they saying on the Internet and giving strangers stress is fun to some people

u/gperson2 Jul 06 '26

Zero chance of this. Too expensive to produce, too many SKUs, licensed product.

u/GamingVision Jul 06 '26

I'm a bit more optimistic (but more from the business/crowdfunding side than Armada which I'm brand new to). What they said about the vault is that it would be largely crowdfunded reprints. Without question a reprint of Core + some large collection bundles selling very well on gamefound...especially if it's a "this is your last chance" kind of thing, and pricing would reflect that (though they might not be painted). Would Disney allow that...not sure, that's the biggest wild card.

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

I don't think Disney will have much to say, they are desperately trying to get something out of Star Wars by any means necessary, considering the amount of Ls they have taken with the franchise in the past years; if FFG approached them with the idea of reviving Armada, I doubt anyone at Disney would have anything to say, especially since Armada was very much a success before Atomic Mass Games shut everything down for no reason.

Still regret not picking up the SSD for $150 a couple years ago

2

u/Keuleman_007 Jul 08 '26

There was a very short time, very brief indeed... where models where piss-cheap. Bought a second SSD (and also for X-Wing second epic ships).

1

u/Straw_Hat_Jimbei Jul 07 '26

I literally have full fleets and a SSD I need to get rid of before moving.

2

u/CraftsmanMan Jul 07 '26

Nearby to ny? Lol

1

u/Straw_Hat_Jimbei Jul 28 '26

LA unfortunately. But my roommate is moving back to NY. Dm me.

1

u/DonnyPicklePants11 Jul 08 '26

when they cancelled the game my FLGS was selling all their inventory left of it for 1/2 off. I was broke at the time but got the SSD anyway. I haven't played the game in ages but it's still nice to look at it every now and then. Worth it IMO

4

u/psychopie00 Jul 06 '26

The SSD might be the only ship that can't be conveniently printed. All the rest is relatively easy.

3

u/Wobble-Engineering Jul 06 '26

I literally made one that can easily be printed.

2

u/psychopie00 Jul 07 '26

I stand corrected then!

1

u/Past_Search7241 Jul 07 '26

Resin or FDM?

2

u/Wobble-Engineering Jul 07 '26

It can be printed with both. But I personally focussed on fdm optimization. I wish I could share a pic here. Check out Wobbleking Gumroad

4

u/Tight_Carrot Jul 06 '26

I have a brand new one in shrink for sale but given size it’s local pick up only I’m in Canada Ontario

3

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

And I am stuck in Europe :(

1

u/boo-boo-kitty-fuck86 Jul 06 '26

Where in Ontario and how much?

1

u/Tight_Carrot Jul 22 '26

In the Toronto GTA area

1

u/SwellMonsieur Jul 06 '26

Ontario is huge. Sault Ste-Marie or Ottawa area?

4

u/adm_panda Jul 06 '26

Not enough money to be made in rebooting - relatively small player base - wish it wasn’t true but the business case to restart production (molds are expensie) doesn’t close for much profit

0

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 06 '26

Okay, but since the Vault System is based on crowdfunding, wouldn't the money issue resolve itself?

3

u/adm_panda Jul 06 '26

Juice still has to be worth the squeeze - I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see it being viable - ironically the community development of new content - while keeping the game alive makes there even less of a business case for a kickstarter type production

Half the community already has new and 3d printed content. So who would they be selling to? There are just not enough wallets that would open.

1

u/Nubsly- Jul 11 '26

I do kind of wonder if doing it à la carte instead of "bundles" (Ship, stand, base, card, etc..) might be a way to bring the margins back?

White box (no fancy packaging) with unassembled/unpainted ships.

Sets of firing arc cards.

Bulk bases and stands.

The kind of things people can use to complete their collections.

I know molds can be expensive, but I also know there's some options for softer molds that don't survive as many production runs too.

Just interesting to think about, but almost certainly wishful thinking.

4

u/adm_panda Jul 06 '26

Bottom line - keep an eye out for someone selling their collection - prices are better when buying in bulk - then take the leap.

Play on TTS and vassal to determine if the game is for you before putting money in

Best recommendation I can make for someone interested in the game at this time

2

u/fuckdecaf Jul 07 '26

Which is why I'm offloading my collection piece by piece. Plus I don't want to take the chance on it sitting on ebay for months.

3

u/ResponsibilityNew483 Jul 06 '26

I paid a pretty penny for my entire Rebel fleet but I'm honestly glad I did. They are only going to get pricier unfortunately 🫤

3

u/StarTrek1996 Jul 06 '26

Honestly you'd probably be better off just buying 3d prints off etsy for some cool ships. Yeah you'd have to paint them but it would be significantly cheaper

1

u/ResponsibilityNew483 Jul 07 '26

I've definitely started to expand with custom ships

3

u/GamingVision Jul 06 '26

It’s not so much Disney saying we don’t want money but more the nature of getting a full release vs crowdfunding, which they might have terms around the license on. Maybe it’s happened before but I can’t think of a big Disney brand that was exclusively crowdfunded.

3

u/comcamman Jul 06 '26

Sorry man. It’s dead and gone.

3

u/Da_Tater_Sammich Jul 06 '26

From reading the comments, Op's a living definition of the phrase "ignorance is bliss"

1

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 07 '26

Nah, I just want to think positive as much as I can. Been struggling for depression for ten years now, if I started giving up on things, I'd end up a wreck😅

1

u/Da_Tater_Sammich Jul 07 '26

I mean, you can just make your own everything. All the files are out there. There are great shops on etsy (pulsefired gaming makes amazing ships) that have ships, stands and even the cardboard bases. There are card templates that you can use and even free photoshop online to put it all together. I have 6 or 7 ships from doing this and its a great project that lasts up to a week!

You came here for copium and aren't getting any

The only way is with what little remaining stock there is and 3rd party stuff.

4

u/KarmAnshar Jul 06 '26

I've 3d printed proxys of what I've not been able to find for a reasonable price.

1

u/Max_Sandpit Jul 06 '26

But one of these Lego sets. It’s nearly the exact same size https://ebay.io/m/a7Hdrg

1

u/cmdrfrosty Jul 07 '26

Its unfortunately dead and gone. Im thankful I got most of my stuff right before it was discontinued even though I wasnt really able to start a clone wars fleet before the end. Unfortunately it will only be second hand stuff.

1

u/Duck_Troland Jul 07 '26

I feel Armada is in the best spot it's ever been after being discontinued by AMG/ whoever came after that. Not even joking, we keep having a couple friendly tournaments per year in Italy, with all the good that comes from a tightly knit community built over the course of, huh, something like 10 years and none of the bullshit that comes from having to deal with a soulless corporation that wants to maximize profits and doesn't even understand its own game.

You can still buy ships second hand, and there's some leftover stuff too. If everything else fails, 3d printing is a thing.

1

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 07 '26

You know of secondhand market in Italy? I've been trying to find stuff here, but haven't had much luck

1

u/Duck_Troland Jul 07 '26

There is a facebook group afaik, I don't think I'm allowed to post links but it's called "Star Wars ARMADA - Compravendita, Scambio e Valutazioni".

1

u/The_Templar_Marshal Jul 07 '26

Mmh...Just looked at it, unfortunately it seems to be dead. The most recent post is almost one year old and it was about X-Wing

1

u/Hoolio-Taco-8 Jul 07 '26

You should look at 3d prints there are some great quality products people are making and affordable most is as cheap /expensive as it was when the game was alive. Some lovely homebrew stuff and unofficially official stuff.

1

u/Mundane-Librarian-77 Jul 07 '26

I've been looking to incorporate ships from other games using "counts as" proxy rules to play bigger games and expand my fleets.

My SWArmada collection is kinda meager since I stated collecting too late in the games life. But there's lots of other compatible ships out there on the market.

3d printing of course! And recently I've added a few Leviathan ships from FASA and Aether Stream to my collection and these ships look great next to the bigger Armada designs. Heck my Leviathan Quiver class Carrier is even beefier than a Victory! The Leviathan Class Dreadnought model itself is 13 inches long covered in turrets, and weighs a ton!!
