So datacenters are actually worse than both a canal boom/bust and the fiber laid down for the dot com bust. Canals still have a use. Or you fill them in and completely recover the land. Fiber wasn't used for 20 years but now we have fiber everywhere because these hubs were laid down and used again.

Data centers are a waste all the way around. Sure you could spend a ton of money to knock them back and and try to reclaim that land. But the technology inside them will be completely useless. Fiber doesn't degrade. Servers and computer chips are basically obsolete within 4-ish years.

The obsolescence cycle is slowing so we could give them 8 years to be generous

4 years? If you combine all the US coder jobs for 4 years you have about 1.2 trillion dollars. That's not enough to pay for AI

....what?

I'm talking about hardware chips being obsolete in 4 years, nothing to do with people. I'm saying if the AI bubble bursts, and we avoid it for even half the period of time we avoided the fiber we installed and didn't use for the dot com boom, it will be a way bigger waste because, unlike fiber, computer hardware becomes obsolete.

If it could bring 30x it's investment in value it wouldn't be a bubble. As it looks it cant even do 0.5x
