Release [Open Source] Color Tools – Free Windows color picker, palette converter and color theory toolkit

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share a free, open-source Windows application I've been developing called Color Tools.

I originally made it for my own graphic design work because I wanted an easy way to pick colors and transfer color palettes between different applications. Since then, I've continued adding features and expanding it into a more complete color toolkit.

Some of its features:

  • Color picker – Pick colors from anywhere on your screen (Alt + P), or use the color wheel and sliders.
  • Palette converter – Import and export ASE, ACO, GPL, Procreate Swatches and Affinity .afpalette files. Native .afpalette support is for Affinity 3.0+, but palettes can be converted to ASE for use in older versions.
  • Palette editor – Create, edit and organize custom color palettes.
  • Color harmonies – Generate complementary, analogous, triadic and other color combinations.
  • Color theory guide – Explore color meanings, historical associations, moods and suggested uses.
  • Contrast checker – Check color contrast ratios and WCAG accessibility ratings.
  • Color blindness simulation – Preview colors for different types of color vision deficiency.

The application is currently Windows only. A standalone executable is available in GitHub Releases, so there's no need to install Python.

It's completely free, with no subscriptions or ads, and the source code is available under the MIT license.

I have completed my own solution for my family. The result is quite well working package. It is not packed yet, but just to validate the demand, would you buy a standalone, local application for building a family tree on the price of a lunch?

Looking for software Anything to choose photos from hundreds of similar ones?

After every vacation, and especially with kids I find myself with thousands of photos with many similar ones "because maybe we take one where everyone is smiling".

In the end there's a lot of afterwork choosing the best ones and cutting down on storage while keeping some quality selection.

Or maybe something that groups them by similarity or automatic albums.

Do you know anything smart that helps with this?

Discussion Shapeshifting Software: Exploring an AI-native architecture for self-adapting applications

Post image
2 Upvotes

What if existing software could reshape itself based on natural-language instructions?

Around 8–10 years ago, when I was learning to program, I had this idea inspired by shapeshifters in science fiction.

What if software could change its own UI, workflows, and behavior depending on what a user needs?

Not just through configuration options, but through natural-language instructions.

Imagine telling an existing CRM:

Reorganize the dashboard for our sales team so customers awaiting follow-up appear first. Also, create a reminder workflow for customers who haven't responded in three days.

Instead of requiring a developer to implement these changes, the application would use its existing capabilities to make the changes, validate them, and provide a way to roll back if something goes wrong.

I've been calling this idea Shapeshifting Software.

The interesting part isn't simply adding an AI chatbot to an application. I'm thinking about an architecture where AI is built into the application from the beginning, with a controlled set of tools and capabilities it can use to modify the system.

Conceptually, this is similar to how coding agents like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex interact with codebases through tools, instructions, permissions, and execution workflows.

The application would define what the AI can change, what must remain protected, how modifications are tested, and when human approval is required.

A few days ago, I started exploring this idea through an architectural proposal, an AI agent skill file, and a small demo.

GitHub: https://github.com/TriptoAfsin/shape-shifter

This is an early-stage experiment, not a production-ready implementation. I'm interested in understanding whether the underlying architectural approach makes sense.

Some questions I'm trying to work through:

  • Configuration vs. code: Should an adaptive application modify declarative configuration, generate or modify source code, or combine both approaches?
  • Security: How do we prevent an AI from accidentally weakening permissions, bypassing business rules, or exposing sensitive data?
  • Reliability: How can changes be validated and rolled back reliably, especially when database schemas and interconnected workflows are involved?
  • Architecture: Would a built-in AI harness with explicitly defined capabilities be a good foundation, or is there a better pattern for this?
  • Consistency: How do we make sure similar instructions produce predictable outcomes without making the system too restrictive?

I'm particularly interested in perspectives from people working on software architecture, developer tools, AI agents, and enterprise applications.

Does this seem like a practical direction for AI-native software, or am I overlooking an architectural pattern that already solves most of this?

I'd appreciate critical feedback, alternative approaches, relevant research, and suggestions for improving the experiment.

Discussion What do AI decomps mean for the future of software development?

Post image
125 Upvotes

Most of the time, people say that AI won't replace software devs, claiming that it can be used as a tool instead of a whole engineer.

But the AI is capable of doing things a normal person doing reverse engineering can't achieve, which is deeply concerning, what do you think?

Looking for software Need a good database software that has features like airtable

Hello!

My primary experience is with Airtable and my new company will not purchase it going forward as it is to expensive (84K for 2 years). I need to see what alternatives there are with the constraints I have. Biggest constraint is that the software package has to be self contained and I cannot use outside plugins. I have immediate access to Sharepoint (with powerapps), Access, Excel, and PostgreSQL but I dont think any of them fit my needs, but would love more input from people a lot more knowledgeable in these software's. So this is my use case: I am wanting to build a relational database. Each 'sheet' has parent information that I can connect together in a form. Sheet A, has entires like cat, dog, Sheet B has Colors like blue, red, and I can have sheet C that can have inputs from a form that users can connect the data. I can add pictures and other info. I can then have a dashboard that can create graphs from the data or search bars that I can search for 'Dog" and it shows me all entires related to "Dog'. I also need this software to be able to handle formulas and tie in the different sheets. I can Pull in Dog+Blue=BlueBerry and output into Sheet D. So the biggest things are: Able to connect the data, have data input through forms, able to create dashboards that can show the data through graphs, have KanBan style dashboards where I can show Status of certain fields. Airtable was the perfect software for my needs, so I need a Airtable equivalent but I just dont have any experience with other softwares to dig into them.

Release glint: a free 195 KB tray monitor I built after one too many trips to Task Manager

I've been doing a lot of LLM experiments and builds targeting AMD hardware, and I was constantly launching Task Manager to see where my CPU, memory, GPU and NPU were. I was also constantly running out of disk space. Enough was enough, so I made a little monitor that meets my needs and stays out of the way until I need it.

glint puts a live bar chart in your system tray: five thin strips for CPU, memory, GPU, NPU and disk activity. A strip turns amber at 80% and red at 95%, so you can see at a glance when something is maxed out. Hover for the exact numbers, or click for a small window with history graphs and how full each drive is.

Demo GIF: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Cyronius/glint/main/docs/demo.gif

- **Small.** One 195 KB exe with nothing to install. It uses about 6 MB of RAM.

- **Drive space in the window.** Every drive's fill level, in the same amber and red. When I sat down to record the demo, my C: drive had 1.8 GB free out of 2 TB, so this one earns its place.

- **Light.** With the window closed it uses 0.05% to 0.4% of one CPU core.

- **Shows your NPU.** Tested on AMD Ryzen AI. It needs an NPU driver with WDDM 2.9 or later; without one, the NPU strip doesn't appear.

- **You choose what it shows.** Right-click to turn measurements on or off. The icon and the window both follow, and your choice survives a restart.

- **Start with Windows** is one click in the same menu.

- No telemetry, no ads, no network access. The menu has one optional link to my local NPR station, and that's the only thing it asks for.

Download: https://github.com/Cyronius/glint/releases/latest

The exe isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you. Click **More info**, then **Run anyway**, or build it from source; it's all on GitHub.

Windows 10 or 11, x64. Built with help from Claude Code. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions — glint 0.3.0 now shows network activity and temperature (from the firmware's thermal sensor, not the CPU core reading, which Windows hides without a driver), and has a button to open Task Manager. If you find it useful, a star on the repo really helps other people find it.

Release What if you could drag a Win+Shift+S screenshot straight into an upload box? 👀

Win+Shift+S only puts screenshots on the clipboard, so you can't drag them anywhere. I made Perch (my own project, free, MIT) to fix that. Every screenshot shows up as a small card at the edge of your screen, and you drag it into any upload box as a real PNG. Cards disappear after 15 minutes or whatever you set it to.

Discussion Do you make a donation to developers of free software?

There are literally thousands of useful free software programs available for PC and guides for games, which is great. Some of them ask for a donation, which is understandable but I've never donated until recently. Considering the amount of work that goes into some of them, I have had a change of mind. I'm in the UK and in the last couple of weeks I donated £10 each to HWiNFO64 and Stella's Tombraider site. Just wondering if anyone else does so, and for what programs.

Release I built an open-source tool for automating Windows tasks with a visual designer instead of scattered PowerShell scripts

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

This is NodePilot, a tool for automating tasks in Windows environments. It is completely open source under the Apache 2.0 license, and there are no features behind a paywall.

I was tired of relying on several PowerShell scripts without having a good way to monitor what was happening across my systems. Since a large part of my work involves programming, and AI tools have become much more capable (AI was also used to built this project), I eventually decided to build my own solution, inspired by tools like System Center Orchestrator or n8n.

NodePilot can also be used as a no-code platform because of its ability to create PowerShell scripts and even whole workflows with AI. It also offers several built-in actions like REST, SQL, WMI, registry, file, service, LLM activities, and more.

Live demo | Repo | Website | Video

For a quick start, you can download the desktop version for Windows 11 that bundles everything. You can find it under Releases in the repository.

Release Mouthy: free, open-source dictation that runs offline on Mac, Windows and Linux

Mouthy is a dictation app for Mac, Windows and Linux. Press a shortcut, talk, press it again, and your words appear wherever your cursor is.

Speech recognition runs on your own computer with NVIDIA Parakeet, OpenAI Whisper or Apple Speech. There's no account and no telemetry, and dictation audio is never saved.

A few things it does:

- On the Mac it can learn your voice and turn down a TV or other people while you dictate

- Hover the Mac's notch while you talk to watch your words come in

- Press Enter mid-sentence to send what you've said so far and keep talking

The Mac app is Swift; Windows and Linux are Rust and Tauri.

It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). I'd like feedback on what works and what doesn't.

Release clipdeck: an encrypted clipboard history and emoji picker to replace Win+V and Win+. (free, MIT)

I got tired of Win+V forgetting everything on reboot and topping out at 25 items, so I built a replacement.

What it does differently from the built-in one:

  • Unlimited history that survives restarts, including images and copied files (items up to 64 MB)
  • Search as you type, including text inside screenshots (OCR)
  • Paste with transforms: case changes, trim, single line, sort lines, remove duplicates, JSON pretty/minify, URL and Base64 encode/decode
  • Snippets with variables like {date}, {time} and {clipboard}
  • Strips tracking parameters (utm_, fbclid, gclid, si…) from links you copy
  • Emoji, kaomoji and symbol picker for Win+.

Privacy:

  • History is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and the key is bound to your Windows account (DPAPI)
  • It respects password managers' "don't record this" flag, can ignore specific apps, and masks card numbers, IBANs and API tokens
  • No network access by default. The optional update check only reads the latest version number from GitHub once a day.
  • Nothing syncs anywhere. That also means no cross-device sync, which Win+V does have.

Around 20 MB of RAM when idle. Windows 10/11, needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime. The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you the first time.

GitHub: https://github.com/Talkdedsec/clipdeck

I'm the author. Happy to answer questions or take feature requests.
