Never try to get it signed. Anthony will rip up the card in front of you. No joke.

Get it graded or inside one of the graded cases
67
u/csbsju_guyyy 2d ago
THEN if you want to try to get him to sign it bring the slab. I don't think Anthony can tear a plastic slab and if he defaces it you can clean and/or get it regraded/slab replaced

Really? Fuck that guy. I’m surprised lessons have not been taught in the past.

u/simmonator 2d ago edited 2d ago
He’s spoken about it in interviews. He basically says he finds the character of C3PO - as written - very dear to him and thinks of the card as a hurtful insult/degradation.
Edit: the downvotes this has gotten in the space of 20 mins suggests some of you can’t tell the difference between “describing someone’s stated rationale” and “defending them”.
364
u/Neveronlyadream Obi-Wan Kenobi 2d ago
People can't, in fact, tell the difference between describing someone's rationale and defending them. I've gotten massive downvotes for doing the same thing. People really think if you say why someone did something, it must be a defense.
I thought everyone had heard about how insufferable he can be at this point, but apparently not. I've heard the stories about the cards too.
Meanwhile, if it was Mark, you know he'd not only sign it, he'd probably write a joke on it.

u/Mathfanforpresident 2d ago
I'm not joking when I say this. But reading comprehension isn't something that only comes into play when trying to pass an English test. The destruction of our education systems, paired with the use of digital devices and now AI, have decimated our future. For generations to come.
52
u/Neveronlyadream Obi-Wan Kenobi 2d ago
Comprehension in general, yeah. Media literacy and literacy has taken a big hit in the last decade and it was honestly never all that strong to begin with. Now with brainrot content that explicitly explains what's going on and what it means every five seconds and the education system being in a shambles, we're seeing how bad it can get.
Like right now, I know I've typed so much that a lot of people aren't going to read it, they're going to skim it and randomly pick out what they think are keywords and miss most of my point. I've just given up, because people don't seem to want to improve that skill, they want to believe they're doing great.
16
u/ThunderDungeon02 2d ago
You can also see it with attention span. Think about social media. Now if anything is slightly longer than a reel/ tiktok people keep scrolling. That is also why the shock factor has increased. People eat raw meat, hurt themselves, do shitty things to people to get reactions, and not even for money, for the hope of making money. I literally saw a grown ass man making a concoction in which the main ingredient was a bottle of elmers glue. Just complete idiocy for likes.
11
u/Neveronlyadream Obi-Wan Kenobi 2d ago
I dated a high school teacher for a while and according to her, what it looks like now is the boys all think they're going to be Twitch streamers or YouTubers and the girls are betting on OnlyFans. Both groups think they're going to be millionaires. We're not even talking about a bad school, either. She was at a really good school.
Obviously anecdotal, before anyone decides to tell me it is, but I've heard similar things from people who are around teenagers. The attention span is gone, the education is gone, and they're all banking on being content creators in a world that's filled with billions of them already.
12
u/ThunderDungeon02 2d ago
Exactly, it has become the new professional sports fantasy. Not realizing that most of these people have connections they won't have, a family life that allows and supports such idiocy, and that the fame is short lived for the majority.
I was telling my wife that I feel like these generations are really the first that are somehow dumber than the preceeding. I don't mean that in a "get off my lawn" I'm old gripe. But something as simple as reading, they either can't, or read well below their age.
6
u/Neveronlyadream Obi-Wan Kenobi 2d ago
It's honestly just kind of sad. I don't know how many people have known someone trying content creation of any type, but it's more involved than just getting a job and you potentially get paid way less. It's not as easy as people think.
You have to hustle constantly, you have to promote yourself constantly, follow trends, and make sure to keep your release schedule consistent so people don't move on. You can't just upload pictures, sit on stream playing games, or upload videos and expect to make a livable amount of money doing it.
As for the literacy part, I'm not entirely sure. It seems like it's getting worse, but it was honestly pretty bad when I was a kid too. Most of my classmates seemed like they could barely read and were constantly struggling.

As much as reading comprehension is necessary, i believe the real attack is on analysis, because to analyse something you have to ask questions and reason out the truth. That's why i hate the phrase, "mental gymnastics", like its a bad thing, sure jumping around to a bunch of unrelated points to prove an invalid argument is stupid, but its not the jumping around thats the problem, its the lack of ability to understand that those points have nothing to do with the topic. But being able to find commonality between sources is necessary, mental gymnastics are necessary, just not shitty mental gymnastics.
6
u/runnerofshadows 2d ago
It's why people keep dismissing all analysis as "it's not that deep" or "the curtains are blue"

I know you’re joking, but just for informational purposes, the real reason is that they fixed the card once it was brought to their attention, so this version was only printed for a short period of time.

So for the "oil bath" they actually submerged him in vegetable oil. This particular version of the costume was made of plastic pieces held together by golden tape. The vegetable oil dissolved some of the stick on the tape and the piece that should wrap around his lower pelvis on the left came loose.
However, Daniels and Lucasfilm believe some rogue Topps employee touched the image up to make the "tip" more the way it is here.
52
u/CeruleanEidolon 2d ago
Thanks for this. I've seen this image so many times and never heard a satisfactory explanation for the extra bit.
106
u/gearstars 2d ago
fall of 2019, Anthony Daniels wrote about what happened in a little more detail. He said it was the oil bath’s fault. Daniels explained that the costume’s pants, at the time, were made of two pieces of thin plastic, front and back, that were attached with gold-colored tape. The oil dissolved the tape, and the pants came apart, leading to a bulging crease when he was lifted out of the bath. Daniels said Lucasfilm verified to him that an employee took the photo with the crease and accentuated it.

u/Merkuri22 2d ago
I was wondering the same thing. Like I know what it looks like, but what was it actually?
I'm guessing it's a part that actually goes around the side of his hip, and the angle he's standing at just makes it look like it's... yeah.

There's multiple stories. Some say it was a costume malfunction, some say it was someone at Topps that altered it.
