Actually ppl who don’t like cats are weird. All cat ppl are dog ppl too, but some dog ppl only like dogs and hate cats. That’s weird.

Cat people have emotional baggage and like the abuse. They also get SUPER offended when you say you don't like cats like you just called their newborn ugly to their face.
Dog people are not like this.
How many cats do you own?

I don’t understand this seafood boil trend. Does it have to be in a plastic bag ? Or can I use a pot ? I don’t want hot food inside a plastic ziplock
42
u/Mr-FurleyX1 5h ago
Doing it in a large stock pot (or Dutch oven) is actually the traditional and preferred method for a low country or Cajun boil.
The plastic bag bit is silly and I don’t even know why this shit got popular. I’ve seen it at a few restaurants and my guess is bags are cheaper and easier when it comes to stocking and cleaning
Boil everything in seasoned water and add your potatoes, corn, sausage and seafood.
Just don’t overcook the seafood or under cook the potatoes!
9
u/Girafferage 2h ago
It got popular because people are disgusting and lazy. They would rather make waste that floats around in the ocean and eat tiny bits of boiled plastic then just clean the damn pot afterwards.
2
1
4
u/Pristine-Setting-836 4h ago
The plastic bag is just for convenience portion sizing and supposed to be wayy at the end after the whole cooking process😂 not whatever the fuck is going on here.
2
-2
u/SilentJoe1986 1h ago
The bag is for restaurants. They can quickly put it all together early in the day and then they just have to drop it into boiling water when an order is made. Its called Sous Vide cooking and can be done with a plastic bag or glass jars. Doing it at home is redundant.
0
u/TheWalkingDead91 45m ago
I buy oven bags when we do it at home.…the reynolds ones that is safe to bake a whole turkey in them or whatever….
We do it that way not to make cooking easier, but because it’s just easier to portion out everyone’s food equally that way, and keep leftovers separate. We don’t even cook the boil in the bag, or even rewarm it in the bag, but just put the cooked hot food in there, throw the sauce on, seal it up, shake it and hand it out. Everyone (all adults) gets an equal amount of food that they usually chipped in for.
Now if we were a family consisting of a bunch of kids who didn’t pay for shit….then yea then I can understand just throwing everything in a single huge roasting pan, setting it on the table and calling it a day.

u/Frosty_Tax6054 5h ago
Kind of works better if they use the right F'ing bag
1
u/Jim_e_Clash 3h ago
I don't get how this happened. The boil should literally be around 100c. Those Ziploc bags can handle more than that. But it looks like it just melted.
Maybe this is just a rage bait video, why were they recording.
6
u/LenaTick 2h ago
Or, they put the bag onto the hot stove...
1
u/Jim_e_Clash 1h ago
Yeah that did happen when she moved the spilling bag to the other side, You can see the bag instantly get melted and stuck to the stove when that happened. When she lifted the bag after setting it on the hot side it was like melted plastic stuck to the stove at around 17.5 seconds.
On his side it didn't get stuck, so that side of the stove wasn't hot (at least not past boiling). The only thing I can think is that the bag got soft from the high heat and a crab leg ripped through it.

u/reddit_names 5h ago
Restaurants do it in a bag so that they can run the same boil water with many different seasoning flavor combinations.
If you are cooking at home and doing one seasoning... Just use a pot.
6
u/Watergirl626 5h ago
At restaurants they bring it out in a bag, but it is like the consistency of a crock pot liner bag.
2
u/InevitabilityEngine 3h ago
There are special bags designed for this like the ones they use to cook steak in for sous vide.
The one they used is obviously not intended for that purpose.
2
u/Urusae_Kragface 58m ago
NO YOY DO NOT BOIL IT IN A ZIP LOCK BAG. Cajun seafood boils are meant to be BOILED IN A POT. The water should be seasoned and pre-boiled with aromatics then have seafood/veg/potatoes/whatever added to it and then removed. You should put it on a plate or put some paper on the table and eat it. Plastic bags give you microplastics and staying in the bag that long has a possibility of overcooking your food. It also tends to be greasy and makes an already messy food messier
1
u/Exact-Ad-4132 21m ago
Okay what is up with the paper on the table part? I've seen that attempted many times and it always looks gross and like the worst possible way to eat something.
1
u/uwill1der 7m ago
easy cleanup. Paper absorbs the juices, and when youre done you just ball up the paper and toss

What she was trying to do is known as "sous vide" cooking.
Your supposed to cook them in a bag, seal it, then boil the bag in a pot of boiling water.
Usually it's done with a "special machine". Not putting boiling liquid into the bag!
At lease that's what I think she's doing
3
u/BoldFace7 4h ago
Im also pretty sure you need to use special bags made to withstand that temperature. It looked like she was using run of the mill ziplocks.
Also, the water for Sous Vide is usually kept at a specific, below boiling, temperature. That's why you have special machines, they automatically hold the water at temperature, so you dont have to try and manually do it over the stove.
3
u/7ofalltrades 4h ago
Sous vide does not contact the food with the water, that's the whole point. Once the boiling water goes in the bag, it's not sous vide at all.
I can think of no reason to not just make the food in the pot. Either way it's just a container holding everything, obviously a pot is better for that.
5
u/C_Hawk14 3h ago
Also, sous vide does not use boiling water. It's water kept at a specific temperature, below boiling temperature.
At least I wouldn't call it sous vide if you boil stuff in water.
3
u/Foreign-Kiwi-4136 1h ago
Crazy how people try to act like they know something when they are completely wrong.
1
u/CipherWeaver 4h ago
You don't even need a special machine, you just have to be careful with the temperature. All the "machine" does it stir the water and keep an eye on it with a thermometer, heating it to keep it at the target temperature. You can do it in a big pot on the stove too, but you have to be careful to not let the temp get too high or too low.
I've never seen boiling water get put IN the bag.
1
u/officeja 4h ago
I thought it was one of those roast bags, put it in the plastic bag, seal it, then put in oven for like an hour or so

I see that you’ve never done or even seen someone doing sous vide cooking. That’s not fair, you might have seen people doing it very wrong, and if that’s your only source of information about it, I can understand and why you are so off base with your answer.
Please do a little bit of learning on a topic before you give others completely wrong directions/information.
I’m sorry if that comes off wrong, I am not trying to be an asshole or a jerk, I’m just trying to give honest feedback.-1

This is dumb, who wants plastic in their food. Just use a stock pot fill 3/4 way add boil seasoning bring to a rolling boil, add the potatoes, bring down to simmer, go 10 min, add corn, wait 10 then crank the heat and drop the crabs for 5 min then add shrimp, wait 2 min then dump in the crawfish let boil for 3 min and then remove heat and let rest for 10-15 and everything should be cooked optimally. If you're not doing crabs put sausage in first and wait 5-7min before adding the seafood as shrimp and crawfish have short cooking times. It also helps to have a basket for the pot, then you can keep going with base and just keep adding if you need to make alot and don't have an outdoor boil setup.

Do people actually really film things like this?

If you’ve ever been to jail for an extended period of time, you’ve absolutely cooked “spreads” in a plastic bag
1

u/Imposslen 4h ago
They are suppose to use special boil bags that are heat proof. Much thicker plastic....with that being said I don't trust to cook the whole boil in the bag. Too much plastic. I used the boil bag just to put the seasoned butter in. And then put the boil in the bag and shake it to get butter seasoning all over the boil right before serving.

Soooooo, they do make bags for fish boils. IT IS NOT A ZIPLOCK BAG!
Is a specific bag for high temp, and yo don't put it right onto heat, you put it into a double boiler.

I love to make some shrimp boils at home. I use a plastic bag. However its not a ziploc bag, thats stupid. They literally make "boil bags" (I think its Reynolds Wrap brand?) that are designed to go into your oven.
As for why? Well, I don't want to do it on the stove top because then the whole house smells like sweaty seafood. I don't want to do it in the oven with a dutch oven because I don't want to ruin the seasoning on it with a lot of garlic, butter, and seafood oils.
The right bag actually works. This was not the right bag.
Also for anyone saying "how is that $70 worth of food!?" - seafood boil at actual boil restaurants isnt cheap. You get a few smol potatoes, a cob of corn, some mushrooms, shrimp, crab, oysters, andoulli sausage and all the wonderful sauce and thats enough for 1 maybe 2 people to eat, and its going to be like $50. I don't know, just how it is. I only eat shrimp though since I'm very seafood avoidant for the rest, and its cheaper.
