Max Caster Speaks on TNA Situation
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DebtTvcxupS/Max put out a video on his Instagram speaking directly on the TNA situation this morning.

u/MuptonBossman 22h ago
Max may be a shithead at times, but I don't really put the blame on him here... TNA should've known what they were getting into when they signed him, and I thought his rap was pretty tame, all things considered. I feel for him now, especially because he's going to have a hard time getting back to a major promotion.

I don't think this is out of the ordinary. Social media team just wants to put clips out ASAP. It isn't until a higher up sees the show and goes "wait what the fuck did he just say?" do they go to the social media team and tell them to take it all down.

It’s not even edgy! I feel like I’m losing my mind, like there wasn’t a song literally called bombs over Baghdad
89
u/Frzzalor 21h ago
well, bombs over bagdad isn't a reference to a terrorist attack that happened a week ago

Yeah but Max made the rap after the attack. Didn't the Muhammed Hassan thing get taped prior to 7/7? Max was directly referencing a very recent incident.

22

Is it? It not even a war song in my opinion. The baghdad line a non sequitor, just something that Andre heard on the radio and liked the sound of.

That Night in Hawaii When I Heard Someone Say "Bombs Over Baghdad" on the Radio and I Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn't Control ... Sh¥t Was Wild
15
u/notatrashperson 20h ago
No…it’s not? Like what war do you think it’s in opposition to? The one that ended 7 years before it came out or the one that started 3 years later?
7
u/marciii1986 Better Than Perfect 20h ago
Because anti war songs only take position oppose to wars that are happening at the moment and not in general.
16
u/notatrashperson 19h ago
Can you quote the lines in the song that are about being anti war? Is it the ones about sitting in a drop top soaking wet? Or maybe the one that’s like we get crunk stay drunk at the club?
Or is it maybe that the song is basically your standard OutKast song and “bombs over Baghdad” is just a line that they thought sounded cool
10
u/RanchPonyPizza Where else would one hear voices? 20h ago
Here are the lyrics, all of 'em. I don't think there's any combat subtext to the song.
3
40
u/AnimalCrackBox 21h ago
WWE continued a show after a man died at ringside. Cena announced the US military killing bin Laden on live TV. AEW plays a theme song with “why is nobody killing the rich in their homes, is your hate pretend?” Every week and has done spots involving hanging from a chain, plastic bag attempted murder etc.
Death violence and destruction is part of the DNA of wrestling but we are going to pretend it’s a problem now because it happened to reference the guys cutting TKOs paychecks.
47
u/Structure-These 21h ago
I don’t think everything needs to be so black and white. It’s ok to just say it’s in poor taste to make light of a terror attack that took place a few days ago but the promotion probably should take some responsibility for this too
11
u/NightFire45 20h ago
It's very black and white. He fucked with the money. Those visit Riyadh ring mats were in jeopardy. I'm sure if he'd said bombing Sanaa I'd be okay. Hell if he'd made a line about killing Ansar Allah he'd be on the WWE main roster now.

WWE deserves a ton more flak than they ever got for what they did after Owen's death. Max Caster also deserves flak for his insensitive rap right after an airport bombing.
4
u/kabent01 21h ago
The show continuing after the death of Owen Hart is generally seen as bad move. It was a real tragedy that happened right in front of the audience and pretending it didn't happen was and is seen as disrespectful to trauma of those who witnessed it and disrespectful to Owen.
Pro wrestling is generally a melodramatic performance of conflict. It's escapism. Normal social rules do not apply. But when real tragedies are referenced within the parameters of wrestling's kayfabe it needs to be handled with concern for those effected. You wouldn't walk into your friend's mother's funeral and start cracking "Your Mama..." jokes, would you?
→ More replies (1)13
u/Structure-These 21h ago
It was edgy and in poor taste, but we’re talking pro wrestling here. A bunch of people died in a terror attack and it’s probably better to just shy away from that topic in general, again its pro wrestling and folks aren’t big on nuance in this little weird slice of a hobby

They did know what they were getting. They even promoted what they were getting on their socials. It was all good until they were told differently. Really lame of them to say yeah we're happy to go with this, and then when it backfires they just fire Max as if they had zero blame.
69
u/MARKYMARK_MARK 22h ago
Tna deserves a good share of the blame but Max is a grown man that has had this issue a few times already. He knows the risks of his actions.
45
u/HartfordWhalers123 21h ago edited 20h ago
Yeah like TNA was dumb to trust Max with rapping.
But I don’t think people realize that Max is also a 37 year old man.
He isn’t some newbie and he’s been through this many times where he’s gotten in trouble for it in AEW.
It’s hard to feel bad for him when he’s been warned and even banned from rapping so many times. He’s been given so many chances.
19
u/theredditbandid_ 20h ago
He’s been given so many chances.
But also, what do you want him to do? Go out there and rap sterile shit that is guaranteed to never ever offend someone?
Yes, bro made his bed and he is fully taking responsibility and not playing victim.. but that's his character. Someone who pushes the envelope.

I think there’s shades of grey - you could argue MJF used to call everyone a cuck and was colossally offensive, and tuned it to never punch down, take it back a hair but still have it be his schtick.
I think Max knows what gets him booked, but can’t adjust it in a way that feels credible to him.
10
u/Such_Independent2426 19h ago
Any halfway competent company hiring Max Caster of all people would full well know his history of pushing the line and have him run his script by them first. This is 95% on TNA being incompetent if they really didn't know
More likely, they knew and just didn't care until WWE came crying
40
u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 21h ago
Eh.
Its both.
Max should have never said what he said, it was stupid. I get "THE HEAT" or whatever but it was fucking stupid on his part.
TNA also should have known better. Its already been an issue with Max in the past and they should have asked what he planned to say before he walked out.
In the end max said the words, he should have known better. I don't think you can absolve him at all.
14
u/Volt-Ikazuchi 21h ago
That's the worst part. What heat? Did the crowd even react?
Riyadh is very, very far away from the US and mostly disconnected from the fans in general, so it wouldn't get a split-second reaction as if he said that the local sports team bombed instead.
Just a stupid move across the board. High-risk, low reward.

I say this sincerely, if Saudis weren't rich, he'd be given a slap on the wrist and everyone would move on.

I hope Max can find a way to iterate on his rap gimmick so he tones down the edginess and gets more creative with insulting his opponents' characters more than pop culture.
Save those lines for PPV entrances or really big moments.
That being said, I hope he can find somewhere that'll let him be his gimmick without fear. But at this point I don't think there's any major promotions that will risk it anymore.
Could see him maybe landing in MLP though.

Heels aka villains are characters in a story you root against and cheer for the face/hero to defeat.
If they're saying and/or doing something that makes the audience angry/upset, that means they're being effective.

I wouldn't say it's on the same level, but GCW isn't too far behind them, if only in terms of popularity. Obviously there is still a fairly large gap between the two, via global reach, TV deals, partnerships, etc.

TNA should really be getting more blowback over this. We'll probably never know for sure if they approved the line, if he told them in advance, if he went off script... Whatever. It doesn't even matter that "Max is known for controversy, they should have known". All of that is to the side.
What we do know is they went out of their way to promote this on socials - showing absolutely zero problem with it - and then dropped his ass like a hot potato once the international calls started coming in. Pretty ridiculous that they get to have it both ways.

We already know. Max Caster did that rap at, what 7pm on the 11th? For a live PPV on which surely everyone running TNA is either in gorilla or in the suite. They post it to every social media page they have. It suddenly gets pulled at like 10-11am the next morning.
WWE's faster about erasing embarrassing segments (see: Joe Hendry concert). Netflix is faster about censoring nothingburgers. TNA was completely fine with it until somebody with money told them they had to pull it

Felt like a genuine apology. He owned up to it, understood why he was let go and made it clear he wasnt trying to hurt anyone. Max: Just to address all the TNA stuff, I want to say thank you to Carlos Silva, I talked to him in person, he was very generous, very professional even after all this stuff happened and I understand why he did what he did. It's his show, he's gotta protect TNA , and uh, I went too far for him. I wanna apologize to him and everybody else in the office, I want to apologize to anyone who vouched for me to get that spot, I feel like I let those people down. Thank you to Moose for sharing your platform with me, and uh, I wish things didn't turn out the way they did, but i m proud of that match and I'm sorry for how things have ended up.
And for everyone who is offended, I just want everybody to know that when I do these raps, it's never to offend people, it's only to entertain. So in my mind, its entertainment value first. And then, if you're offended by it, that's your right. So, I can't apologize for anyone being offended, but just know that it's not my intention to make people upset. If it gets a reaction, I think I did my job. It's a very relevant part of the show, and highly talked about, so I feel good about that. But the consequences of everything, I'm accepting that. I can accept the facts of that. And then to anybody asking if I'm good, I'm good. I'm just embarrassed how all this happened, its, y'know, you don't want it to be one match and then you get fired. But again, that's the reality of the situation. I am accepting it, and uh, that's life. And in life, sometimes you gotta man up and just accept it and move on. So whatever's next, I don't know, but, we'll see. Thank you everybody who is reaching out and supporting me.

I don't really put all the fault on Max here. Like TNA knows his gimmick, they expected a rap. Not clearing anything beforehand seems like their responsibility. Max is a bonehead and has gotten in trouble in the past so I get that side of it, but I do feel bad for him in a way.

Thanks Carlos Silva for the opportunity, understands why they did what they did, apologizes to those that vouched for him and feels like he let them down, is proud of the match, says his raps are done for entertainment value and he doesn’t do it to offend people. Says he can’t apologize for people being upset because it’s their right, but he does it with entertainment first in mind and doesn’t intend to offend anyone, and he accepts the consequences of his actions. He basically apologized to TNA, thanked them/Moose and said he was embarrassed it happened and accepting of the outcome.
He did add that he couldn't apologize to anyone that was offended by the rap, adding that his intention is to entertain and not offend, but he understands if people were offended
Said he was doing good despite being unhappy it was a 1 and done, apologized to those that vouched for him to get that spot, and doesn't know what's next at this time
21
u/Werewolf-Jones 22h ago
TNA went way over the top by outright firing him for doing the thing he was obviously going to do. AEW reacted by suspending him a few times, getting him sensitivity training, and they have a much larger platform to worry about than fucking TNA does. I hope they take a step back and bring Max back on. His brand is to roll in battle rap type lines, things that make the crowd react with shock, and that's inherently going to cross the line here and there; there are better ways to handle that than immediately firing him after initially promoting the hell out of his rap on social media.

First wrestler I’ve seen in years that understands being a heel too. It’s character work. You say shit so people dislike you. The internet dislikes him. Job done.

Caster said something that seemingly ticked off TNA, its TV partners, business partners and based on Mustafa Ali's tweet, talent. Dude had no choice but to take it on the chin and apologize. I hope he's learned a lesson. Fightful's basically making it sound like he went rogue and didn't get the line cleared. Yes, TNA should have "known what they were getting" but Max also needs to have the maturity to go "you know, big opportunity for me, maybe I shouldn't rap about a bombing that happened yesterday."
19
u/HarjivS 21h ago
did Max’s rap tick off TNA or did the backlash tick off TNA? I bet no one even said anything to him afterwards about it at the show, because they had no problem putting it all over their socials for 12+ hours. But once they get heat for it, it’s somehow a moral issue that raised eyebrows

Basic TL;DR: He thanks Carlos Silva and Moose for the opportunity. Understands why TNA fired him. Says the rap wasn't intended to offend. Says he's okay.

WhatCulture: Max Caster SHOOTS on Carlos Silva, Moose, TNA, everyone who was offended, and his own mental health.

He's not an idiot. But someday, SOMEDAY, wrestlers are going to learn that "getting heel heat" isn't a pass to do and say whatever you want. Pro wrestling is its own little world, but that little world still lives in the real world, and some things cut across the veil of performance, things like gravity, physics, and tragedy.

He’s could make money with the controversy but I don’t think he’s the CZW type.

u/Lukexxxi 22h ago
Do CZW pay anyone "crazy money"?

CZW was the first major promotion Caster worked for and he worked there for a while

He’s got a proven history of getting things ove, and the indie scene is lacking in names who are in their prime. If he’s willing to grind then he could do very well.

He seems genuinely upset and embarrassed by the fiasco. I think he got it wrong; but I also don’t buy this ‘cancer’ talk. He seems to be popular/friendly with MJF and Statt and other wrestlers over the years, and the Bowens work has seemed to been overblown into people believing that Bowens dislikes Max. People have done a lot worse in the wrestling business, and I hope he can get another shot on national TV.

As is their cosmic want, WWE comes out looking worst in all of this. Firing him only further plants “don’t mess with our blood money” into the heads of fans, talent, staff and partners. They’re still hoping to put on a show in Riyadh weeks from now and are willing to put the roster at risk to do so. That is what they don’t want people thinking too hard about right now.

I’m sure it wasn’t his intention to offend anyone but it just shows poor judgment if he thought the minuscule heat or pop for that line would be worth it. 13 people just died and it’s still way too fresh to be cutting cheeky lines about it, especially when TNA is affiliated with the company Saudi Arabia is paying billions to for entertainment.

u/BantamsTravelling 22h ago
He'll be back in a few months time, with a watch my mouth kinda gimmick. Doors seem rarely shut for anyone with heat in TNA.

This started well, but doubling down on saying the thing he shouldn’t have said is probably not the look to go for here!

Say what you will, this was a pretty mature and rational response. I'm glad he addressed it, probably had to if he wanted a better chance to work elsewhere.

I still like Max a lot. As much as I've been ragging on him, I hope he's successful.

Looks like Brian Myers helped him with a response finally. Both sides are really stupid.

I’m surprised he took one for the team for TNA here tbh, I thought for sure maybe he might say something along the lines of “this was something I had the office cleared before I said it”, no, he’s just sorry for going too far.
I don’t really like Caster all that much these days, but that was rather professional of him. I also do understand why he didn’t apologize for the comment itself, just that it’s not a good look.

If notorious racist tessa Blanchard can be welcomed back with open arms to chants of "shes a racist" theres a chance we'll see Caster back again one day

u/Bchange51 21h ago
Yes max. I was very entertained by your line in your WRESTLING SHOW rap about 29 civilians dying in a couple of bombings

u/mrtrickio 21h ago
Is there any evidence at all that Max was even signed to a TNA contract and that this wasn't just a one shot deal anyway... Are we all being worked?!

Nobody would have thought about that joke for one second after he said it if they hadn't made such a goddamn big deal about it.

Kinda sad. And this is a shoot. In 2015 he stood at CAP with mjf bronson myers. And he said one of his goals was to work for TNA. He coulda picked wwe, NJPW anything but in a room of prospective students he chose TNA. He wanted this. Its rap. Yes he was foolish. I hope he bounces back. Hes way to talented. If i told you Caster was looked at as the top prospect over MJF would you believe me?

Pretty gracious response all things told. I'm sure in his position you don't want to burn any bridges you haven't already burned...but I'd have been tempted to ask Carlos how the boots taste now that he's thoroughly licked them.

TNA aren't blameless in this, they posted this to their social media shit thinking it was fine but when there was push-back they threw Max under the bus and dusted their hands clean of responsibility.

u/Morbid187 10h ago
This whole thing is pathetic but I can't help to laugh. Simply referencing the reality around all of us in a single rap lyric was enough to give Max Caster the TNA speedrun world record. Actually, I guess he's #2 because Sammy Guevara got fired before he even stepped through the curtain but I'll leave that up to the judges to decide.
I have nothing but support for Max Caster BTW
