Discussion DCU is NOT making it to 2028 with this lineup
Watch the “comic experts” defend Jimmy Olsen because Darkseid makes a 2 second appearance in one of the issues😭😭😭

DCU fans coping.
I'm one of them but this is not it.
We needed a strong opening to the DCU after the last failed attempt.
Using niche characters for the sake of being niche and different is not good. We needed Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman right from the off.
There's a reason Tony, Steve and Thor were the main 3 of the Avengers and that's because they were the first and most developed.

Well Iron Man is one of the main staples of Marvel anyway but Iron Man at the time had a unique case of coming right after the Toby trilogy and Xmen trilogy so people were curious about Marvel and super heroes in general.
Not to mention Iron Man 1 is a really good movie. That being said Captain America and Thor 1 had to be good films as well otherwise the MCU would have failed it nearly failed after the Hulk movie.
Henry was good IMO got the look down could have had a little more personality though but I get they were going the injustice route with him. They needed to make a stand alone Batman movie and Wonder Woman movie before doing BvS and that's where the DCEU went wrong as well.
Niche superhero movies do well when an established universe is already set.

u/Lost_Purpose5336 Aug 04 '26
Guys just because the lineup isn't the most popular characters doesn't mean it won't succeed. Firstly, some of these projects are in active development and some may even be swapped out for other seemingly more important projects as the time comes.
It absolutely could get a lot of people interested in these lesser known characters if they build up enough goodwill.
For example, I could see Clayface doing quite well if it's good and word of mouth reviews are favourable. I think Obsession's success proves that these non-mainstream-esque horror movies can do really well if people are impressed with the quality of the product.
Lanterns will probably pull in a lot of numbers because of GL fans, True Detective fans and casual HBO viewers.
More popular character feature movies are in development and they'll announce them when they're ready. I'm guessing it might take a little more time because they might want to focus more on quality control after Supergirl.
2
u/Adamski895 Aug 04 '26
No, people will just lose interest in the DCU.
You add these characters once you have a strong foundation. You don't create a building from the top first.

Waller, Jimmy Olsen and simply "Lanterns". Who's playin' Batman? Who's playin' Wonder Woman? Why grant Clayface a standalone film while Bane and Deathstroke are crammed into the same? Truly absurd…

Supergirl is mid. And some of the CGI is genuinely trash
3
u/Nurolight Aug 02 '26
I mean, Thor 2 was mid. Didn't kill everything else in motion.
1
u/raaviolli-dasher Aug 02 '26
But its an era where people gave a chance to anything superhero related
Now it has to be really good for people to even pay for the ticket

I would watch most of these, perhaps even pay to see two or three. Most I would simply snatch out of the air for a lazy evening. Out of the lineup, I'm not excited for Clayface - the trailer looks like way too much time will be spent on origin. I never gravitated towards Booster Gold, but we'll see? They'd have their job cut out for them to make Waller a compelling-enough character to sit down for. Jimmy Olsen is a hard pass with extreme prejudice for me, why did anybody tell somebody that Skyler Gisondo could get asses into seats?

Even as someone who tends to prefer the dcu i can agree I don't like most of this line up of random besides booster but he's my favorite dc character so there is some bias

Clayface is a low-budget film. Barring any surprises, I don't think it's likely to perform poorly at the box office.
But as for the rest? Well, I think they'd only sell a few copies if released on Steam for just a dollar.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Try8584 Aug 01 '26
Its gonna tank completely. No on knows clayface and it looks like a copy of Darkman.

u/Luke10123 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Clayface looks really good, Lanterns could be good. If MoT is half as good as Superman '25, that'd be amazing. Honestly the first 6 of those projects I'm really hyped for.
Plus, you'd expect at least a few of them to be dropped in pre-production. That always happens.
3
u/ExplainToMe277 Aug 01 '26
Lets look at the bright side. With what we have we will have seen batman, superman, supergirl, wonder woman, 2 lanterns, and possible get a Martian Man hunter ( in the lanterns series). All we need is a speedster and we will have all of the pieces for a JL film. That would be us on track to with marvel, from year one, to an avengers film as they were four years apart.
Granted by Snyders Supermans 3rd appearance we'd already met Darkseid but whatever! We are on track.

u/Outside-Leopard-9783 Aug 01 '26

All of my horror movie friends that don’t care about comic book movies are hyped to see it. I think it has potential.
3
u/ExplainToMe277 Aug 01 '26
Between you and I want to see a really good horror director do Batman. Specifically his Batman script!
2
u/NoSpecial284 Aug 01 '26
That’d be great. Horror has been popping off the past 2 years so there are a bunch of good director options right now.
1
u/ExplainToMe277 Aug 01 '26
Who would you pick to do Ben Afflecks Batman scripts? (Horror director)
2
u/NoSpecial284 Aug 01 '26
I think I would either go w/ Drew Hancock (Companion) or Damien McCarthy (Hokum). Drew would give us some great intense action but Damian could do some amazing stuff w/ having us always looking in the shadows to see if Batman might be there. What about you?

I really need a WALLER feature in my life. Hopefully the DCU main character Rick Flag will be included!
-6
u/thequehagan5 Jul 31 '26
I cannot understand why people would pay money to see clayface?
Why? It does not look like a comic book film, and it does not really look like a horror film. I am not sure what it is meant to be.
Who is the target market? Comic book fans who like horror?
6
u/dakesla Jul 31 '26
The majority of the public didn’t know Blade was a comic book movie when it came out, they still showed up in masse to support it once word of mouth hit. If it’s good, it’ll make bank.

Tf is up with these logos. Bottom 2 look like cookie brands. Yeah eh. Can I get a duo white/chocolate Wallers and a Jimmy.
5
u/Ok_Term6437 Jul 31 '26
Can’t believe that we went from MOS, BVS and Zack Snyder’s Justice League to this boring universe that nobody cares about.
1
u/thequehagan5 Jul 31 '26
It is called enshittification and it permeates through everything these days,
Matt Reeves, is the only hope for a movie that is watchable. Unless James Gunn manages to get his tentacles into that and ruins it also.
1
u/Ok_Term6437 Jul 31 '26
Yeah they should’ve just kept Matt Reeves’s Batman in the universe instead lol. James Gunn shouldn’t be anywhere near the character of Batman
2
u/_DankUser_ Aug 01 '26
If Gunn made a batman movie in his style with his shitty music scenes and inappropriate jokes then I'm so done with the dcu.
5
u/Wonderful_Expert_315 Jul 31 '26
He had a hit with Guardians and now he thinks every project needs to be a lesser known hero/villain or just straight up ones you've never heard of. People dont go to NFL games to watch the punter.
2
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
Literally nobody has heard of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, or Wonder Woman.
4
u/sicsemper1 Jul 31 '26
Exactly what I was saying the other day , everyone thinks because he did great with the guardians hes gonna turn the dcu around. He’s gonna ruin the dcu
1
u/thequehagan5 Jul 31 '26
Going to..?
have you seen superman 2025? It is an appalling fillm.
1
u/Wonderful_Expert_315 Aug 01 '26
Dude listen, i was so pumped for this Superman movie like I was for The Batman. They i watched it on bootleg and it was just so meh. It seemed kind of weird. Superman is not likeable in my eyes and the story just tucked. The fight against the kaiju was stupid as was the fight against "Ultraman". But when I say these things I'm an outcast because everyone thinks Superman 2025 is better than The Dark Knight. That's like saying peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with stale bread are better than the moat perfect reueben sandwich in existence.
2
u/Wonderful_Expert_315 Jul 31 '26
It's not even that because I really don't like the guy but he can make a good movie. But he just has to put in his humor in it and that works for Marvel not DC. I know people have their prerogative but I love the dark DCU: Trigon, John Constantine, Darkseid, the Spectre, Nekron and other crap like that. That's what separates DC from Marvel in my opinion and I dont know why they shy away from it so much.
1
u/kyp-the-laughing-man Jul 31 '26
I'm worried for that too. I had to see the dceu go, I don't want another restart. At least I'm excited for man of tomorrow. The rest... we'll see I guess
7
u/kemuri-titan Jul 31 '26
Clayface is guaranteed a success considering how it's a lower budget horror movie and considering how movies like obsession did. I think it was a very good idea to go with these horror themed superhero movies
0
u/MattMurdock77 Jul 31 '26
It will. Gunn just won’t.
1
u/jjreddit1996 Jul 31 '26
They aren’t going to make a Waller show and a Jimmy Olson show if Gunn isn’t in charge.
7
u/Any-Relationship3435 Jul 31 '26
If Batman, Superman, Wonder Women and Green Lantern are not enough DC is dead no matter whose in charge
2
u/Wonderful_Expert_315 Jul 31 '26
Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg, Green Arrow, and the rogues gallery. I mean include the main 4 and you have over a dozen projects that should be in development. No a Waller or Jimmy Olsen show.
1
u/Inevitable_Board_712 Aug 02 '26
Green Arrow is barely a household name and that’s thanks to the CW show and subsequent Arrowverse. And he was nicer Batman with nicer enemies.
The vast majority of a casual audience does not care about Martian Manhunter or Cyborg. Casuals don’t even care all that much for Aquaman.
The Flash is the only big hitter missing from that lineup - but would you not rather they actually treat the character(s) with care as well as the story? Or do you just want them to pump out red streaks for your viewing?
4
u/chnby Jul 31 '26
its good that the dcu dont rush everything in my opinion and we get some smaller projects between the big bangers lets just have fun with the dcu and why isnt it cool that we get characters that arent so popular
7
u/Key_Plankton3772 Jul 31 '26
You can cross brave and the bold off the list because that shit isn't ever coming out

Gunn’s DCU aka DaCringy Universe is a massive flop, every project is fill with silly, cringy plot and dialogue, extensive hard to stomach humour, no one takes the DC movies seriously anymore except those internet shills, eventually the box office will reflect everything.
1
u/covenant_x Jul 31 '26
what's ur fix?
3
u/Adamski895 Aug 04 '26
cancel everything in production right now and go back to the drawing board.
Superman and Supergirl are already out nothing you can do with that but pivot their characters to a more serious toned universe.
The DCU and the MCU is almost the same now in tone and personality.

u/TheRealone4444 Your love makes me strong, your hate makes me unstoppable Jul 31 '26
James Gunn you are pathetic. These ideas of course come from you because only a clown like you can come up with something as ridiculous as this. It is a massive shame that despite all your resources, you failed to use them properly. They are in the wrong hands. Some things are for not everyone and clearly you were not born to be the leader for the future of DC.
3
u/Different_Advice_552 Jul 31 '26
clayface looks like it will be decent and lanterns hopefully turns out okay

2
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
It is wild how these people see a slate mostly consisting of DC's biggest characters and somehow manage to spin this narrative.
5
u/Commercial_Age_9316 We live in a society where honor is a distant memory Jul 31 '26
The Jimmy Olsen Cinematic Universe
4
u/InvestigatorOk7988 Jul 31 '26
Clayface doesn't look like it'll be my cup of tea, but i kinda admire them going a different direction with it basically being a horror movie. I liked Superman (didn't love, but liked), so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt on Man of Tomorrow. Lanterns looks like it could be good. I'd love to see a well done Swamp Thing. Bane and Deathstroke could be good if done right. Waller, Jimmy Olsen, Booster Gold? Seriously? Why?
5
u/trakrad99 Jul 31 '26
This slate seems more like what James Gunn wants to see, and not what the DC fans want to see.
It’s like Dave Portnoy running around reviewing pizza when he only likes one specific style of pizza.
What I’ve realized is that James Gunn excels at taking obscure and edgy characters and making them shine.
Taking beloved characters like Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl should’ve been easy.

You don't unite a massive fan base if your movies don't resonate, compadre.
5
u/wadekellogg Jul 31 '26
Marvel peaked when it was making movies that appealed to everyone, regardless if you read comics or not. If you haven't read comics, you wouldn't know what more than half of this shit is.
5
u/Substantial_Plan_632 Jul 31 '26
That's a great point, and it's not mentioned enough. Making expensive movies and shows that cater to only a specific subset of DC comic book nerds was never going to be a winning strategy, yet Gunn and the idiot execs at WB did it anyway.
HBO greenlighting a Jimmy Olson & Gorilla Grodd show instead of more mainstream and Emmy-winning content in the Reevesverse like The Penguin is just insane to me
1
u/Awesome_guy11 Jul 31 '26
Yeah, but to be fair most people didn't know who guardians of the Galaxy were before the movies came out and they were some of the most successful marvel movies
2
u/wadekellogg Jul 31 '26
Thats a fair point but that was phase 2 at the earliest. We already trusted the universe and direction that was established in phase 1.
2
u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Jul 31 '26
The MCU built its universe on the BIGGEST characters Marvel owned outside Spider-Man and X-Men. And they eventually brought Spider-Man in before they reached their box office peak with Infinity War and Endgame. They didn't do the obscure characters until the MCU was a hugely successful franchise that had grossed over a billion on multiple movies and had a massive amount of fans who would see ANYTHING they put out.
1
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
The biggest Marvel characters who weren't Spider-Man or X-Men were NOT big characters prior to the MCU...with Hulk probably being the exception (and his solo film didn't do all that well).
1
u/Any-Relationship3435 Jul 31 '26
Are Batman, Superman, WW, Green lantern not DC’s BIGgEST characters?!
2
u/Caleb-CM Jul 31 '26
True... although, I saw a little of the trailers for Clayface and Lanterns, and they have a very different vibe "each" compared to superman and supergirl...
If they can make each movie very different in tone and style, I can see them build it up to make something good... I also think they shouldnt follow Marvel and try to push towards a crossover film as their main goal.
I just wish they could just have Snyder continues his JL, even tho theres this new dceu... there's literally no issues it would be just like the animations and comics(so many different stories).
0
u/FalconLeading Jul 31 '26
I'm not a snyder fan but I wouldn't mind them handing him a Dark Knight Returns or Red Son elseworlds movie to throw you guys a bone.
I think that'd be up his alley and then everyone can be happy (?)
5
u/Muted-Ant-5941 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Bone is what Gunn is throwing at you guys with Olsen and Grodd rather than...nvm
1
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
Rather than what? Rather than Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern? Oh, wait...
3
u/cassket858 Jul 31 '26
Swamp Thing I can see being a hit. Bane & Deathstroke? Weird, but sure. But who the fuck wants an Amanda Waller solo? Make it Team 7.
2
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
Waller will probably be a continuation of Peacemaker...which was very well regarded by critics and audiences. I'm here for it.
1
u/cassket858 Aug 01 '26
Peacemaker S1 was DCEU. Peacemaker S2 closed that, correct me if I'm wrong. Peacemaker is either no longer canon to mainline DCU, or being rewritten. I honestly hope it's the latter. Peacemaker in the comics was completely different and really interesting, and I wish it was possible to see John Cena do a more faithful iteration. I also NEED a faithful iteration of Vigilante. Freddie Stroma was great, but that simply wasn't Vigilante to me.
As for Waller, I suggested Team 7 because that's somewhat of an origin story for how she became what everyone knows her as, and would be great for introducing some important and/or badass characters, including Deathstroke, Steve Trevor, Grifter and Black Canary. I recommend the Team 7 run, I think it was great.
2
u/Prestigious_Plum9276 Aug 01 '26
S1 was explicitly retconned as being in the DCU. It was pretty much the first thing they do in S2...they make a big joke about it so as to leave zero ambiguity.
1
u/cassket858 Aug 01 '26
I don't have the greatest memory, apologies. The main thing I remember from Peacemaker is the ending of S1, which very clearly featured the DCEU Justice League. I'm not saying I didn't like it, I'm just saying the timeline should not add up.
1
u/Sure-Palpitation2096 Aug 02 '26
The very beginning of S2 had changed S1 scenes, they changed the justice league to the justice gang.
4
u/FalconLeading Jul 31 '26
Swamp Thing if they actually have the courage to make a balls to the wall philosophical, psychedelic, scary, haunting, moving horror/sci-fi/drama written by someone like Charlie Kauffman. If it's anything less they shouldn't bother.

6 of them are never going to see the light of day.
In fact booster gold was just announced as cancelled by the show runner.
1
u/pear_com Jul 31 '26
the show isnt canceled, they are just not going to use his script, I think this is a case of overexitement on the part of the writer thinking that this was a guaranteed thing for them, every new information we had of booster gold came from them, annoucing how the pilot was finished and up for review and stuff before actually being approved as THE script for the series.

Firstly, we need only movies till the DCU has taken root in the zeitgeist. Secondly, we need movies of only those characters that are gonna found the DCU’s justice league. Thirdly, by making lanterns as a series, you’re inevitably nerfing the character’s importance. Ideally, give us a closure to the Snyderverse by allowing him to complete his JL2-3 atleast as animated projects. Right now it’s just all over the place

What do you mean?

They need to make enjoyable projects. They don't need to speed run the failures of the DCEU.

We get enjoyable projects all the time from many studios & IPs. And even for us to continue having “just enjoyable projects” from DC, WB needs to see a 2B JL movie in the horizon. Otherwise even these enjoyable projects will be shelved.
Speed run which failures of the DCEU?

Which failures? Holy shit, dude. You know what, nevermind, the orderly probably needs to give you your meds about right now.

There were failures in the DCEU - but which failures are you referring to is what I asked. Hey I’m sorry if I assumed you’d be having the basic intellect to explain your stance.

Literally doing exactly the thing you are advocating: accelerating into a shared universe crossover event extravaganza to match The Avengers without bothering to actually make good movies that make people care about these versions of the characters.
Batman isn't up to Gunn. Reeves was on-board nearly 4 years before Gunn took over. Superman 2 is coming. Wonder Woman is coming. Lanterns drops in 2 weeks. And canceling Jimmy Olsen or whatever isn't going to do anything to speed up Wonder Woman nor will it make Matt Reeves or Robert Pattinson want to be part of the DCU.

When did i advocate for accelerating the pace to get into a crossover film. Heck, I've been one of the controversial members of this sub as i consider BvS a colossal mistake for stuffing it with two heroes too many. I hate Superman 2025 exactly for this reason. All i said was no series, only movies and only movies for those characters that would eventually found the justice league. So in this DCU it would be Superman 2025, Lanterns, a Mr. Terrific film (a viable replacement for Batman, a tech billionaire genius, coz Batman is occupied with Reeves), a WW film, a Hawkgirl film, a horror film for Martian Manhunter (instead of Swamp Thing or Clayface), and a Flash film. Then bring in the Justice League film. So you go slow with 7 different heroes, each with their unique genre and then bring in JL. This would give a comfortable 3-4 years for the audience to stew in the new DCU to get invested in its characters, to eventually care enough to turn up to the theatres to see JL. Then bring in sequels for your heroes, and introduce other quirky ones like Booster Gold, and introduce streaming shows for heroes that are similar in origin/nature/powers to the JL founders (eg. Supergirl) and for villains (eg. Clayface). The whole mistake of WB then and now was wanting their Avengers today. I even call Ayer's Suicide Squad a mistake that shouldn't have been released before the DCEU's JL 1.
