Dave Meltzer Says Penta Is Better WWE World Champion Choice Than LA Knight in 2026
https://wrestlingheadlines.com/meltzer-penta-la-knight-wwe-world-champion/428
u/cjsc9079 < Future Rob Conway Flair 18h ago
Dave just assuming Penta will win his MITB title shot.
Getting a bit ahead of ourselves aren't we Dave? It's like he's implying this is scripted or something
129
u/Kuzu5993 17h ago
Well he actually got the damn thing unlike Knight
43
u/onlypham 17h ago
Baron Corbin and Damian Sandow both won it once too. Did wonders for their careers.
41
u/Kuzu5993 17h ago
Would have you have said this if Knight was in Penta's spot? Either the briefcase elevates you or it doesn't
9
u/IntoAMuteCrypt 16h ago
Corbin and Sandow both lost their cash-ins. Through no fault of their own, they had zero real chance for the briefcase to elevate them. They just got it because they needed to give the briefcase for someone even though they didn't want to swap the belt out.
Does the WWE genuinely want to elevate someone up from the midcard to the title this time? Or does it just want to maintain a schedule and keep the PPV around?
37
u/LaMacchiaPro 16h ago
Wasn’t the story that Corbin was 100% going to win until they decided to have him fail as punishment for speaking out against the doctor they brought in to downplay CTE?
12
u/thewholeprogram SomethingSomethingCowboyShit 15h ago
Yea, they originally had plans to put the title on Corbin until they decided to punish him for speaking out
→ More replies (1)23
u/WhoStoleMyBicycle 14h ago
Which I will always be a Corbin supporter for.
He played in the NFL, had knowledge of how dangerous concussions were, and was not going to let a paid off doctor come in and spend that bullshit to his fellow wrestlers.
2
u/lottolser 9h ago
Yep, plan was for Corbin to win. Him making Dr. Maroon look like a fool, and he ended up being right cost him his world title shot.
21
u/BBGrunt1235 16h ago
Penta won a month-long tournament to have World title match in his home country, with WWE giving him elaborate entrance gear for the occasion. I'd say he's being pushed a bit more than Damian Sandow.
2
12
u/MrPea106 14h ago
I’d like to think Penta is SIGNIFICANTLY more valuable than Baron Corbin or Damien Sandow ever were. He actually makes them money and the crowd is always hot for him.
10
4
u/nartnoside 16h ago
Same with Otis
2
u/No-One7813 11h ago
Yeah Otis never even got to cash in. And he was organically pretty over before that. He still gets great reactions for the little time he gets
5
u/nartnoside 11h ago
But when they have guys who fail a cash in or in Otis’ case, giving it away, it completely makes the character look stupid and kills momentum. Even Ova winning the RR only go pass up on on a championship opportunity. Hard to justify in Kayfabe and completely moronic business wise
0
u/Bluey8008 11h ago
Always has been.
Other than getting crowds to yell Yeah!, there’s nothing of substance or worth getting behind Knight
9
u/ResolveRealistic3535 16h ago
The weirdest thing commenters do online is address someone that isn’t reading their comment.

Wwe isn't leaving Penta money on the table. LA Knight probably does decently, but my guess is Penta is a top merch mover.

I’m not sure he will win. His whole thing is ‘cero miedo’, which feels like it might cause him to charge into a daunting matchup- like cashing in at the start of Oba/Roman to create a triple threat.
216
u/dzone25 18h ago
No one has ever said "Knight is a better World Champion Choice than Penta" - everyone, including LA Knight, probably agrees given the kinds of doors to audiences Penta opens.
But Knight should still be a World Champion at some point, his popularity can't just be ignored forever.
104
u/jjamm420 18h ago
Jake Roberts, Curt Hennig, Owen Hart, Scott Hall, Rowdy Piper, JYD, Dusty Rhodes, Big Boss Man, Rick Martel, etc - ALL NEVER WON WWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS…It’s not a participation trophy…
81
u/TonyTheTony7 18h ago
If they stopped forcing him into the main event scene and instead focused on elevating the midcard, Knight is basically the perfect guy to put in that the 1995 Razor Ramon role, where he's easily the no. 2 face in the company, over enough to carry shows when needed but also completely separate and apart from the main event scene.
20
13
u/1MechanicalAlligator Time is on my side 15h ago edited 14h ago
How would it make sense for the "No. 2 face in the company" to be a midcarder, when there are several faces above that, in the main event scene across two brands?
6
u/CobraOverlord 11h ago
That is what Razor Ramon was during his babyface run before bolting for WCW. Bret, Diesel, and Shawn were all in that top babyface role.

Rhodes was a 3 time NWA World Heavyweight Champion while that title was still prestigious
It was only Vince being Vince (petty towards people who had the audacity to be popular in places he didn't control) that kept him from winning the WWF Championship
2
30
u/Wolfpac187 15h ago
LA Knight is one of the few guys in modern WWE that actually achieved an authentic connection with the audience. I get it back in the 80s when everyone was over but nowadays you have too many people coming out to silence to not reward Knight.
16
u/Cygnus94 17h ago
Wouldn't include Dusty on that list. His prime was in the era where the territories were still relevant. He might not have been a world champion in the WWF, but was in CWF, GCW and Mid-Atlantic multiple times over.
→ More replies (6)15
u/spideyv91 18h ago
Was a different time. Roddy piper never won because he never wanted to lose. Hogan even said he wanted piper to win the title but piper felt if he lost it would lower his drawing power.
Most of the other guys were never really in the position to win the world title in their day. Also nowadays a lot of them might of won it. More people win world titles now than back then, and there’s more opportunities than there were before .

u/Gambit228 17h ago
A lot of those guys had personal demons or passed away which kept them away from the championship though, some of them(Scott Hall) didn’t even want to be champion and were about making money. Can’t really compare them to Knight.
6
u/jjamm420 17h ago
Knights 43, (44 in Nov)…what’s he waiting for?!!? There’s a reason he hasn’t been world champion anywhere besides a brief TNA run…🤷♂️ when guys are nearing retirement age, people are looking at Knight as a up and comer waiting for him to get his chance…

Scott Hall never winning in WWE or WCW is insane to me. Especially in WCW.
4
u/AgentFoo 12h ago edited 10h ago
To be fair, he was in really dire straits in WCW for most of his run.
1
u/thedkexperience 12h ago
Yeah that’s fair. He was just so, so over in WCW that I’m surprised he didn’t ping pong it once or twice with Nash or Hogan.
2
u/ChasingPerfect28 9h ago edited 9h ago
WCW almost did it. Hall was in a Triple Threat match against Jeff Jarrett and Sid Vicious (who was the babyface champion at the time). I think there was serious consideration to make Scott the champion.
But Scott has had lingering injuries that flared up at the worst opportune moments. His body started breaking down in 1998. In addition to wear and tear, one of his major injuries was a car backing over his foot in 1999.
Factor in his alcoholism and substance abuse issues, and it was just a recipe for disaster for Scott.
Superbrawl 2000 was Scott's last appearance in WCW.
1
u/Wolfpac187 2h ago
I don’t think Hall ever gave a shit about winning a title. He wanted to as little work as possible for as big a bag as he could get.

Matt Cardona needs to heal up so he can remind everybody just how easy it is to get someone under.
8
u/SternSternButFair Shut the fuck up 15h ago
Penta being Mexican has nothing to do with it, he is a more entertaining performer and looks cooler than 99% of people in the business. LA is all catch phrases and Penta still has one up on him there
3
u/Reptheft 18h ago
I'm pretty sure it's debatable enough that some people would say it. Knight and Penta have completely different strengths.
2
u/LegitimateCream1773 16h ago
Oh yes it can. I think he'll get a short reign somehow, but it's by no means guaranteed.
0
u/Superplex123 17h ago
I think HHH really put a lot of stock in putting up banger matches as the world champion. That's probably why they haven't pull the trigger on Knight yet. But that match with Roman should raise Knight's stock in HHH's eyes. Whether it's to the level of world champion is another matter. I can count on Penta to put on a banger every time he wrestles. I wouldn't yet for Knight.

u/KenDTree 17h ago
Yeah, as bollocks as unreal is, I do believe he had genuine worries about Jey Usp being able to work a main event match. Then when he found out that he couldn't, he YEETed the title off of him pretty quick
1
u/cgurts COMPROMISED TO A PERMANENT END 14h ago
The best time for an LA Knight world title run was 3 years ago. But the best time now is now.
That said, I get Dave's point. Penta would more fresh. But that's not a knock on Knight, it's just a testiment to how much WWE have squandered his momentum and how many times they've teased the idea only to leave him in midcard purgatory immediately after.
LA Knight chasing Roman and eventually topping him would be great, but knowing WWE, he'll be back in purgatory, with a heel turn just to give him something to do.
1
u/_whatever_wherever Do it with purpose and give a shit 8h ago
Penta holding the WWE title and Knight the World Heavyweight would.... just feel right to me
0
u/RRJC10 9h ago
Remember the last guy who was really popular and got a world title because of it? It was Jey Uso. How’d that run go?
As soon as LA Knight gets a real main event push he’ll suddenly be the guy who is clunky in the ring, rehearsed on the mic, flubs too many lines, and has dangerous botches.

He was saying it specifically in reference to the geography stuff too. Penta is a legitimate needle mover in Mexico compared to the rest of the roster. LA Knight doesn't have anything comparable, nor does a lot of other top guys.
10
u/Black_XistenZ 14h ago
I would assume that Penta also sells even more merch to domestic audiences than LA Knight does.
7
u/conoresque 14h ago
Anecdotally, Penta is the merch I see the most walking around NYC by a landslide. Roman/Bloodline is a distant 2 and I cannot recall seeing anything else in the past few months (except one time I saw a guy in a Wrestle1 shirt).

u/Giraffesarehigh HE'S FAT! 18h ago
on what metric exactly? because prior to his match with Reign Penta was just fine. LA Knight has been Hot for damn near 3 years and he's still insanely over.
LA Knight's entrance alone at MITB was the pop of the night.
20
u/Confident_Horror_137 18h ago
Unfortunately for LA Knight wrestling is more than just entrances (and with the right booking Penta can have him beat there as well).
You’re about 100x more likely to get an all time memorable match from Penta than you are Knight.
64
u/ComprehensiveArt6849 18h ago
Unfortunately for LA Knight wrestling is more than just entrance
Somewhere, Jey Uso just fell on his knees in a Walmart - out of breath.
11
u/Superplex123 17h ago
And that's why he's no longer anywhere close to the world title picture.
7
u/ComprehensiveArt6849 17h ago

u/Blitzkreeg21 15h ago edited 8h ago
The man was easily a hall of fame level tag wrestler who got his character extremely over.
Jey had more accolades, was more popular and actually had matches people remember (albeit in tag competition).
If he never should have gotten a chance then LA Knight shouldn’t even be in consideration for a chance. lol

It’s all about dancing partners. LA knight and Roman had a great match. So did penta and Roman. People really need to put more respect on Roman’s in ring game bc he’s been making people shine
6
u/Blitzkreeg21 15h ago
Yeah man he’s having that Cena arc. Cena always had great dance partners but he stood and kept up with with the likes of HBK and AJ among many others to classics or at least very memorable matches.

u/Wolfpac187 2h ago
He’s nothing like Cena, Cena’s in-ring work got far more criticism than Roman’s ever has.

When was the last time WWE considered being less than exceptional in the ring as disqualifying for a world title reign?
Why is the standard higher for LA Knight? What has he done wrong other than not being Samoan?
3
u/TrRa47 I'm probably stupid for asking this 17h ago
Looking back at the last 10 years, if we're strictly keeping it in the ring, there's really only 2 or 3 guys that you could even kinda make an argument he's a better wrestler than that have held a world title. So while it's not necessarily a disqualifying factor, it would certainly be closer to an exception being made than just the norm.

I'm not going to read the article because I listen to the actual podcasts while cooking, but he's being saying this for a while because of the recent Nielsen changes (I believe a month ago) where they are now calculating Hispanic households higher than they were beforehand, believing they were underrepresented.
So the idea is having a Hispanic champion will lead to more Hispanic people watching, which will get calculated higher in the Nielsen ratings.
There is also the idea that WWE is competing with CMLL in Mexico, so if they put a rocket under Penta, it's more likely to steal away from the CMLL audience, and then they can bring Penta into AAA as a world champion more often to draw more eyes to it.
It's less about LA Knight's stock dropping and more about how well drawing a larger Hispanic audience (and Penta is probably the best person for that right now) can influence their current metrics and goals.
12
u/LegitimateCream1773 16h ago
This.
People think Dave is saying 'Penta is the better wrestler'. That's actually nothing to do with it. It's specifically because of how marketable and how over he is with the Hispanic audience, which is very relevant now that WWE owns AAA. LA Knight is primarily over with audiences WWE already does fine with. The business argument for Penta as champion is a stronger one.
6
u/Horror_Sail 16h ago
Basically every metric.
Penta's a world traveled ring worker capable of having the best matches in the company; Knight cant.
Penta's got a different character and perspective than basically any WWE world champ in quite some time. Knight's cosplaying as an Attitude Era champ
Odds are neither dude being champ moves the needle; but Penta at least has the potential to be something different than Roman and Punk and Cody. Knight cant be.
2
u/Jomosensual 17h ago
Thats all LA is anymore though. He botches stuff every match he's in and flubs his lines now too. Pentas match with Roman was better
1
u/Wolfpac187 2h ago
In-ring wise it’s a waste of time even comparing Knight to Penta they’re in different worlds

u/CenaSucks Lets go Cena! 16h ago
The magic Nielsen workrate super destroyer star metrics only Dave is smart enough to understand.
Nothing against Penta but a draw in wrestling has traditionally been everything that is LA Knight. That didn’t and probably won’t ever change.
13
u/JessonBI89 18h ago
I don't like the idea of forcing the fans to choose between them. Penta is hotter at this exact moment, but he and LA have such different styles that we can make room for both.
5
u/GetEquipped Mascot Murderer 16h ago
I haven't paid attention to WWE in a while (Well, AAA, but yeah)
Aren't there 2 World Championship titles, one for each brand?
3
u/JessonBI89 16h ago
There are, but AAA is becoming more integrated into WWE. They're basically treating it as a developmental program specifically for luchadors.
2
u/GetEquipped Mascot Murderer 14h ago
I mean, Penta could challenge for the Belt that Roman doesn't have and possibly set up a champion vs champion with EGA.
But seeing how TKO/WWE sees AAA and Luchadores, yeah

u/headshotscott 9h ago

Penta should have beaten Roman. It would have been such a good shock and would not have hurt the eventual Roman-Oba plan

2
u/Handmotion 18h ago
LA Knight should have been champion last year when he was at his hottest, but typical to WWE booking; they never strike when the iron is hot. I honestly think one of the main reasons they don't is because the higher ups are so disconnected from the real world, they can't understand why someone like LA Knight could be so beloved by the fans. WWE can still book good stories when you let them cook, but their inability to change course when someone gets over organically has honestly cost so many potential big name wrestlers.
2
u/imdatboy786 17h ago
Debatable. Penta would be a workrate champion. Nothing wrong with that if they booked around it. His promos are mediocre at best.
2
u/Wolfpac187 2h ago
He’s a fine babyface promo that’s all he needs to be his physical charisma is undeniable
1
u/BackToTheFutureDoc 17h ago
Going to repeat what I said after the LA Knight Roman Reigns match here;
Yes this was a great match but why are we pretending that LA Knight hasn't had a lot of great matches on the roster already? With AJ Styles at Mania 40, with Jacob Fatu at 41, with Roman right here, with Gunther, with Seth, with Bron, with Shinsuke and the list goes on and on. He's had so many. People like to bring up his botches but they aren't detrimental in fact they add to the story because it's presented as a shoot, a worked shoot but in a shoot or fight, you stumble, slip, fall over and get dragged around, if that happens in a wrestling match, due to slippery ropes because let's be honest that's what it is, then surely it adds to it and he doesn't look any less anyway.
AND
FOR 3+ Years he's remained over, absolutely over. If LA Knight does get the world title now, it's going to be retconned with revisionism that this was the match that made people believe he was good enough even though he's been over for 3+ years, sold loads of merch, incredible on the mic, oozes charisma and is a good wrestler, better than good in fact, he doesn't get credit for that enough but instead people will say nah it was the 2026 match that was the moment if it happens or he always botches when he really doesn't.
Why? Because it's already happening with people and he's shown he belongs and can hang and proved critics wrong.
LA Knight is THAT guy and he's proved it for years and I'm not going to let people pretend otherwise when it's just not true. We're not doing revisionism on LA Knight.

Lucha is the hottest thing in wrestling now so it's probably right - but that doesn't mean that LA wasn't still a correct choice too. You can have more than one champ per decade.
Title runs don't always have to be 47 years long. Every company has a fetish for this lifetime title shit now and it's boring. It's one of the biggest blocks to a good show now because everything is predictable.

u/GetEquipped Mascot Murderer 16h ago
I was doing some weird fantasy booking/brainstorming last night where Penta wins the WWE World Title, Chad Gable challenges Penta, Chad loses.
Then a AAA/WWE main event where Penta challenges EGA. EGA asks Gable to train with him for prep and to be in his corner.
Penta VS EGA is a slobberknocker of a match, EGA gets Kayfabe injured due to Penta's viciousness. After the match, Gable tends to EGA.
Then Gable swears revenge and starts training in the mountains of Monterrey in the winter with a norteño version of "Corazon en Fuego"
Gable challenges for the AAA title. Comes out in a Mexican singlet and holding EGA's bloodied mask.
An hour long match ensues where Gable gets a pin at the last second.
He gets the mic, thanks the Mexican audience and says "Si yo puedo cambiar, y ustedes puedan cambiar, el mundo puede cambiar!!!"
This is something CM Punk can't do because he's never seen the Rocky movies

u/fazzle1 16h ago
I feel like there's basically a 0% chance Penta wins the WHC. Roman isn't losing it until Oba takes it at Mania, and Penta isn't going to be the one to beat Oba.
So that leaves SD where the world title scene is already extremely crowded. I feel like there's a legitimate chance he cashes it in for the AAA mega championship in an attempt to "legitimize" the brand to casuals like when Charlotte used her Rumble win to go after the NXT title
1
u/Thebritishdovah 16h ago
Technically true but L.A Knight should be a champion. He wears the shoes of a champion and is fantastic on the mic.
I actually liked the botched powerbomb because it made it feel organic. Even a 6 month reign would be nice for L.A Knight.
Penta?
He was always gonna to end up there.

LA Knight, as champion & permission to go oof on mic would be an AMAZING champion. Sadly we will never see it. But he would be a very fresh take on what a champ sounds like in wwe.

I vehemently disagree with most of what Dave Meltzer says, but this time, he’s right. Penta is already wildly over in both the U.S. and Mexico, and he moves a crazy amount of merchandise, too.
But why can’t both guys be champions? Last I checked, WWE has both the Undisputed WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship. If LA Knight isn’t going to get a fair shake at a world title on Raw, move him to SmackDown and take the title off Sami. Problem solved.

Both are good options. To me Penta makes more sense to have a shorter title reign, but I also want him to go ultra violent and introduce the Cero Miedo match to the US. Maybe I have the wrong perspective for a Penta title reign.

When they put a world title on Jey, we all saw how badly that went. It wouldn't be any different for LA Knight.

Well yes, of course, but that isn’t going to happen either regardless that he has the briefcase.

It's not like Knight has been beat to shit all year, of course Penta is a better choice, basically had rockets on him since his debut

I wonder if he cashes in on Oba or switches to Smack down and goes for the WWE title. Obama v Reigns feels set and it would be a waste to have Reigns win at WM to have Penta cash in and then run a Penta vs Oba title feud.

I think penta could be better as a fun short-term champion. He's good for a few fun matches and entrances- get the crowd hype before the novelty wears off. LA knight would be way better if they really gave him the ball for an extended period.

Lol, this coming from the same guy who insists he'd be just as successful at politics or sports journalism, and his "gifts" have nothing to do with wrestling.

I don't see why both can't have a title reign? LA Knight is one of the most popular guys they have regardless of what the internet and Meltzer think. There's no reason Penta can't win the World title then Knight wins it off of him. Why does it have to be one or the other?

If both guys have a title reign how would that ever leave enough time for Roman to hold it for years at a time

Why can’t they both be good choices. Why does one have to be better than the other. I’m getting so tired of bullshit engagement bait comparisons
