When we were kids, my sister and I took Mom's license out of her wallet, cut her photo out and very skillfully replaced it with a picture of cookie monster.
I'm 52 now and she still hasn't forgiven us!!

How old were you two? That drastically changes how I would feel about this

Roughly 10 and 12? Around there anyway. I was the younger digit.
Before you judge too harshly, keep in mind this was over 40 years ago!

I’d be annoyed, but that’s not too bad. If either of you were 15+, I’d be pissed

As the legend goes, she only found out about it when she got pulled over for speeding. I guess the officer started laughing when she explained what must have happened.
This is like, deep lore in our family history.

Absolutely hilarious prank, 10/10!!!

Someday, I'm going to borrow this prank, but only to put Garfield over their face with easily removed Scotch Tape.
If it's discovered just in time to get them out of a speeding ticket, all the better.

What inspired you to do this? It feels like a very specific set of operations that add difficulty vs just putting a sticker on it. Did you see some forger do it in a movie or something?
3
u/mighty_boognish_77 1d ago
I think we just found a picture of Cookie Monster that was the perfect size and would work well. But it was a long time ago so it's a little fuzzy. And I blame my sister. I was an innocent victim of her nincompoopery.

A guy that went to school with me did almost the opposite. 6'4" in junior high, he had used a fake ID for years. Upon turning 21, he visited a bar where he had been served at 16, and flashed his real ID, so they knew that he was underage when he started drinking there.
383
u/METRlOS 2d ago
The 6'8 kid in my grade was the bouncer at a local bar; he just assumed that everyone in his grade was the same age as him. One day I went and said "You get a free drink on your 18th birthday here right?" while handing him my ID for the first time ever. I got a "Are you fucking kidding me?" because I had been going there for almost 3 years at that point, I skipped grades and he was held back.
206
u/Upstairs-Hedgehog575 2d ago
I can see why he was held back if he thought that didn’t make him older than his classmates.

u/bobonirds 2d ago

u/Steelhorse91 2d ago
Most don’t care lol. Some know the whole time and don’t care provided the picture on the ID is close enough and they don’t cause any problems that cause the police or licensing to turn up. Money is money.

I work at a liquor store where we have a 100% ID policy. I have definitely seen people use fake IDs, but the thing is, I've never been confident enough that any one specific person's is fake to deny a sale.
The fakes are good enough and there legit are people out there who just look that young that there's never been anything concrete enough to deny service off of.
Same thing with selling to intoxicated people (though there have been a few of those that I've denied). There are a lot of smelly, grimy, dirty people who haven't been drinking and are there to buy. There are plenty of homeless people. There are lots of people who have speech impediments and slur their words without being drunk.
Meanwhile my state allows for concealed carry and I HAVE been threatened before. My hourly is nowhere near enough to start trouble where there isn't any. And if there theoretically is, I don't have enough evidence to be justified in starting it anyway.
But the things I know are wrong, like the pregnant jaundiced woman coming in with her three young kids and buying a fifth of bottom shelf vodka, or the person coming in with a bandage on their arm and paying with a plasma donation center card, I have no grounds to deny sale. The world is a fucked up place.
15
u/Ok-Limit-7173 2d ago
But... why are people threatening you? Your state sounds like a very safe place as everyone is carrying a gun /s
2
u/NemeanLyan 2d ago
Ikr, nothing makes me feel safe like when someone starts screaming at me because I'm not legally allowed to use their concealed carry permit as ID ☺️
8
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 2d ago
It doesn't matter anyway. They don't use fake IDs for stings. They send in real teenagers with real IDs who are too young.
Unless you drastically over serve someone which would get you in trouble anyway, you won't ever need to know it's a fake to avoid trouble. You just need to check it which is the real problem, nobody be checking sometimes. Last one I saw was slick as hell, she came in and even talked to the people sitting next to her while she was ordering her beer, then left and a second later the guy with the clipboard came in. You wouldn't have been able to tell her from any other twenty something there except she was at most 20. At that place only the bouncer checked and he wasn't working then so they got overconfident on not checking anybody at the bar
3
u/much_longer_username 2d ago
> They send in real teenagers with real IDs who are too young.
Are you saying the ID represents them as their actual age, or that they have been furnished with an ID that is inaccurate but otherwise looks and feels identical to all the other government-issued IDs?
Because the latter case sounds like some bullshit. Not to say you're making it up, just that it's ridiculous and unfair, so I'm hoping I've got it twisted but suspect I don't.
8
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 2d ago
They're kids who are recruited, it's their actual ID. Like their honest to God government issue ID. It's not a fake name or a fake age. It's their driver's license or otherwise state issue ID. So for obvious reasons if the establishment never bothered to check that's a demerit. But they don't try to trick you, there's no fake, they're literally just checking if you aren't checking people's real IDs. They don't care about fakes, not in the States anyway, every state has a different one it's very hard to know the rules for just serving beer
1
u/Steelhorse91 1d ago
Yeah those sting ops don’t really stop locals drinking underage on fake ID’s because people know who’s local.
1
u/NemeanLyan 2d ago
Hello fellow Utahn? I think there are only a few states that do the CUB program, I remember Utah actually stole it from California, ironically enough

u/InsuranceInner3040 2d ago
I used mine a lot at a dive bar in the town where I went to school. Owner came up one night and told me to finish my beer quickly and leave. Said ABC was in town and making rounds. He knew everytime I went in there it was fake but didn’t give a shit because I paid my tab and didn’t cause any trouble. He just didn’t want the fine since enforcement was in town that night. I went back the next weekend and not a word was said. So yeah, most don’t care if you’re cool about it.
2
u/Ladymomos 15h ago
My teenage friend group went to a bar in town for years that mostly otherwise just frequented by a lot of Japanese students from the international college. No one there ever caused any problems, so the cops had bigger fish to fry, and never went in there. The owner never asked for our ID, but we saw him in a liquor store one day and he just casually said "they won't sell to you here girls"
5
1
u/GrowlingPict 2d ago
Yeah, and if theyre in here it stops them from getting into trouble out there. It's all for the greater good
14
u/Own-Leave-2039 2d ago
This happened a lot at the small town I went to college at. One bar was pretty lax, but someone always thought it would be funny to celebrate there for their 21st after they had been a regular for years. Bar staff were not amused and it usually resulted in a ban and ruining it for everyone else that had been flying under the radar
13
u/kyleyeezus 2d ago
Sounds like a shit bar with a bunch of insecure workers. Banning someone on their 21st because youd been serving them illegally prior to that is a wild business practice. Like… guys… youre banning someone who likes to drink, doesnt cause problems, and can bring friends now.
If that happened to me, Id be petty enough to call the local alcohol enforcement and show them receipts from when I was served underage.
5
u/TheLordB 2d ago
Or they are in a state that takes things like that seriously and will fine and/or shut down the bar if they find out.
Some states have massive fines for the individual servers ($500+) and possibly criminal charges as well if they are caught not enforcing the underage laws correctly.
So what is the limit for them not being a ‘shit’ bar? $5000 in fines an a misdemeanor charge? Or does it have to be a felony for you to consider it valid for the bar to properly enforce the law without being a ‘shit’ bar?
6
u/-nutz 2d ago
I think the problem comes from the lack of respect and liability. If they got caught drinking underage, the bar could get in serious trouble.
Not really surprising that somebody might not like to hear that you were taking advantage of them for years.
3
u/kyleyeezus 2d ago
More like “not surprising that somebody who has been working at a bar for years might not like to find out they suck at their job.” Take advantage? Lmao. Like, the people at the bar had ONE JOB. Check IDs.
The ego you have to have to ban someone after they turn 21 because you or your employees failed to do your job…
Clearly, the person had been respectful as a patron because they got away with using a fake ID for years. The liability is nonexistent now because the patron is 21.
The bar had two choices: laugh it off and pretend it never happened, or ban him because it happened despite the fact hes a regular that doesnt cause problems.
Banning the 21yo is petty as fuck.
4
u/TheDrummerMB 2d ago
As a former bartender and restaurant manager, no one is going to be embarrassed someone got past them with a fake.
3
u/Own-Leave-2039 2d ago
fwiw there were no fake ids involved, and this was 30 years ago. This was a college town in the middle of nowhere, it was mostly about people breaking an unwritten rule of “if everyone just be’s cool, no one is going to hassle anyone”. It only became an issue if people couldn’t handle their shit and drew attention to what the bar was doing.
Or, if someone made it obvious by drawing attention on your 21st when everyone knew you had been going there forever.
2
u/JoseDonkeyShow 2d ago
Man, fuck them kids. I work at a dive bar specifically to be petty as fuck. It’s a blast tbh

u/zillyiscool 2d ago
Lol this actually happened to me. Found out years later that the ban was bullshit. Well played bouncer man
1
u/JackBrown82q 2d ago
At that point why would the bar care? The damage has been done. If they ban them for this that person might go around yapping how the bar serves underage people.

u/AccordingMedicine129 2d ago
Are you simple? How is this hard for you to understand lmao. Redditors not beating the allegations
3
u/Curmudgeony-Cat 2d ago
that kinda character would hand their real ID for the bit even if they weren't getting carded
2
u/Active_Complaint_480 2d ago
Because at any time, they could be under an inspection, where someone will use a fake ID or try to get in without being carded and they'll be fined and in some cases lose their license.
That actually happened at one place in a neighborhood I lived in. The place was a restaurant/bar. They lost their license for repeated violations. The place went under shortly there after, because the alcohol was 99% of the reason people went there.
1
u/IdeaAgreeable307 2d ago
Many US states have laws that REQUIRE an ID check for anyone who appears to be under a specified age. Utah straight up requires an ID check for purchase of alcohol at bars and taverns among other places. Period.
3
u/rgreen192 2d ago
A friend of mine had his 21st birthday party at a bar he had been going to the entire time he was in college. When the bartender realized it he was like “wait we’ve been serving you for years” and got a good laugh out of it. He was using someone else’s actual ID and the bartender didn’t even know his real name until that night
2
u/ubongabasiakpan 2d ago
I can imagine what the bartenders face will look like after realizing the truth 😂😂😂
2
u/gargoyle30 2d ago
Something similar happened to my gf, then her parents wanted to take her to a bar for the first time when she turned 18 and the bouncer recognized her and then wouldn't let her in
2
u/kanemano 2d ago
the bar I regularly went to in college actually carded me 4 days after my 21st even though I had been going there for about 4 years.
2
u/dramboxf 2d ago
Did the exact same thing. Started drinking there at 16 (6'2", about 230lbs in HS). Never carded. Showed them my DL on my birthday. Bartender was irked for about 30 seconds but got over it.
2
u/HappierHungry 2d ago
a guy i used to work with did something similar, but it was just because he could grow a full beard pretty much as soon as puberty hit.
he went to the same bar every weekend, so when the regular security guards greeted him and asked what he and his group of friends were celebrating, they nearly shit themselves when he said his 18th birthday (this was in Australia). still let him in though lol
2
u/EndHawkeyeErasure 1d ago
I did sort of the same, my job used to involve driving drunks home. We would often wait in a bar for the owner to be done with her night so we could drive her home. The day after I turned 21 I went in for a drink and showed the sweet older bartender lady my ID with the stupidest grin on my face. She took it with a smile as if she didnt need it, did a double-take, eyes nearly bugged out of her head. Then she gave me that look moms give their kids when they've gotten away with something they shouldn't have.
1
u/S0meone_on_reddit 2d ago
Same thing here, the bouncer of the club which I knew quite well by that time was like you lying all that time to me? Get in there and shut up.
1
u/TheLastHotstepper 1h ago
I know 2 people who did similar. Their families through them 18th birthday parties in their local boozer, cake, buntin, the lot. Both got barred at the end of their functions.
0
u/AcanthaceaeCrazy1894 2d ago
The bouncer remembered the persons age?
I’ve worked several pubs/clubs and have never memorised anyone’s birth date or year
6
u/Upstairs-Hedgehog575 2d ago
No they didn’t remember his age, but if he’s just turned 21, how could you have been serving him for years…
1
u/AcanthaceaeCrazy1894 2d ago
Also why did they ID him again if he had already been ID’ed before ?
If time had passed thay they didn’t remember him then they wouldn’t ask him for ID again.
I smell shit and it’s this made up story
5
u/McFake_Name 2d ago
Some places will ID people with no exception on times they have seen someone unless the person is very clearly old. I've been IDed consistently by people I grew up with and we are well above 21. This exact scenario from the top comment happened to a friend, but the bouncer definitely recognized him for a few years. Laughed at it. Still IDed him every time after that.
2
u/Spuddaccino1337 21h ago
I've worked at places like this. Everyone gets carded, period, no exceptions. Tell grandma to fish her ID out of her purse if she wants a beer.
1
u/Upstairs-Hedgehog575 1d ago
I think the story implied he presented his ID unprompted to show them the error of their ways.
It could be made up, it’s been known to happen on the internet, but imo it’s an entirely plausible story.

"[Fancy yet generic present tense verb] the [blank] is peak [fancy yet generic word choice]" is like, the poster child for AI speak, but a lot of comments that are just repeating or summarizing what happened or was already said in an overly polished declarative that doesn't actually add anything are also sus. The [adjective]_[noun] or default username format is another red flag (even moreso when they don't have a pfp). Then when you click on their profile the post and comment histories are hidden and it's a month old with a very small amount of karma (or suspiciously high)

based on the upvotes its what reddit craves.
but what the point is, at best influence people via advertising, if a "natural" looking account says hey check out this thing, it works as marketing. At worst the same thing but with political sway.
And if you dont have anything to manipulate yourself, just sell the account for money. Its like grinding gold in MMOs.
people upvote far too liberally. the comment added literally nothing.

One of my coworker was a reservist and made a fake military driver's licence. This was way back in the day when they were essentially paper slips that many units could print and issue internally after some officer signed it.
The way they got it through was his buddy clerks in the orderly room faked some of his other documents to change his birth year. So the Major from the motor pool glanced at his file, said "good enough" and stamped/signed his licence.
This created a problem, as some clerks use existing paperwork to make new paperwork. It might go to the national capital, or other places out of their reach. By the end of his 30 year career, he was still finding documents with the fraudulent birth-year on them.
12
u/FSCK_Fascists 2d ago
I was promoted just before my 20th birthday. When getting my new ID, the clerk asked birthdate- I told him a year earlier, so I was about to turn 21 on my new military ID.
That was 35 years ago. I still run in to that birth year on veteran paperwork sometimes.

u/_Punko_ 2d ago
My buddies and I had made our own fake ID and had used it for a couple of years. My buddy Ed was at the beer store with his older sister when they picked up beer for the weekend.
They took it to the cash and the lady asked Ed for ID for the purchase. Ed whipped out his ID and then paid for the beer. When they got into the car, his sister screamed at him to see his ID.
When we came over that weekend, she demanded to see all our fake IDs. She laughed and laughed.
I'm sure the doorman in our town were surprised that the three of us were all born in the Yukon Territory (only Ed was) but they didn't really care. The only thing we knew ahead of time, was only use the fake ID for the doormen or cashiers. If a cop asks, give them your actual ID and take the fine.

9
u/GrumpyMcGrumpyPants 2d ago
A standard bifold, for example, will have horizontal pockets for holding cards and about the top 1/4 to 1/3 is visible, so an ID cut in half horizontally would still have enough card stump to be held in place in the pocket while looking "normal" at the top.
E.g., this product photo has an ID in the left bottom pocket: https://bullsheathleather.com/products/big-bend-bifold-wallet
1

u/the_second_best123 2d ago
Not if the slits in the wallet are snug (which is how they should be, we don't want cards slipping out).

u/Texugee 2d ago
Oh she’s saying that it was in something like that and they didn’t notice until they opened it and witnessed.

2
u/daytradingishard 2d ago
I still don’t understand. How do you hand the ID to the bouncer and not realize it’s cut in half when taking it out?
3
u/thatsknotwrite 2d ago
The point is, they don’t figure it out until they’re already dressed up and at the club, in front of the bouncer, with no time to fix it.
1
u/T0kenAussie 2d ago
Not all wallets have a window and id assume you’d be hiding it in an obscured part. If mum cut the id horizontal and wedged it just right the OP would be none the wiser till they pull the card out in view of the bouncer

I found an ID of a guy looked kind of like me when I was 16. The ID made me over 18 so I could buy dip or chewing tobacco (rural Texas) and I memorized all of the info on it. My mom found it in my wallet and I had to call the guy after looking up his family in the phone book and meet him at Circuit City where he worked to return it.

I once snagged a few cases of beer for a party. I tossed them in the trunk of my car amidst my soccer shit thinking my parents would never be the wiser. Tell everyone I’ve got beer. Show up to the party, and prepare to bring in beer. My dad had switched it wi the orange soda and said Fuck all to me . Just a cheerful “have fun tn!”
We still haven’t talked about it (im 35) and my opinion is he owes me a couple cases of beer.

Where I am from you trying to use an fake ID would be instant police case so a mom doing this would be extremely asshole and dangerous move.
If you tried to get in bar with fake ID, bouncer would have to take you in backroom untill police arrives to take you away.

I never smoked, went to a camp where EVERYONE smoked and came back with some cigarettes in my bag. Choked it into the drawer, forgot about it. My mum never went through our stuff. She however had a bitch day, she also rarely smokes, but on 0,01 chance she looked into my drawer and was so happy to find the cigarettes to help with the stress on that day. She knew I don’t smoke, somehow she just treated it as a gift from heavens on that day.

u/manchu_wok 2d ago
This doesn’t even make sense. If you tried to put just the top half in the wallet, it would slide all the way down into the pocket to where you can’t even see it. Because it’s no longer tall enough to stand up beyond the height of the pocket. So the kid would not see the ID at all. 100% fake story.
