Sheik Abul Bashir's "Controversial" Theme | TNA No Surrender 2008
https://youtu.be/2TyWEt0d6-QThe first time I heard about this I didn't believe it, I had to track down an original copy of the PPV and verify for myself... and yup. There it is.
It only lasted for that 1 show though, as you can see in the video.

He’s billed from “Iran” his theme name is “Streets of Pakistan” classic TNA

I mean might’ve been just the name of the stock track they used?
Unless it isn’t which, yikes

is it because the drums and clap sound exactly like the intro to Chyna's theme ? what made it controversial?
edit: OH ITS THE PLANES LMAO

Pair this with the interview with Tenay telling him to go back to where he came from and to speak English

u/Honkmaster Commander Azeez mark 2h ago
Damn, I either missed that or forgot about it. Tenay got aggressive!

u/CouldntBeMeTho 2h ago
holy shit, never heard OF this...this is one of the craziest themes ever. Can't believe they greenlit it

I like how Mike Tenay points out that Bashir considers the X-Division Title to be his hostage (@ 2:24).
To hell with subtlety!

''I know bookers who use subtext and they're all cowards''-Mike Tenay

"why won't she be mine? I wish I was more attractive like Don West. Still, one can only dream"
Tenay sings one track lover towards velvet sky

This is the kind of stuff I mean when I say Russo has done a great job of painting TNA as hitting the skids once Hogan and Bischoff arrived. Like yeah, they were shit and sped up the decline, but Russo's weird ass fingerprints were all over the show.

Mansoor from MXM mentioned he spoke with Daivari about this.
Allegedly, TNA never told him they were using that soundbite in his intro. He flipped a gasket to management after the match. TNA silently removed the intro

I can't imagine wanting to continue working with them but I guess he did know who they were when he signed, just didn't know it would be so cartoonishly racist

Interesting, thx for sharing. Never heard this clip before.
I wondered why it only lasted for that 1 night. I figured maybe Spike TV told TNA to cut the shit... for the sake of their TV deal, it's probably a good thing they removed it before Spike noticed.

The best part of this is before this entrance he gave an interview talking about how he lost everything in 9/11 because the Americans blamed him for the attacks despite being innocent of them.
Later he feuded with Samoa Joe and Joe ties him up and beats him with a stick while ranting about how "people like him" don't belong in America and he should go back where he came from. Joe was supposed to be a babyface at the time.

Also on the topic of TNA with the stereotypes.. remember Raisha Saeed? 💀 I wasn't much of a TNA kid except for guys like AJ, Joe, Angle and Sabian but I remember going "HUH?! O.o" when I got a trading card of her in a pack years ago as a kid., thinking it was probably a really stereotypical character.

That was Cheerleader Melissa, who also played Mariposa in LU. Hell of a crazy good talent

I watched Tap Out Corner video about the worst theme song a month ago, and this one killed me. What were they thinking?

u/CallMeByMyUser 2h ago
What... The... Fuck?
Edit: after this, i dont think I can claim any other theme song to be worst of all time.

No joke but when I was a local wrestler we had a guy do a terrorist gimmick and the promoter legit had a clip of 9/11 at the start of his entrance video. It was a while back and we aint in the US but I didnt work for the company at the time and still knew it was in really bad taste.

u/Honkmaster Commander Azeez mark 1h ago
Whoa, a local promotion with entrance videos??

u/pUmKinBoM 1h ago
It wasnt as hard as you think but we had a fan who just happened to be pretty good at that and posters so the owner started paying him to do it. At least Im pretty sure he was paid but dont quote me on that.

The things that sucks to me the most about that racist unnecessary intro is it takes away how much of a banger the rest of that song was lol.

These recent TNA posts feel like a “gotcha” when it’s different people running the show and in the same time the shit WWE got away with, with DX will not age well. Especially when Oba, Trick and Evans are the future main eventers for WWE

I've got no beef with TNA. I watched iMPACT! during 2004-2011, then again in 2018-2023 (Johnny Swinger, daddy!). I encourage anyone that's unhappy with their weekly rasslin to #CrossTheLine and give TNA a try - or better yet, go see them live! I was at BFG last year.
The recent Max Caster situation just reminded me of this Sheik Abdul Bashir absurdity, and I figured a lot of people have probably never heard of this.

so what I am getting from this is that the Middle Eastern Nightmare needs to come back one last time and face the American Nightmare

Russorific

u/Eastern_Walk_8095 2h ago
Actually, believe it or not, Daivari said Russo wanted to move past Middle Eastern stereotype gimmicks because he thought they were overdone and outdated. But Daivari talked him out of it because he felt they still got heat in this era.
4
u/pinkydaemon93 2h ago
If that's true it's like the 1 week russo would be above shit like that and instantly would have changed his mind

This was in 2008. 18 years ago. The people in charge of TNA then are not the people in charge of TNA now. The wrestling business, political climate, and what is considered acceptable on a televised wrestling show has changed.

One was owned by Dixie Carters parents company panda energy.
One is owned by a Sports entertainment company.
Two different owners, two different standards and taste.
Another example
ECW owned by Paul Heyman
ECW owned by WWE
Obviously one is gonna be more tame and by the books compared to the other.
