Unless by GoW you mean Gears of War, God of War & TMNT arenāt coming out this year.

u/JoeHatesFanFiction Jun 05 '26
It looks surprisingly story heavy for the genre. Which is a cherry on top of the rest of the goodness on displayĀ
125
u/DESTRUCTI0NAT0R Jun 05 '26
The gameplay is very much XCOM but there's basically a Mass Effect Style interaction back at the hub area between missions.

Eh, it looks about as story heavy as Midnight Suns, which this director also made.
6
u/Sunzi270 Jun 07 '26
And which is quite underrated. I hope they have more luck with this one. They deserve it.
2
u/iWasBitByAMoose Jun 09 '26
Hopefully, this game isn't a 5 minute fight followed by 30 minutes of running around picking flowers for annoying teenagers.
33
u/Vidistis Jun 05 '26
Honestly my main worry is that there'll be too much story and non-tactical gameplay. Couldn't get into marvel's midnight suns because of that. But between the two I would enjoy a Star Wars setting and narrative (especially in the clone wars era) more than marvel for an XCOM like tactics game.

lol Iām the opposite, Iām here way more for the Star Wars role play aspect than the XCOM style combat.
3
u/noob_world_order Jun 06 '26
Iāve never played XCOM but it looks like the Mario Rabbids game my kid plays.
4
u/splashtext Jun 06 '26
the rabbids game takes a lot of inspirations from xcom, your kid may end up liking zero company when it releases/they get older
3
u/CyberpwnPiper Jun 06 '26
This, šÆ, the story is too often an afterthought in Tactics games, this feels weaved in by design, not tacted-on at the end. I'm in!!!

u/Viper_Visionary Obi-Wan Kenobi Jun 05 '26
I've never played a game of this genre before but I'm willing to try this one because it's Star Wars. Also surprise Anakin appearance at the end.

28

I know it's not popular among X-Com fans but I also really liked Chimera Squad as a simplified sorta beginner version of the genre, I guess?

I have over 2k hours between XCOM 1 and 2, love those games. Iām gonna play the hell out of this if itās anything like XCOM
5
u/Sirtopofhat Jun 05 '26
I got the game on a Steam sale one year and I don't have 2k hours but I have lost so many nights trying to kill the assassin in WOTC. I did not think I would like it but damn if I didn't
3
u/IAmBadAtInternet Jun 05 '26
The Hunter always game me more trouble than the Assassin. That and the Andromedons, they ended so many of my runs
5
u/dustblown Jun 06 '26
I'm playing Classified France '44 and that has been my experience. I'm sure there is a huge skill issue though as I've never played that genre before. I get this feeling I should have started with a better reviewed game though, but the only reason I tried it was the WWII draw.
3
u/Sirtopofhat Jun 06 '26
Skill issue is a thing but shots at least in X-com feel RNG more then others. You can cut it down with flanking and solider abilities took me a minute to get those ideas but im still really bad at game. You should try Xcom War of chosen for the best example of this type of game
2
u/BM_DM Jun 06 '26
War Tales is a medieval dark fantasy game with similar combat, but all attacks automatically hit which makes combat feel less bad.

u/UNC_Samurai Rebel Jun 06 '26
This is why I loved Xenonauts, percentages actually meant something again.
2
u/Mihta_Amaruthro Jun 06 '26
Ready to pull your hair out when you miss a shot that has a 99% chance to it?
That only happens in XCOM because it's actively lying to you about those % numbers. IIRC the game maxes out at something like 88% chance to hit.
As a design mechanic I absolutely hate it. Lying to the player I never really find acceptable unless it's for a specific narrative purpose.
5
u/Raetian Jun 06 '26
This is not true at all. XCOM's percentages have been statistically evaluated at length, and found to be honest, except on lower difficulties where by default settings the game secretly and temporarily increases the player's chances after a missed shot or a death

18
u/Super_Jay Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
Start getting acquainted with the concept of the action economy: basically you want to control the potential actions taken on each turn so you're increasing the amount your team can do while reducing the amount that the enemy team can do. Turn-based tactics games revolve around this basic idea.

I know some people are suggesting x com to get a feel for the style. But IMO if you wanna get a feel for turn based combat. Plus if you want an awesome Star Wars story and you've never played it.
Give KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) a go. Somewhat similar to the style of this game. Plus it has an incredible story with really good writing.
40
u/PratalMox Jun 06 '26
KOTOR's a pretty safe recommend for a Star Wars fan, but it very much doesn't feel like an XCOM game.

u/Viper_Visionary Obi-Wan Kenobi Jun 06 '26
Dear god that game is older than I am. Does the gameplay still hold up?
14
u/zerogee616 Jun 06 '26
Absolutely not. That iteration of the D20 system is clunky as shit. If you're absolutely in love with crunchy Dungeons and Dragons mechanics you might like it but otherwise, it's an absolutely tedious slog to get through
2
u/tenate Jun 06 '26
Strong disagree, itās just not gameplay for everyone but hardly a slog of a game to get through.
2
u/Neamow Jun 06 '26
Gameplay is... dated, but it's definitely more than playable still. Maybe will feel a bit clunky. But if you can look past that it's an absolutely FANTASTIC story. Genuinely one of the best in gaming period.
Sequel is amazing too.
1
u/TotallyNotABob Jun 06 '26
It absolutely does, trust me it's worth playing. Especially if it's your first time.

u/ThomasWilson77 Jun 05 '26
Wait if a character dies in a mission, does that character die for the rest of the game? Ā
296
u/Harflin Jun 05 '26
Seems that way. That would be on par with how xcom does it
43
u/ThomasWilson77 Jun 05 '26
Does that mean you can actually lose the game, like what if your whole team dies?
193
u/PerkPrincess Jun 05 '26
In XCOM, it sets you back pretty far. Possibly even to the point of it being unwinnable if you're playing on a high enough difficulty.
From what devs have said, the only character who officially causes a 'game over, restart' is your MC.
18
u/KamenRiderHelix Jun 06 '26
Sorry, I just got here--how customizable is the MC shaping up to be? I know this is the Midnight Suns director, so I have to assume the answer is 'decently', but.
18
3
u/Mihta_Amaruthro Jun 06 '26
Possibly even to the point of it being unwinnable
Uhh..."possibly"? The devs literally made XCOM2 the way that it is because the vast majority of XCOM 1 campaigns were lost.
75
u/RiskyBiznot Jun 05 '26
if the whole team dies, youāre typically game overād; if one guy dies (who isnāt the main guy, who is Hawk in this scenario), you keep going without them, including named characters. If your clone trooper dies, his impact on the story dies with him and his potential impact on other characters dies too, like his potential impact on the Umbaran sniper
38
u/Redeem123 Jun 05 '26
I love that shit. When it works well, at least. Too often games fail to make things truly feel like theyāre unique to your experience (because itās hard to do branching stories like that) but itās so cool when it works.
18
u/IAmBadAtInternet Jun 05 '26
Individual characters are expendable but often youāll have invested all your experience points in a small number of heroes, so if they die youāre in really rough shape.

There's a main character, key companions, and recruitable soldiers.
The main character can't die / it's game over. The key companions (like the Jedi Padawan) can die and then the story adapts / you miss out on their side quests. The recruitable soldiers can die but new ones can be recruited.

I figured we'd see Anakin or one of the other protags eventually. I've been guessing there's going to be a mission where you're deployed to an active warzone, basically giving you a guest appearance in one of the Clone Wars story arcs.
Like, maybe you drop into Ryloth or Christophsis to get information on Fathom during the period where Anakin and company are doing their assault and you briefly collaborate, get intel from Yularen, get to use Anakin or Ahsoka for a single mission, that sort of thing.
If you do get to use Anakin rather than him being an NPC controlled by the computer or something, I hope there's an achievement like "Accidentally Saved The Galaxy" if you get him killed.
7
11
u/RadiantHC Jun 06 '26
I'd prefer if it was one of the deleted arcs.
3
u/YoungGriot Jun 07 '26
That could work too. Them doing a mission on Utapau that turns out to be a telling of the Crystal Crisis arc would be interesting, though they probably wouldn't have the space to do the emotional beats for Anakin / Obi-Wan people remember from those deleted scenes.

Turn based tactics, so not Persona/Pokemon style combat where everyone stands across from each other picking attacks, but XCOM/BG3 style combat with grid based movement and an action economy.

3 types. Main guy, key companions, and recruitable.
Main guy and/or some of the key companions might be needed for certain key main missions. Main guy can't die or it's game over. Companions can die and the game will adapt / you will miss out on their specific stories / not having them might lock you out of certain endings.
There's a companion clone, Jedi Padawan, the Umbaran sniper, and more.
The recruitable ones are droids, clones, mercs, etc. They are fully customizable and can of course die.
2
u/KamenRiderHelix Jun 06 '26
Main guy is customizable, key companions aren't, and recruitable are is certainly an interesting dynamic, I have to hand it to them.

So nice to see actual talk of the game, other places people cry about it not being a Battlefront.
For me this is a dream come ture, as long as they stick the landing on this, Xcom 2 is one of my favorite games and Star Wars my favorite universe. The only thing that could have made it better is if you played as the Empire but a game in the OT era would just have you play as rebels against the Empire so this is good enough.

It's nice to see a game set in the Clone Wars for once, instead of Galactic Civil War or the In-between Period. Not sure if I'm interested in a Star Wars XCOM game but it looks like something atleast. Not a big fan of the graphical style though, looks pretty generic imo. Hopefully it's good
